Rapid urbanization has led to the fragmentation of agricultural and natural landscape and increasing tensions related to natural resources depletion, environment degradation and safety of food system. Under this background, the sub-urban ring, as an interface between urban and rural area, has a highly mixed texture and functional mechanism. Production, storage, processing, distribution, selling, consuming, all parts of local food chains could happen here, which shapes this mixed agro-urban ecotone and gives this area an important role in the entire food network of metropolitan Milan. Therefore we decided to study how food chains work in this interface and how they interact with the landscape here, from storylines of different commodity groups, actors in the network, how food is produced, distributed, and consumed, then try to find a proper way to reshape an agrolandscape infrastructure which helps to enhance sustainability of the food system in Milan metropolitan area.

REGIONAL CONTEXT

The agricultural area of Metropolitan Milano is roughly divided into four types of agricultural production areas. Corn, beef and dairy products production areas in the west; rice and wheat production areas in the southwest; corn, beef and pork production areas in the southeast and corn and beef production areas in the east. Therefore, the plan will conduct a research on the supply of food sustainability based on the border between urban and rural areas, and participate in it using landscape techniques to improve the food and ecological sustainability of the entire belt. Based on road system, agricultural product type, natural background, industrial distribution and agricultural organization, we divided the ring belt into five major types.

HISTORICAL CHANGING PROGRESS

From the 15th century to contemporary society, as the primary industry, agriculture has played an important role in the entire city history of Milan. It provides a source of food for the people of Milan, as well as jobs, creates a connection between people, and forms a cultural network with local characteristics. At the same time, with the renewal of science and technology and production materials in different periods, especially after the second industrial revolution, the size of cities and land areas have expanded by leaps and bounds. However, the ensuing problems also include population growth, environmental pollution, the obvious separation of urban and rural areas, food safety and insufficient food supply, etc.

STRUCTURE OF THE RESEARCH

According to our goal, the research is separated into 4 main sectors: agricultural landscape units in Milan, storylines of Milan’s main commodity groups, existing food chain types in Milan, and sustainability impact areas. The analysis will be carried out both under each sector separately and compared between sectors, to find out how food chain system interacts with landscape system and then find a proper solution to enhance the sustainability of the whole network.

There are 6 main commodity groups in Milan:creals,meat(beaf and pork),milk,chicken&egg,veg etable and friuts.The production chains of those commodities distribute in different part of Milan and from different landscape types and urban spaces.Materials flow and circulation both inside single production unit and along the chains. 7

In terms of ecological strategy, the plan mainly categorizes the natural background on the ring belt.

To reduce the carbon emissions of food transportation, the plan designed a loop in the suburbs.

The plan changed the original intensive animal husbandry methods in the southwest to reduce the emergence of concentrated carbon emissions.

In terms of waste treatment, it mainly focuses on two aspects, one is the recovery and treatment of waste water, and the other is the recovery and treatment of solid waste.

In areas with high urban building density, the unused space in the city is transformed into urban farms, which enriches the functions of urban space.

The program added beer products to part of the farms and encourage the existing breweries to build partnership with livestock herds to reuse the residue from beer producing as fodder for animals.

LOW CARBON FOOD SYSTEM

The reposition we set for unit 1 is to build this area into a generator of urban gardening system in metropolitan city of Milan. This the first step is to seek for new possibilities to build new urban gardens, like the spared land, abandoned factories, roof top, etc. Also LED light cabinets can be part of the urban farming network. As soon as those pieces of farms are cultivated, a connection between them should be built, which consists of both the ecological corridors which can provide habitat for pollinators and the low impact transportation lines for them to share equipment and products. 13

LOW CARBON FOOD SYSTEM

For unit 2, since the pollution problem of Lambro river is severe, our first move is to treat the polluted water and repair the habitat along Lambro river. An efficient water purification network should be settled to purify the water both before and after it flow through the agriculture system, which makes sure both the safety of food and ecosystem. The build of green buffer along railway system is also necessary according to the density of railways here. On the production layer, we suggest the build of brewery-livestock partnerships to use the waste from beer producing as fodder for animals, which can help reduce the cost of breweries to treat their waste and increase resource utilization efficiency. 15

2019-2020 Australia Bushfire Season brought the most painful disaster to the continent in history. After the fire, properties and structures in the fire-prone areas were badly destroyed, also, several families lost their ones. Thus, there’s a voice being aroused to avoid living in the wildland-urban interface (WUI) areas. However, the strong and sophisticated aspiration in getting closer to nature and population pressure inevitably facilitate the development in the WUI areas. The project is located west to the Greater Sydney, between the City of Penrith and Richmond. It is a typical fire-prone zone in Sydney with two lively rivers passing through. Instead of traditional prevention-led approaches in WUI urban designs, this experimental project attempts to seek for a dynamic way of living with potential bushfires in the WUl areas. The new-emerged city will allow people to live freely in between emergency and normalcy. Through this state, the two rivers are going to unveil their hidden gifts in defeating fire risks.

Brissago Islands’ latitude and longitude is 46°08’ N and 08°44’ W. The Big Island (San Pancrazio) extends over an area of 25’568 m², whereas the Little Island (Sant’Apollinare) over 8’186 m². From the average lake water level of 193.50 m ASL, the bigger Island rises 6.50 meters and the little island 6.90 meters.

The Brissago Islands are located in the northern part of the Periadriatic Seam, in the Kinzigite Zone, named after the kinzigite gneiss that forms the bedrock of the area. Along the shore of the little island, it is possible to see some rocks that emerge. In all other places of the islands, the rock is covered by a thin layer of moraine. The Brissago Islands are the two peaks of a hill that was engraved by the erosion of the ancient ridgeline of the Ticino’s valley and the Maggia river.

The Brissago island is currently a beautiful botanical garden. The island has beautiful natural scenery and rich history, attracting people to the island every year. In the garden, around 1'700 plant species are cultivated. However, due to the inconvenience of transportation and the competition of similar botanical gardens around the island, the island has gradually become less advantageous to attract tourists to visit and become gradually forgotten. We hope to give this island a new identity and make it alive again.

In the thirteenth century nuns of the Humiliati order built a monastery on San Pancrazio, while the local parish also built around this time the Church of S. Pancrazio. After the suppression of the Humiliati in 1571 by Pope Pius V, the order's property was given to the hospital in Locarno and the islands became uninhabited.

In 1885 an Anglo-Irishman of the St. Leger family, Richard Fleming, and his Russian-born wife, Antoniette (nee Bayer, 1856 to 1948) purchased the Brissago Islands.After the First World War, due to poor investments she was deeply in debt and in 1927 she was forced to sell the property. [1] She moved first to Ascona and then to Intragna, where public assistance supported her until her death, on 24 January 1948. In 1928 Hamburg department store king Max Emden purchased the islands, demolished the existing house and replaced it with a neoclassical villa.[1] The villa had 30 rooms, a conservatory and a 33 metre long swimming pool. While not really into botany and gardening he retained the existing garden and vegetation, while at the same time undertaking all the necessary the maintenance. Emden lived on the islands until his death in a clinic in Locarno in 1940.

Lugano is a town and a municipality in southern Switzerland in the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino bordering Italy. It has a population (as of December 2018) of 63,185, and an urban agglomeration of over 145,000. The ninth largest Swiss town, it is the largest in Ticino and largest with an Italian speaking majority outside of Italy. The town lies on Lake Lugano, surrounded by the mountains of the Lugano Prealps.

The town centre is located on the lake shore just to the west of where the river Cassarate enters the lake. The town's waterfront forms a crescent around the bay between the Brè (925 m) and the San Salvatore (912 m ) mountains. This plan focuses on the oldest town in Lugano. With rich historical resources and beautiful natural environment resources, the city and nature have established a very charming relationship. However, due to the lack of reasonable urban planning in the formation of early cities, the architectural layout has caused many “non-spaces” in the city. The plan will use such spaces to enhance the quality of the environment in ancient cities.

Using this shape in the revitalizing and planning of the non-places means bringing its powers and its historical meaning into the modern space that will be created; through the arch, the passer-by a tourist, a citizen will be encouraged to read the elements inserted into the new space: the history and culture of the city center and the connection with the surrounding environment.

The historical and cultural component of the space is represented by the buildings surrounding the space; the connection with the surrounding environment - mainly in relation to water and flora, which are the two elements that most represent the identity of this city nestled between the mountains and the Lake - is transposed into landscaping with minimalist ethnobotanical gardens in the flowerbeds and fountains. This shape has not only guided the thought process that inspired the concept, but it has also had a great influence in the design of the physical elements that make up the new spaces: benches, pavements, fountains, flowerbeds.

Find out important places in the Lugano city center where there is potential for social and communal activities.

Connecting such spaces creates a physical connection by rearranging road paving and drainage systems.

These urban small spaces are rebuilt into pocket parks, open-air concert halls and other spaces to provide people with a good resting space.

This strategy is extended to every potential space in the city to bring vitality to the city.

The interpretative key of the “Through A Window” Project is the arch shape. This shape was selected because it holds a strong historical and cultural significance, so much so that it is ever-present in the architecture of Lugano’s old city center, where it always channels the attention of the passer-by towards the lake. 48

Focused on Landscape design,Industrial Museum,Airport Verification Center Landscape Design, BIM Construction Design SITE:Chengdu Group Project 2020 China Excellent Urban and Rural Planning and Design Third Prize Autumn 2020

This project is the landscape design of the new campus of the Second Institute of Civil Aviation. Relying on the strong design language of the building itself, the project strengthens the concept of the divine bird and extends it into the landscape space. This plan guides the street corner space to the main axis with paving, and emphasizes the atmosphere of such space with water features. In the construction drawing stage of this project, we tried to use the software based on VECTORWORKS to build the overall model of the park, and strive to achieve a more efficient management state in pavement design and plant design.

STUDY AREA

The project site is located in Chengdu Future Science and Technology City, close to Chengzi Expressway, west of the South Line of the Airport Expressway, and south of Park Avenue. "Two Rivers and Four Banks" has opened a new chapter in Chongqing's development of the river. A future new city of innovation, integration and sharing will emerge here as the times require. Jiangjin, the pioneer area for the development of Chongqing's urbanization, as an important connection point for the opposite development of the Chengdu-Chongqing region, is moving from a production-oriented city to a new stage of production and service and redevelopment. The Jiangzhou Bay area will be a testing ground for Jiangjin to explore new urban development concepts. Based on the current situation of Jiangjin's industry and new development demands, the project needs to supplement the service, from low-end manufacturing to the head center; to extend the chain, from selenium-rich planting to full-chain health care; to improve quality, from landscape pepper forest to cultural tourist hall, Build three industrial clusters, namely Zhihui Bay, Yiyang Bay and Yicai Bay. As an important area for Jiangjin's urban service function to expand to the south, Jiangzhou Bay will operate the city with the idea of "precise service", relying on environmental endowments to strive to become the "head center" of the manufacturing industry, and build a "Zhihui Bay" boosting project from the living center of the area Go to the regional R&D service center.
