PREMATURITY Neonatal Intensive Care unit (NICU) at Sali International Hospital Who Is A Premature Baby? Medically, any baby who is born before 37 weeks of pregnancy is a premature baby. Premature babies have different levels of prematurity levels, the risks being higher for an earlier birth. Why Do We Have Premature Children? The reasons could be many! In fact, it is not yet possible to ascertain why exactly someone had a premature baby. Did they suffer from any type of abnormalities in uterine structure? Example uterine fibriod or there might be some infections like malaria, imbalances in hormones, or emotional trauma during the gestation period, which led to premature labor. Certain chronic illnesses can also be a potent reason. Some other factors that enhance the chances of delivering premature babies include poor eating habits of the mother, or her unhealthy lifestyle. You have been ‘unhealthy’ if you have continued taking drugs, consuming alcohol or smoking during the gestation period. Insufficient antenatal care can also be responsible. Whatever the reason, mothers should not blame themselves as the subject is more complicated than you think and a number of factors can be the reason behind a premature delivery. What Health Issues do the premature Suffer and Are They Life Long? In Tanzania, one in four newborn deaths are due to premature birth complications, there might be some short term problems, if the baby is born before 37 weeks of gestation. Immature organs and a vulnerable immune system can make a baby susceptible to conditions such as sepsis, jaundice, hemorrhaging, anemia, hypoglycemia and respiratory disorders. In some babies, there might be long-term issues like learning disabilities and partial deafness. Many parents live the first few days after birthing a premature baby in the fear of losing the baby. However, keeping a positive attitude and providing the medical facilities to her/him should be your priority. The little soul
needs all the love and care you can provide. Understand that your premature baby has his/her own unique needs, and the more you give to him or her, the better. Is It Necessary to take premature baby To the Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU)? YES; At NICU, or the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the premature babies will get all the comfortable and useful things that are indispensable for easy revival. For example, at NICU, the premature babies can be isolated, with a special bed devised for them. The care providers will also use neonatal incubator, which will help maintain the right body temperature, humidity and levels of oxygen. Plus, there will be respiratory support, IV lines and NG/OG Tubes, which will help feed the baby and other monitoring equipment. The good news is Sali International Hospital (SIH) has opened a well Equipped Neonatal Care Unit (NICU) with modern equipment like Incubators, Warmer, Phototheraphy Machine, Ventilator, CPAP etc and appropriate staff to manage the premature babies and other newborns with complications. “Prevention is better than cure" If the obstetrician noted a high risk pregnancy with possible pre-term baby, he should recommend that patient to deliver in a facility that can look after the premature baby. Also cases of multiple pregnancy and mothers with gestational diabetes should be closely monitored as they have a higher risk of having premature babies. Use of dexamethasone is highly recommended in risk pregnancy to help in lung maturity. ‘’The Health of your premature Baby is important to us’’ Dr Ngecpe Agnes- Pediatrician.
