A Stranger at an Airport Is Only

A Friend You Have Yet To Meet As long as I can remember (at my age that’s a long time!), I have known of a place of friendship, of wonder, and of comfort that I knew was always there whenever I needed it. My favorite place to relax, and think, is the airport. As a kid, I rode my bike to Oakland Pontiac Airport in Southeastern Lower Michigan and made friendships that are still strong to this day, some fifty years later. That airport, and the friends I made there, clearly changed my life. Although I thought college was not an option due to the costs, I gave it a try because of the encouragement and support of those airport friends. Following completion of an engineering degree, I decided to join the United States Air Force, again with the support and encouragement of my airport friends. No matter where the Air Force sent me, I always had an airport nearby, available whenever I wanted or needed to visit. My last Air Force Assignment before retirement was Kirtland Air Force Base, and it was here that I met an entirely new set of airport friends—at the Kirtland Flight Center. Until this point, getting a pilot’s license hadn’t happened because family and work always took priority. But these new airport friends, and my family, provided the support and encouragement that helped me finally reach that goal I had all of my life. I am a pilot. My Son Greg became my first passenger, and we celebrated the event by flying to Grants, NM, for the traditional “$100 hamburger”. I have a handful of favorite memories, events that warm my heart and provide comfort when times are rough—this memory is one of them. The uncertainties and challenges we all are facing are overwhelming at times. Whenever I feel overwhelmed, I go to the airport. I find a shady spot and take in the sights and sounds that are uniquely found there. I think back on all of my “airport friends”, and my flight with Greg, and a calmness comes over me.
