December is an excellent time to see the Land of Enchantment from the air. The sun is lower during the day, creating long and intriguing shadows that make New Mexico’s beautiful landscape become almost magical! Kirtland Flight Center veteran pilot and retired Army Reservist, Hank Ogrodnik, knows this very well. He recently decided to make a return visit to one of his favorite New Mexico destinations, Angel Fire. A Kirtland Flight Center member since 2009, Hank hadn’t visited Angel Fire in about 10 years, so he planned a cross country trip to do just that. Angel Fire has its own airport, located at over 8,300 feet above sea level. Flying into the area provides unique views of Eagle Nest Lake and Mount Wheeler, the highest mountain in New Mexico. After a short visit at Angel Fire, Hank and fellow Flight Center pilot J.D. Smith took to the air once again, visiting Raton and Las Vegas, New Mexico before returning to Albuquerque. This 4½ hour, 350-mile trip was made even more remarkable by a beautiful land of enchantment day!
When asked about what he enjoys most about flying in New Mexico, Hank mentioned the uniqueness of the landscape—always incredible views. But he also talked about the Kirtland Flight Center and the quality of its training and operations. “They operate to a higher standard than local civilian flight training schools”, Hank observed. And he is right--not only must the Kirtland Flight Center meet Federal Aviation Administration regulations; it must also meet rigid Air Force regulations and inspections for flight training and aircraft maintenance. But perhaps the most important benefit of being a member of the Kirtland Flight Center that Hank mentioned is the comradery that goes with being with fellow club members who share the love of flying. As Hank pointed out, it provides additional opportunities to learn!
