Ocala mayor Ben Marciano will proclaim October 10 as “Gentle Carousel’s Magic Day,” highlighted by the Black and White Gala and Concert, featuring a trio of legendary Grammy Awardwinning Nashville songwriters with dozens of no. 1 hits—Billy Montana, Brent Mahar and Leslie Satcher. The celebration kicks off with the All-Breed Horse Capital Parade through downtown Ocala at 9am and passes Magic’s own plaque on the Walk of Champions. The big event takes place that evening at Circle Square Cultural Center. “These entertainers are amazing,” says Debbie GarciaBengochea, education director with Gentle Carousel Miniature Therapy Horses. “They’ll be singing and telling stories about their songs like songwriters do at The Bluebird Cafe in Nashville.” Gentle Carousel Miniature Therapy Horses started doing therapy visits in 1997, became an official 501(c)(3) non-profit charity in 2008 and was the first miniature horse therapy charity in the world. “Next year will be our 30th year under the name Gentle Carousel,” says Debbie. Of all Gentle Carousel’s horses, the most well-known is Magic, who was just 4 months old when they bought her. The charismatic mare with her shiny black coat and blue eyes has won numerous awards, including “Most Heroic Pet in America” by AARP, “One of History’s 10 Most Courageous Animals” by TIME Magazine, “One of Seven Most Notable Animal Heroes in the World” by The Daily Mirror and many

more. She’s also a Breyer Portrait Model Horse. Beloved for her work with children and veterans, Magic has been to Washington, D.C., to visit Congress, Arlington National Cemetery and the 9/11 memorial in New York City. She was featured on CNN’s "The Good Stuff" when she became a sworn police officer with the Ocala Police Department in 2022. Gentle Carousel never charges a dime for their life-changing work and is 100 percent supported by donations. The Black and White Gala and Concert is a crucial fundraiser and also helps Gentle Carousel’s Reading with Horses literacy programs, which will be in libraries and at each Marion County elementary school again this school year. Magic will appear at the concert wearing her tuxedo. “When she hears her theme

ou may not notice mobility slipping away all at once. It often shows up in little moments: reaching for something, getting up from the floor, turning to look behind you, bending to tie a shoe. Before long, “I can’t” starts replacing “I used to.” Tight muscles, old injuries, long hours sitting and everyday wear can all make movement feel harder than it should. And the longer stiffness becomes part of your routine, the easier it is to start avoiding the things you enjoy. At Get Stretch’d, assisted stretching and targeted bodywork help improve flexibility, ease tightness and support better movement. Our guided Stretch+ sessions are designed to help you keep doing more of what you love— with less stiffness getting in the way. Don’t let “I can’t” become your new normal.

or the last six decades, artists and art lovers have come together in downtown Ocala in late October for the Ocala Fine Arts Festival. Hosted by Fine Arts for Ocala (FAFO), the first event took place in 1966 and featured $3,000 in prize money. Through the years, the popular festival has become one of the Southeast’s “must-participate” art exhibits, attracting an average of 155 artists annually. The first children’s art show was incorporated into the main show in 1974. This year’s event takes place October 24 and 25, offering $26,000 in prize money in juried competition. More than 150 artists from around the country will display and sell their artwork. Student art, local performers and an array of food trucks make it a great day outing. in my hands for as long as I can remember,” says Jackie, who was born in Pennsylvania but has lived in Ocala since her family moved here in 1993 when she was a teen. The youngest of four siblings, Jackie truly fell in love with photography at age 16 when she took a photography class at Vanguard High School in 11th grade. “I think I was the only one who was not there for an easy credit,” she recalls. “I would spend my second hour of the day in my dark room, which was my favorite place.” Although she became a hairstylist, a career she’s had for 18

years, photography has always been what she’s done to relax and recharge. “Photography has always been like therapy,” says Jackie, whose grown sons are now 21 and 25. “Around 2017, I started posting on Instagram and friends said I should do something with my photos,” she notes. “I never really considered that until an Instagram page called The Forgotten South did a piece on me. Last summer I started selling prints.” Like many photographers who started with film, she evolved into digital but went back to her roots

about 15 years ago after inheriting one of her grandfather’s old cameras. Today she shoots 35mm and medium format film, often on inherited or thrifted cameras. Jackie mostly shoots landscapes and sees herself as a historian with a camera. “Vintage Florida postcard” and “back road Florida” are her favorite subjects. “If you go on a road trip with me, I stop a lot,” she laughs. “I love to shoot these tucked away places people don’t know exist anymore. I really like back roads, so I’m always out exploring, and I like the character and color of run-down,

rustic, old architecture. I’m really drawn to the 1950s.” Jackie is passionate about natural Florida and is considering dedicating one of the walls in her tent at the art festival to photos of places that no longer exist—whether that be springs or old buildings. “Someday I would love to take cross country road trips where I can just go shoot and capture all the fun little places to make a coffee table book or even a series of them,” says Jackie. Mark your calendar for the fourth weekend of October and come see Jackie’s photography and the work of over 150 artists. he love of reading is unifying. Great stories bring together people from all walks of life. Denisha Williamson-Walker discovered the joy of reading as a young child. Growing up in North Carolina, her uncle took her to the bookstore every week where she walked the aisle and “breathed in the quiet magic of stories waiting to be chosen.” “I’ve been reading since I was 3 and always wanted to open a bookstore,” says Denisha. “Now that I’m transitioning out of my primary career as a cosmetologist for 25 years, I want to do something I really enjoy the rest of my life.” That goal inspired her to start The Cozy Bookshop: Chapter 2, a mobile bookshop that pops up at local boutiques, markets and girls’ night out events. She loves introducing readers to books,

genres and authors they haven’t yet discovered. “I specifically don’t sell books for kids under age 13, mainly because other bookstores have them,” says Denisha, who focuses on young adult and adult books. “I want adults to have a space that’s a break from home life and where they can talk about anything.” The Cozy Bookshop will soon have a brick-and-mortar location. Denisha expects to open by January 2027, if not sooner. In addition to hosting monthly bookshop pop-ups in Ocala over the last year, she launched the Audiobook Walking Club in March 2026. Denisha has been walking and listening to audiobooks for at least a decade and thought other booklovers would like to join in.
