MOVEMENT INSPIRES MANY
THIS OCALA RUNNING CLUB IS CHANGING LIVES—ONE MORNING MILE AT A TIME.
What started out as a handful of men running together several days a week has blossomed into an enthusiastic running club with hundreds of participants.
Ocala residents Julius Bryant and Sean Price were pursuing their own tness journeys when they started running in March 2024. By August, there were ve in the dedicated group known as Men in Motion.
In the beginning they ran at Jervey Gantt, but after running downtown during the Christmas season, they kept that route.
Marion County native Eugina Lewis was looking for a run club when she heard about them from
a friend at the gym where the MIM guys worked out.
“I showed up for the rst time in November 2024 and have been running with them ever since,” says Eugina, who soon became the club’s social media content creator.
“Once I dropped that rst video, within 21 days we had 1,000 followers on Instagram and close to 100 runners of all ages,” says Eugina. “We now have 2,000 followers and about 300 runners.”
With so many new participants, Men in Motion became Movement Inspires Many.
Word spread quickly. MIM has even been featured on WCJB-20 news.
BY CYNTHIA MCFARLAND
The no-pressure Ocala Run Club has no minimum requirements. The route is three miles, but you don’t have to go the whole distance. The group runs at 5am every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
“You can run, walk, hop, skip or jump,” says Eugina. “The main purpose is to encourage people to move—whatever that looks and feels like for them. It’s very beginner friendly. Just show up. There’s no fee; it’s free.
“The energy and environment are so positive,” she continues. “We just try to create a safe place for people to come out and start their day. We’ve got a lot of student athletes running and mama bears with strollers realizing this is a safe place for them to get out and walk. Each morning’s run starts with a stretch and a prayer, putting God first. We’ve kept with that routine, and we end with a prayer.”
People who never ran previously are now running two and three miles consistently. Participants range in age from pre-K children to senior citizens.

Eugina Lewis Social Media Creator, MIM Ocala Run Club
“MIM has grown so fast in the last months. It’s proof that movement does inspire many!” says Eugina, adding that the original founders are still active in the club.
Want to check out MIM Ocala Run Club yourself? Get to the downtown Ocala square at 5am on Monday, Wednesday or Friday. October 11 is MIM’s first 5K and is held in collaboration with Kut Different, a boys’ mentorship program. To participate, register online at kutdifferent.org/legacy-run-5k

LEARNING AT LEISURE
IHMC COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAMS MAKE LEARNING FUN AND ACCESSIBLE FOR ALL. BY CYNTHIA MCFARLAND
Sure, learning something new can be entertaining, but it can also change your life.
Since the Institute for Human & Machine Cognition (IHMC) opened its Ocala campus, many students have been inspired to pursue new career paths and adults have found answers for health concerns and discovered new options and information on a variety of issues.
A not-for-pro t research institute of the Florida University System, IHMC has had a main campus in downtown Pensacola since 1999 and opened a branch campus in Ocala in 2010.
“We believe learning should never stop,” says Laurie Zink, development and community outreach director for IHMC’s Ocala campus. “We give people of all ages and backgrounds the opportunity to have free exposure to things they’ve never experienced so they can expand their knowledge.”
Science Saturdays
Minds open and possibilities expand when children are exposed to science in enjoyable ways. That’s the whole idea behind Science Saturdays.
“The goal is to show kids how fun science is because then they’re much more likely to be interested in science and math in school and to develop an interest in STEM elds,” explains Ursula Schwuttke, Ph.D., IHMC’s director of educational outreach.
Science Saturdays are free and take place once a month from September through April. Children in grades 3-7 can participate free of charge and enjoy hands-on activities.
Each session is led by an IHMC researcher or a community scientist. Topics include subjects like computer game design, 3-D printing, environmental sciences, secret
codes, the physics behind roller coaster design and much more. The 2025 fall sessions include Computer Game Design on October 4, Natural History of Butter ies on November 8 and Reaction Time on December 6.
“Some past Science Saturday attendees are now volunteering for these events, working in small groups with younger students, sharing their love for STEM elds and earning community service credit towards Bright Futures scholarships,” says Ursula.
“Ever since I was little and attended Science Saturdays myself, I always looked forward to learning from real life scientists,” says Rachel Han, a senior at Vanguard High in Ocala. “It inspired me to pursue a career in STEM and gave me the con dence to believe I could be successful in engineering.”
Registration begins two weeks prior to each session. Register at ihmc.us/life/science_saturdays
Robotics Camps
Since 2012, IHMC has held two Robotics Camps each summer where eighth through 10th grade students learn rst-hand about computer programming and
science and technology.
“We bring in experts you’d never hear speak unless you were in that respective eld,” says Laurie. “These are people who are at the top of their game in their respective elds. They’re passionate about the subjects they’re lecturing on and excited to share.”
Each lecture concludes with a Q&A period, during which attendees can ask questions of the expert. Refreshments, including wine and appetizers, are served prior to each lecture. Reception begins at 5:30pm, and lecture starts at 6pm.
Upcoming 2025 fall lectures include Reimagining Recycling with Regenerative Gasi cation
robotics. Camps are open to students from any Marion County school—public, charter, private or home schooled.
“What’s important to us is creating a fun learning environment that inspires a love for science at a young age,” notes Ursula.
Registration opens two months prior. Get further details and register online at ihmc.us/life/robotics-camp.

RHYTHM & RESCUES
HELPING THE HUMANE SOCIETY OF MARION COUNTY CHANGE LIVES ONE PAW AT A TIME.
Here’s your opportunity to make a difference for animals while enjoying Central Florida’s perfect fall weather. The Humane Society of Marion County’s Rhythm & Rescues event promises a familyfriendly afternoon of music, food and fun, all designed to help animals in need close to home, so mark your calendar for Saturday, November 15 from 2-5pm.
“It’s all about helping the animals,” says Executive Director Eddie Leedy. “The idea behind this fundraiser is to bring friends and family together, learn a little about the Humane Society and make an impact on our community. All proceeds from the
event will go directly toward the care and rehoming of the animals in our shelter and support our mission of saving lives.”
A non-pro t, no-kill shelter, the Humane Society of Marion County opened in 1964 and has changed many thousands of lives over the past six decades. Committed to caring for and protecting animals in our county, the shelter adopts out 130 to 150 animals every month. For example, in July alone, 98 cats and 50 dogs found new adoptive homes.
Rhythm & Rescues takes place at The Pavilion at Green Gaits, a venue that offers the ideal outdoor setting. Enjoy live music under the covered pavilion
with popular local artists Emma Forgette and Houston Keen.
K-Country DJ Lewis Stokes from 93.7FM keeps the action rolling all afternoon.
Food is provided by Juleps on the Green. Ticket holders can choose from a chicken Caesar salad wrap with fries or a hotdog
BY CYNTHIA MCFARLAND
topped with BBQ sauce, cole slaw and fried onions, also served with fries. There’s a vegetarian option of pasta salad with mixed veggies. Beer and wine are available for purchase at the venue.
The silent auction features several small items, but the two main items up for bid are a dazzling pair of diamond earrings from Augustus Fine Jewelers and
a two-night getaway at SpringHill Suites by Marriot. There’s also a 50/50 raffle.
Because a crowded event could be stressful for animals, the Humane Society isn’t bringing adoptable pets to the venue. Anyone interested in adoption can view photos of available dogs and cats at the kiosk on-site and make plans to visit them at the shelter.
