THROUGH JULY 24 The historic Marion Theatre is excited to announce this year’s Summer Kids Film Series. Movies will be screened every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at 10am, 11am, 12:30pm and 1:30pm each day. Tickets are $5 for adults and children. A summer snack pack is included for children 12 and under. Movies include Cars, Lilo and Stitch, Kung Fu Panda, Madagascar, Sing 2, Ratatouille, Finding Nemo and How to Train Your Dragon. Constellation Exhibit Through July 16 The College of Central Florida’s Webber Gallery presents the work of local artists in the upcoming exhibition Constellation, on display through July 16. This themed exhibition will explore traditional and nontraditional concepts of the term. Expanding beyond its astronomical origins, the exhibition approaches constellations as an open-ended concept that each artist will engage with in their own way. The exhibition will feature works across multiple mediums, including ink, paint, cyanotype, collage and more. The Webber Gallery is located at the CF Ocala Campus and is open Monday through Friday, 10am-4pm.

City of Ocala Aquatic Fun Centers Throughout Summer Beat the summer heat at one of the City of Ocala Aquatic Fun Centers.

dventure doesn’t have to require a road trip. Just minutes from home, Silver Springs State Park is rolling out new events, fresh experiences and exciting updates that make now a great time for a return visit.

Whether it’s a cruise aboard a glass bottom boat followed by a yummy brunch, an educational speaker series or improvements designed to enhance the visitor experience, there’s plenty happening at this iconic local destination. We caught up with the vice president of the Friends of Silver Springs State Park, Michael Warren, to get the inside scoop.

A non-profit citizen support organization, the Friends of Silver Springs State Park works to support Silver Springs, primarily through volunteering, fundraising and educational outreach. Members share a passion to protect the park and connect the community through this shared treasure.

“Our fundraising activities have supported a variety of park initiatives, including community events like SpringsFest, as well as maintenance inside the park,” explains Michael. “Currently we’re planning to provide the park with a towable blower to help keep trails and firebreaks maintained.”

If you haven’t visited the park in a while, you’ll notice a lot that’s new and you’ll want to check out the full schedule of events happening throughout the summer.

“I’m particularly excited about the new trail systems, including a new bridge over the Fort King paddle trail that connects the headspring area to the south side of the park, the swamp trail and the museum," says Micheal. "It’s an outstanding new trail. You’ll also want to check out the new Paradise Treats café near the glass bottom boats, as well as a new food truck at the kayak launch area.”

In addition to its popular canoe, kayak and paddleboard rentals and

tours and the historic glass bottom boat rides (which are all-electric now, if you haven’t ridden aboard one lately!), Silver Springs State Park is offering several new events and experiences this summer.

With the Boat & Brunch experience, guests can enjoy a 30-minute ride on the world-famous glass-bottom boats, gliding over crystal-clear waters filled with history and wildlife. After your tour, savor a delicious Sunday brunch at the Springside Café. You can even add a mimosa or a carafe of blackberry sangria to make it extra special!

Pricing is under $40 per person, in addition to the park admission of $2 per person. Tour times are offered at 9am, 9:30am, 10am and 10:30am on select Sundays.

The Summer Speakers Series at the Silver River Museum lets guests explore Florida history, culture and nature with engaging guest speakers. The remaining sessions feature Amanda Marek,

a UF/IFAS Florida landscaping agent, on July 11, offering expert tips on creating beautiful, waterwise landscaping using native Florida plants, and Matthew Griffin, a living history specialist, on July 25, exploring the powerful history of the Black Seminole during the Seminole Wars and Florida’s early history. Presentations are free with park admission, and all presentations begin at 10am at the Silver River Museum. For more information on this specific event, visit silverrivermuseum.com.

If you’re interested in getting further involved with the park, consider purchasing a Friends of Silver Springs State Park membership. A general membership is just $25 annually and includes up to 12 free park entrances, including up to eight visitors per visit—that’s a value of $192. So if you visit the park more than a couple of times a year (and you should!), becoming a Friend saves you quite a bit. In

addition, membership includes special events and activities only open to members.

Whether you come for a peaceful paddle on the river, to look for the famous monkeys that call the trees along the river home or just to wander through the park’s trails, a visit to this multi-faceted treasure is never a wasted day. Its beauty will keep you coming back over and over again.

“For me, it’s kayaking and hiking,” says Michael. “Every trip down the river by kayak is refreshing and fascinating. There’s always a new bird lurking on the shoreline or a new family of manatees and all sorts of wildlife.

Its scenic and natural beauty draws visitors from around the world, and it’s a centerpiece of our local environment.”

Multiple ongoing youth sports programs are on the calendar that have nothing to do with horses.

“Summer programming is about creating opportunities for young athletes to learn, compete and have fun in a positive environment,” says Wyatt Stephens, director of Sports at WEC. “We’re proud to offer experiences that help kids grow both on and off the field, and we look forward to growing our programs for the community in the future.”

Open Field Play provides a pickup soccer experience for high school players ages 13-17 of all skill levels.

Through August 6, players can take part in pickup games on Thursday evenings from 5:30-10pm. Don’t worry about summer weather; games are held indoors on turf in a climate-controlled exposition center.

“I didn’t find out it had belonged to him until right before closing,” says Barbara. “We went into one of the buildings and there was one of his printers they had given to us. We opened the top and there was a picture of Mel Tillis!”

You couldn’t ask for a more peaceful setting. Tucked along a private lake, sheltered by majestic trees and bordered by the Ocala National Forest, this is the very definition of “retreat.” Only five

miles from Silver Springs and 10 miles from downtown Ocala, the property is secluded but not isolated.

Marietta Cypress Acres features four buildings—a main house, lake house, bunkhouse and gym.

The three houses have been thoughtfully updated with modern comforts and can accommodate 38 overnight guests.

The 5,700-square-foot main house is brimming with designer

“This is such a beautiful place, it seemed selfish to not share it with anyone else. That’s why we did Airbnb,” says Barbara. “We are getting to be known as the wedding and family reunion spot.

That’s the majority of our rentals now. We can host up to 175 guests.”

If it feels like everyone is headed to a concert this summer, you’re not imagining things.

The summer concert calendar is stacked with big-name artists. Tampa and Orlando venues continue to attract major touring acts spanning country, pop, rock and Latin music, while amphitheaters throughout the state host everything from stadium-worthy headliners to nostalgic reunion tours.

Music festival season is equally busy. Refreshing: Scallop Season Is Here For many Ocala families, summer isn’t complete without a scalloping trip to Florida’s Gulf Coast.

Often described as an underwater Easter egg hunt, scalloping involves snorkeling in shallow seagrass beds while searching for bay scallops hidden below the surface. The closest scalloping destinations to Ocala are Crystal River and Homosassa, both about an hour away. • 1 Dandy Sweet Corn Tray (4 count) • 1 lime, juice only (about 2 tablespoons) • 1 cup mayonnaise or Mexican crema • 2 tablespoons Elote seasoning • 1 cup cotija cheese, crumbled • fresh cilantro, chopped, for garnish • hot sauce or chili powder (optional) Heat grill to medium-high heat. Place corn directly on grates and cook 10-15 minutes, turning every 2-3 minutes, until charred and cooked through. While corn is still warm, squeeze lime juice on all sides. Brush or spoon mayonnaise on each ear, ensuring all sides are coated. Evenly sprinkle Elote seasoning over coated corn.

Using hands, gently press seasoning into mayo. Arrange Elote on serving platter, sprinkle with cotija cheese and garnish with fresh chopped cilantro. Serve with hot sauce or chili powder for extra heat, if desired.
