THROUGHOUT SUMMER The Learn to Swim program consists of eight lessons over a two-week period. Students are placed in groups according to their swimming levels.

Students will learn to be efficient swimmers; additional aquatic skills; and how to stay safe around water, float and stroke. Lessons take place Mondays-Thursdays for ages 4-12.

The College of Central Florida’s Webber Gallery presents the work of local artists in the upcoming exhibition Constellation, on display through July 16. This themed exhibition will explore traditional and nontraditional concepts of the term. Expanding beyond its astronomical origins, the exhibition approaches constellations as an open-ended concept that each artist will engage with in their own way. The exhibition will feature works across multiple mediums, including ink, paint, cyanotype, collage and more. The Webber Gallery is located at the CF Ocala Campus and is open Monday-Friday, 10am-4pm. JUNE 3-JULY 24 The historic Marion Theatre is excited to announce this year’s Summer Kids Film Series. Movies will be screened every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at 10am, 11am, 12:30pm and 1:30pm each day. Tickets are $5 for adults and children. A summer snack pack is included for children 12 and under.

Movies include: Cars, Lilo and Stitch, Kung Fu Panda, Madagascar, Sing 2, Ratatouille, Finding Nemo, How to Train Your Dragon and more.

City of Ocala Aquatic Fun Centers Throughout Summer Beat the summer heat at one of the City of Ocala Aquatic Fun Centers.

Each center has spray features, a waterfall and water slides. Each pool has a zero-inch depth entry for easy access. One-time admission (valid for one swim session) is $3 per child and $5 per adult. Session times are 10am-1pm and 2-5pm.

The Jervey Gantt center is open Sunday and Monday for afternoon sessions only and TuesdaySaturday for both sessions. The Hampton center is open SundayThursday for afternoon sessions and Friday and Saturday for both sessions. The Jervey Gantt center will be open weekends only starting August 9 and will close on September 7. The Hampton center will close on August 2. WEC Open Field Play Through August 8 Sports at WEC’s Open Field Play returns through August 8, bringing premium pickup soccer to athletes of all ability levels. painting and dance workshops as well. Our arts interventions with clients show an increase in self-esteem, autonomy and fine motor skills and allow those with intellectual and physical disabilities to express themselves nonverbally.”

The first Hear Us Roar took place in the summer of 2024. The Arc expressed interest in creating a “talent show” for the clients alongside AIHOM musicians.

“I thought, ‘Why not expand this into a fundraiser to continue our work with the clients?’ so I approached our friends at Ocala Civic Theatre, and they graciously allowed us to hold the event there,” says Patricia. “Family and friends got to see their loved ones singing on stage, treated as arts professionals, alongside AIHOM’s music arts

practitioners. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house.”

Since 2024, the performance has grown to include solos by The Arc clients, and this year, Hear Us Roar will incorporate dancing into the event as well. While the clients are singing, the words to the songs will be shown onscreen so the audience can participate, too, turning it into a joyous, familyfriendly sing-along.

he third annual Hear Us Roar event, benefiting Arts in Health Ocala Metro (AIHOM) and The Arc of Marion, offers an inspiring evening of lively, singalong-style performances where clients from The Arc of Marion take the stage alongside acclaimed AIHOM musicians Becky Baby, David Reinwald and Brandon Dull.

The result is a joyful, high-energy celebration that invites the audience to participate, connect and celebrate the arts together.

Founded by Lisa Irwin in 2022 with the belief that art is not an accessory to healing but an essential partner, AIHOM has grown from an innovative vision into an awardwinning healing arts leader, serving more than 16,000 people to date.

“AIHOM has always embraced a multidisciplinary approach to both who we serve and how we serve them by weaving together different types of art to meet people where they are,” says Patricia Tomlinson, M.A., AIHOM’s executive director.

“For example, visual art can spark memory in seniors, music can help with pain relief in hospital settings, literary arts offer community and reflection among those recovering from addiction and dance can help tune fine motor skills in people who are intellectually disabled.”

For more than three years, AIHOM has partnered with The Arc of Marion to provide free, ongoing workshops in visual art, music and movement for adults with intellectual disabilities. Hear Us Roar III represents the culmination of that work, offering participants the opportunity to share their talents on stage and present their artwork as practicing artists.

“AIHOM’s collaboration with the Arc of Marion is one of our oldest and dearest,” says Patricia.

“We began music workshops with The Arc clients in early 2023, and our work has expanded to weekly

General admission tickets are $25 ($30 at the door) and include entry to the 7pm show and access to purchase artwork following the performance. The funds raised from Hear Us Roar allow AIHOM to continue arts programming at The Arc of Marion and The Arc. “Hear us Roar is the feel-good event of the year,” says Patricia.

“From the excitement of the participants onstage to the sheer joy of the audience, it is always such an incredible night.”

he learning shouldn’t stop just because it’s summer.

At the Discovery Center, families can keep the education—and fun—going all summer long.

“Discovery Center is Ocala’s local children’s science center located in Tuscawilla Park,” says Misti Barrett, the City of Ocala’s Recreation and Parks Department public relations specialist. “It’s a place where kids can learn in a fun, hands-on way.”

With school out for the summer, it’s a great time for kids to continue falling in love with learning. STEAM—that’s science, technology, engineering, art and math—gives equal focus to these vital components of education.

“We want kids to stay engaged and curious,” says Misti, “and by offering a new program every day throughout the week, we ensure they always have something new to look forward to when they visit the Discovery Center.”

Summer at the Discovery Center is packed with activities. Visitors can enjoy the Wonder Lab, Story Time Science, Critter Chats and the StarLab. Families can also celebrate July 4th with free entry from 10am2pm. Visitors ages 18 and over can enjoy the center’s Date Nights, where adults can explore the exhibit after hours, enjoy light refreshments and take part in themed activities.

Outside of the newest traveling exhibit and special summertime events, the Discovery Center also houses a variety of animals, a 450-gallon freshwater tank featuring native Florida plants and fish, and weekly programs. The center also provides fall and spring classes focusing on art, science and robotics.

“The Discovery Center is committed to serving our community by providing a welcoming space where families can return again and again,” says Misti. “We create opportunities for hands-on learning,

Treehouses: Looking Who’s Living in the Trees Discover life in the trees this summer! Families are invited to explore the Discovery Center’s newest exhibit, Treehouses: Look Who’s Living in the Trees, and discover the animals that call trees home. The exhibit will be on display through September 19.

“This exhibit is an interactive experience allowing guests to become animal trackers, come face to face with wildlife, move along the Forest Sound Dance Floor, build a treehouse [and] learn about sustainable logging—all while exploring how trees are used in everyday life,” says Misti.

With the Treehouse exhibit, guests can roam from tree to tree and explore the many habitats trees provide for animals large and small.

Visitors can search for signs left by raccoons, woodpeckers, bears and other tree-dwelling species, cross a wobbly suspension bridge and climb through two large treehouses.

Wonder Lab This series will follow a STEAMcentered theme every week throughout summer with a complimentary hands-on activity.

Drop in during lab hours to do a quick and fun activity.

“Examples of hands-on activities visitors can expect at Wonder Lab include collage art, learning about sound science through cup phones, clay sculpture and creating musical shakers,” explains Misti. “Wonder Lab is geared toward ages 2 to 10, but we are happy to accommodate

younger learners who may need activity modifications.”

Weekly themes include All About Amphibians (June 2-6), Cut-nPaste Collage (June 9-13), Magnet Mania (June 16-20, closed on June 19), Printmaking Studio (June 2327), Sound Science (June 30-July 2), Rocks Rock! (July 7-11), Clay Creations (July 14-18), Light Science (July 21-25) and Science of Motion (July 28-August 1). The programs take place from 1:30-3:30pm and is free with admission to the Discovery Center.

Date Night at the Discovery Center Discover a new way to do date night at Ocala’s Discovery Center. From 6-8:30pm, couples ages 18 and over will enjoy light appetizers, kid-free playtime in the current exhibit and themed, hands-on activities.

The June 5 event is titled Love Birds, where date night will soar to new heights. Enjoy feathery facts, bird house constructing and themed refreshments. The July 17

event is titled Solar Science, and couples can cozy up in the StarLab planetarium dome and learn about solar science. Afterward, use your new knowledge to create sun crafts.

“Date Nights aren’t just for couples,” Misti emphasizes.

“Anyone can attend. It’s a great option for a girls’ night out, a group of friends looking to try something new or even a mother-daughter evening out on the town.”

The event is $30 per couple, and registration is required. Seats are limited, and pre-registration is required for entry. The program is for adults 18 and older.

My Country, ‘Tis of Thee: Celebrating American Art and Design Through September 13 Now on view at the Appleton Museum of Art, a campus of the College of Central Florida, My Country, ’Tis of Thee: Celebrating American Art and Design highlights more than three centuries of American art and design, with works ranging from contemporary furniture and pop art to historical photos and documents reflecting the unique history of Marion County and Florida.

The exhibition is organized into themes inspired by the lyrics of

“My Country, ’Tis of Thee.” This patriotic anthem was written in 1831 by Massachusetts native Samuel Francis Smith. The song debuted in public on July 4, 1831, at a children’s Independence Day celebration at the Park Street Church in Boston.

The exhibition opens with a large-scale timeline tracing Florida’s history from the American Revolution to the present day.

Beginning in 1776, when Florida served as a refuge for Loyalists, the timeline culminates with Ocala native and Olympic gold medalist Erin Jackson, who was selected by her peers as a U.S. flagbearer at the Winter Olympics opening ceremony.

“CF is the proud home of the CF Patriots. As such, the Appleton team selected an array of 114 iconic American treasures from over three centuries,” says Jason Steuber, Appleton Museum director. “The curated

CAN YOU ESCAPE?

I

f you’ve never experienced the thrill of taking on an escape room, you’re in for quite the introduction.

Opening in Ocala in 2021, and expanding to Gainesville in 2024, Huddy’s Escape won the TripAdvisor Travelers Choice Award in both 2025 and 2026, which means you don’t have to go far to take on a top-notch escape adventure. “[These accolades put] us as a top 10 percent business in our industry,” says owner Adam Tencza.

“We are also ranked No. 3 on TripAdvisor for all escape rooms in Florida. We have our beer and wine license in Gainesville as of April 2026, and we offer some of the most compelling and cinematic-style escape rooms in the industry.”

Part puzzle, part scavenger hunt and part immersive adventure, escape rooms challenge players to solve clues and complete tasks within a themed environment before time runs out. Most experiences place groups inside a carefully designed setting, such as a haunted mansion, secret laboratory or pirate ship, where participants must work together to uncover hidden objects, crack codes and piece together a storyline.

While the name “escape room” suggests players are locked inside, most modern escape rooms are more about completing a mission than physically escaping. The goal could be solving a mystery, stopping a disaster or finding hidden treasure, all while racing against the clock.

“We have had 75,000 guests personally visit our locations, everyone from birthday parties to senior citizens visiting with a ladies’ group,” says Adam. “The average group is either a family of four to five or a friend group between the ages of 20 and 40 years old. We have one scary game at our locations, but it’s not so much about jump scaring

you as it is more of a focus on psychological effects and fear.”

According to Adam, escape rooms should be cinematic, immersive worlds you step into, and that’s exactly how the rooms are built and designed at Huddy’s Escape. Huddy’s Escape ensures guests are at ease and taken care of from the minute they first step through the door.

“We make it very easy,” says Adam. “They book their game on our website, we give them pre-game instructions and back stories, and then get them started. We guide them by talking to them overhead in the room and help them solve a puzzle they might be struggling on with a hint. They play the game by solving puzzles and advancing forward through the story to the end.

This lasts up to 60 minutes, and then they come up front and take photos and head out.”

Huddy’s Escape currently offers three rooms in its Ocala location.

Nineteen70 is the business’ scary adventure, while The Missing Toymaker and Tomb of Tales are family-friendly, adventure-style rooms. Adam is also currently designing and building a new room, Madness In The Red Court, which will be the business’ most cinematic game to date. A Wonderland-inspired escape room game, it is scheduled to be completed early this month.

“I design and build [the rooms] myself,” says Adam. “I build these cinematic experiences that get better and better as time goes on mainly inspired by my own love and desire of fun adventures and games. I love scary, but we can’t only do scary—and scary can only be so scary if that makes sense.

The rest of the games [are built with] me knowing that we need to be diversified and offer family experiences for everyone. I really focus on putting into our escape rooms that extra punch that you

typical do not find in escape rooms.”

Having built 20 games throughout the country for other owners, Adam is definitely an escape room expert, but his only real advice for escaping his games is to just have fun.

“Take in the experience and solve the puzzles while getting help from our amazing game masters as needed,” Adam suggests. “About 85 percent of people escape at our escape rooms. Some great qualities of good escapers are guests that are really observant, observing the set design and thinking ‘hmmm, why?’”

“I hope people get to escape the stress of life,” Adam continues.

It’s

the rare business still going strong more than a century after it began. But then, Eaton’s Beach Sandbar & Grill on Lake Weir is not your typical business.

What began as a dream for world champion cyclist Jay Eaton expanded and bloomed over the decades.

When Randy and Sue Keuntjes bought the historic property in 2006, they made it their mission to bring out the best in the beloved lakeside haven known as “the beach within reach.”

Forget Daytona. You don’t have to drive to the Atlantic to savor the vacation vibe of sand in your toes, sunset on the water and a breeze on your face as you sip the perfect cocktail beneath a thatched tiki hut.

That magic is found much closer to home, thanks to Eaton’s Beach.

DECADES OF HISTORY Jay Eaton became a cycling champion in the 1890s, twice breaking the world mile record.

The New Jersey native came

to Florida with a vision. In the early 1920s, he bought land on the south side of Lake Weir with the idea of creating a southern version of “Coney Island,” complete with boardwalks.

Eaton and his sons cleared the land by the lake, built a boardwalk, dive tower, boat house and even a bowling alley. Their waterfront retreat opened for business in 1924 and soon became a popular hangout where locals and tourists alike came to play.

original pinball machines are long gone, but the heartfelt tradition behind this popular lakeside destination continues to thrive.

After Eaton’s death, the property was owned by the Houser family and then the Enos family, who both made their own contributions to its legacy. When the Keuntjes family purchased Eaton’s Beach, they made necessary updates to bring the establishment into the 21st century but have painstakingly maintained the spirit of the operation that makes it so unique.

“Each family that owned it has added their own personal touches,” says Juli Pennington, general manager. “Obviously the location is perfect, but there’s nothing ‘corporate’ about this place. We are a mom-and-pop business that has worked really hard to get where we’re at.”

Juli and her husband, Lloyd, who is operations manager, have worked with the Keuntjes family since 2013. In addition to Eaton’s Beach Sandbar & Grill, Randy and Sue Keuntjes also own Ski Beach Bar & Grill in Leesburg 26

and recently acquired Ivy on the Square in January 2026.

Since the Keuntjes family bought Eaton’s Beach, the biggest changes have been the rebuild of the original two-story structure and a revived menu.

“Randy is brilliant at creating a business and putting people together who do what they need to do, including the right chef to create a menu and the right people to run the restaurant,” says Juli.

When the original building was rebuilt in 2006 to meet code standards, Randy made sure that the legacy of Eaton’s Beach would be preserved.

“We are a Christian-based restaurant. There are four Bibles buried in the four corners of the building,” says Juli. “We built this on the premise of service. We like to be the favorite of the locals and where they bring their friends. Our motto is ‘to be the favorite of the people we serve.’”

One of the joys of coming to Eaton’s Beach is the tangible sense of history here. The walls literally tell a story. A Hall of History on the main level of the restaurant

features many old photos.

“Artist Dale Henry has done the vignette artwork around the restaurant, and some of his work pays homage to Jay Eaton the cyclist,” says Juli. “Lisa Dinkins also did some of the artwork, signs and photos.”

Some of the artwork on the chalkboards was done by Angie Keuntjes, Randy and Sue’s late daughter, whose handiwork is also visible on the nautical markers. Family influence is displayed throughout the restaurant, keeping in line with the establishment’s heritage.

An old snooker table, dating back to when the Houser family owned the restaurant, hangs from the ceiling in one room.

One of the classic “residents” of Eaton’s Beach is the taxidermy alligator proudly mounted above the bar since his capture in 2009. The enormous gator is affectionately named “Florisiana.”

A “fun on the water” lake vibe is visible throughout the restaurant where décor includes water skis, fishing poles, wake boards and more.

“We also have Ski-Daddle chairs out front that are made by a local businessman who makes chairs and tables from recycled water skis,” says Juli.

MEMORABLE MENU The menu is a tantalizing combination of flavors that includes Cajun, Creole, Spanish and down-home country. Featuring a masterful blend of Southern and Louisiana culinary inspiration, the Florisiana menu was crafted by Chef Dave Del Rio. “Chef Dave was with us from menu creation and opening in 2013 until he passed in 2017; this menu was his final creation,” says Juli. “Much of it was connected to Dave’s heritage with Ybor City.”

That influence is found in such dishes as Shrimp Creole, Ybor City Gumbo, Bayou Pasta, Cajun Sweet Fried Chicken and many more. Everyone raves about the award-winning 3C’s Little B’s Mac & Cheese with its homemade three-cheese sauce, Andouille sausage and seasoned smoked ham topped with diced tomato and seasoned breadcrumbs.

Since 2023, the kitchen has been in the capable hands of Chef Rich Oaks. The Alabama native has been a chef in this area for over 20 years and brought his reputation for success to Eaton’s Beach.

He’s made sure that the establishment continues to be known for fresh menu options brimming with flair.

“We’re a quality, from-scratch kitchen. Nothing comes in readymade frozen. We have a big walk-in and a tiny freezer,” says Chef Rich.

“All our food is packed with flavor; that’s the Cajun influence,” he says. “Soups and sauces are my forte. My signature dish is a broccoli, bacon and tomato stuffed chicken breast with a fire-roasted red pepper pesto.”

For guests who’ve never eaten at Eaton’s Beach, he recommends ordering either the Bronzed Red Fish or the Shrimp ‘n’ Grits, both of which are signature dishes.

Of course, if you’re coming on a Sunday, brunch is the obvious choice.

“Our prime rib is the best in town. It’s my personal recipe,” says Chef Rich. “We slow roast it

overnight and serve it on our allyou-can-eat Sunday brunch. We’ve been doing this about five years.

People come for the prime rib and the bottomless mimosas.”

“Since Chef Dave created the original menu, there have been some additions; we added the Bronzed Red Fish and a spinach and crab dip. We also rotate etouffee on and off the menu,” says Juli.

Guests who show up wearing Eaton’s Beach gear and dine in on Wednesdays, get 10 percent off their food order.

Look for the wandering magician, usually on Saturdays, who goes from table to table entertaining guests.

SANDBAR DOWNSTAIRS The two-story restaurant offers dining on both the main level and downstairs in the Sandbar, which has beach access. Everywhere food is served is under cover. This includes the tiki huts, thatched decks that were added after 2006.

“The Sandbar has been open with our full menu since 2020,”

Juli explains. “Prior to that it was snacks and then steamed shellfish.

When we merged the steam shack items onto our main menu and offered the full menu upstairs and downstair, we hit the mark. This allows us to serve everybody with a full wait staff.”

Although the downstairs Sandbar is bathing-suit friendly, casual attire is required to dine upstairs.

“We wanted families to be able to bring their kids and come eat while they’re wet and sandy, not worrying about getting dressed to eat,” says Juli, noting that this is also why plastic cups and utensils are used downstairs.

It’s not unusual for guests to arrive at the restaurant by boat.

The dock has 16 slips where you can pull in and tie up.

RAISE A GLASS It’s not just great food that brings guests to Eaton’s Beach again and again. It’s the ideal location to enjoy handcrafted cocktails with a view, whether you’re sitting inside with windows all around or out on the beach.

YEAR-ROUND CELEBRATIONS Live entertainment on the deck every Friday, Saturday and Sunday is a big draw. “We always have local musicians, usually one person or a two-piece group,” says Juli.

Eaton’s Beach makes it easy to have fun with a variety of community happenings. Favorite annual traditions include the popular Fourth of July event, which is a whole day celebration. The band performs from 5 to 9pm, and Houston Keen is back again this year. The much-anticipated fireworks over Lake Weir at dusk are always a highlight.

The holiday season kicks off on the first Saturday of December with a boat parade, which Eaton’s Beach took over in 2025. This family-friendly event raises money for deserving local charities.

Specialized group activities are also on the calendar. For example, once a month there is a painting class that includes a tasty beverage for added inspiration.

PLAN YOUR VISIT has long been a favorite event spot for weddings, corporate luncheons and dinners, birthday and anniversary celebrations, private parties and celebration of life events.

“We also offer corporate catering both on-site and off-site,” says Juli, adding that Christmas parties book up well in advance.

The Owner’s Deck can be rented and has concierge service, making it perfect for small parties and family events. This deck is adjacent to the beach but under cover.

There’s no need to have a designated driver if you’re coming to a group event and live within a half-hour of the restaurant.

“We have a shuttle bus that will pick up 10 to 14 people within 30 minutes of Eaton’s Beach.

Just call to reserve it for a group gathering,” says Juli. “We usually need at least 48 hours’ notice.

This way if we’re having a painting party with free margaritas, you can come and paint, enjoy your margarita and the bus will take you home.”

come in the morning and eat brunch, then go to the beach to play on the water, eat lunch and then have dinner at the end of the day.”

The beach features a volleyball court and picnic tables; there are umbrellas with chairs for rental.

Thanks to Eaton’s Beach Aquatic Sports, you can enjoy time on the water in a variety of fun ways. Rent a kayak, paddleboard or two- or four-person pedal boat. (Pedal boats have foot pedals; imagine a bicycle on a paddleboard.)

Beach equipment is available on a first-come, first-serve basis, so act promptly if you plan to spend the day in the sun.

You can even rent a pontoon boat (they have two) and explore Lake Weir at your leisure. Pontoon boats easily accommodate eight to 10 people and can be reserved for a minimum of two hours.

If you’d rather kick back and let someone else man the boat, sign on for a one-hour lake tour (four person minimum, 10 person max).

The sunset cruise is especially popular. Grab a drink before you board. Then sit back, relax and savor the stunning views for the next hour on the water. (Call for cruise times and availability.)

With a full bar on both levels of the restaurant, bar manager Kenzie Barman (yes, that’s her real name!) comes up with a variety of creative drink specials, with different drinks featured monthly.

“We have the best Bloody Marys made with imported Jimmy Luvs Bloody Mary mix from Wisconsin. People will come all day for those,” says Juli. “No one else in the state of Florida serves Jimmy Luvs. Aside from Ski Beach Bar & Grill, we are the only place serving Jimmy Luvs Blood Marys.”

Happy Hour is 2 to 5pm Monday through Friday. Margarita Mondays feature $5 classic margaritas and $6 flavored margaritas. On Thirsty Thursdays, patrons get $1 off liquor, beer and wine all day.
