PATTERNS OF COLOR

CELEBRATE COLORFUL TRADITION ON THE FLORIDA QUILT TRAIL.

What’s not to love about a public art movement rooted in history and tradition?

That’s the story behind the Barn Quilt Trail found across America and Canada, and you can discover it for yourself within a short drive of Marion County.

The movement began in 2001 with Donna Sue Groves in Adams County, Ohio. To honor her mother, a skilled quilter, Donna Sue painted a quilt square on the family barn. That single square expanded into a community project featuring a trail of 20 barn quilts throughout the county.

The project cultivated community pride and tourism. What started in one Ohio county spread across the nation. Now thousands of quilt blocks and trails are found in over 40 states and Canada.

Stephanie Metts, owner of the Suwannee Valley Quilt Shoppe in Trenton, Florida, ended up bringing the Barn Quilt Trail to the Sunshine State in 2013.

“I had gone to Sisters, Oregon, where they had an outdoor quilt show. I tried to get that started in Trenton and that led to doing a festival and then to the Barn Quilt Trail,” says Stephanie. “There was no trail in Florida, so I decided to start one and got involved with quilt groups in other states. I worked with Janet Moses in Lake City who painted some of the quilt blocks, and the trail expanded.”

Support from the City of Trenton, Gilchrist County Commission and Gilchrist County Chamber of Commerce helped make the trail a reality.

The rst block, “Trenton’s

Compass Rose,” is located at the Suwannee Valley Quilt Shoppe. Additional blocks were painted on the wall of a 1910 grocery and dry goods store that became home to Trenton’s Suwannee Valley Quilt Museum. Other locations include the Crystal Ice House, Trenton’s Railroad Depot, Best Drugs, the local Ace Hardware store, the veterinary hospital, Cherry’s Restaurant and Trenton Floral & Gifts.

Stephanie says that specialty quilt blocks were designed for Billy Smith, a large local watermelon grower, plus three patriotic blocks on the Quilt Shoppe Building to honor rst responders and veterans.

The art is based mostly on real quilt block patterns, but instead of using fabric, it’s painted on wood panels with weather-resistant paint

to withstand the elements. The colorful blocks are typically 8-by-8foot square.

Trenton, the epicenter of the Florida Quilt Trail and closest to Central Florida, has now been joined by Barn Quilt Trails in six Florida counties: Escambia, Madison, Hamilton, Suwannee, Bradford and Gilchrist.

Although Stephanie, now 83, has retired and sold her quilt shop, she’s proud of the Barn Quilt Trail she launched in Florida and remains active hosting the Rose Cottage Quilters in Gainesville.

SAVE THE TURTLES!

CELEBRATE WORLD SEA TURTLE DAY ON JUNE 16.

According to the World Wildlife Fund, sea turtles play a fundamental role in maintaining healthy marine ecosystems, like seagrass beds and coral reefs. Maintaining these ecosystems also bene ts commercially valuable species, such as shrimp, lobster and tuna.

Sea turtles represent a group of reptiles that have lived on Earth and remained essentially unchanged for the last 110 million years. Sea turtles swim thousands of miles during their lifetimes, journeying between the sea and land where they lay eggs. Depending on the species, sea turtles can take between 10 and 50 years to reproduce, with loggerheads—the most common sea turtle species in Florida— reaching maturity in 25-35 years. Females lay hundreds of eggs in one nesting season, but few hatchlings will survive their rst year of life.

Beyond the challenges that their natural reproduction poses, sea turtles face many threats directly caused by humans, including illegal trade, climate change, encroachment of coastal development on their nesting beaches and accidental drownings in shing gear.

What Can You Do To Save Sea Turtles?

1. Become a responsible seafood consumer. Ask where and how your seafood was caught. Choose seafood that was caught in ways that do not harm sea turtles.

2. Never feed or attempt to feed sea turtles. Whether you see them in the ocean or on the beach, feeding sea turtles is both harmful and illegal.

3. Reduce and help clean up marine debris. Human trash can entangle or be accidentally eaten by sea turtles. Carry reusable water

bottles and shopping bags. Refrain from releasing balloons during celebrations.

4. Keep beaches dark and safe during nesting season. In Florida, nesting season happens from March-October. During this time, turn o all outside lights visible from the beach. Lights disorient hatchlings trying to reach the ocean and discourage nesting females from coming onto the beach to lay eggs.

5. Do not disturb nesting turtles, nests or hatchlings. Report any sightings, new nests or harassment by calling the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission at 1-888-404-FWCC or *FWC from your cell phone.

Sea Turtle Conservation Nesting Ride-Along

Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, through September 5

6. Remove recreational beach equipment. At the end of your beach day, take in all chairs and umbrellas, ll in holes and knock down sandcastles before you leave the beach. They can become obstacles for nesting turtles or emerging hatchlings.

7. When boating, watch for sea turtles in the water. Give them at least 50 yards of space, and if you see them closer, put your engine in neutral to avoid injury.

8. Be careful with fishing gear. Never leave shing gear, including hooks, lines or nets, in the water, on the beach or on a pier. Dispose of these items in the trash. They can entangle and kill sea turtles.

Embark on an exclusive ride-along adventure with Clearwater Marine Aquarium’s sea turtle patrol team. You will be fully immersed during this educational excursion on the beach with sea turtle nesting biologists. GET GROWING!

SEED LIBRARY INSPIRES GREEN THUMBS.

Books aren’t the only thing you can check out at the Marion County Public Library System. Thanks to the new Seed Library, you can check out free seeds for owers, vegetables, fruits, herbs and more.

Many of us started gardening for the rst time during the pandemic lockdowns. It wasn’t just a passing trend. Today, 55 percent of American households have a garden.

From owers to veggies, gardening is a rewarding pursuit and can even help with grocery bills. According to recent surveys, the average U.S. home garden produces $600 worth of food.

Well over 200 people attended the Seed Library grand opening on April 19, at the Hhadquarters of the Ocala Public Library. The Florida Forest Service even provided slash pine saplings as giveaways.

The program is o to a great start. Nearly 1,000 seed packets were checked out in just the rst week.

Ready to get your hands dirty and discover your green thumb? All

you need to participate is a library card, which you can get for free at any of the nine Marion County Public Library System locations.

Look through the Seed Library catalog at any library branch to determine which seeds you want. Each card holder can check out up to four packets of seeds at a time. When you “check out” seeds, you obviously aren’t expected to return those seeds, but you are encouraged to participate in your own gardening adventure.

division manager.

If you do save seeds from what you grow—a practice that is very common with heirloom plants— you’re invited to share them with the community through the Seed Library. As seed donations come in, they’ll be cataloged and made available through the program.

“People are already donating seeds. Going forward, this will be a community e ort. All Marion County library locations are participating. Our goal is to keep this initiative growing,” notes Heather, adding that volunteers are welcome.

BEYOND HEADS & TAILS

KIDS

COIN CLUB KICKS OFF FOR SUMMER.

History, art, mathematics and language all come together in the hobby of coin collecting.

The pursuit of collecting is hardly new. The rst Roman emperor, Caesar Augustus, was said to have collected coins from around the world, which explains why coin collecting is sometimes referred to as the hobby of royalty.

Whether you call yourself a coin collector or an enthusiast, the common term for someone who collects currency, including coins, is a numismatist.

Ocala business 14 Karat Gold Jewelry & Coin is o ering a Kids Coin Club this summer for youth interested in starting or expanding

their collections. Kids Coin Club starts June 14 and runs through August 2.

Owners Robin and Sally Tripp have lived in Ocala since 2020. After several years of commuting to manage a coin shop in Palatka, they were excited to open 14 Karat Gold Jewelry & Coin in Ocala in October 2024.

“Most other stores have a limited inventory compared to what we have. We have thousands of coins, including our collection of world coins, graded, uncirculated and raw, 2 and 3 cent coins, half dimes, silver and gold. We have a treasure box of coins from around the world, including ancient and shipwreck coins,” says Robin,

adding that the shop also carries a selection of jewelry.

Having had successful coin clubs for youth in the past, the Tripps are again o ering one this summer.

“We encourage them to collect something feasible such as Je erson nickels, Eisenhower dollars, Kennedy half dollars or modern pennies from 1959 on,” says Robin.

Each child receives a collectible coin book to get started. Then they stop by the shop every Saturday, anytime between 10am and 3pm.

We encourage them to collect something feasible such as Jefferson nickels, Eisenhower dollars, Kennedy half dollars or modern pennies from 1959 on.

Robin Tripp

Owner 14 Karat Gold Jewelery & Coin

“They show how they’ve been working on their collection, and we give them a free coin, which could be an Indian head penny, a bu alo head nickel (which hasn’t been made since 1938) or a coin needed for their collection,” says Robin.

“When the club ends for the summer, each participant gets a certi cate of completion as a junior numismatist,” says Robin, who hopes that the club inspires kids to become lifetime collectors.

Children of all ages are welcome, but most participants are in the 10 to 16 age range. It’s a great opportunity for kids to pursue a hobby that doesn’t include a screen or a device.

OCEAN ADVENTURES

When people hear the word shark they typically run (or swim) the other way. But for Bryce Rohrer, a captain, dive guide and professional shark diver, the word shark means his day is about to get exciting.

Bryce has spent decades on the water diving with sharks, so there’s no doubt he has many exciting tales to tell.

“When you spend years on the ocean you see and experience a lot of incredible events,” he says. “Some that stand out would be an 18-foot great white shark eating a dead whale in my home waters o Nantucket Island and diving with a huge pod of oceanic killer whales in a remote part of the Bahamas and many dives with multiple tiger and great hammerhead sharks.”

At Florida Shark Diving, which has free and cage diving opportunities from Jupiter to Palm Beach and Miami to the Keys, Bryce takes adventure seekers out on the water to come face to

face with some of nature’s most misunderstood creatures. The adventures take place about three miles o shore in the Gulf Stream waters where visibility ranges from 40 to 100 feet. The team will tailor the dive needs to the group, up to six people. There’s also an opportunity for shark-viewing trips where participants stay in the boat.

“Many of our guests are surprised at how close the sharks get to them and that they don’t show any aggression,” says Bryce. “Even though many of the sharks we see on our dives are the most

notorious species, when you dive with us you see quickly that they are not aggressive towards humans.

“A sense of calm takes over once you’re actually in the water sharing space with the animal,” Bryce continues. “Most people tend to think this is more of an adrenaline rush type of activity like skydiving, but I’ve seen for myself and in the thousands of people I’ve taken diving it’s actually a more calming and re ective observation type of activity. At Florida Shark Diving we are lucky to be able to see a large amount and variety of sharks, including many premier species like tiger, great hammerhead, bull, dusky, silky, lemon, sandbar, blacktip and reef sharks to name a few.”

Bryce says that it’s a safe environment and they can accommodate anyone from rst timers to pros. For newbies, the cage is lowered into the water and divers can enter and exit the cage as much as they like during the excursion. Rest assured divers are safe and secure in the cage—it’s

FLYING HIGH

If you’ve ever dreamed of ying like Iron Man, this is your chance. Flyboard Surf Club Tampa serves the Tampa to Clearwater area, providing participants with a memorable, thrilling experience.

all about providing a responsible encounter for both the divers and the sharks.

“Sharks are an apex predator and need to be respected as such,” Bryce says. “We have designed our dives to do this by making sure the guests are organized and watched closely by our dive guides. Everything about our charters is planned to give our guests maximum enjoyment while respecting the sharks and their space.”

No SCUBA certi cation is required for shark dives. The trip usually lasts about three hours, and Florida Shark Diving provides all the necessary gear.

“We believe this is a great opportunity and experience for the public to be able to see such an iconic animal in the wild,” Bryce says, “not in a zoo or on a TV screen but up close and personal. Whether you’re a seasoned diver or novice snorkeler, we can bring you up close with the sharks for an incredible adventure.”

Check out oridasharkdiving.com for all the details.

Flyboard Surf Club is a familyowned and -operated business with more than 10 years of watersports experience. Your adventure- lled day starts with a crash course in yboarding, including how to operate and balance the board. According to the company’s website, it takes on average about 15-20 minutes to get the hang of controlled ying. Those with experience in other balance-related sports, think snowboarding or skateboarding, tend to grasp the sport in a matter of minutes. Flyboarding is something most people can try, but it’s recommended participants be at least 100 pounds and 8 years old. The maximum weight allowed is 300 pounds.

The rider is secured into the yboard, which features two downward pointing nozzles that expel high pressure water, propelling the rider into the air. Don’t get discouraged if you fall a few times on your initial ight; it’s to be expected. But rest assured that you will remain safe during the duration of your ride. The board’s power source is a 155-horsepower jet ski that has 100 percent of its thrust redirected into the hose that connects to the board. The thrust itself it controlled by the instructor to ensure rider safety. If the rider gets too close to other watercraft or ies to close to the land, the instructor will gently lower the rider back into the water. Of course, on the other hand, if riders take to the sport quickly, trips and ips are all fair game. Once the yboard is mastered, you can upgrade to a hoverboard, which is known to be a bit more challenging.

TONS OF FUN

Short of enlisting in the military, the chances of coming in contact with, much less driving, a massive tank is unlikely, right? Wrong! Tank America in Orlando, o Colonial Drive, gives adventure seekers the opportunity to do just that.

“Drivers will handle 17 tons of armored steel,” says Co-owner John Kinney. “Along the course there are hills, turns, ditches, and, depending on the course, even cars to run over.”

It was John’s friend, Troy Lotane, who originally came up with the idea for Tank America.

“He called me one day and said ‘Hey, did you know you could buy tanks?’ I said, ‘No, I didn’t know that, but you have my interest.’”

Troy is a former Navy man, and John also acknowledges that many of the sta members are military, representing the Marines and the Army, and they serve as instructors and mechanics who work on the tanks.

So idea in hand, the duo purchased British tanks (U.S. military equipment isn’t sold on the open market) and set out to build their course from the ground up. Originally, Tank America opened in Melbourne in 2017 and

operated until the move to their current location in Orlando in 2022, which spans 14 acres.

Once you arrive at the facility, participants go through a 30-minute operator brie ng where they learn to drive and operate the tanks. Tank America currently has nine tanks and uses the FV433 Abbot with a 105mm Howitzer cannon, along with an armored personnel carrier for car crushing.

“Most of the vehicles were already here in the States, but two we imported,” says John. “In a word, this experience is exhilarating. The driver’s compartment is on the deck of the tank, and the passengers are in the turret, about 9 feet o the ground.”

No license is required to drive a tank, but drivers must be at least 16 years old and passengers at least 55 inches tall. Reservations are required, so make sure to sign up ahead of time.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” says John. “Come and check this item o your bucket list. I have never seen anyone come o the tank without a huge smile on their face.”

Visit tankamerica.com for details and to reserve your space.

SCREAMIN’ GOOD TIME

You’re strapped in and your seat slowly reclines back. Your tension builds as the seconds tick by. Suddenly, you’re catapulted more than 360 feet into the air, going from zero to 100 miles per hour in a matter of seconds. As your mind tries to catch up to what your body is experiencing, you have already reached the top and have started to freefall back toward the ground. Before reaching the ground, the spring machine engages once more, sending you back into the air. Your body will experience 6 Gs of force and leave you completely exhilarated.

Lots of cities around Florida have a Slingshot attraction, but we love the one in Daytona Beach located at Screamer’s Park because, well, the beach is right there. If you can keep your eyes open and look around during the ride, you’ll get a great view of the Atlantic Ocean. Also at Screamer’s Park is the Vomatron, and perhaps the name says it all. A huge 165foot metal arm features two seats at each end. The motors slowly start up, rotating the arm as the capsules start to spin. And as you think the ride is coming to an end, the Vomatron rotates riders backward with the same speed and intensity. The 5 Gs felt by riders is likened to the rigorous training astronauts undergo before traveling to space.

Screamer’s Park is located on South Atlantic Avenue and is open from 9:30am until midnight. Various single ride and package tickets are available, including photos and videos of your experience. There is no set age limit to ride the Slingshot, but riders do have to be a minimum of 50 inches tall and be able to t in the seat safely with the straps fastened securely. After your ride, head to Screamer’s Bar for a much-deserved drink. Options include beer, wine, shots and soft drinks for the youngest adrenaline seekers.

Visit slingshotdaytonabeach.com for more information.

JET CAR

You’ve probably been on a Jet Ski. But a jet car? We would bet not. Imagine cruising through the open waters of the Gulf in an exotic car, except this is no ordinary exotic car—this fabricated car shell is powered by powerful Jet Ski components, allowing you to ride the waves and glide across the water’s surface, all from the comfort of your exotic two-seater. Cars include Corvettes, Lamborghinis and McLarens. If you really want to impress, the Rolls Royce, a fourseater, is the way to go.

Exotic Jetcar began three seasons ago when co-owners Vaughn Pitts and Mark Swa ord rst saw a jetcar in Dubai.

“It was so unique that we had to gure out a way to bring it to the United States,” says Vaughn. “And we were actually the rst company to bring jetcars to the U.S. We promise you a fun, amazing time. When the water is at it’s just a nice, enjoyable ride. When the water is wavy, it feels like you’re on a ride at a water park, and you can expect to get very wet.”

To rent one of these thrilling jetcars, you must be at least 18. And to operate a motorboat of 10 horsepower or more, drivers must complete an approved boating safety course and obtain a Boating Safety Education Identi cation Card issued by the FWC. The course should be completed ahead of time and the cost is $10.

Upon arrival at Exotic JetCars, the rules and safety guidelines are covered, and then you’ll have anywhere from 30 minutes to multiple hours to explore the open waters o Tampa Bay. There are multiple ride zones extending

between the Gulf of Mexico and the Intracoastal Waterway, and they even o er a photo and video package to capture the fun for just $50.
