A MER-MAZING SCAVENGER HUNT
VISIT MERMAIDS WITHOUT GETTING YOUR FEET WET.
WRITTEN BY CYNTHIA MCFARLAND
For thousands of years, intriguing tales have been told of mythological sea creatures who are part woman, part sh. But one doesn’t have to venture back in history to come face to face with mermaids. You need only drive to Hernando County.
These magical sirens have been linked to Central Florida ever since Weeki Wachee Springs State Park debuted its legendary mermaid shows in 1947.
The mermaid shows are ongoing, and the park still utilizes the underwater breathing technology invented by Newt Perry, who, with his wife, Dot, taught thousands to swim at Perry Swim School in Ocala.
In honor of Weeki Wachee’s 75th anniversary in 2022, Florida’s Adventure Coast Visitors
Bureau unveiled the Mermaid Tale Trail composed of 26 mermaid statues located throughout Hernando County. Ten more mermaids were unveiled at the end of March 2025. There’s even a mermaid statue greeting guests in the welcome center at the FloridaGeorgia border.
“Hopefully, we’ll keep adding to it and get to 100,” says John Athanason, multimedia communications specialist at Florida’s Adventure Coast Visitors Bureau.
Binda, Neri, Chalsie, Aria, Maritza, Lyndal, and more—each 6-foot-tall mermaid is named. A real Weeki Wachee mermaid was used for the plaster face mold to make the statues. Reminiscent of the Horse Fever statues in Ocala, each mermaid is hand-painted by a di erent
Discovering the mermaids is a fun adventure, as they are scattered throughout Hernando County, so you’ll need a vehicle for this one. Access the Mermaid Tale Trail Passport on your phone via text or email to reveal the recommended path to nd each statue.
“It’s like a scavenger hunt,” says John. “You follow the clues and accrue points to win prizes as you visit each mermaid.”
Participants are encouraged to take photos with the mermaids and share them using #TheMermaidTaleTrail, so your photo may be featured on the Florida’s Adventure Coast Visitors Bureau website and social media channels.
If you’d rather hunt for mermaids on foot, take a walking tour. The Florida Mermaid Trail in Brooksville features 21 bronze mermaids that can be found in the historic town, including some in unexpected locations, as these aren’t life-size mermaids.
Get started by picking up a paper map at the Brooksville Welcome Center of Florida’s Adventure Coast Visitors Bureau.
“The walking trail is primarily in historic downtown Brooksville,” says John. “There’s a short (1.1 mile) trail and a longer (2.2 mile) trail, depending on how long you want to walk.”
Whether you take one or both tours, you’re bound to capture the magic of Florida’s mermaids.

75 YEARS OF STORYTELLING
OCALA CIVIC THEATRE
ACHIEVES LANDMARK YEAR… AND LOOKS TOWARD ITS FUTURE.
WRITTEN BY CYNTHIA MCFARLAND
Abeloved city landmark, the Ocala Civic Theatre celebrated its 75th anniversary on March 3, 2025. Now recognized as one of the top 20 community theatres in the country, OCT has entertained, inspired and enlightened since 1950.
Initially known as The Marion Players, there was no exclusive home for the theatre in its early years. Meetings, rehearsals and performances were held in di erent locations around town, from the Hotel Ocala and the old Armory building to the former Ocala High School (now Osceola Middle School) and even an old bakery.
In 1953, the Marion Players found a permanent home after buying the Osborne Theatre east of town on Silver Springs Boulevard. The former magician’s showplace was home to the theatre for over three decades.
The Marion Players o cially became the Ocala Civic Theatre in 1970 but continued to hold performances in the old Osborne Theatre until the late 1980s.
In desperate need of more space, OCT was granted a long-term lease from the City of Ocala on a 28-acre parcel of land in the Appleton Cultural Center, across the road from their original theatre location.
OCT built their current $1.4 million facility, which opened in October 1988, and it has been home to the theatre ever since. Having grown into one of the largest community theatres in the Southeast, OCT has become a favorite cultural destination for residents of Ocala and beyond.
YOUTH ARTS PROGRAMS
Educational youth theatre programs play a vital role at OCT, which is a not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) organization and mostly volunteerbased, with a small staff.
“We teach all year long and have classes ongoing for children and adults. We reach about 400 students a season on average,” says Executive and Artistic Director Greg Thompson, who created the Arts for All
summer youth program in 1991.
Both educational and inspiring, the program is for young people aged 9-17. Arts for All classes are held eight hours a day Monday through Thursday starting Monday, June 9 and continuing through Sunday, July 20.
“This summer, they’ll be performing two productions,” says Greg, who has worn many hats at OCT, including director, choreographer and instructor.
Those youth productions include the play Property Rites , which will be performed July 11-13, and the musical Beetlejuice Jr. , July 18-20.
Registration for Arts for All is now open and already filling up, so don’t delay if you have a young person who is interested in participating. The program is limited to 60 students per summer.
Younger kids are also included in the arts education program. Arts for All Too is

for children ages 6 to 8 and takes place on Saturdays for four hours, starting June 14 and concluding July 19.
SAVE THE CIVIC
Having been in their current building for close to 40 years, OCT recently launched “Save the Civic,” a fundraising e ort to ensure that the theatre can continue to impact and entertain the community for many years to come.
OCT has had successful fundraising
campaigns in the past to build and expand as the theatre grew and hopes to do so again with its “Save the Civic” mission.
“The fundraising is to sustain our existence and to continue the work making sure this building can be here for everyone,” says Greg. “We’re in a 40-year-old building and spent $1.3 million in the last four years on delayed maintenance.”
He points out that a study by Americans for the Arts shows that “every dollar spent on the arts in Marion County generates $9, bene ting local businesses through increased spending and the attraction of dollars.”
Mainstage productions for the 2025-2026 season include:
SEPTEMBER 11-28
INTO THE WOODS (MUSICAL)
OCTOBER 30-NOVEMBER 16
THE CRUCIBLE (PLAY)
DECEMBER 3-14
A TUNA CHRISTMAS (PLAY)
JANUARY 29-FEBRUARY 15
LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS (MUSICAL)
MARCH 12-29
STEEL MAGNOLIAS (PLAY)
APRIL 30-MAY 17
CHILDREN OF EDEN (MUSICAL)
“We did A Tuna Christmas for the rst time last year, and people loved it,” says Greg of the popular Christmas comedy. “We’re hoping it could become an annual tradition.”
The arts and cultural industry in Ocala/ Marion County does more than simply entertain. It supports 800 full-time and part-time jobs and generates $21.2 million in resident household income.
UPCOMING SEASON
“We’ve settled into a six-show season for many years, which usually features three musicals and three non-musical productions,” says Greg. “We had 298 performances and events in the 20232024 season.”
Season tickets just went on sale April 14 and o er an interactive way to support the fundraiser, whether you’re a long-time season ticket holder or new to the theatre.
OCT has also planned an inaugural gala fundraiser to be held on October 3, 2025.

ADVENTURE OF THE UNKNOWN
UNBOXING THE TREND OF LOCAL BUSINESS FUNDELIVERED.
WRITTEN BY CYNTHIA MCFARLAND
Anticipation. Mystery. Curiosity. Combine those intangibles and you’ll begin to understand what’s behind FunDelivered, the full- edged social media craze that launched here in Ocala.
When the pandemic struck, Rebecca Dallman and Jena Butler had a busy commercial cleaning business with 27 sta members. During that stressful time, they came across a liquidation site selling a pallet of 500 pieces of unclaimed mail and bought it.
“We had no idea what we were buying or if it would pay o ,” recalls Rebecca. “It was the adventure of the unknown.”
“We opened the majority of the packages but had 35 to 50 left. We had a yard sale, and a guy o ered to buy them. That sparked the idea of continuing this, and we went online to nd more pallets,” she says.
They started listing these “mystery packages” as FunDelivered and selling them through Facebook Marketplace as a simple way for people to have fun and connect. That was in April 2021. Rebecca and Jena decided if the trend lasted through Christmas, they needed to legitimize it as a business.
From the beginning, they encouraged people
to share their unboxing videos online and tag them. This got people engaging, including in uencers who order from FunDelivered and post the content on their pages.
FunDelivered buys unopened packages in bulk from third-party liquidators—not from the U.S. Postal Service or any mail delivery services. These are items from online retailers whose packages were either returned or never successfully delivered.
The packages are then boxed and sold by FunDelivered as a “double-blind mystery” since the content is unknown. Basically, if it’s sold online, it could be in one of their boxes.
Each FunDelivered box contains numerous pieces. The smallest option is the Tiny Box
for $40, which contains seven to eight tiny packages. The most expensive option is the Party Box at $210, which contains 20 to 22 packages.
“The a rmation we needed was in December 2024 when The Wall Street Journal highlighted FunDelivered as a great gift idea,” says Rebecca. “This really gave us momentum.”
During the holiday season, they sold out in minutes.
FunDelivered currently ships out an average of 1,000 boxes a week. What started in a garage has grown to two warehouses in Ocala with a “small, but mighty” all-women team.
“We never thought it would get this big,” says Jena. “Two years ago, we sold our cleaning business to focus on this. We didn’t see the full picture until about two years in. Now we’re on track to do about $5 million in sales this year.”

AN EPICALLY GOOD TIME
THEMEPARK LOVERS, REJOICE! THE MUCH-ANTICIPATED OPENING OF UNIVERSAL’S NEWEST THEME PARK, EPIC UNIVERSE, IS MAY 22.
WRITTEN BY KARIN FABRY-CUSHENBERY
Visitors to Epic Universe will nd themselves immersed in ve interactive and exquisitely designed worlds, including The Wizarding World of Harry Potter—The Ministry of Magic, Super Nintendo World, the Dark Universe, How to Train Your Dragon—Isle of Berk and Celestial Park.
Harry Potter lovers know that the wizarding world is lled with hidden pathways, magical spaces and dangerous (and sometimes loveable) creatures. Visit the magical streets of 1920s Paris from the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them movie franchise and the 1990s British Ministry of Magic from the Harry Potter movies.
As you explore Paris, (complete with Parisian shops and cafes) practice your spell-casting skills with interactive wand experiences, enchanted objects and fantastic beasts throughout the streets. Le Cirque Arcanus combines live cirque performers, aerial stunts, special e ects and advanced puppetry to bring the fantastical beasts and their stories to life.
A trip through the Metro Floo (or giant replaces in Muggle terms) transfers guests into the 1990s Ministry of Magic, a full-on multi-sensory experience. Aboard Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry, riders join their favorite Harry Potter friends at the Ministry where Dolores Umbridge is about to stand trial for her crimes against the wizarding world. Until she escapes that is. This thrill/motion simulation ride takes you into the
depths of the Ministry of Magic where, along the way, you’ll meet friends and enemies alike. And, as any true Universal fan will tell you, the queue to the ride is just as important as the ride itself, and Epic Universe doesn’t disappoint.
From the dark streets of the Ministry to the bright streets of the Super Nintendo World, this world is sure to impress the kiddos… and your inner child, too! Super Mario Land and Donkey Kong Country boast three rides, plenty of fun restaurants, stores and character experiences. Make it even more interactive with your PowerUp Band, which allows guests to win keys by participating in interactive activities, collect digital coins and stamps, track your score and rank yourself amongst other park visitors. Check out Mine-Cart Madness, a family coaster that takes
iconic locations as Gobber’s Forge, Hiccup’s House and the dragon racing bleachers.
The Isle of Berk features ve attractions, plus meet and greets with some of your favorite characters. Hiccup’s Wing Glider is a soaring coaster that gives guests an aerial view of Berk. Dragon Racer’s Rally is a rst-of-its-kind, high ying ride at Universal and is based on the best and worst dragon racers from the lms. Viking Training Camp is a multi-sensory, interactive play area for the little ones, and Fyre Drill will take riders on a trip with Ru nut and Tu nut as they nd themselves in a boat battle where teams of Vikings compete to outsoak and outscore each other, all while trying to hit 130 moving targets found throughout the attraction.

Save this ride for after dark to get the true experience! Nearby you’ll nd Constellation Carousel, a merry-go-round like no other. The carriages include celestial dragons, peacocks, lions and more, and each carriage turns 360 degrees while lifting the rider up six feet and back down again. The music and vibrant colors only enhance your trip across the Milky Way on this fun family-friendly ride.

If you’re a Nintendo and Mario Kart fan, the Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge ride will be right up your alley. Explore some of the most iconic Mario Kart courses alongside your favorite characters.
The Isle of Berk from How to Train Your Dragon is designed after an eighth century Viking village, complete with rocky cli s and soaring mountains, perched high above the sea. The world itself, the largest in the Universe, is a sensory masterpiece showcasing Viking-size features, like 9-foot-tall doors, handmade benches carved by chainsaw, woven tapestries and six real-timber buildings. There are even several re-breathing dragons found throughout the world, which includes such
Dark Universe is just that, a dark world where some of most iconic and classic monsters— think Frankenstein and Dracula—roam the streets. Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment showcases Victoria Frankenstein, Henry’s great-great granddaughter, who invites guests to witness her latest experiment, an attempt to tame one of the most dangerous monsters, Dracula. Amidst the chaos, the rest of the monsters escape, including the Creature from the Black Lagoon, the Wolf Man, the Mummy and more. Also check out Curse of the Wolfman, a family spinning coaster found in the Guild of Mystics. If your little one has a monster streak in them, head to the Darkmoor Monster Makeup Experience where they can unleash their inner monster.
The fth world at Epic Universe, Celestial Park, features the Stardust Racers, a dual-launch coaster reaching speeds of 62mph and heights of 133 feet. Stardust Racers was built as if the residents of Celestial Park have harnessed the energy of the comets as they ride them across
Make your plans early to visit the new Epic Universe, and remember to bring your patience with you since the theme park is sure to be crowded in the early months of operation. It’s going to be epic!

Whether you’re looking f a low-key, adults-only res t in a tropical se ing a family cruise full of watersp ts and beach destinations (and plenty of adult fun options as well), these easy land and sea itineraries can make your summer vacation a literal and figurative breeze.
Wri en By Meli a Peterson
What’s your ideal vacation look like?
Plenty of downtime with just you and a special someone? Fine dining and dancing on the beach to a vibrant Bahamian band afterward? Or do you prefer to include the whole family and want plenty of adventurous activities to keep the kiddos busy from sun up until bedtime? Either of these vacations sound like a win to us!
So now the planning begins—and we’re here to help. We’ve sorted through hundreds of hotels and cruise lines to nd the best options (in our humble opinion!) for both an adult-only or family-friendly getaway. All these vacations are either located in Florida, originate from a Florida port or can be accessed by a quick nonstop ight to a nearby Bahamian airport. From here, all that’s left to do is ask yourself one question: How will you vacay this summer?
by Land
A breezy shoreline, turquoise water, a tropical drink in your hand, the kids splashing in the gentle waves a few steps away (or not, if you prefer)—there’s nothing better than a summer beach vacation. No matter if you’re looking for an action-packed family getaway where we promise no one will be bored or an all-inclusive, adults-only luxury resort in the Florida Keys, these two getaway options are waiting for you this summer.
Margaritaville Beach Resort Nassau
Located in the heart of Nassau, in the Bahamas, with an amazing view of the cruise ship port, Margaritaville Beach Resort is popular among families—and for good reason. A tropical paradise, Nassau is known for its crystal-clear waters and, fortunately for us Floridians, it’s a short non-stop ight away from any of the major airports in Central Florida. Or if you’re feeling adventurous, hop on a scenic seaplane to make the trip. The views are spectacular!
The resort o ers accommodations for a variety of di erent group sizes, from modern traditional guest rooms to spacious suites and luxury residences. Beautifully appointed oceanfront accommodations o er unobstructed views of the calming Caribbean waters.
Once you’re settled, the soothing spa, water park, world-class eateries and guestrst amenities provide endless opportunities to help you ease into a tropical state of mind. Afterward, head to historic Bay Street and indulge in local favorites from the Straw Market,
Arawak Cay or “Fish Fry” to Junkanoo Beach and more all within easy walking distance. Explore all the o erings and get a taste of the island attitude.
If you’re traveling with kiddos who need more than the beach to stay busy, you’ll want to schedule time to visit the Fins Up Water Park, FlowRider® Surf Simulator, Parakeets Kid’s Club and Icons Sports Bar and Entertainment Center high-tech entertainment complex, which features virtual-reality sports, karaoke, bowling, billiards and a private movie theater. At the water park you’ll nd four water slides, a 10-food jump platform plunging into an 11.5-foot-deep pool, a lazy river, a zero-entry pool, the FlowRider boogie board simulator and rock-climbing wall. Beach water sports equipment, like kayaks and stand-up paddle boards, are also available. You can purchase a cabana for your pool day, and the 12 Volt bar inside the water park and Feeding Frenzy outdoor restaurant are available when lunchtime comes along.
When you need some adult-time, the Parakeets Kid’s Club o ers pool and beach
games, arts and crafts, and other daily activities with a sta of trained counselors for kids ages 5 to 9. The club comes with an extra charge, and reservations are required.
While the kids are having fun, venture over to the St. Somewhere Spa. You’ll enjoy a tranquil, tropical setting complete with beautiful facilities and welcoming sta . Inspired by the sun, sand and sea, the massage experiences, skin therapies and beauty treatments are sure to bring out your best self.
Or maybe you want to spend your adult time enjoying an upscale dinner. For that, you’ll want to visit JWB Prime Steak and Seafood. This oceanside steak and seafood restaurant, named after Jimmy Bu ett himself, elevates traditional surf and turf with beautiful selections and settings to match. When the kids are with you, there are plenty of kid-friendly dining options as well, from cafes with burgers, chicken tenders and pizza to a grab-and-go market and an ice cream parlor.

TACO THE TOWN
THESE TRADITIONAL MOM-AND-POP TAQUERIAS ARE THE PERFECT SOLUTION TO YOUR DINNERTIME BLUES.
WRITTEN AND PHOTOGRAPHED BY JOHNNY MCEARCHERN
If you’re one whose taco cravings can be su ced with a casual Tuesday meal consisting of bright yellow crunchy shells over owing with shredded iceberg lettuce, this piece might not be your bowl of salsa. If you need a daily dose of warm, soft corn tortillas heaping with avorful meats, fresh-cut onions and cilantro, dripping down to your elbows, you’re in the right place. This month we dive into a diverse and delicious tour of the 352’s impressive taqueria scene, plus some hidden gems along the way.
While traditional Mexican and Tex Mex restaurants have been popular for a long time,
the taqueria has been hiding in plain sight. The word “taqueria” literally breaks down to “taco place of business,” and that’s certainly my kinda place. Taquerias are often nestled right inside of Hispanic grocery stores, food trucks or trailers parked along busy intersections or even pulled right into bustling job sites in the back of a lunch truck. Each of these versions is known to produce some of the best utensil-free food you’ll nd this side of the Rio Grande. With a cross culture so engrained in our everyday lives, it’s no wonder we’re fortunate to have so many incredible options right in our favorite area code.
Before you get too deep into our breakdown of some of Ocala’s best taquerias make sure you’ve already eaten lunch or get up now and grab a snack—you’d be surprised how powerful the pull of carne asada or lengua can be when wrapped in a fresh tortilla and served hot. Whether you’re looking for a sit-down option, a hole in the wall or a taco truck near your favorite route, we’ve got you covered, and we’ll have you craving tacos in no time.
TACO N MADRE
80 N PINE AVE, OCALA
Located in the heart of Ocala at one of the busiest
intersections in the city sits Taco N Madre. A familiar sight and longtime xture right at Pine and Silver Springs Boulevard, this is as true a taqueria as it gets. The signature dish, The King Burrito, is certainly worthy of the crown. Not only is it huge, but the avor is undeniably royal as well. While chips and salsa might be extra, paired with an ice cold Modelo, they’re worth it every time. Opening daily from 10am-10pm ensures you can always get your x no matter the time or day.
TAQUERIA LUPE
7165 SE MARICAMP RD, OCALA
If you’ve seen the bright green taco trailer on Maricamp in Silver Springs Shores and you haven’t stopped yet, you might next time. Taqueria Lupe is a local favorite for those in The Shores and many folks passing through. Chorizo and Al Pastor are popular choices and pair well with an authentic Horchata anytime. Lupe is open Tuesday through Saturday from noon-8:30pm, so be careful not to plan an after-church taco run.
PEPE’S MEXICAN RESTAURANT AND STORE
7915 SR 50, OCALA
Situated just before the last light on the way
into the World Equestrian Center, Pepe’s is a true Tienda Mexicana, o ering not only an excellent taqueria but also a bakery, butcher and supermarket all in one spot. After browsing the supermarket and smelling all the incredible treats as you walk past the baked goods, it’s time to grab a Steak Quesadilla Gigante and a fresh, made-in-house Agua Frescsa. Pair that quesadilla with arguably the best chips and guacamole anywhere and you’ve easily got lunch for two covered. You can take the an to-go and do dessert when you get home. Breakfast is always an option, too, with hours that run from 7am-8:30pm or 7am-9:30pm on weekends.
VIVA MEXICO TAQUERIA
17615 US 301, SUMMERFIELD
Viva is another former mobile option that has taken up semi-permanent shop along 301 in the south end of Summer eld. A wide array of menu options and consistent execution of those options has made Viva a must-do for locals and Villages residents alike as they expand their territory looking for the best taco options—even if they have to go outside the gates to get it. The totopos are a great spin on
an unexpected classic. During soccer season, you can grab your meal to go and attend an open practice at the Brave FC facility just down 301 from Viva Mexico. They’re open Monday through Saturday from 9am-8pm.
TAQUERIA SANTA LUCÍA
201 US 441, LADY LAKE
While a little further away from Ocala than the other options, Taqueria Santa Lucia is still well within the 352 and a growing favorite in the south end of the area code. After the last batch of hurricanes that came through left many in the area without power, the generators were up and running early for folks trying to find breakfast. And the line at Santa Lucia hasn’t really slowed down since. The menu is robust and features many favorites for taqueria fans, but the Birria-Dilla is an absolute must. The fusion of Birria Taco and Quesadilla is perfection in a styrofoam box with enough food to feed you a few times. The sizzle of an ice-cold, glass bottle CocaCola sets the flavor off and satisfies even the weariest of patrons. Taqueria Santa Lucía is open seven days a week from 8am until at least 7pm with extended weekend hours.
Whether headed home from a day on the lake, on your way to watch your favorite youth sports team or just looking for dinner after a long day at work, the bustling and diverse world of our local taqueria scene rarely disappoints. Choosing only a few to highlight was the most difficult part of this piece. (The research and testing were a different story, though!) Next time you see that familiar food truck or happen to notice a spot open up near your normal routes, head in and grab an authentic meal from your neighbors that is sure to deliver a satisfying and delicious reminder of the many reasons we’re so fortunate to call this place home.
Happy Mother’s Day! Head to El Toreo for the best Mexican food this side of the border! Enjoy all of your favorite traditional Mexican dishes in a friendly and festive atmosphere. Beyond the outstanding Mexican food, El Toreo simply o ers a warm, fun place to be—whether you’re dressed up or casual. SAY TACO GRAND OPENING CELEBRATION
MAY 5
Sayulita Taqueria located in historic downtown Ocala is under new ownership, and the newly coined Say Taco Tequila Bar & Grill is a modern restaurant, a hip bar and a destination perfect for socializing with friends and family. It’s tting that this authentic Mexican restaurant would hold its grand opening on Cinco de Mayo, May 5. From 6-10pm guests will enjoy live music by Propaganjah. When visiting, start with the house-made guacamole and chips. From there, you really can’t go wrong. The tacos are to die for, and with more than a dozen varieties to choose from, there’s certainly something for every taste. We are intrigued by the Brisket Taco, which features cheese, bourbon pickles, crema and crispy onions, plus the Dirty Dog, which, believe it or not, includes seared angus beef hot dogs, queso, lettuce, crema and salsa. Of course, you can never go wrong with the basic 101 taco, either. Also on the menu is a great selection of salads and bowls, quesadillas, burritos and more.
