HONORING HISTORY THROUGH MUSIC

CELEBRATE HISTORY, COMMUNITY AND MUSIC AT FORT MOSE HISTORIC STATE PARK.

Blending rich history with the vibrant sounds of jazz and blues on historic grounds, the Fort Mose Jazz & Blues Series returns for its fth year to Fort Mose Historic State Park in St. Augustine February 6-15. More than a concert series, the Fort Mose Jazz & Blues Series honors Fort Mose’s profound legacy as the rst legally sanctioned free African settlement in what is now the United States, o ering audiences an immersive experience where history, community and music converge.

The fth annual series will welcome Grammy Award- winning artists Gary Clark Jr., Don Was and

to bring awareness to the Fort Mose story. A portion of proceeds from ticket sales are donated to the Fort Mose Historical Society to aid in their ongoing preservation and educational e orts.”

As the site of the rst legally sanctioned free African settlement, in 1738, an estimated 100 Africans made Fort Mose their home and sanctuary in seeking liberation from English enslavement amidst a large-scale power struggle between European powers in the New World. Pulling from Native American, Spanish and English cultural customs, the founding residents of Fort Mose

the Pan-Detroit Ensemble, Samara Joy, Robert Cray Band, Ruthie Foster and Ledisi.

“Fort Mose Jazz & Blues Series launched in February 2022 and has featured icons of jazz and blues,” says Dianya Markovits, director of public relations and partnerships for SJC Cultural Events, Inc. “The concept, developed by SJC Cultural Events, Inc (the 501(c)(3)) nonpro t organization that also operates The St. Augustine Amphitheatre) and the Fort Mose Historical Society, is to create an immersive jazz and blues series, genres with deep historical roots, on the grounds of the historic state park

created a new cultural community. In 1994, Fort Mose was designated as a Historic National Landmark.

“The history of the park is re ected in the series through its immersive setting,” says Dianya. “Attendees are surrounded by Fort Mose Historic State Park’s history the moment they arrive at the site, from the towering fort reconstruction to the Fort Mose Historical Society reenactors who greet attendees, to the interpretive signage and museum providing historical and educational context.”

Attendees to the series can expect to see ve nights of master jazz and blues artists perform on one stage, under the stars, among

the centuries-old oak trees and newly reconstructed 1738 Fort Mose. The stage and seating are located to the south of the fort, creating a fully immersive and unique concert experience. The concerts are seated, with reserved seating available for purchase. Restroom facilities are available on-site, and a variety of local food trucks will be on-site for food purchases, as well as a full bar featuring both non-alcoholic and alcoholic options for purchase.

“We choose artists with two goals in mind: honoring the cultural signi cance of Fort Mose and creating a powerful experience for audiences,” says Dianya.

“That means booking artists with deep musical credibility—icons and emerging voices—who bring authenticity, artistry and connection. We also shape the lineup so each night feels distinct while still tting the overall identity of the series.

“Jazz and blues were chosen because they’re foundational American art forms rooted in Black history—music born from resilience, community and storytelling,” continues Dianya. “Presenting these genres at Fort Mose is especially meaningful because this site represents an incredible story of

freedom. The music and the place reinforce each other: both carry cultural memory, both honor legacy, and both invite people to gather, re ect and celebrate.”

Tickets for the shows range between $50.31 to $212.16, depending on the performance and seat locations. Tickets for each performance are sold individually; there is not an option to purchase tickets for the entire series. VIP tickets are available.

“It’s important to create events that serve the community and respect the places that shape it,” says Dianya. “Fort Mose is a site of national signi cance, and bringing people to this park for an intentional experience—one that blends world-class music and heritage—helps keep its story visible. Our hope is that attendees enjoy an incredible night of music and also leave with a greater appreciation for Fort Mose and its legacy.”

The permanent collection of over 24,000 extraordinary works offers an encyclopedia of cultures and ideas from around the globe in nearly every artistic medium up through today. Currently on exhibit, Romantically Involved: Expressions of Love from the Permanent Collection draws from the Appleton Museum of Art’s collection of American and European artwork to offer a timeline of passion that spans from the 19th century through today. On view through June , Portraits in Passing: Contemporary Chinese Brush Painting by A.E. Kozeliski highlights the people of the street—those encountered in daily life yet often overlooked: the wanderers, the unhoused and the forgotten. Rather than traditional portraits, they capture a moment in time, revealing glimpses of humanity that might otherwise go unnoticed. appletonmuseum.org

A HAVEN FOR ANIMALS

THIS ANIMAL RANCH PROVIDES A SOFT LANDING SPOT FOR A VARIETY OF EXOTIC ANIMALS. BY

Candice and Scott Miller established Beautiful Creatures Animal Ranch in 2016, and today it provides a permanent home for more than 150 animal residents, including a large variety of mammals, reptiles and birds. Located in Dunnellon, the ranch is privately funded and o ers tours to the public, with each tour fee directly bene ting the care of the animals.

“We decided to open Beautiful Creatures Animal Ranch because we wanted to provide the community with the opportunity to meet and learn about all kinds of animals—from livestock to exotic animals—in an up-close, hands-on experience,” says Candice. “We also wanted to be able to provide a place where displaced animals could nd a permanent home.”

Some animals joined the ranch as babies and were raised to be animal ambassadors, giving our guests the opportunity to be up close with them. About 50 percent of the animals that reside here are rescues, and they will spend the rest of their days here on the farm.”

With so many unique and special animals on the ranch, it’s di cult to single out just a few of the favorites, but here are some guest favorites. Scooter—who loves bananas and nose rubs—is a camel who came to the ranch from a camel dairy in Colorado. Dolly the sloth loves sweet potatoes and taking sel es with guests. Kirah and Matty the ring tail lemurs were donated from a pet home, as was Charlie the macaw. They love bananas! Buttercup the capybara also loves bananas. Strings was once a wild donkey and was adopted by the ranch through the Bureau of Land Management.

“Each animal that lives at the ranch has its own story,” says Candice. “Many of the animals are rescues from facilities that have closed or are ex-pets from people who couldn’t keep them anymore.

Guests wanting to meet the animals have a variety of options. Ranch tours are available Friday through Monday at 10:30am and 2pm. Because all the tours are hands-on, tour size is limited. Tours can be scheduled on the ranch’s website. Three types of tours are o ered.

The Capybara & Company Hands-On Experience allows guests to step into a world of calm curiosity and unforgettable connections. At the heart of this unique adventure is meeting the incredible capybaras, the world’s largest rodent and nature’s most peaceful socialite. Spend quality time up close with these gentle, water-loving creatures as they wade, snack and

relax right beside you.

With the Sloth & Friends Experience guests will rst stop at the Sloth Shack to interact and learn about the ranch’s sloth residents. Feeding, petting and pictures are part of this experience. After the sloth encounter, guests will enjoy a onehour ranch tour meeting with the other animal ranch residents.

On the Animal Adventure Trek guests get the opportunity to adventure out on a one-mile hike with a llama, alpaca, donkey or miniature horse around the ranch. On your trek, you will meet some of the animals that live on the ranch and enjoy some upclose-and-personal time (think sel es!) with you animal hiking buddy. The tour also includes petting and feeding other animals, including deer, kangaroo, wallaby, porcupine, tortoises, chickens, ducks, mini-pigs, lemurs, emus, camel and more.

The ranch also o ers other special events, usually once per

month, including goat and llama yoga, sloth painting parties, a Mother’s Day trek, lunch with the llamas, trunk or treat with the animals, Grinch & Friends tours, a kids’ winter camp, and summer camps from June through August. The ranch also has a mobile unit that o ers petting farms, party llamas and beverage burros as well as the Wild About Animals educational program.

“We want all of our guests to appreciate the animals,” says Candice. “We want them to be able to experience interacting with them during a hands-on experience. We want them to be able to see them up close, smell them, look into their eyes and appreciate and respect them for who they are. We want people to leave here feeling like it was an animal experience like no other.”

High

octane

Get your motor running with a full lineup of high-intensity motorsport action.

If you’re craving a bit of adrenaline in your life, we have the perfect solution. From ATV trail rides and mudding to some of our state’s most anticipated upcoming races, we have some of our favorite adventure- lled activities to add to your calendar.

Hog Waller Campground and ATV Adventure Park

Fondly referred to as the 1,000acre woods by regulars, Hog Waller Campground and ATV Resort in Putnam County is a family adventure park designed just for ATVs. But that wasn’t always the case.

The current Hog Waller property in Palatka has been in siblings Kay Clapp and Skeet Alford’s family for generations.

“Back in 2007 the county approached us asking if we could open our land as a place for trucks to go and drive around,” says Kay. “They had issues with trucks being where they shouldn’t be. We agreed. We dug a mud bog for the trucks, and they showed up.”

Eventually the pair noticed more ATVs and four wheelers in the area, so an expansion was in order.

“We already owned the property, so we opened a new section up for trail rides and side by sides. We are now strictly an ATV park and full-time

campground,” Kay says. Hog Waller doesn’t, however, allow dirt bikes.

“We didn’t expect the park to be as big as it has gotten,” Kay adds. “It’s really taken o , and we nurture it. This was very much an instance of if you build it, they will come.”

Today the park is open just about every day of the year from 9am to 5pm and costs $25 per day for those 10 and over. For 14 weekends out of the year they host All-Hours Weekends, when Hog Waller opens on Friday and doesn’t close until 5pm on Sunday. During these weekends, the park is monitored by local deputies and EMS workers to keep the action as safe as possible.

“On a busy event weekend, you can expect loud music, family fun, camping and good old-fashioned mud bogging,” says Jagger Johnson, a frequent visitor to Hog Waller. “You will see everything from small ATVs to jacked-up buggies with custom paint jobs and chrome rims.” Jagger drives a 2024 Canam Defender Limited that sits on 46-inch tires and has an eightinch portal lift. It’s a hobby he’s

upgraded throughout the years.

The conditions at Hog Waller are often dependent on the weather and rainy season, but drivers and riders can expect a combination of sandy, packed and muddy terrains to explore.

“There’s a little bit of everything,” Kay says. “Some sites are very wet, and the regulars have nicknamed them the Gator and Tiger Holes. We have lots of pine, sand hills, open spaces, more trail-like riding and more. The park is surrounded by state-owned property, and riders can see deer, bears, racoons and other wildlife.”

“The trails are great for all riders,” Jagger says. “That’s what I really like about Hog Waller. You have the option to bring a stock machine through dry trails with nice scenery or pick the route of endless mud bottom. It’s fun for everybody. The Gator Hole is a popular mud hole in the back where many people give their best shot for getting across successfully without sinking their machine.”

Hog Waller promotes a familyfriendly atmosphere, and Kay says she sees people of all ages enjoying the trails. They leave the riding age up to the parents, but ages 15 and under are required to wear a helmet while riding.

“We encourage common sense rules,” Kay says. “No underage drinking, keeping the noise down after dark and a 5-mile-per-hour speed limit around the camping area are required.”

If you’re coming from a distance or just wish to make a weekend out of mudding or riding, the park o ers eight primitive cabins and 70 hookups for campers.

“The cabins are very primitive,” Kay says. “They have bunks but no mattresses, electric outlets, and heat and A/C. We call it glori ed camping; you bring your own sleeping bags or air mattresses to sleep on. The cabins are located next to the two bath houses.”

Hog Waller also o ers an onsite restaurant that’s only open on All Hours Weekends called the Hog Trough (Jagger recommends

the corn nuggets and biscuits and gravy), along with the Hoggly Woggly, the general store where you’ll nd a variety of camping and riding supplies, snacks, T-shirts and sundries. Visitors are encouraged to bring in their own food, drinks and grills to make a day of it. Consider it tailgating for ATVs.

Kay encourages people to come and explore what Hog Waller has to o er.

“So many live surrounded by the concrete jungle,” she says. “We just

enjoy watching people have fun and enjoy the outdoors. It’s wonderful to be able to share our property and have people share the outdoors and the experience with their friends and family. We have met a lot of wonderful people and have watched kids grow up and become adults and then bring their own kids out to the park. That’s what this is all about, family… and getting outside and getting dirty.”

1890 TEA HOUSE BRINGS A NEW TEA EXPERIENCE TO DOWNTOWN OCALA.

For well over a century, the magni cent Queen Anne Style house on Silver Springs Boulevard has been an Ocala icon.

On January 7, 2026, the historic structure o cially opened as the 1890 Tea House. Rich in vintage charm, the statuesque building is also home to Diamond Suites Downtown Ocala, where a variety of professionals o er beauty and self-care services.

“We’re excited to bring this experience to Ocala,” says Ashley Lehnis, property manager.

“Every item on our unique menu was created by Chef Thomas McDougall Jr., including things you won’t nd elsewhere in Ocala.”

There’s history behind the pink, black and white color theme.

Built in 1890 by architect George MacKay for Frank and Annie Teague, the house rst became a restaurant in the 1950s.

“When we looked into the history of the building, we wanted to bring a restaurant back into it,” says Ashley. “The original colors were black and white, but we included pink because so many people knew this as the Pink House.”

Open Wednesday through Sunday, the delectable menu includes a satisfying assortment, ranging from salads and croissant sandwiches to charcuterie and, of course, tempting sweets, such as tiramisu tru e balls. Having a beer and wine license expands the beverage options.

Build your own charcuterie

board for yourself or to share. Choose from a wide array of artisanal meats and cheeses and gourmet accompaniments. Also featured are charcuterie cups— tasty mini versions of the classic.

Among signature items are dessert shooters served in martini glasses, featuring such mouthwatering avors as cheesecake stu ed strawberry.

The menu changes occasionally, as Chef Thomas enjoys surprising guests with seasonal creations.

Highlighting the 1890s Tea House’s specialty, the afternoon tea experience features a stunning three-tier presentation of savories, freshly baked scones and a variety of confections, accompanied by your choice of tea.

High tea is available whenever

the tea shop is open, rather than at a speci c time of day.

Outdoor seating is at linencovered tables topped by umbrellas. Additional seating is available downstairs, as needed. There are two private tea rooms that each seat four o ering cozy settings for a small tea party. With Downtown Suites being in the same building, it’s easy to plan for a spa visit topped o with high tea. Reservations aren’t necessary unless you want a private tea room.

FLOOD OF FLAVOR

EXPLORE A NEW FRONTIER OF OPTIONS, AS CHOICES ABOUND AT THE FORGE.

An exciting new dining and entertainment destination in Ocala o ers a variety of intriguing options.

Located on First Avenue, just three blocks north of the downtown square, The Forge is a 40,000-square-foot complex featuring restaurants, bars, outdoor eateries, live music and event space.

As of late December, restaurants were moving in equipment. Plans call for the complex to open for business in February or early March.

Patrons will enjoy a nostalgic speakeasy with Prohibition-era ambiance and Southern cuisine, an Asian fusion restaurant that

morphs into a nightclub several nights a week, a microbrewery, a Mediterranean-inspired tapas restaurant and bar, a pizzeria, a co ee shop and a premium dessert spot, to mention only a few.

Joel and Sheila Gibson, property owners, collaborated with Wendell Landry and Carlos Sanchez of The Midtown Eateries Group on the entertainment complex.

Drawn by the horses and the weather, the Gibsons moved to Ocala from Spring eld, Missouri, in 2013. Sheila rides dressage and often competes at the World Equestrian Center. Joel is a mechanical engineer and businessman who’s developed multiple companies and built

manufacturing facilities.

“We wanted to get involved with the city, and this is a great way to become part of it,” says Joel.

The complex incorporates two historic buildings. Ocala Iron Works, which inspired The Forge’s name, began operating in the late 1800s. The Turnipseed Building, built in the mid-1920s, was home to Turnipseed Chevrolet until 1985 when the dealership moved and the building became the WMOP radio station.

“We put a lot of e ort into maintaining these old buildings; there’s a lot of history on the site,” says Joel.

“Midtown Eateries LLC will occupy a majority of the lease space with several restaurants and bars. We also have stationary 40-foot food trucks (“container cuisine”) in the outdoor area right across from the microbrewery. We’re already 95 percent leased out,” says Joel, noting that there will be approximately 15 di erent food and beverage o erings.

Joel Gibson Co-Owner, The Forge

“We plan to host some popup markets and hopefully even have on-site retail space,” he adds. “We back up to Tuscawilla Park and are working with Ocala Main Street to have some shared community events.”

“We tried to give Ocala something unique, creating a place where people can connect, celebrate and have a great time,” says Joel.

No worries about parking. Thanks to multiple adjacent parking lots, approximately 300 spaces are available.

From dinner and drinks to gourmet co ee, hand-dipped ice cream and more, The Forge o ers almost three acres of delicious choices. Make plans to check it out!
