The Brick City Anime Festival returns to the World Equestrian Center in expo building 1. I
f there was ever an event that Tampa is known for, it’s the annual Gasparilla Festival. Celebrated in huge fashion since 1904, the festival is drenched in heritage and history. Legend has it that Jose Gaspar was an infamous Spanish pirate who invaded the coast of Florida centuries ago. Formerly with the Spanish Navy, Gasparilla, as he came to be known, captured many ships and collected a fortune in stolen treasures. History says that in 1821 a U.S. Navy ship confronted Gasparilla’s ship and a battle ensued. Realizing he would be defeated, Gasparilla tied himself to an anchor chain, jumped overboard and was never seen again. In the early years of the 20th century local officials were searching for a way to promote

Tampa’s annual May Day celebration. At the time, Mary Louise Dodge was the society editor for the Tampa Tribune when she suggested the legend of Gasparilla as the event’s theme. A krewe of 50 men was formed, and the Tampa Tribune began publishing letters from Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla detailing a pirate invasion by King Gasparilla and his court of men. When May Day arrived, Ye Mystic Krewe pirates appeared on horseback throughout the city, and the locals loved it. It was such a great success that Tampa officials decided to make Gasparilla an annual part of the city’s festivities and thus, the tradition was born. These days, pirate fans from throughout the country travel to Tampa each January to take part in the festival. The fun begins with
the Ashley Children’s Gasparilla presented by Chick Fil-A Tampa Bay on January 24. Family-friendly events include the largest children’s parade in the United States, featuring more than 100 units, including krewe floats, bands, dancers and civic groups tossing beads to the young viewers. There will also be a pirate-technics fireworks extravaganza, a bike safety rodeo, the Preschoolers’ Stroll and the Gasparilla Air Invasion, featuring an amazing display of aerobatic skywriters, formation flights and a precision parachute jump. The Seminole Hard Rock Gasparilla Pirate Festival, happening this year on January 31, begins with hundreds of floating vessels forming a flotilla behind the Jose Gasparilla II, the world’s
Pirate lovers meet up once again on March 1 for the Outbound Voyage as Ye Mystic Krewe again boards the Jose Gasparilla II as they head back to sea. Gasparilla is a free community event, but reserved seating is available for the Gasparilla Invasion Brunch at the Tampa Convention Center, the Children’s Gasparilla Parade and the Gasparilla Parade of the Pirates. Tickets for reserved seating and special experiences are available on the website, as well as a full schedule of all events. Parking is very limited, so carpooling or utilizing a ride-share service are recommended. Once the key is in hand, the krewe leads a celebration of more than 100 floats down Bayshore Boulevard toward downtown. RV near the trails. The property was already zoned for RVs and trailers, so turning it into a camping resort was an easy decision. “I purchased the property and slowly but surely started developing it,” says Anthony. “I took a shot and followed a passion I had for cycling, and being so close to an awesome trail system, that was the key for me. The location is phenomenal to the Greenway. I understood that there was a super demand for RVs, and so we decided to move forward and figure out an idea for how this could be developed.” While Santos is well known for its mountain biking trails, the 16 miles of paved trails and Whimcycle’s direct access to them is a huge benefit for riders just getting started. “When people think about mountain biking, a lot of people think ‘oh I can’t be in the woods 16

or whatever,’ but here, kids, even little kids, can ride the trails,” says Anthony. “If you want to be hardcore, we have that. If you want to just go for a trail ride, you’re good to go. If you want to go on a road ride, you’re good to go. There’s all those components to it. In addition to that, there’s also the Florida Trail System hiking trails that go right through here.” If glamping is more your vacation style, Whimcycle, through Fauna Chalet, LLC, offers three rental cabins right on-site at the resort. Fauna Chalet purchased the cabins in June 2025 and have been busy updating them since the purchase, including new beds and bedding, towels and utensils and kitchen appliances. Basically, you can count on the cabins to include all the amenities you enjoy at home. Fauna Chalet has also added games within the cabins and an add-on workout equipment package. Three cabin layouts are
available, with two log cabins and one cottage available on the north end of the resort—just a few feet from the trail entrance. “Our hope is that our guests enjoy a peaceful, relaxing weekend exploring nature, food and exercise,” says Salvatore. “As we are fairly new to the vacation rental market, we are looking forward to meeting and exceeding all of the challenges to become the best small rental resort at the trails.” Fauna Chalet offers both onebedroom/one-bathroom and twobedroom/two-bathroom options, so it’s perfect for a couple’s weekend away or a larger family getaway. “My vision for Fauna Chalet is to first create a stay experience that is quaint, whimsically

decorated and vintage fun, with all the top amenities one would expect,” says Salvatore. “I pride myself in giving more than one would ask for and always go over and above with generosity and empathy. D
id you know nearby Crystal River is considered the manatee capital of the world? Each year, between 500 and 1,000 manatees travel to the Kings Bay area, especially Three Sisters Springs, to seek refuge from the cold in the constant 72-degree waters of the freshwater spring. And for almost 40 years, the people of Crystal River celebrate these gentle giants with a two-day celebration of all things manatee in the heart of downtown. “The festival features a diverse mix of experiences, from art and craft vendors and a business marketplace to multiple live entertainment stages, kids’ activities, food vendors, and beer and wine gardens,” says Jade White, associate vice president of operations and outreach for the Citrus County Chamber of Commerce. “Equally important is the interactive side of the festival, with conservation partners and

environmental organizations hosting booths and spreading awareness.” In addition to the great vendors and four different entertainment areas, the Chamber has partnered with Three Sisters Springs and the Friends of the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge to offer festivalgoers free shuttle service and entry into Three Sisters, as well as the Friends’ visitor center, which includes a gift shop and education center. For those looking to add a little more adventure to their festival day, Jade has the answer for you. “We also partner with local tour guides to offer guided kayak tours and manatee boat tours at a nominal additional fee,” she says. “The experienced guides are a great resource to discuss our natural attractions as well as manatee education.” Of course, the two-day festival is fun for all, but at the heart of the event is manatee awareness
and education. “Manatees are a beloved symbol of our beautiful Nature Coast, but they face very real threats, including habitat loss, watercraft collisions and environmental changes,” says Jade. “Education is critical because informed visitors make safer choices. When people understand how fragile manatees are and how human behavior impacts them, it directly leads to better outcomes for the species and the ecosystems they depend on. We are blessed to have a community that genuinely cares about our natural resources and wildlife. We have several local advocacy groups that have raised funds and work hard over several years to clean our waterways and replant native eelgrass in an effort to restore our beautiful waterways and springs. These include Save Crystal River, The Homosassa River Restoration Project and TOOFAR.”
Each year thousands of people flock to the Crystal River area in the hopes of seeing manatees in the wild, and Jade has some advice on how to keep it safe for manatees and humans alike. “Many people don’t realize that manatees are extremely sensitive to stress,” she says. “Even wellintentioned human interaction can disrupt their feeding, resting and migration patterns. Protecting manatees isn’t just about avoiding harm; it’s about allowing them the space and calm they need to survive. Also, contrary to popular belief, manatees have a very low body fat ratio. This is why they are drawn to our springs during the colder months, so they can regulate their body temperature. The springs stay at a consistent 72 degrees year-round.” So, Jade’s best advice is simple: observe, don’t interact. “Give manatees plenty of space, follow posted regulations, respect slow-speed zones and never chase, touch or harass them,” she says. “For families and first-time visitors, guided tours and designated viewing areas are a great way to experience manatees safely while learning from experts who understand their behavior and needs.” And the Florida Manatee Festival is the perfect event to learn about and celebrate the Florida manatee. ★ duty in Afghanistan ★ wasn’t supposed to end this way. U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Travis Mills of the 82nd Airborne was on patrol on April 10, 2012, when he was critically injured by an improvised explosive device (IED). Miraculously, Travis survived but lost portions of both arms and legs, leaving him a quadruple amputee. “I don’t remember the explosion,” says Travis. “I was in a drug-induced coma until I woke up on my 25th birthday and learned that I lost my arms and legs.” Travis was awarded Purple Heart and Bronze Star medals for 24

his service, but he would tell you that his greatest accomplishments came after he left the battlefield. Travis would soon face a very different type of active duty. “After I got blown up, I had a choice. I could have just let life beat me down. I could have stayed depressed and lived the rest of my life in a hospital bed, but I had a family,” recalls Travis. “I even told my wife, Kelsey, to take what we had in our bank account and to leave with our 6-month-old daughter,
Chloe. Of course, she told me that was ridiculous; we were a family, and nothing was going to change that.” Travis persevered, forging ahead on his recovery journey. “Never give up. Never quit,” was a mindset he’d always held and was inspired by his parents, coaches and teachers. On the road to recovery—and beyond—it became his personal mantra. Kelsey and Chloe were at his side as Travis tackled challenge after challenge. “My daughter especially played a critical role in my recovery. We learned to walk together when she was 6 months old. There was nothing more motivating than that,” says Travis. Although he would always carry scars even after the pain receded, as he healed Travis didn’t see himself as “wounded.” He didn’t want to be labeled as a “wounded warrior.” He preferred the term “recalibrated” to describe his new normal. Life may have looked different than before, but

Travis Mills Foundation Just 17 months after his devastating injury, Travis and Kelsey founded the Travis Mills Foundation. Launched in September 2013, the nonprofit organization was created “to benefit and assist post-9/11 veterans who have been injured in active duty or as a result of their service to our nation.” “The first and most important reason Kelsey and I started the organization was to bring families together so they could have the opportunity to overcome physical and emotional obstacles together, to rest and to meet fellow recalibrated families,” says Travis. “While I recovered at Walter Reed, Kelsey got to go with me and assist on adaptive sports trips, like skiing,” he says. “That wasn’t the case for most of my fellow soldiers. They went with assistants or guides. It was incredible to be able to have Kelsey there supporting me while I tried out my ski legs.” Travis took that experience to heart and was determined to offer athletic opportunities to other recalibrated veterans. “Many veterans’ organizations offer support to only the veteran; Kelsey and I wanted to create a place that served the entire family,” he notes. “We also hold programming for caregivers specifically, to give them the opportunity to relax and connect with other like-minded people.” The Travis Mills Foundation provides all-inclusive, all-expenses paid programs and getaways for veterans and their families in the stunning Belgrade Lakes Region of Maine. ★ Arden Estate in Rome, Maine, and turned the former summer home into a retreat customized for veterans and their families to relax, connect and make the most of the outdoors. All facilities are handicapped accessible, of course. In addition to the 11,000-squarefoot main building, a 10,000-squarefoot health and wellness center was completed in 2022. “We added a gym, pool, yoga studio and massage rooms to help folks lean into the health, wellness and fitness mindset,” says Heather Labbe, executive director of the Travis Mills Foundation. What started as a seasonal retreat now offers year-round programming. Programs are held 46 weeks a year and are completely free to veterans, families and caregivers. The HHERO program (formerly known as the Family Program) is for the recalibrated veteran, their spouse and children or a guest. The retreat hosts up to eight families per week stay. The Caregiver Program hosts up to eight caregivers for each week-long experience. The program was strategically 26

designed to encourage self-care, rest, relaxation and bonding for those providing care for post-9/11 recalibrated veterans. The Warrior PATHH Program was designed to “cultivate and facilitate post-traumatic growth (PTG) in combat veterans and first responders…to transform times of deep struggle into profound strength and growth.” “After the Travis Mills Foundation Veterans Retreat opened in 2017, we learned about a program out of the Boulder Crest Foundation called Warrior PATHH. It stands for progressive and alternative training for helping heroes, and it provides training needed to thrive after trauma,” says Travis. “The training is for combat veterans and first responders, and it’s peer led, which is one of the reasons that it’s been successful.” He adds that while he hasn’t personally struggled with posttraumatic stress, through his experience, he learned that every individual who experiences trauma like this is affected differently.
Serving Veterans & Families “Although we’re located in Maine, we serve people from all over the country,” says Heather. “Since opening in June 2017, we have served 2,000 veterans and held 281 Family Programs (now known as the HHERO program). Including our Warrior PATHH Program, we have served over 7,500 people.” Veterans and family members interested in programs can read more on the website and apply online. Heather explains that someone from the Foundation will then reach out to explain next steps and coordinate details. “Programs are no cost. We take care of logistics and everything. All they have to do is get to the airport. We pick them up and bring them to the campus, which is located right on the lake,” says Heather. “It’s a holistic and fulfilling experience. The food is great, too!” “‘Never give up. Never quit,’ has continued to be motivation not only for myself, but it’s been
adopted by Travis Mills Foundation participants and supporters. It’s a perspective that sparks something in a lot of folks,” says Travis. “We don’t take credit for saving people’s lives. We just give them the tools to save their own lives,” says Heather. “The goal is to ensure that everybody who needs our services has access to them.” Travis travels regularly as a speaker and consultant, inspiring audiences of all ages as he reminds them to “Never give up. Never quit,” no matter what challenges they may face. “Whether I’m talking with veteran participants at the retreat or addressing an entire room of veterans and first responders, my message is that you can’t control what happens to you, but you can control how you respond,” says Travis. “This doesn’t only apply to the military community, however. Maybe you were in a debilitating car accident or battled a cancer diagnosis that you didn’t think you would survive. The key is focusing on your reaction and mindset rather than the event itself to reclaim your

life after adversity,” says Travis, whose memoir, Tough as They Come, was published in October 2016. In 2017, Travis and Kelsey welcomed a second child, their son, Dax, who they named after Daniel and Alexander—the medics who saved Travis’ life. “After surviving an injury like mine, you don’t know what your future is going to hold,” says Travis. “Kelsey and I were both so grateful for the opportunity to be parents again and to grow our family.”
Never Give Up On Country Because veterans and family members pay nothing for retreats, programs and workshops, the Travis Mills Foundation relies on donations and fundraisers to cover expenses. In Central Florida, their Never Give Up on Country concerts have been a successful fundraising effort for the Foundation. “The concerts have become a regular fundraiser in Ocala, and we only do them there. We’ve found Florida is tremendously supportive of veterans,” says Heather. Marion County officials even declared May 16, 2024, as Travis Mills Day. Travis came to town for a meet and greet and the screening of an award-winning documentary. The fifth Never Give Up on Country concert, presented
by JPMorganChase, takes place on Friday, February 6, 2026, from 4 to 11pm. Once again, the concert will be held at Sheltair Aviation at the Ocala International Airport. Multi-platinum country music artist Chris Janson, whose latest album Wild Horses was released in August 2025, returns as the headliner. Up-and-coming country act 12/OC, featuring brothers Will and Reid Nichols, opens the show. Linda Bammann, a local equestrian and owner of Laughing Horse Farm, is a board member of the Travis Mills Foundation. It was originally her idea to have a concert as a fundraiser in Ocala. “My father is retired Navy, having served in WWII and the Reserves, and my husband is a Marine Corps veteran,” says Linda. “I’m actively involved at JPMorganChase in our veterans’ job mission and am also on the board of the Marine Corp Heritage Foundation, so I’m steeped in the belief that we get to live our lives free because of the sacrifices of our military and their families.” JPMorganChase is the major presenting sponsor and has been involved in every concert for the Foundation. “What makes the Travis Mills Foundation so unique is that we not only support our military veterans, but we support their
families,” says Linda. “Travis realized that without his family to support him, he would have had a much more difficult time recalibrating his life, so we at the Foundation support the families alongside their veteran family member.” The evening of patriotic and country music remains popular with attendees. “Chris Janson is a great supporter of the military and really appreciates the sacrifices of the service members and their families,” says Linda. “We had such a great time and such positive reviews last year. Chris was quick to help us again this year and is actually donating part of his fee to us. Having an artist of this caliber here in Ocala is unique.” Linda adds that Sheltair is also generously donating part of their fee for using the hangar. Entertainment isn’t limited to the stage. The All Veteran Group parachute team will jump onto the scene—literally. Local combat pilot veterans from The Humble Squadron will do a flyover. These pilots fly vintage aircraft, which will be parked outside the hanger after the flight. Also on display are old warbird planes from the American Honor Foundation based at Jumbolair. All of these vintage WWII-era planes are still airworthy and flying. Concertgoers have the opportunity to view the planes up close. General admission tickets are $75 (plus fees) with an option to purchase a tasty boxed meal from Mission BBQ for $20. General admission seating is in the tarmac
area outside the hangar. Premiere tickets are available for $125 (plus fees), which include a cash bar and parking. A Mission BBQ dinner can be added for an additional $20. Premium seating is under the hangar and closest to the stage. “We’ve done the concert in different locations. We have some great partners at the airport, and it’s incredibly accessible. It went so well in 2025, we decided to do it there again,” says Heather. Last year’s concert attracted about 1,500 attendees and raised $500,000 for the Travis Mills Foundation. Organizers anticipate an even bigger crowd this year. “It’s a really fun, family-oriented evening and a great party to support a good cause,” says Linda. “Every dollar raised by the ticket sales goes to the Foundation. Many people are donating products and services, so the more tickets we sell, the more money we can raise for our recalibrated veterans.” And yes, Travis Mills will be there in person. “He’s come to all the concerts and makes an inspirational appearance on stage,” says Linda, adding that concert proceeds directly benefit the Foundation’s programs. Attendees can also purchase exclusive merchandise or donate directly to the Travis Mills Foundation, if they choose. It’s not often one gets the opportunity to be a hero. Supporting the Travis Mills Foundation by attending the concert or via donation allows you to make a positive impact on the lives of deserving veterans and their families.
