A LASTING LEGACY

THE GREG GRAHAM LEGACY FOUNDATION RAISES AWARENESS FOR MENTAL HEALTH.

On October 25, 2020, Ocala/Marion County lost an icon when the City of Ocala Police Chief, Greg Graham, passed away in a plane crash. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched. The Greg Graham Legacy Foundation is still touching the lives of the vulnerable among us. Each year the foundation takes up a cause, and this year’s cause is mental health.

At a recent luncheon in the Churchill ballroom of the Hilton Ocala, two grants were given to deserving nonpro ts. The luncheon was presented by the Adam Hanson Better Communities Fund and Eaton’s Beach Sand Bar and Grill. The mission of the luncheon was to raise awareness for mental health, and this was certainly accomplished.

“We are thrilled to announce His House for Her and Open Arms Village as this year’s grant recipients,” said Angie Peters, board chair of the Chief Greg Graham Legacy Foundation. “Their commitment to their respective causes and the positive impact they have on our community align perfectly with Chief Graham’s values. We are con dent that the grants awarded will further their mission and enable them to continue their exceptional work.”

His House for Her, one of the grant recipients, is an organization that has been at the forefront of supporting women who have experienced substance abuse, domestic violence and other trauma providing them with a safe haven and the tools necessary to rebuild their lives.

Open Arms Village, the second grant recipient, is an organization that has been a beacon of hope for many homeless individuals. Their agency provides shelter and support services to single men, the largest homeless population in Marion County.

To donate or for further information on this grantgiving process by the foundation see their Facebook page or go to chiefgreggrahamlegacyfoundation.org.

MUSIC WITH HEART

MUSICIANS’ DREAM VENUE DELIVERS ON ALL LEVELS.

Poor acoustics are a musician’s worst nightmare, and all too often when we go out to hear live music, the sound doesn’t live up to expectations.

That’s never the case at Heartwood Soundstage in Gainesville. Their oneof-a-kind music lineup takes place in a venue built by musicians for musicians. The result is a memorable performance every time—for both performers and the audience.

Heartwood Soundstage opened in February 2017, but the idea germinated earlier.

Long-time musician and recording engineer

Bob McPeek owned Mirror Image Recording Studio where he worked with standout local acts like Sister Hazel, Bo Diddley, Less than Jake and others.

“Bob and I started having conversations about the lack of a really good acoustical space for live performances in Gainesville,” says Dave Melosh, a musician and one of the

owners of Heartwood Soundstage. “We were both recording engineers. Our idea was to open a live recording studio, which we expanded to be able to have a small studio audience.”

Bob saw their vision completed before he passed away last October.

Thanks to the world-class sound system and the best microphones on the planet, it’s truly an audiophile experience featuring a healthy variety of music styles.

In addition to the indoor stage, there’s an outdoor venue with festival seating that accommodates 2,000 people. Shows average 90 minutes to two hours long, and ticket prices vary by show, starting at $10. Food is sold on-site, and there’s a wide selection of beer

and wine available. Depending on the show, the audience can be seated or standing. For example, when the salsa orchestra performs, everyone’s on their feet!

During the fall and spring, the venue features live music two to three nights a week.

A major event is the annual Tom Petty Weekend, scheduled for October 20-22 this year.

“We have people from all over the world come for that event,” says Dave. “It’s the festival of the o cial Tom Petty Fan Club.”

The venue’s Nashville-based talent buyer, Andrew Hall, has already booked ve national acts for one week in January 2024.

“People come to Heartwood because we book artists that give you chill bumps,” says Dave. “We’ve worked hard to be a communitycentered organization. A lot of our bookings come from artists, musicians and fans in Gainesville. It’s a very organic experience. It’s a sacred space. People come rst and foremost to experience the music.”

MEET THE RHYMING WRITER

Susan Snyder worked in the Marion County Public School system for 20 years and often wrote rhyming poems for friends and colleagues, plus co-authored a successful phonics program.

“I would take everyone’s thoughts and write them down,” she says. “People liked my rhymes and gave me the con dence to keep at it. I write and create stories from what I hear.”

Susan jokes that many have an opinion about what a writer’s process looks like and what they do all day.

“Sitting at the computer, throwing away page after page of less than satisfactory writing,” Susan laughs. “People ask how many hours a day I spend at my computer, and I joke that it’s typically zero. I get my ideas from life, and I jot them down as I see or hear them. Then, I start to develop the characters in my mind. What would the animal do? How would the people react?”

Once, while at school, Susan witnessed a

handful of young girls run out of the bathroom squealing about a frog being in the bathroom. That was the catalyst for the popular book There’s A Frog Trapped in the Bathroom. Her colleague (the same one she coauthored the phonics program with) submitted the book to publishers without Susan’s knowledge in the hopes that it would be printed. Eventually, the letters started coming in. Thirtyseven rejection letters later, Susan got the letter she never knew she was waiting for. A new children’s book publisher didn’t only want to publish one of Susan’s books, she wanted to publish two of them. The second book was The Very Stubborn Caterpillar

Known as Susan Snyder the Rhyming Writer, Susan specializes in fun, lighthearted children’s books, each of which features a loveable, adventurous critter of some sort. She has written seven books for young readers and is currently working on a new book, Sammy’s

Quest, about a young zoo elephant who wants to explore his world.

When Susan’s boys were young, she let them pick out three books to read at bedtime. This bonding experience is something she will always cherish. She hopes other parents get that same experience from sharing her books with their little ones. It’s also one of the main reasons she loves to get out into the community, whether at local festivals or by visiting elementary schools.

“I love making kids giggle with my stories,” Susan says. “I love the feedback I get from readers and their families. These books are fun and happy to read. I hope they help instill a love for reading early on, because without reading you can’t do much.”

PASSION FOR PICKLEBALL

PICKLEBALL IS THE WORLD’S FASTEST-GROWING SPORT, AND POP CITY PICKLEBALL IS OCALA’S PREMIER PICKLEBALL EXPERIENCE. ARE YOU PLAYING YET?

WRITTEN BY KARIN FABRY CUSHENBERY

Longtime friends and sports enthusiasts Daniel Gray, EJ Nieves and Kyle Artman were looking for a new challenge when they settled on pickleball. There’s no denying the sport’s growing popularity, so the guys thought, “Why not?”

“In true EJ and Daniel fashion, we went to Dick’s and picked up the cheapest paddles we found,” Daniel recalls. “We met up with Kyle at the park, and he introduced us to our rst matchups.”

The duo was paired up to play with others, including a 70-plus year-old woman with two

knee braces. While Kyle was dominating his match and already picking up a ton of skill, the others weren’t having the same luck.

“We thought, ‘Oh we’ve got this,’” laughs Daniel. “Everyone was very helpful in showing us the rules of play, but, in the end, we got our butts whooped.”

It was clear, though, that the trio of friends had found their newest passion.

Daniel and EJ took an instant liking to the sport and showed up to play week after week, honing their skills and meeting new people

along the way.

“Talk about diversity,” Daniel says. “Pickleball draws in every age group, from kids all the way up to people in their 90s.

Just a few months into their new pickleball adventures, EJ, Daniel and Kyle decided to form their own company to introduce even more people to the sport.

“Pop City Pickleball falls under the umbrella of Pop City Sports,” says EJ. “We are trying to build bridges and bring people together from all over to experience this sport. There are several pickleball hubs throughout town, including Coehadjoe Park and The Villages. Our trajectory is to create events and ‘pop up’ all over Marion County and beyond.”

“Throughout the nation, games have appeared on barges in the ocean and even the oor of the New York Stock Exchange,” Kyle says. “If the space is at and large enough to lay out a pickleball court, it’s fair game.”

Pop City currently holds games at Ocala’s Downtown Market on the fourth Thursday of the month from 6-9pm. The facility o ers ve courts, all of which are covered and lighted, so games go on rain or shine. You’ll sign a waiver and receive an armband to play. Pop City is fully insured as well.

“Each month we open 100 slots for players,” says EJ. “Our last events have sold out, which is exciting.”

One of the best things about Pop City is that participation is free. Tickets would typically cost $20 per player, but instead Pop City secures a monthly sponsorship from a local business to cover the costs of the games.”

“We take great pride being a pillar in the community,” says Kyle. “There is a lot of connection between the people who come out to participate in the sports and the community businesspeople who sponsor the events. They appreciate each other, and those

“Pop City Pickleball is open to everyone and anyone,” says Daniel, “from people who have never picked up a paddle to those who travel to play in tournaments. We have a designated court for beginners, and we have paddles and balls available for those who want to try it out. If you’re a single player or a team, we will pair you up and get you on your way.”

A typical pickleball game lasts between 10 and 20 minutes, and the goal is to be the rst team to reach 11.

“Think of a pickleball court as an oversized table tennis court and an undersized tennis court,” says Daniel. “The game is a bit slower paced than tennis until the action picks up in the kitchen. You can’t volley in the kitchen.”

The rst serve is made diagonally to the opposing team; the ball must bounce one time before it’s returned. As players move toward the net into the area called the kitchen, the speed of play picks up.

“When the action meets in the kitchen, it’s called a dink,” says EJ. “Think a bunt in baseball; it’s all about strategic ball placement. When you’re playing close to the net, it’s a lot of upper body and arm movements. This sport is easier on the lower body; you’re not sprinting back and forth to the ball. It’s more about the science of ball placement.”

“In tennis, the typical woman’s serve is 60 miles per hour,” says Daniel. “In pickleball, the average serve is about 25 miles per hour. The sport is definitely less taxing on the body. Players are able to control the ball, and that makes it a fun experience. You don’t have to be an experienced pickleball player to have a great game.”

Sound like a lot? No worries, Pop City pros are more than willing to explain the rules and get you comfortable with the sport. So, the guys basically say just show up. They fell in love with the sport quickly, and they bet you will, too.

“Before really getting into pickleball, I was new, too,” says Kyle. “You just have to rip o the

Band-Aid and give it a try. There are a lot of great, great people who come out and participate in our events. The sport is easy to catch on to, and it’s an energizing, rewarding game. It really makes sense why pickleball is catching on so quickly. Sure, some people are competitive, but others just want to have fun. There’s a certain magnetism to the game. We will show our newcomers some tips and tricks to get going, and by the time they are done with the rst game and get to 11 points, they’ll be able to go and show someone else how to play.”

To learn about and sign up for monthly open play at the Downtown Market, visit popcitypickleball.com. There are also plenty of volunteer opportunities with the group, plus sponsorship opportunities for local businesses

and organizations. In October, Pop City Pickleball will team up with the City of Ocala to bring a pickleball tournament to the Mary Sue Rich Community Center.

“This isn’t our day job—it’s our passion,” says Daniel, “and we want to share it. People can connect with us and learn more about pickleball on all platforms of social media. This is a very community-based sport. We have a live DJ playing music at our games, plus beer and wine available, and food trucks. Families are even welcome to bring in their own coolers. We don’t want there to be a single obstacle in the way for you to come out and try pickleball. It’s easy, the tickets have been sponsored and it’s fun. We are building a culture here— pickleball just happens to be the vessel.”

CREATIVE CLASSES

WHETHER YOU’RE CONSIDERING ART CLASSES FOR THE FIRST TIME, OR YOU’RE A SEASONED ARTIST LOOKING TO ADD TO YOUR ARTISTIC ARSENAL, THE NEWLY OPENED CHELSEA ART CENTER HAS SOMETHING FOR YOU.

WRITTEN BY KARIN FABRY-CUSHENBERY

Barbara Fife has been in the Ocala area for two decades, and for much of that time, she has been active with various art groups. The co-founder of the Ocala Calligraphy Guild has taken her love for local arts a step further by opening the Chelsea Art Center in Chelsea Square Plaza o Silver Springs Boulevard. She acts as the center’s owner and director.

“There’s really nothing quite like it in Ocala,” she says. “We o er a vast selection of art classes each month and are excited to be adding on to the opportunities that art-loving children and adults have available in our community.”

The concept for the center grew out of the realization that various art groups, including Barbara’s Calligraphy Guild, had trouble finding locations suitable for their meetings and workshops.

“One day, I was visiting friends at CC Fine Arts Gallery in Chelsea Square Plaza and saw the forlease sign on the door,” Barbara says. “I decided to go for it. Renovations started a year ago, and during that time, I took on an adjacent unit as well. The center o ers two classrooms, a large reception area and an art reference library.”

The 4,705-square-foot building had its grand opening in the end of August, and classes have been in full swing for a few months now.

“We have 30 artists o ering classes at the center right now,” Barbara says, “and that list is

always growing. We have all the classic art classes you’d expect, including oils, acrylics, watercolors, pastels and drawing, plus so much more.”

A quick glimpse through the center’s online scheduling agenda reveals an impressive assortment of art o erings, including things like pastels, silk scarf painting, colored pencils, zentangling (Barbara says it takes doodling to the next level), calligraphy and letter art, and much more. On September 9, Al Black, one of the original Florida Highwaymen artists, will be at the center as local artists paint a Florida landscape scene along with him. In October, photography classes will be added as well. The list goes on. Each artist has their own 5-foot table to spread out and feel comfortable, and the entire facility is wheelchair accessible.

The Chelsea Art Center o ers classes for kids from about age 7 on up. There are also

classes geared toward teens and adults as well. After school art classes begin this month and are available for youngsters ages 7 to 12. The class will meet once a week for a month and will focus on one topic for the month. Options may include polymer clay, drawing and painting.

The duration of the classes depends on the topic, with some being Bob Ross make-and-take style classes while others may be for two, four or even 10 weeks.

“The programs keep developing and changing,” Barbara says. “None of this will put money in my pocket. This is a philanthropic endeavor, and the classes go to pay the rent and keep the lights on. I just have tremendous satisfaction for how much people have been enjoying the center so far, and I am looking forward to seeing more people come out and experience the Chelsea Art Center.”

3 Vaccine Recommendations for People Over 60

Immunizations are an important part of healthcare and we want you to be aware that your primary care team and pharmacist are important resources to discuss which vaccines are right for you and your family. Below is information on three vaccine recommendations for people over 60 and why we recommend them.

Influenza “Flu” Vaccine

Getting the flu vaccine is one of the best ways to prevent the flu and its complications. The CDC recommends everyone 6 months and older get the flu vaccine every flu season, which usually peaks in the fall and winter. The best time to get your flu shot is before November, so your body has built up a strong defense before flu season peaks. Flu shots usually become available in early September and are available through March.

The type or strain of flu can vary year to year, so the flu vaccine is made from the four most common types of flu in order to give you the best chance of protection. If you are 65 years or older, ask for the high-dose flu vaccine because studies suggest it better protect you.

Respiratory Syncytial Virus “RSV” Vaccine

RSV is a common respiratory virus and can cause serious illness in children, people over the age of 60, in people with lung conditions, and in people with heart conditions.

RSV is easily spread and is most common in the fall and winter. The CDC recommends that if you are aged 60 or older, you take the vaccine to protect you against getting RSV. Call 352-565-5667 or visit our website to learn more. VillageMedical.com

Pneumonia Vaccine

Pneumonia is an infection in your lungs that can be caused by a virus or bacteria. Pneumonia vaccines are available to help protect you against pneumonia caused by bacteria.

If you are aged 65 or older, a one-time dose of the Prevnar 20 pneumonia vaccine is recommended by the CDC. If you have previously received a pneumonia vaccine, check with your doctor as some people may need more than one dose.

Vaccines are an important way to protect yourself against illness. While the vaccines above are strongly recommended, there are other vaccines you may want to consider such as COVID-19, Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis) and Shingles. It is important to talk with your primary care doctor to make sure you are updated on the vaccines you need to help you live your new well.
