THROUGH JULY 21 This fun theatrical production will take place at the Hippodrome Theatre in Gainesville. Watch as six tweens compete to become the spelling bee champion. Eight will compete, one will win as they work their way through words (some seemingly made up) in the bee. ATTACK OF THE BLOODSUCKERS THROUGH AUGUST 31

The Discovery Center’s newest exhibit, Attack of the Bloodsuckers!, will be on display through Saturday, August 31 at the Discovery Center. The center is open Tuesdays through Saturdays, 10am-4pm. Dive into the world of mosquitos, fleas, ticks, leeches and other parasites.

Guests will explore their characteristics, habitats, the reasons they bite and the role they play in the ecosystem. General admission to the Discovery Center is $8 per person or $28 for a family of four.

OCALA WATER LANTERN FESTIVAL

Water Lantern Festivals are popular throughout the country, and now, the trend is making its way to Ocala’s Tuscawilla Park. On June 1 gather with family and friends to reflect on the past, live in the present and plan for the future. Each adult ticket includes a floating lantern kit, LED candle, drawstring bag, conversation and playing cards, a marker, plus lantern retrieval and water cleanup. Write a personal or hopeful message on the bag, set it loose and watch as it reflects on the water along with hundreds of other lanterns. There will also be food trucks, live music and plenty of family fun. Gates open at 5:30pm, design your lantern at 8pm and the release takes place from 8:30-9:30pm. At 11am in the auditorium, artist Margaret Ross Tolbert will give a talk entitled, “Canvassing Florida Springs,” highlighting works on display in her solo exhibition. UF FAMILY FISHING DAY JUNE 15 This fun, family event allows for a morning of catch-and-release fishing with UF Fishing for Success. ezerland Park, on Orlando’s International Drive near Universal Studios, is Florida’s largest indoor attraction, with over 850,000 square feet of family entertainment options. n recent press, the Vampire Facial® has taken some heat.

Three clients from a New Mexico med spa were exposed to HIV after the procedure.

There are many reasons why this occurred, but, rest assured, this could never occur at Regen Ocala.

I have attended over 40 of Dr. Runels’ workshops and helped teach the Vampire Facial® with him. I asked Dr. Runels’ for a statement regarding the issue.

Also, the devices being used to perform the procedures were not FDA approved. The one that came into question during the New Mexico investigation was the microneedling device, which was purchased off the internet from a foreign country to avoid our FDA regulations. This device had no way to prevent blood from getting inside the device and mixing with the next client’s blood.

“People got hurt because dishonest and unqualified people pretended to be doing a Vampire Facial®, advertised that they

OUTDOOR THERAPY CHANGING THE CULTURE OF MENTAL HEALTH FOR FIRST RESPONDERS AND VETERANS. WRITTEN BY CYNTHIA MCFARLAND

I

t’s a tragic realty that more first responders in the United States die by suicide every year than in the line of duty.

Determined to change that sad statistic, multiple organizations have dedicated their efforts to helping veterans, law enforcement officers, firefighters and other first responders take a proactive approach to mental health.

Two of these organizations are based in Ocala.

H3 ADVENTURES “The whole goal is to change the mental health culture in our first responders,” says Jimbo Butler, assistant director of H3 Adventures.

With a mission to “Heal Hometown Heroes (H3) through Adventures,” the program offers hunting, fishing, boating, hiking and other outdoor activities to first responders.

H3 Adventures is a division of 10 Can Outdoors, which was founded a decade ago

by Matthew Burke, Ph.D., a Florida native and 13-year Air Force combat veteran.

“10 Can has been doing amazing services for our veterans and first responders, but we saw there was still a need in our local first responders’ community, so we started this division devoted to them,” explains Jimbo, a former firefighter.

H3 Adventures offers an array of outdoor therapy sessions, including hunting, fishing, kayaking, mountain biking and even

pickleball. It’s a different version of mental health first aid.

“We’re doing a lot of fishing trips now up and down the St. Johns River and alligator hunting starts soon. We don’t charge anything; all activities are funded by grassroots efforts from donations, bike riding fundraisers and selling T-shirts,” says Jimbo, who now works as an electrician but also puts in 40-plus hours a week volunteering with H3 Adventures.

“We believe it’s easier to raise a warrior than to save a hero. We try to teach them that getting into the outdoors is a form of mental therapy and to get them in the habit of this.

It’s about mentoring the next generation of first responders,” he says, noting that many

“We’re building relationships in the 352 area. We need to take care of our people,” says Jimbo.

10-7 FISHING In police code, “10-7” means “off-duty.”

With 14 years in law enforcement, Tim Marton knows all too well how crucial it is to have healthy ways to decompress when off duty.

As a fisherman, he also understands the positive impact of time spent on the water, whether it’s with his family or the guys.

Having lived in Marion County since 2009, Tim is a deputy with the Marion County Sheriff ’s Office. Last year, he and his wife, Patti, 22

launched 10-7 Fishing, a business designed to support healthy outdoor options for first responders to escape the daily stress they face while on duty.

As Tim explains, the program is not about showing off by catching big fish or setting records. It’s all about spending time on the water and letting your guard down in a safe place.

Each 10-7 Fishing outing on local waterways is customized around the individual.

“We cater it to whatever the person wants and how they want to relax. Whatever suits them best is what we work out for them,” says Tim, noting that this could be hanging out with their family on the water or just guys doing some serious fishing.

Participants don’t pay for anything.

“We have recently started working closely

with H3 Adventures,” says Tim. “My ultimate goal is to get a network of local charter captains and use our funds to offer three to five charters a month.”

He hopes that as the program grows, first responders will turn to 10-7 Fishing not just to recover from trauma but also to help build an inner resilience to the stress that is inherent in their professions.

Although Tim has dealt with his share of traumatic events on duty, he’s grateful to have a solid family life that balances the toll his job takes.

“Family is one of the most important things,” says Tim, a father of two. “If you make your life good at home and can open up, then you’ll be in

a much better place if trauma comes.”

Rather than picking up every extra shift or working so much overtime, he hopes that first responders will take a little time to build resilience into their lives by spending time on the water.

ou don’t have to vacation in Hawaii to learn the basics of hanging ten. Up and down Florida’s Atlantic Coast, surf schools offer day- or week-long lessons and camps where both kids and adults can get their feet wet.

You’ll be flashing the shaka in no time!

ST. AUGUSTINE SURF SCHOOL “St. Augustine is a great place to be a surfer or for someone learning to surf,” says Dustin Estes, owner and head instructor at the St. Augustine Surf School. “Miles of white-sand beaches and some of the most consistent waves in the whole state make St. Augustine the perfect little surf town.”

Dustin offers lessons that can fit in any vacationer’s budget. From private, one-on-one lessons to either small or large group lessons, Dustin says that, in the 14 years the school has been in operation, almost everyone has been able to stand and ride the waves during the first lesson.

If you’re in the area for an extended period, consider signing the kids up for a week of surf camp. Camp runs Monday-Thursday every week during the summer from 9am-12:30pm.

“My wife, Lauren, and I, along with our now 19- and 16-year-old daughters, have been leading camps for 14 years,” Dustin says. “We strive for a fun and safe experience, and year after year parents make sure that we know it is the highlight of the summer for so many students.”

In addition to lessons and camps, the school also offers surf board and paddleboard rentals and can deliver both right to your vacation rental or hotel.

“I think a lot of people look at surfing as something that has a very hard point of entry— and it does,” says Dustin. “But taking a lesson with our company eases that so much. We are 24

PURE LIFE SURF SCHOOL As one of Ocala’s closest beaches, Daytona is typically the go-to destination for a quick daytrip. And lucky for us, Pure Life Surf School, located in Daytona Beach Shores, is one of Florida’s most unique and sought-after surf schools, offering both private and group surfing lessons for all ages and a top-rated kids’ summer surf camp.

“Daytona Beach is one of the best places in the U.S. to learn how to surf,” says founder and director LJ Kuzmovich. “We have consistent 1-to-3-foot waves pretty much all year, as well as

nicely formed sandbars, which makes for good peeling waves.”

Lessons at Pure Life are broken down into three phases—and this strategy is sure to have you up and riding the waves in the first lesson.

The first 10-15 minutes will be done on land and goes over proper positioning, techniques and safety. The second phase begins with paddling out to the surf break where you will identify the changes in the waves correlating to the shallow or deep parts of the water. Here you will also learn to sit on the board and how to turn when you’re ready to catch a wave. At this stage instructors push students into the waves to help get them going. In phase three, the instructor takes more of a coaching approach by instructing students on wave selection and timing as well as breaking down the student’s technique.

Pure Life also has a surf camp for kids ages 7-16 all summer long, Monday-Thursday from 9am-12:30pm.

“Our goal is to make sure our kids are having fun and making a connection with the ocean,” says LJ. “We enhance their surfing skills, knowledge of the ocean environment and surfing etiquette, especially when surfing crowded surf locations. Surfing brings us so much joy, and we love to share that with other people.”

Meet Dr. Sajid Khan of Marion Heart Associates

M

arion Heart Associates, P.A. provides the most educated and trained staff with one objection: putting the patient first. This is what Dr. Sajid Khan finds to be most satisfying working with the staff and other doctors associated with Marion Heart, Associates, P.A. in Ocala.

Originally from India, Dr. Sajid Khan, his wife and three children love living in Ocala. As he explains, “We came here to vacation at Walt Disney World, and chose to stay!” The warm climate reminds them a lot of the weather in India.

Dr. Khan feels, “I tend to lean more towards what the patient wants.” He has discovered that when patients are happy, then they are more comfortable in wanting to find solutions to their health problems. He adamantly claims, “Let’s not dismiss the patient’s point of view. That’s very important to me.”

His life’s inspiration is his uncle, who is a physician in a remote area of India, who people travel for miles to line up to see. When Dr. Khan was a young child, he would watch and admire the works of his uncle. He remembers his uncle telling him, “Don’t do anything else. What is better than saving lives?”

Dr. Khan’s inspiration at work is helping others. “I feel the biggest inspiration is the satisfaction of my patients.

ince Remington’s Prime Steakhouse opened in late February, the restaurant has been embraced by locals and visitors.

Located on U.S. Highway 27, just around the corner from the World Equestrian Center, Remington’s Prime Steakhouse is owned by several area partners.

The restaurant’s name was influenced by prominent Western painter and sculptor Frederic Remington and, of course, Remington rifles.

“We wanted to complement WEC, which is so dramatic and stunning, but to have our own 34

Western vibe and Montana feel,” says Cindi Nicholson, co-owner and operating manager.

“Shannon Roth was my guidance and designer.”

Patrons are immediately welcomed into the warm and moody atmosphere, which features dark navy walls, Western and equine art, and even showcases some local horses.

Guests in jeans and boots will feel right at home in Remington’s fine dining yet casual ambiance.

But make no mistake, the focus is on the food.

Chef Randal White is a native Floridian with a long and respected history in Ocala, including

Chilean sea bass and Scottish salmon arrive in the kitchen fresh on ice, as do the jumbo sea scallops and cold-water lobster tails.

Chef Randal’s expertise extends to the tantalizing dessert menu with all items made in house. From the peanut butter torte to the Oreo bread pudding and bourbon pecan cheesecake, each sweet creation provides the perfect ending.

In addition to over 600 bottles of wine, you’ll find a mesmerizing choice of cocktails as mixologist Kasey Councilor works her magic at the full-service bar.

“Kasey created most of the cocktails, many of which are a play on the show Yellowstone. We even have a ‘Train Station,’” says Cindi.

Although Remington’s may open for lunch in the fall, current hours are 5-10pm Tuesday through Friday and 4-10pm on Saturday. Walk-ins are welcome, but reservations are recommended.

His culinary skills are now on full display at Remington’s.

Indeed, Chef Randal put his unique spin on the recipes created specifically for Remington’s, such as the Caesar salad featuring fried salami threads instead of typical croutons, the goat cheese bruschetta and escargot prepared with tender chunks of fresh lobster.

All steaks are USDA Prime and cooked over an open flame from kiln-dried cherry and hickory logs. From filet mignon and dry-aged Kansas City strip to Delmonico and Wagyu ribeye, each steak is hand cut and prepared to order.

When you can’t decide, the answer is the Steak Charcuterie, which features three steaks, a 16-ounce pork chop and multiple sides. This feast serves four.

Meet Dr. Alfonso Martinez

Putting Patients First at Marion Heart Associates

o one is just a number at Marion Heart Associates, P.A. The doctors and staff carry the underlying passion that it is all about their patients. Getting to know their patients personally is one of their key objectives.

It is one of the reasons Dr. Alfonso Martinez joined Marion Heart Associates, P.A. as the Primary Care Physician. Originally from Puerto Rico, Dr. Martinez, and his wife moved to Ocala in 2015. He will be the first to tell you how much they love living here. When asked how he feels about Ocala, he shares, “I wanted to run away from the rat race, and Ocala is perfect!”

Dr. Martinez recently joined Marion Heart Associates, P.A. and excitedly exclaims, “I am proud to be here at Marion Heart Associates, P.A. to provide primary care for the community.” His philosophy is completely about his patients’ care. As he states, “Healthcare is providing my patients with the best care possible, making them feel welcome, and cared for.”

Dr. Martinez’s philosophy goes years back to his childhood. It is the foundation as to why he decided and chose to get into the medical

field. When he was young, he used to get sick often. He had severe asthma and had to be hospitalized several times, sometimes for up to a week. As he recalls, “I remember going to the hospital feeling like I was going to die, and after treatment, I would feel like a million dollars. That feeling is what I try to bring to my patients, and hopefully I make that happen.”

Dr. Martinez is not inspired at all by the ‘business’ side of medicine and medical practice. As he shares, “The paperwork part is not fun, but when you have the contact with the patient and they are grateful for how they are seeing their lives and health improving, that’s what is important.” His inspiration comes from his patients. As he divulges, “Seeing my patients feel good and how they see their health improving, now THAT’S inspiration!”

He is so passionate about his patients that he knows all of them by their first names.
