Joe and Aaron are Marion County firefighters/paramedics; Gary is a family practice physician; Tony is a registered nurse; TC works for a public relations company and Steve is a pharmaceutical sales rep. Cover songs are always requested by audiences, but the enthusiastic response to their originals has encouraged Radlin Rootz to pursue this avenue. “The goal was always to write and release originals,” says Joe, noting that all band members contribute to this. In addition to performing at clubs in Ocala, Gainesville and Orlando, Radlin Rootz plays the Squares in The Villages, as well as weddings and special events. READ ON! FROM BOOK CLUBS TO BOOKSTORES, OCALA IS A BOOK LOVER’S PARADISE. HERE’S THE LOWDOWN ON A FEW OPTIONS TO EXPAND YOUR READING REPERTOIRE. WRITTEN BY KARIN FABRY-CUSHENBERY

T

he new year is the perfect time to set a year-long reading goal. Whether you’re into mysteries or biographies, here are some ideas for ways to increase your bookworm cred.

BYOB If you don’t want the obligation of reading a specific book each month but want to hang out with fellow readers and discuss books and life in general, the Ocala chapter of the Silent Book Club may be the answer. It’s a BYOB (bring your own book) type of club that meets regularly in Ocala. Consider it a book club for introverts. “We read silently together for an hour and then talk about what everyone is reading,” says club organizer Kadisha Diaz. “We’re basically a book club where talking isn’t necessary if that’s not something you are comfortable with.” It’s a laid back, casual atmosphere where fellow bookworms can form friendships and bond. Past meetings have taken place at the Juniper General Store and the Freedom Public Library. They even hold virtual meetings on occasion. “We are very judgement free,” says Kadisha. Everyone is welcome as long as they are reading. Silent Book Clubs are a national phenomenon, and Kadisha is very passionate about the group. “This group has helped me meet wonderful new people who I now call my friends,” she says. “I believe reading is very important. It’s therapy for some, an escape for others and new knowledge.” To find out more and learn about upcoming meetups, join Silent Book Club Ocala Chapter on Facebook and stay tuned.

A NOVEL IDEA Michelle Gambardella has always loved to read. It’s no surprise that she chose books as her life’s work. 24

352PREVIEW.COM

“I’ve been an avid reader since a very young age,” she says. “I was the kid who would read while everyone else was riding their bikes. I would rush through schoolwork so I could get to my book.” As the owner of A Novel Idea, a used bookstore located in the Ocala Centre 6 movie theater plaza on Silver Springs Boulevard, Michelle loves to share her joy of reading with others. With more than 40,000 books on the shelves and thousands more in the back, there’s something for every interest. Peruse the book stacks while visiting, and take a seat in one of the comfy chairs to read a few pages. While relaxing, you might get a visit from Lord Byron, the resident kitty who calls the store home. “Customers love him, and he gets plenty of treats, toys and hugs,” says Michelle. Michelle adds that they have thousands of titles in the store, but the top-selling category is fiction, followed by romance, mystery and adventure. “If you’re into non-fiction, the most popular category is history, and then religion, self-help and cooking,” she says.”

But A Novel Idea, which is celebrating its 15th year in business, has far more categories than just those, including an impressive children’s book section that features everything from board books to kids’ chapter books. Another benefit to used bookstore shopping? Most of the customers in the store work off credit and trade, although it’s not required. “Customers can bring in their gently used books, and if we have a need for them, we will give you credit for up to 25 percent of the book’s cover price,” says Michelle. “Then you can use that credit to purchase new books. This allows readers to try out new books and authors without spending a lot of money. In this economy that’s very important. It’s a lot less expensive than a bigger store or online option and books won’t be gathering dust on your shelves. The experts at A Novel Idea even keep track of the books you’ve read in a series and what books you still have left to read. ig horses are a way of life for thirdgeneration Clydesdale breeders Shannon and Karen Cobbs. The family traces their Scottish lineage back to 1240 and proudly promotes Scotland’s native draft breed. Shannon and Karen have lived here since 2012 and happily share these majestic horses with guests through The Clydesdale Experience tours at their Grandview Clydesdale facility just eight miles west of On Top of the World. Tours are offered every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 10am and 6pm. These informative guided tours are handicap and elderly friendly with minimal walking and last from 1.5 to two hours. Guests cherish the opportunity to pet the horses, including multiple world champions, and take photos with them. Facility tours also feature two young Clydesdale colts recently imported from Europe. “These outstanding young horses are among the best we’ve seen in 20 years,” says Shannon. 26

Christmas tours run through January 9 at 6pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Tickets for both the “regular” facility tours and Christmas tours must be booked online to reserve your spot. Clydesdale Experience tours are $48 per person, and Christmas tours are $55 per person. Children under 2 are free.

MUST-SEE COMPETITIONS February brings draft horse-sized entertainment, the biggest in the state. The action kicks off on February 1-32024, with the 6th annual Grandview Invitational at the Florida Horse Park in Ocala. Showcasing some of the best draft horses and drivers in the world, the popular hitch classes are all performed to music. Spectator seats are under cover, and classes commence at 12pm each day. Tickets start at $20. The thrills continue February 8-10 with Grandview World Nights at World Equestrian Center in Ocala. Every day will feature a

championship six-horse hitch class where spectators can cheer on high-stepping Clydesdales, Belgians and Percherons in action. Competition takes place in a climatecontrolled indoor arena, beginning at 4pm daily, with ticket prices starting at $35. The vendor area opens at 11am with plenty of tantalizing shopping options. “You can get right up close to the horses at these two shows,” says Shannon. “These are the only two weeks of the whole year that Clydesdales are competing in Florida.” “Our tours run year-round, but seeing the Clydesdales and other draft horses compete is really special,” adds Karen. “We don’t want people to miss this opportunity!” GRANDVIEW CLYDESDALE TOURS 10020 SW 125th Court Rd, Dunnellon (260) 388-4279 grandviewclydesdales.tours grandviewinvitational.com grandviewworldnights.com

t just a few months old, Community Stages is still in its early development, but it’s already made quite an impact on the community. A theater arts organization that offers a variety of acting, singing, performance and even public speaking and communication classes, Community Stages is shaping up just how Terry envisioned—as an organization that creates a means of communicating entertaining and enlightening stories throughout the community. “When it comes to impactful storytelling, the magic lies within the tellers of the story,” says Terry. “We can touch lives, provide entertainment and stir social consciousness in all spaces—in a park or in a theater. That’s one of the meanings of community stages—theater for all the stages of life.” Currently, Community Stages classes are offered at Chelsea Arts Center, and performances are performed on stages throughout the area. Terry has collaborated with many arts and community organizations, including the Marion County Public Library, the Appleton Museum and Ocala Recreation and Parks, where they are planning to host a story walk at Scott Springs Park on April 13. “We will host three to five mini plays along the course of a walk around Scott Springs Park,” says Terry. “As the audience moves to a new station they will see a new story, some will be adaptations of international folklore you are familiar with, and others will be new stories you’ve never heard.” Community Stages offers skill-building opportunities, including a Family Playhouse

class for kids ages 5 to 9 with an accompanying adult, plus an audition-based performance class called the Trunk & Trek Troupe for kids 12-18 and homeschool classes for kids ages 8-11. Group classes, as well as one-on-one instruction are offered with Terry, who came to Ocala from New York where she acted and sang professionally for 15 years. Greg Doss serves as the organization’s music director and educator. As of right now, Community Stages offers two terms during the school year which average about 10 weeks of classes each. Auditions for the performance troupe for spring will be held January 4 and 11. Terry also has plans to add adult performance classes along the way. Students can register for classes and auditions online. “Developing theater skills through training

and practice strengthens the interpersonal skills of people of all ages,” says Terry. “Stronger verbal and nonverbal communication, creative problem solving, collaboration and cooperation build a person’s confidence and ability to lead. This lays the foundation for success to be built on in all professions. It’s wonderful to see my students over the years have successful performing arts careers. It’s equally rewarding to see them as educators, media specialists, lawyers and nurses. People of any age benefit from further developing these skills, and I delight in the creative development of everyone.” COMMUNITY STAGES (352) 707-8243 Communitystages.org facebook.com/CommunityStages

REPAIR & RESTORE THERAPEUTIC TREATMENTS OFFER LIFE-CHANGING BENEFITS.

W

hen a personal experience literally changes your life, you want to share it with others. That’s exactly what happened with Dr. Angelia Reddy. The Florida native, who was raised in Williston, has been a chiropractor in Ocala for nearly two decades. When intense pain became a part of her daily life in 2016, she desperately sought relief, starting with natural therapies first. When chiropractic, acupuncture, massage therapy, pelvic floor physical therapy and supplements didn’t relieve the pain, she sought conventional medical care and medication. “I even tried muscle relaxers and anti-anxiety meds, and nothing touched it,” says Dr. Reddy, who was at her wits end when, through her research, she found that cold laser therapy could help her condition. “That’s what saved my life and was the start of changing my practice,” she notes. Not only did the cold laser therapy break through her debilitating pain of over four months after just three days of treatment, but a month later, she was completely pain-free. Empowered by her own healing and recovery, Dr. Reddy immersed herself in research on laser therapy. Determined to help others find pain relief, she began incorporating it into her own practice. “I’m a chiropractor. My purpose and passion in life is to help people feel better and live healthier, more productive lives,” she says. “Now I have a full body red light bed and several types of cold lasers for treatment of specific areas enabling me to help those I was unsuccessful with before.” Just as Dr. Reddy’s personal experience

led her to offer the TheraLight Red light bed to patients, another transformative discovery opened a different door in her practice. “I have been on a journey my entire life and struggled with anorexia for many years,” admits Dr. Reddy. “I worked out daily, had a personal trainer for many years, but no matter how thin I was, nothing resolved my cellulite.” Frustrated, she tried procedures like cryo sculpting and Emsculpt, to name a few, but saw no change. “Like many chiropractors, I have a shockwave device that is very effective for musculoskeletal

pain. I learned that this was an extremely effective therapy used widely in Europe for the reduction of cellulite, so I decided to put it to the test,” she says. “I was my very first patient and started doing treatments on myself. I was extremely impressed and happy with the results. It has completely changed my life.” The remarkable truth about shockwave treatment is that it repairs and restores the unhealthy connective tissue, the foundation of the dermis and epidermis, which is the underlying cause of cellulite. “Not only do you see changes in how your body looks, but the muscles and fascia are heathier in form and function,” notes Dr. Reddy. “Shockwave treatment restores lymphatic

flow, releases fascial restriction, creates healthier connective tissue and vascular supply, and increases collagen and stem cell production,” she explains. Results from the cellulite treatment are longlasting (2-plus years), and there’s no down time. You can have a treatment and resume normal activities that same day. Red light therapy is also part of Dr. Reddy’s protocol, but it’s the hands-on application of the shockwave therapy that brings about the repair under the skin. Treatment times vary depending on the area of the body treated and generally range from 30 to 60 minutes. “A good portion of patients will see changes

with the first treatment. More severe, grade 3 cellulite will require several treatments to see a change,” says Dr. Reddy. Coming soon, she will be using Styku 3D full body scans, providing DEXA-quality body composition and measurements with extreme accuracy and reliability (R2 0.99), to document the positive changes. Men who have good muscle tone and work out regularly may still battle that little layer of stubborn fat on the stomach. “Especially with age, this can be harder to reduce, so men can see the benefits of the treatment as well,” says Dr. Reddy. In addition to the hips, thighs and stomach, patients receiving shockwave treatments of the face experience a lifting effect, softening of fine lines and wrinkles and healthier skin. While every treatment offered at Dr. Reddy’s office can stand alone, she’s found that utilizing a combination of therapies can enhance overall results, including improved physical function, better mood, and more energy. “Here at the Cell-U-Light Therapy Center, we’re addressing the body on a structural physical level, but with red light therapy we can further help the body heal at the cellular level,” says Dr. Reddy. “It’s not just for someone with cellulite and a little fat they want to lose. This is for anyone—female and male—who wants to feel better and function optimally.”

t’s no surprise that horses are the reason many people relocate to Ocala/ Marion County. From breeding and showing to pleasure riding, race training and sales, the equine industry here is multifaceted and booming. Some residents are Florida natives or have lived in this area for decades and built their lives around horses—for both business and hobby. And then there are the many new faces moving to Marion County who are just discovering the “horsey” side of life. With that in mind, we’ve rounded up some equestrian-focused adventures both close to home and within a couple hours’ drive. Whether you ride regularly and have your own horse or just want to experience time with horses up close and personal, there are options for everyone. Read on to find an adventure or two, and let the memory-making begin.

meet a magical breed

You don’t have to own horses or know anything about them to enjoy a tour at Gypsy Gold Horse Farm in Ocala. If you are a horse person, however, you’ll appreciate the story behind the Gypsy Vanner breed. Gypsy Vanner horses have a big fan base in the United States, and it all started when Dennis Thompson of Ocala and his late wife, Cindy, took a trip to England in 1995. During their travels, they discovered these colorful, personable horses and the fascinating Gypsy culture that envisioned and created them. They returned to the States with a plan: introduce these intriguing horses to America. Dedicated Gypsy breeders in England chose the name Gypsy Vanner horse over Romany horse, and on November 24, 1996, the Thompsons established the Gypsy Vanner Horse Society, the world’s first when staying at registry for a breed golden acres, you of horse developed have private access by Irish and British right onto the Gypsies. greenway. the trail The breed was system is divided officially introduced into east and west, in June 1998 at with i-75 being the Equitana USA in dividing line. Louisville, Kentucky, and on the internet at gypsyvannerhorse.com. Today there are over 12,000 Vanner horses registered in America. The Thompsons imported the first 16 Gypsy Vanner horses to the United States beginning in November 1996. Among these was the Gypsy King, a stunning black and white stallion who became a foundation sire for the breed. His

striking looks and personality made the Gypsy King a “poster horse” for the breed. Breyer even made a model of him in 2001. (Cindy was able to enjoy all these accomplishments before her passing in 2002.) Gypsy Gold Horse Farm, which is home to over three dozen Gypsy Vanners, hosts two popular tours that are the perfect introduction to this enchanting breed. Tours appeal to both horse people and those who don’t consider themselves equestrians. “We have women bring their husbands and think they’re going to be bored, and they love it. The longer tour is very historical, and you learn about a culture you didn’t know about,” says Dennis of the Horses & History Tour. “Every horse on the farm is an ancestor of the original horses we brought to the country, starting in 1996. The latest foals born on the farm are fifth generation Gypsy Vanners,” adds Dennis, noting that the farm is the home of the winningest Gypsy Vanner stallion and mare in history. The Horses & History Tour is two hours long. If your group includes young children, you may want to opt for the one-hour Walking Farm Tour. In both tours, you’ll have the opportunity to meet the farm’s stallions, mares and foals, as well as other beloved farm residents—including donkeys and parrots. Tours are conducted by Dennis and his wife, Erin Thompson. Tours take place on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Book your tour online, and feel free to bring carrots for the horses when you visit.

ride the greenway

Since 2007, Golden Acres Foxtrotter Ranch Rest N’ Ride has been a favorite place to camp and ride the expansive Marjorie Harris Carr Cross Florida Greenway. Horse owners come from across Florida and out of state, as well as the Ocala area, to ride here. The Greenway features 110 miles of trails—40 of which are devoted strictly to equestrian use. When staying at Golden Acres, you have private access right onto the Greenway. The trail system is divided into East and West, with I-75 being the dividing line. You can access both sides from the ranch, and the terrain varies significantly, depending on which trails you take. Hunting is not allowed on the Greenway, so you never have to worry about riding during hunting season. JAN ‘24

Trails are clearly marked with separate trails for mountain bikers, equestrians and hikers. The only time you have to be aware of hikers or bicyclists is where trails intersect. “We’re located at the Land Bridge, which is on a lot of people’s bucket lists to ride,” says ranch owner Peggy Litt. “This is our 16th year of offering the Rest N’ Ride for campers and trail riders.” The Land Bridge Trail is so named because you actually ride over a bridge that spans the interstate, safely above the traffic on I-75 below. Peggy offers maps of the Greenway trails, and you can also learn more about the trail system at floridastateparks.org/crossflorida. Golden Acres has eight 30-amp electric hook-ups and two 110-amp electric hook-ups, which come with fresh water. Guests also have the use of the barn’s restroom facilities, shower and mini kitchen. Stabling options include 12 individual turnout pens and a four-stall barn available for a modest nightly fee per horse. Each is equipped with automatic waterers. You can tie up and wash your horse after riding at the barn wash racks. Dogs on a leash are allowed; just pick up after them. To reserve a camping spot and stabling for your horse, call ahead and ask for Peggy. There

The farm is pet friendly, and three of the lodgings allow pets, so some guests bring their dogs. For those bringing their own horse, both stall and pasture board are available. If you don’t have a horse, or you’re coming with a friend who needs a mount, the farm has 13 horses available for riding. “We have Lusitanos, draft horses, quarter horses, Paints and a miniature horse that are all part of our riding program for guests to enjoy,” says Jami.
