AUTHENTIC FLORIDA FUN THE FLORIDA MAN GAMES BRING BIZARRE STORIES TO LIFE.

T

he zaniest, most hilarious aspects of Florida culture will be on full display at The Florida Man Games, a one-of-a-kind spectacle coming to Francis Field in St. Augustine. Mark your calendars for Saturday, February 24, buy your tickets and prepare to spend the entire day with a grin on your face. Founder Pete Melfi has worked in TV and radio since 2011 and covered countless weird “Florida Man” stories during that time. Although it’s up for debate as to how the phenomenon originated, these crazy, true stories really caught fire in 2016. “I looked for common themes in the best Florida Man stories,” laughs Pete, recounting his inspiration for the event. “There may or may not have been alcohol involved.” After coming up with the idea, he scoured the internet, thinking someone had to have done something similar, but no. Pete took the idea and ran with it. The result is the inaugural 20

WRITTEN BY CYNTHIA MCFARLAND Florida Man Games. “We’re projecting 5,000 to 10,000 spectators at this point,” says Pete. “We have people attending from all over the world—London, Australia, Alaska. It’s become an international event.” At press time, there are 16 teams of three to five people (male and female) entered. All contestants must be from Florida, and residency will be verified. Games include Weaponized Pool Noodle Mud Duel, Evading Arrest Obstacle Course, Category 5 Cash Grab, Florida Sumo and a bizarre race that involves a catalytic converter, two bikes and a handful of copper pipes. The Evading Arrest game features actual Florida Sheriff Deputies chasing the competitors through an obstacle course. The event is hosted by Omgitswicks, native Floridian and hugely popular Instagram influencer and Tik Tok star. Judges Dan “Nitro” Clark and Lori “Ice” Fetrick are both former

American Gladiator contestants. The overall champion takes home a Florida Man Games championship belt, wooden Florida flag trophy and a$5,000 cash prize. There’s also a mullet competition with contestants entered from all over the state, and the Florida Ma’am Pinup contest will be judged by Christina Wilson of Discovery TV and Brave Wilderness. “Sanity is optional. My goal is for people to come out and laugh all day long,” says Pete. Team registration ended in November, but spectators can participate in challenges with a definite Florida Man vibe, including jousting and riding a mechanical alligator. THE FLORIDA MAN GAMES FEBRUARY 24 Francis Field is located at 25 West Castillo Drive in St. Augustine. Buy tickets and learn more at thefloridamangames.com.

J

oey and Jessica Dossantos have always had a love of fitness and health. Joey holds a black belt in Taekwondo and has also trained in muay thai and kickboxing. Jessica has a background in physical therapy. Together they have created a culture of acceptance and hard work at Ocala Boxing Academy. “We want to take the stigma out of boxing,” says Jessica. “Some people may be intimidated to come and workout; they think of boxing as getting punched in the face and getting hurt. But the culture we’ve built is very family oriented, and it’s a lot of fun.” Plus, boxing is about way more than throwing punches. “Boxing is great for coordination, teaches us to pay attention to other people’s body language and helps build confidence,” says Jessica. “People who have boxing experience are actually less likely to find themselves in a conflict. Plus, it’s great for cardiovascular health and lean muscle mass.” At the 8,000-square-foot facility, both group and one-on-one training is available. The Ocala Boxing Academy offers two age groups for kids with 5 to 9 year olds working on agility movements, behaviors, footwork, beginning boxing and workouts in a class setting. The older kids, ages 10 to 15, cover the same material but a bit more aggressively than their younger counterparts. “The younger kids are a bit like puppies,” 26

smiles Jessica. “They have to grow into their movements and have fun, too. As kids get older, the basic behaviors aren’t quite an issue. Eventually, some will transition to the fight team and become competitive.” All boxing and MMA programs (which center on grappling, how to strike and kick, and takedowns) offer optional sparring as well. Jessica points out that nobody gets into the ring until they are ready for it. Adult programs currently offered include the popular fitness boxing, which incorporates light weights, strength training and boxing, plus beginner through advanced boxing classes. “All of our classes involve conditioning and a cardio-based warm-up,” says Jessica. “And we cover all angles of boxing—mentally and physically.” Roughly 170 members strong, Jessica and Joey credit their coaches and volunteers for helping their academy grow. “Coach Rod facilitated and implemented training programs for over 20 years for the U.S. Armed Forces and civilians alike,” says Jessica. “He is a stoic, retired Marine who has helped military recruits train. Coach John has been with

us since the very beginning. He volunteered the first year and loves working with the kids—he really sees potential and invests in them. He was a successful hockey player and a professional boxer. Coach Patrick is a professional MMA fighter who specializes in Ju Jitsu. My dad, Coach JC, offers private personal training and boxing opportunities. He was a golden glove back in his day, and he takes boxers under his wing and trains them for competition.” Ocala Boxing Academy also partners with Endeavor, which sponsors young fighters by getting them off the streets, providing training and allowing them to follow their dreams. “This is about people being able to better themselves,” says Jessica. “This is like a ministry for us. We come across so many different scenarios with both kids and adults. To see them change from a lack of confidence or physical ability to having that confidence and being healthier is so satisfying.” OCALA BOXING ACADEMY 1032 SW 1st Ave, Ocala (352) 300-8843 ocalaboxingacademy.com

INTO THE WOODS & BEYOND SHE CAN ADVENTURE LEADS THE WAY FOR THE WOMEN OF CENTRAL FLORIDA. WRITTEN BY CYNTHIA MCFARLAND

C

amping, hiking, kayaking and other outdoor activities feel natural if you grew up doing them, but many women never had that opportunity as girls. That’s where She Can Adventure steps in. Specifically targeting women, this womanowned organization was founded by Crystal Batlle in early 2019. A lifelong outdoor enthusiast, Crystal was part of a women’s hiking club but also loved to camp and do other activities. Her two daughters, now 5 and 7, have been part of her hikes since she toted them along from the age of 6 weeks old. She launched She Can Adventure with them in mind. “It became my goal to create a community for women to feel secure and safe enough to explore the outdoors,” says Crystal, a Florida native from Deltona. “The goal is to make this a 501(C)(3) organization. My dream is to see this go global.” 32

352PREVIEW.COM

She Can Adventure allows women and girls aged 12 and up to experience a variety of outdoor activities. No membership is needed. You can just buy tickets to the events that interest you. The next camp out series takes place April 12-14 at Buck Lake in the Ocala National Forest. The women-only weekend features tent camping, meals cooked over the campfire, guided hikes, selfdefense classes hosted by Warrior Forged/Mean Girls Project owner Leslie Steinmann, meditation under the stars and much more. Day passes are available for those who want to participate without staying overnight. “Most of the women come by themselves and meet their new best friends there,” says Crystal. “We’re always trying to encourage the next generation of outdoor women.” Because of Florida summers, campouts are scheduled fall through spring. She Can Adventure offers other events throughout the year.

These vary and include guided hikes, kayaking, orienteering, book club and more. Group chats on Facebook and WhatsApp help women stay in touch between events. Some activities are more adventurous than others. For example, next January, the group will do a 106-mile bike trip from Key Largo to Key West on the Overseas National Scenic Highway Trail. The organization has hosted two summits featuring a great lineup of speakers covering a wide range of outdoor adventures. Among those speakers was National Geographic 2019 Adventurer of the Year, Heather “Anish” Anderson, who hiked 8,000 miles in one year. If you’re a woman of any age craving more outdoor in your life, She Can Adventure may be just what you need. For more information and to sign up for events, visit shecanadventure.com.

ay-to-day life, stress and aging all take a toll on your body. Whether you’re dealing with aches and pains, a job that keeps you at a desk, strenuous athletic activities or a demanding schedule that creates both physical and mental stress, one-on-one assisted stretching can provide you with vital relief and both immediate and long-term solutions. Stretching is a necessity for range of motion, flexibility and preventing imbalances that can cause issues like back pain and impingements. Get Stretch’d, Ocala’s premier stretching studio located in Churchill Square Shopping Center, next to Publix, can address those issues and get you feeling your best. If you’d like to see a quick YouTube video of an assisted stretch demo, scan the QR code below. I CAN STRETCH MYSELF. WHY DO I NEED ASSISTED STRETCHING? Assisted stretching allows your body to relax and push past your body’s normal range of motion that is halted by your stretch reflex. Our skilled stretch professionals provide active dynamic stretching with added resistance that will give you a deeper stretch with maximum benefits. You’ll experience isolated stretches that target specific muscle groups needed to give you relief.

HOW IS PRACTITIONER-ASSISTED STRETCHING DIFFERENT FROM MASSAGE? Stretching is practically painless, and stretching is a necessity for everyone. When you elongate your connective tissues, you increase flexibility, mitigate pain and improve your overall body health.

DOES STRETCHING HELP WITH SCIATICA OR OTHER PAIN? Yes, stretching can alleviate or eliminate pain from head to toe, including sciatica, plantar fasciitis and lower back, hip and knee pain. It’s February, and Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching. If you’re looking for something a bit different to do with your special someone, we have a few suggestions that just might earn you a bonus point or two. Written By Karin Fabry-Cushenbery

An Artful Evening

You’ve lived in Ocala most of your life, but when’s the last time you checked out the Appleton Museum of Art or took in a play at the Ocala Civic Theatre? If you can’t recall, we say now’s the time to make it happen. This perfect afternoon or evening out is sure to spark interesting conversation and unique entertainment. The Appleton has several exhibits on display (in addition to the museum’s permanent collection), including Karen Glaser: Swamps and Springs, which opens on February 10. Karen’s beautiful photographs detail images of Florida’s ecosystems from both above and below the water’s surface. Also check out Outsider Aviary: Robert W. Smeltzer’s Birds of America, an exhibit of Smelter’s hand-carved, lifesized birds. A bird lover and self-taught woodworker, Smelter created 242 carvings of birds, which were donated to the Appleton in 1993. After your trip to the Appleton, head across Silver Springs Boulevard for lunch or dinner at Mojo’s, an Ocala favorite. Then, head back to the cultural complex to enjoy a show at the Ocala Civic Theatre. The Spitfire Grill, a story about Percy Talbott, a young woman recently released from prison and looking to make a fresh start in a small Wisconsin town, will be on stage between February 8 and 25. For more information, including tickets and details, visit appletonmuseum.org and ocalacivictheatre.com.

The tour costs $65 per person, and you can reserve your spot on

farmtoursofocala.com. Just off Hwy 27 you’ll find Horse & Hounds Restaurant & Pub, the perfect lunch or dinner location following your equestrian experience. Start your dinner off right with the Tomato Bacon Dill soup, a family recipe and Horse & Hounds tradition. Adventure Awaits If you and your sweetie are the adventurous sort, why not spend the day at The Canyons Zip Line & Adventure Park. If you haven’t been yet, we promise you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to a mountain community, complete with rock formations and elevation changes. The Canyons offers other cool adventure outings, including the Horseback Ride Fireside and the Full Moon Zip Tours. Billed as the ultimate horse encounter, the Fireside Ride begins with a meet and treat with your horse where you’ll get to know one another and take pictures. The ride is a moonlit outing through Big Cliff Canyon, eventually gathering at the Fireside Hideaway where you can enjoy a glass of wine, s’mores and friendly conversation. The tour takes place once per month during the full moon and lasts about two hours. If you’re looking for a more heart-pounding time, the nighttime zip is certain to get your blood pumping. Also taking place on the full moon, this nighttime excursion takes you through five zips and two sky bridges. Glow sticks will help light your way as you and your partner navigate through the trees. The night zip takes about 1.5 hours to complete. The Canyons also offers daytime zip tours as well as scenic kayak tours where you can paddle through Big Cliff Canyon in Lost Spring Lake. Reservations for all of these adventures fill up fast, so reserve your spot today by registering online at zipthecanyons.com.

A short drive south of Ocala you’ll arrive in the quaint town of Clermont, where you’ll find Lakeridge Winery, one of Central Florida’s most visited wineries. Guided tours of the winery and complimentary tastings are offered seven days a week between the hours of 10am and 4pm. Your tour will include a history of Florida winemaking as well as the winemaking process. The tour lasts about 45 minutes and is followed by a wine tasting that features some of the winery’s top wines, including sweet, dry and even sparkling selections, plus beautiful views of Lakeridge’s muscadine grape vineyards. Situated on about 75 acres of rolling property, the vineyard is the perfect place to unwind, relax and enjoy conversation. More details can be found at lakeridgewinery.com.

When the tour is over, make your way to The Southern on 8th Kitchen & Bar for brunch or supper. We love the country pork cordon bleu and herb-crusted garden chicken. They also have seasonal and seafood specials available. The Southern offers a weekend brunch from 11am until 3pm, which features a great variety of sandwiches, soups, starters and savory and sweet Southern brunch items. It’s nearly impossible to choose a favorite, but we loved the peach stuffed cornflake coated French toast. Yum! Happy Hour is weekdays from 4-6pm and weekends from 3-6pm. Dinner is served Tuesday through Thursday, 4-9pm; Friday, 4-11pm; Saturday, 4-10pm; and Sunday, 4-9pm. The kitchen closes at 10pm. You can peruse the menu at thesouthernon8th.com.

Drive-In Nostalgia

If seeing a movie is your idea of a great date, why not switch it up a bit and head out to the Ocala Drive-In? In operation since 1948, the Ocala DriveIn is one of just a few hundred drive-ins still in operation in the United States. Drive-ins had their heyday in the ‘50s and ‘60s, but the nostalgia and value factors have people flocking to them once again. Gone are the days of listening to scratchy audio through an outside speaker. These days, most drive-ins, including Ocala’s, are digital, and the sound is transmitted to the vehicle via an FM radio station. The weather is perfect to take a set of chairs and a blanket to share, open the back of the car and set up outside. The theater offers two screens, and your ticket is good for a double-header playing first-run movies on the same screen. The first movie starts at dark, and the second movie follows shortly after. Outside food and drink aren’t permitted, but that shouldn’t be a problem. The concession stand has a great menu that goes beyond the basic burgers and hot dogs, and all food is made to order, including the New Orleans-style muffuletta sandwich and poboys. And on top of it all, you can’t beat the price at just $6 per adult, $3 for kids ages 6 to 12 and free for ages 5 and under. Of course, for the purposes of this story, a babysitter will be in order! You can check the drive-in’s Facebook page or visit ocaladrivein.info to get the latest showtimes.

Have you been out to explore the World Equestrian Center yet? If not, February is the perfect time to schedule your WEC date. The month of February features the 2024 Winter Spectacular Show Series, which is sanctioned by U.S. Equestrian. This circuit features Premier Hunter/Level 6 Jumper competitions, plus five weeks of Federation Equestre International competition. The winter circuit continues through March 10 and culminates with the grand finale of the Longines League of Nations qualifying event March 20 through 24. The competitions take place in both indoor and outdoor arenas at the facility between 8am and 4pm. While at WEC, treat yourself to a unique or fine dining experience. The largest restaurant, Stirrups, is located at the Equestrian Hotel and features prime steak and chop options, plus Southern-style seasonal dishes, Florida seafood and more. Filo’s Mexican Cantina serves street tacos, burritos, quesadillas and more all day long, including breakfast. Ralph’s Burger & Sandwich Shop serves up classic burgers, salads and sandwiches with a few upgraded flavors thrown in for good measure. Make sure to try a homemade

milkshake at Ralph’s! If you’re craving Italian, Viola & Dot’s Italian Kitchen & Pizzeria is the way to go, while the Yellow Pony Pub & Garden offers live music and a pub-style atmosphere, including appetizers to share and craft cocktails. Your date wouldn’t be complete without a sweet for your sweet, so be sure to stop in at Emma’s Patisserie for French macarons, European-inspired pastries and other elegant treats. Miss Tilly’s Lollipops is a classic sweet shop offering everything from yummy ice cream and homemade fudge to chocolates and other confections. See all WEC has to offer at worldequestriancenter.com/ocala-fl. If you really want to indulge in all WEC has to offer, book a staycation at the Equestrian Hotel, Ocala’s only AAA FourDiamond resort, and pamper yourself for the evening, walking around the facility amongst the glow of nighttime lights and twinkling stars. Opt for a curated experience and enjoy breakfast in bed. Or, book a memorable spa experience, such as a couple’s massage, at the Calluna Spa, a 7,000-square-foot facility designed to pamper and indulge. Visit equestrianhotel.com to book your stay or learn more.

St. Augustine is far more than the fountain of youth and the oldest schoolhouse. The cobblestone streets, rich architecture and seaside atmosphere make it perfect for a romantic night or, better yet, weekend away. Let your weekend start with checking in to The Local St. Augustine. This charming pink boutique hotel is modern yet eclectic at the same time. A relaxing pool and patio area are gently lit by overhead string lights, and the facility offers guests a variety of complimentary health offerings, including steam rooms and yoga classes. Voted “No. 1 Motel in the U.S. by USA Today’s 10 Best,” The Local, located on Anastasia Island near the Bridge of Lions, is within walking distance to many of St. Augustine’s historical sights, natural recreation areas, music venues, restaurants and more. Plus, it’s just a five-minute drive to St. Augustine Beach. Book your stay at thelocalinns.com. When you’re this close to the Atlantic, fresh seafood should be the plan for dinner. The Local is walking distance to the Conch House where you’ll find authentic Caribbean faire and signature dishes, such as the Minorcan conch chowder soup, banana pepper calamari, butter rum scallops, shrimp Anastasia and more. Make it a point to stop at The Tipsy Duck Parlor, which specializes in signature parlor drinks humorously called Ducktails. Each drink features a type of wine accompanied by a variety of fruit, syrups or more. The Tipsy Duck, served blended in a fun bathtub, includes sauvignon blanc, strawberries, fresh basil and rose syrup. Another favorite is the Fizzy Duck with chardonnay, vanilla bean syrup and pineapple juice served over dry ice. If you really want to step up your romance game, book a private carriage ride with The Tasting Tours. Guests can choose a private wine or dessert ride, plus other offerings. THIS ONE’S FOR THE GIRLS GATHER UP YOUR GIRLFRIENDS. IT’S TIME FOR OUR FAVORITE HOLIDAY OF THE YEAR: GALENTINE’S DAY.

W

WRITTEN BY MELISSA PETERSON

hether you’re single and looking to avoid the hearts and chocolates all together this year or you just want an excuse to spend a couple of hours catching up with your gal pals, we’re ready to help you throw the ultimate Galentine’s Day party this month.

CHOOSE AN OUTFIT THEME. Whether you

WHAT TO DO: PICK A THEME

ORGANIZE A SECRET CUPID GIFT EXCHANGE.

PLAN AN ACTIVITY. Hire a professional for a night of massages, mani-pedis or makeovers. Have a guided paint-a-picture night. (There are some great instructor-led videos on YouTube.) Sing karaoke. Watch a chick flick. Play a game. (We suggest Never Have I Ever or Truth or Dare.) Whatever you do, you’re sure to have a good time if you come with a sense of humor (and possibly a stiff drink).

In traditional “Secret Santa” style, choose names beforehand and have everyone bring a gift for their person. Even better, choose a theme: a bottle of wine, your favorite beauty product, a candle and comfy blanket, the best book you’ve read this year. Whatever it is, set a budget so everyone knows what to expect.

HAND OUT GALENTINE’S DAY CARDS. You could go with the traditional childhood boxed cards or even make your own. A fun activity for the evening would be to supply blank cards and craft supplies so everyone can make cards to exchange with one another.

Of course there’s going to be yummy food, the perfect music playlist and plentiful drinks, but what are you actually going to do at this party? No one wants to host a party where everyone’s bored—especially if the gossip stops flowing. Here are a few cute ideas to make sure everyone’s feelin’ the love. 42

WHAT TO DRINK: PUNCH IT UP Whether your gang’s looking for a mocktail or a cocktail, here are two recipes that will satisfy all preferences.

CRANBERRY RASPBERRY VANILLA PUNCH

WHAT TO EAT: BRING A BOARD A charcuterie board that is—and you don’t have to stick with the traditional meats and cheeses. We’re giving you and your pals permission to think outside the box. One of our favorite party food trends is the “everyone brings a board” new twist on potlucks. And we think your Galentine’s Day party is the perfect chance to really indulge in some fun options. Here are some of our favorite—and most unique—boards that will really liven up your party spread.

FRUITS AND VEGGIES. Choose options that complete all colors of the rainbow and can be paired with a yummy dip.

CARAMEL APPLES. Along with the caramel and apples, you’ll want all the toppings, like a variety of nuts, chocolate chips, granola and marshmallows. S’MORES. Pre-melt the marshmallows, and pack it with chocolates and graham crackers, but also don’t forget some other s’mores-flavored treats, 44

352PREVIEW.COM

like cookies. Also, pro tip: S’mores are great with peanut butter cups.

SALSA AND QUESO. White cheddar queso, chunky salsa with all the veggies and creamy guac is a sure bet. Pair it with all the chips needed to scoop up a mouthful.

IN A LARGE PUNCH BOWL, ADD JUICE, GINGER ALE AND VANILLA EXTRACT. STIR UNTIL COMBINED. ADD FROZEN CRANBERRIES AND SCOOPS OF FROZEN SORBET. STIR SLIGHTLY, AND THEN SERVE IMMEDIATELY.

DONUTS. Donut holes, powdered donuts, glazed and cream filled—everyone loves donuts. Make sure you get some ultra unsensible sprinkles, too.

CANDY. Twizzlers, ring pops, Fun Dip, gummy bears, loads and loads of chocolate, the options are unlimited. BAKED POTATOES. This one is the perfect option for something a little heavier. Cook the potatoes in advance, slice them open and then supply all the toppings for the perfect loaded baked potato. CHICKEN WINGS AND NUGGETS. Honey garlic and everyone’s favorite mild are definitely crowd pleasers in the wing department. For the nuggets, Chick-fil-A offers a large platter, and don’t forget the dipping sauces.

TACOS. Crunchy shells, flour tortillas, lots of cheese and toppings, options for beef or chicken tacos—you can’t go wrong with tacos. PIZZA. Order a few pizzas, or make your own at home. Don’t forget the cheesy bread, breadsticks and garlic knots as well as butter garlic and marinara dipping sauces.

CREATE PERSONALIZED GOODIE BAGS. What’s a party if everyone doesn’t leave with a fabulous favor? Because you’re the host, you can choose a small, unique gift that’s perfect for each of your guests. Another idea is to invite your guests to stuff a goodie bag full of their favorite things, and then guests can choose one randomly before leaving for the night. This can be done in place of a gift exchange. Let your guests know the size of the bags and the price point, so they can plan what to bring in advance.
