A PORCH PARTY

CELEBRATING SIX YEARS AND MORE THAN $80,000 DONATED TO THE ARTS, THE SANFORD PORCHFEST IS READY FOR ANOTHER YEAR OF LIVE MUSIC AND COMMUNITY FUN.

Welcome to Central Florida, where the streets come alive with a vibrant mix of art, music and community. Every year, the charming downtown area of Sanford plays host to the Sanford Porchfest, celebrating creativity and togetherness. This event brings residents, musicians and artists together for a day of fun and entertainment that showcases the area’s unique character. Sanford Porchfest is a must-see event for anyone looking to experience the best of Central Florida.

The Sanford Porchfest o ers a one-of-akind experience where the community opens their homes and turns their porches, yards and driveways into stages for live music performances. Imagine strolling through the downtown area, hopping from porch to porch, chowing down on food by local vendors and listening to a diverse lineup of local talent. It’s an interactive and immersive atmosphere that will make you feel like you’re a part of the community. Attendees will enjoy an intimate concert experience as they explore the area, discovering the unique sounds of the local music scene.

One of the highlights of Sanford Porchfest is the wide range of musical genres represented at the event. From folk and rock to blues and jazz, there is something for everyone to enjoy. It’s a perfect opportunity to discover new artists and appreciate the di erent styles of music being performed. But the festival doesn’t stop with music. It also includes a showcase of local artists’ works, providing a platform for them to display their talents and connect with the audience.

The atmosphere at the event is welcoming and inclusive, making it perfect for families (including their pets!), friends and neighbors to come together and enjoy a day of entertainment. The free-entry aspect of the event makes it accessible for all; although, donations are appreciated.

This year, Ocala’s Feverdreams and Glizzy Gillespie will perform at the Sanford Porchfest. A dynamic duo, Glizzy Gillespie shared their excitement about being a part of the festival and the opportunity to support the local creative community.

“We’re thrilled to be a part of such a fantastic event, with so many talented bands,

in the historic and picturesque downtown area of Sanford,” says Taylor Schoenborn, a member of Glizzy Gillespie. “We’re grateful for the opportunity to perform alongside over 70 other bands and connect with such a supportive community. As a relatively new band, having the chance to play in front of an audience of 15,000 people is a huge opportunity for us.”

The event will feature an incredible lineup of bands performing within walkable distances in the neighborhood. The event also aims to enhance access to and promote the arts through educational scholarships. All of the proceeds from the festival are returned to the community in the form of performing art summer camp tuition for select children.

This year, Sanford Porchfest will take place on February 25 and begins at 11am. Porch performances happen from noon to 6:15pm, and the closing performance in Centennial Park happens from 6:45-7:45pm. Find out more about the Sanford Porchfest at sanfordporchfest.org and stay up to date via Facebook and Instagram.

CELEBRATION OF ART

NOW IN ITS 15TH YEAR, THIS MCA’S APPLAUD THE ARTS EVENT CONTINUES TO HONOR CULTURAL GRANT AND ARTS AWARD RECIPIENTS.

Marion County is grateful for the Marion Cultural Alliance (MCA). To date, MCA has given over $1.5 million to the arts and local arts organizations. Even more money was recently raised at MCA’s 15th Annual Applaud the Arts event held in the NOMA Black Box at the Reilly Arts Center. You know the party is a success when the VIP tickets sell out in advance!

The theme of the party was “A Whimsical Wonderland” inspired by Alice in Wonderland. Guests followed the white rabbit to the dance oor, and the party lasted late into the night. MCA’s night of fun was presented by Robert Boissoneault Oncology Institute as well as Urology Institute of Central Florida. Tapas dishes were catered by La Casella, and there were delicious specialty cocktails. The evening was a celebration of cultural grant and arts awards recipients. The attire was cocktail dress; although, some wore themed costumes. Many guests agreed with the Mad Hatter when he stated, “The secret, dear Alice, is to surround yourself with people who make your heart smile. It is then, only then, that you will nd wonderland.”

The mission of MCA is to champion, convene and create opportunities for artists and art organizations. Executive Director of MCA Jaye Sterchi Baillie should be congratulated on a successful fundraising event. MCA is a nonpro t organization that was established in 2001 with its inaugural o ering of the Horse Fever public art project. Horse Fever has had a lasting impact on Ocala/Marion County. MCA has numerous endowments and operates the Brick City Center for the Arts in downtown Ocala.

The wealth of a community is often judged by its arts community. On that basis, Ocala/Marion County should be judged as very successful, and MCA is one of the main reasons. To make a much-appreciated contribution, see the organization’s Facebook page or visit mcaocala.org.

FIRST-CLASS BANKING AT ITS BEST

LASTING RELATIONSHIPS AND A COMMUNITY HEART MAKES THE DIFFERENCE AT MAINSTREET COMMUNITY BANK.

If your banking experience doesn’t include being greeted by name, you’re de nitely not a customer of Mainstreet Community Bank in Ocala.

Since the rst Mainstreet Community Bank of Florida opened its doors in October 2003, the prevailing mission has been to provide essential services with authentic customer service and familiarity that builds trust.

market,” says Tom Ingram, CEO of Mainstreet Community Bank in Ocala. “The city made it easy and was great to work with; lots of incredible things are happening downtown.”

Manager for the City of Ocala.

“Repurposing and redevelopment of the building at 112 North Magnolia are exactly what the Midtown Masterplan contemplated when it was completed in 2017,” adds Lee.

For the entire team at Mainstreet Community Bank in Ocala, meeting customer needs is job No. 1.

CLOSE TO HOME

Located in the heart of Ocala, “Mainstreet” is certainly an appropriate moniker.

“We chose Midtown Ocala because we wanted to be a catalyst for growth in the downtown

The Ocala market opened in June 2019 in a temporary downtown location until renovations were completed on the building they bought at 112 North Magnolia Avenue. This location is rich in local history and was originally built in 1926 as a Studebaker dealership.

“I view Mainstreet Community Bank as a Midtown pioneer. The impact that Mainstreet has made cannot be overlooked. The bank is an awesome addition,” says Peter Lee, City

“This bank is an early participant in what we envision as a Midtown Renaissance that will continue into the near future, returning Midtown to a vital, active part of our downtown. This project is integral—a stepping stone, if you will—to the future success of downtown Ocala and, speci cally, Midtown.”

LOCAL DECISION MAKING

Knowing customers and being attentive to their individual needs is just part of what

TOM

makes this locally owned and locally operated bank different from other area options.

“We know our customers by name; they’re not just a number,” says Ingram. “If we don’t know someone, we make it a point to get to know them. It’s very personalized. All of our officers are available by cell phone 24/7.”

A crucial difference that sets the bank apart is the ability to make decisions locally.

“All decisions are made within our bank with an experienced banking team that has worked together for decades,” says Ingram.

“Our focus is on every single customer interaction. We work very, very hard not to say ‘no.’ If it’s legally, morally or ethically correct, we figure out a way to say ‘yes,’ If

we don’t have the exact ‘yes,’ we try to find alternative solutions,” says Angie Clifton, area president and senior vice president of Mainstreet Community Bank Ocala.

“When banks were closing down during Covid, we remained open for our customers. We figured out a way to overcome Covid and take care of our customers. What 36 years of banking have taught me is that one thing customers don’t need is to worry about getting access to their money,” notes Clifton.

In addition to its convenient Midtown location, drive-through and advanced technology drive-up ATM, the bank offers free county-wide courier service.

“We bring the bank to you for deposit gatherings and loan closings,” says Ingram.

LASTING RELATIONSHIPS

Tom Ingram was a champion water skier long before he became a first-class banker. The Florida native attended Florida Southern University specifically to ski. After winning two national titles, he performed with the Sea World ski team from 1978 to 1984.

Following a bad jump crash at Sea World, Ingram took a job as a teller while on the mend.

“I quickly found that, if you worked hard, there was always an opportunity to progress,” says Ingram, who started with SouthTrust Bank in 1988. By 1995, he was promoted to bank president.

Determined to make an impact with local banking, Ingram started Florida Bank in Ocala in 2000. He sold it in 2005 and started Gateway Bank in 2007.

Some time after selling Gateway Bank

in 2016, he met with Ben Flowers, CEO of Mainstreet Community Bank of Florida. The two men had remained close friends since both worked for SouthTrust decades earlier.

They decided a Mainstreet Community Bank in Ocala was exactly what the town needed. Ingram reached out to Clifton, and she came on board. Both Ingram and Clifton bought stock in the company. Ownership in the bank makes the focus of customer service even more personal.

and intensive community commitment.

Born and raised in Ocala, Angie Clifton started her banking career right after graduating from the University of Florida in August 1988.

“I was hired by SouthTrust Bank in October 1988,” recalls Clifton, who started as a parttime bookkeeper and eventually worked her way through every single position in the bank. She was regional bank director for Florida for 17 years.

As Ingram notes, the appeal of local banking as opposed to corporate banking includes the strong ties to the community with local decision making, local ownership

“Tom Ingram hired me at SouthTrust and promoted me to the branch manager position, so he’s the person who started me in banking 36 years ago,” says Clifton. “He became my mentor, my friend and my boss. He took me under his wing and taught me how to be a banker and a leader in

the community.”

The banking team at Mainstreet Community Bank in Ocala works seamlessly together as a result of decades-long connections between core members.

For example, Raymond Andrews, residential mortgage originator, has worked with Ingram since the mid-1990s.

Felecia Judge, director of marketing, has known Ingram and Clifton since their early days at SouthTrust. Joe Vorwerk, commercial

lender, has worked with Ingram for over 10 years. Kim Miles, branch manager and vice president, has worked with Clifton for 21 years.

All together the Ocala team has an impressive 308 years of combined banking experience.

“People make the di erence. You’re only as good as the people you have under your roof,” says Ingram. “That’s always been my strength—bringing the best people together and creating a special environment. When you have capable people you trust, you have a lot of advantages.”

GIVING BACK

The Ocala team is fully invested in its hometown and makes a point of giving back close to home.

“It really goes back to the heart and soul of what community banking is. We serve our community by giving our time and support. We understand because we’re local,” says Ingram.

“We support dozens of non-pro ts in Marion County, doing this through dollars given to the community and in-kind contributions. Every team member is involved, whether through volunteer hours, event participation or donations,” says Clifton.

“We provide nancial education in middle and high schools and also support United Way’s Money Matters through dollar contributions and our experiences and ability to teach nancial awareness and nancial literacy,” she adds.

Free rst-time home buyers’ seminars hosted at the bank are just one of the many nancial education opportunities o ered.

Mainstreet Community Bank of Florida is an independent, FDIC-insured, locally owned and operated, full-service bank with eight locations in Central Florida, with room to grow.

A COMMUNITY GATHERING PLACE

THE CITY OF OCALA RECENTLY OPENED ITS NEWEST NEIGHBORHOOD HUB, THE MARY SUE RICH COMMUNITY CENTER AT REED PLACE.

The City of Ocala Recreation and Parks Department recently invited the public to the grand opening celebration of the new Mary Sue Rich Community Center at Reed Place, located at 1821 NW 21st Avenue.

The 41,750-square-foot, two-story building includes designated indoor space for senior, youth and family programs; a banquet/event space; tness equipment and indoor walking track; two full basketball courts; a library and multi-purpose studio rooms.

“The vision [for the community center] was to transform an undesirable location into a positive asset for Ocala residents,” says Ashley Dobbs, marketing and communications manager for the City of Ocala. “In 2018, the City of Ocala purchased this property, which consists of 24.5 acres and was formerly the site of the Royal Oak Charcoal Plant. This e ort was led by Mrs. Ruth Reed, a long-time resident of the surrounding neighborhood and active member of the community.”

Mrs. Reed was part of the kicko ceremony to demolish the remaining building and prepare

it for redevelopment. After a bidding process, the City ultimately awarded the project to Ohlson Lavoie Corporation, an Orlando design rm, which designed and created the community center. A groundbreaking took place at the future site of the community center on January 28, 2021, and the public grand opening was held on January 21, 2023.

The Ocala City Council adopted a resolution naming the community center after both Mrs. Reed and Mary Sue Rich in December 2019. Mary Sue Rich represented District 2 on the City Council for 24 years and was the longest-serving member and rst Black woman elected to the City Council. During her time, Mrs. Rich provided outstanding service and visionary leadership to all of Ocala. The resolution naming the center was adopted at her nal meeting. Both Mrs. Rich and Mrs. Reed were able to attend the ribboncutting ceremony for the center.

The $10.3 million project was made possible through community partnerships, including a $2.3 million investment from the Marion

County Hospital District with the goal to promote a healthier lifestyle and $50,000 from the Ocala Junior League for the addition of an indoor playground.

The community center is focused on programs for all ages. Everyone from small

children to young adults, active adults and senior adults will be able to participate in activities featured at the center. Sports programs, painting classes, tness classes, educational seminars and more will be o ered. Future plans include adding outdoor spaces, including a playground, event lawn and community garden.

“A community center becomes the hub of a neighborhood, a place that o ers programs to young children, adults and seniors, and provides educational, recreational and a gathering spot for people within a community,” says Ashley. “Revitalization e orts have been ongoing within this area, including the addition of the Ocala Wetland Recharge Park and the West Oak housing project, both within close proximity to the community center’s location.”

The community center also contains a branch of the Marion County Library System.

“For many years there has been a need for a public library in this community,” says Ashley. “The City of Ocala is excited to partner with Marion County to provide the dedicated space within the center to include a branch of the public library. Together we can provide additional resources that will continue to impact those who utilize this space now and in the future.”

Memberships allow visitors to enjoy the amenities and programming available throughout the year. City residents may sign up for free. Memberships for non-residents are $30 per person, per year. Additional information about programming and schedules can be found at ocala .org/recpark and then by clicking on “Centers” from the dropdown bar on the left side of the page. The community center is open Monday through Friday, 8am-8pm; Saturday, 8am5pm; and Sunday, noon-5pm.

CENTRAL FLORIDA IS THE PERFECT PLACE TO TAKE TO THE SKIES FOR SOME HIGH-FLYING FUN AND ADVENTURE—NO PILOT’S LICENSE REQUIRED.

HANG GLIDING

WALLABY RANCH, DAVENPORT

Malcolm Jones was an avid water-skier as a teenager growing up in Tampa. It was while strapped onto water skis that Malcolm got his rst taste of ight.

“I tried a Delta Wing Ski Kite,” he says. “The term hang glider hadn’t been coined yet, but it was basically a small hang glider. As soon as my skis left the surface of the Bay it was like experiencing an a-ha moment. It was an unexpected, magical feeling. It was scary to watch the other people do it but super easy to do. I knew after that rst ight that I would do a whole lot more of that.”

Malcolm made true on that promise,

getting airborne any chance he could. He moved to California and ew hang gliders o coastal cli s. Eventually, he caught the eye of a sponsor and his talents took him around the world to places like New Zealand, Australia, Canada and throughout the United States. He even ended up working for a hang gliding company. To say the sport has been his life’s work would be an understatement.

Eventually the Florida native made his way back home to be closer to family and took a job at EPCOT Center’s Surprise in the Skies show, an elaborate aerial production.

“This time coincided with the evolution of towing gliders behind ultralights, meaning you could hang glide anywhere,” Malcolm

says. He loved the sport so much that one of his greatest joys was introducing others to the magic of hang gliding. With that in mind he got to work coming up with the idea of a hang gliding school, based around aero-towing a tandem (two place) glider on wheels.

“I bought a pasture near Disney World and started teaching people how to hang glide,” he says. Wallaby Ranch (named to honor Australia, the birthplace of hang gliding) was born. And people took note. Word got around the small hang gliding community, and Malcolm’s method quickly became the gold standard for teaching people to y around the world.

That was in 1992, and over the decades, Malcolm has own with thousands of adventure seekers, whether someone looking for a oneand-done bucket list experience or someone interested in eventually piloting their own hang glider and teaching others. You won’t nd any ashing arrows or crowded tra c leading up to the ranch. Instead the whole experience, from start to nish, is relaxing and calm. It truly is about experiencing nature.

“I am unusual,” Malcolm says. “Hang gliding was always a very individualistic, solo sport, but I have always loved to y with someone else. I was well suited to be an instructor and introduce other people to this sport.”

“A Discovery Flight is very popular,” Malcolm says. “Ultimately anyone who tries it ends up sending others to try.” Malcolm says it’s a powerful experience to hang glide but not one to fear.

“One of the most common things I hear is how someone wants to try hang gliding, but they have a fear of heights,” he says. “What it

should be called is a fear of falling. Personally, I hate getting up on an extension ladder to clean the gutters. It’s a spooky feeling that leaves you feeling exposed. Hang gliding is nothing like that. You are strapped in thoroughly, and there is no sensation of falling like you would have with sky diving or even being on that ladder.”

On your Discovery Flight, you and Malcolm are strapped into the tandem glider and taxi behind an ultralight-type aircraft. You leave the ground around 30 miles per hour and are released at about 2,000 feet to begin your glide. The free ight slows down to about 25 miles

per hour, and it’s a relaxing, smooth descent where Malcolm says you can carry on a normal conversation without raising your voice.

“When we get to 50 to 100 feet I check in with my passenger, and if they don’t like it, we can release and land,” says Malcolm. “But that never happens, they always want to keep going. There really are no words to describe hang gliding, it’s just something you have to try.”

Turning is a piece of cake and is as simple as shifting your body weight from side to side. Malcolm says you get used to it quickly, and most rides last about 15 to 20 minutes,

“We cut no corners on safety at Wallaby Ranch,” says Malcolm. “Tandem ights are weightsensitive, and the weather conditions have to be just right. If it’s not perfect, we don’t y.”

Malcolm has logged far more tandem ights than any other pilot on Earth, about 50,000 at last estimate, and he says, “We’ve never put a scratch on a soul.”

“The youngest passenger I’ve had was 3, and the oldest was a 100 year old celebrating her birthday,” Malcolm adds.

His ranch has also caught the eye of Hollywood, and he’s own with the likes of Al Roker and Matt Lauer from the Today Show and Dirty Jobs star Mike Rowe and appeared in a scene, hang gliding of course, with Kate Hudson in A Little Bit Of Heaven, among others.

Time and time again, you’ll read and watch testimonials of people saying they thought hang gliding would be scary, but it wasn’t. Fantastic. Awesome. Awe-inspiring. Amazing.

GLIDERS SEMINOLE LAKE GLIDERPORT, CLERMONT

Imagine ying in an aircraft and not hearing engine noise. That’s the experience you’ll get when ying in a glider at Seminole-Lake Gliderport. Similar to a hang glider, a glider ies without an engine and is towed to its starting altitude by an aircraft with an engine.

'A glider is a xed-wing aircraft,” says Angelica-Mihaela Luculescu, the operations manager for the Seminole-Lake Gliderport. “They have longer wings than an airplane does and are designed to be very light in weight. A small airplane needs an engine to y; however, it can land like a glider, without an engine running. For the most part gliders are being towed up to a certain altitude by a powered plane connected by a rope, from where they release whenever they reach the desired altitude. Gliders use heat to stay in the air longer and can y long crosscountry ights for hundreds of kilometers, using thermals to gain altitude when low. Thermals are created when the sun heats up the ground and the air above it rises.”

Gliders can be one-, two- or rarely three-

The Intro to Soaring Ride takes riders to 3,000 feet and lasts approximately 15 to 20 minutes. The Scenic Adventure Ride starts at 4,000 feet and lasts about 25 to 35 minutes, and the Mile-High Ride takes passengers to 5,000 feet and lasts roughly 30 to 50 minutes. Riders also have the option of having their entire ight lmed with a GoPro camera for an additional cost.

Situated in nearby Clermont, the country surroundings and rolling hills are the perfect backdrop for your birds-eye view ight.

“We have plenty of quiet, greenery and wildlife,” says Mihaela. “You’ll experience the big blue skies as you glide over the country scenery ying like the birds do in silent ight.”

Visitors are welcome to try a one-time glider ride when visiting, but Seminole-Lake also o ers glider training year-round.

“Our clients are primarily airline pilots or just power pilots looking to add a glider rating by

Seminole-Lake Gliderport has been ying gliders in Central Florida for more than 50 years. On a good soaring day, weather

In addition to their fun, exploration ights,

Whether you’re an aviation enthusiast, have a bucket list or just love the outdoors and nature, jump in the passenger’s seat and come try out an intro to soaring ight, where you will enjoy quietly soaring through the air like a bird, using only thermals and pilot skill to y,” says Mihaela. “Bring your lunch and stay for a picnic with your family and friends. SEAPLANES

JONES BROTHERS AIR & SEAPLANE ADVENTURE, TAVARES

It’s a boat… it’s a plane… it’s both. Known as Seaplane City, USA. Tavares is home to Jones Brothers Air & Seaplane Adventures, based out of Wooten Park, where you can take a unique ride on a oat plane or an amphibious aircraft.

Basically, your ight takes o from and lands on water. Jones Brothers o ers a variety of ightseeing trips, plus excursion packages for those looking for a destination trip.

“The ightseeing trips are timed out,” says Mary Oliva, o cer manager at Jones Brothers Air & Seaplane Adventures. “There’s the 15-minute Splash and Dash that explores

plus some of the Orlando attractions from a distance. The hour-long trip goes all the way to the St. John’s River and springs.”

Their most popular trip, though, and Mary’s personal favorite, is the 35-minute Harris Chain & Down the River ight.

“It’s really a beautiful ight with all the natural scenery,” she says. “We do low-river ying over the Ocklawaha River with this one.”

Each of their ightseeing trips includes a touch and go, when the plane dips down to splash in the water for a moment before returning to the skies.

The excursion packages are themed and include regular breakfast, lunch and dinner y-ins. Roundtrip, including ight time, food and exploration, is usually about three hours. Destinations may include DeLeon Springs, Lake Weir, Lake Killarney and others. Mary notes that there has to be a beach area to land and not just a dock.

“They are very popular ights, and the destinations change from time to time,” says Mary. “Our dinner y-in is often used as a romantic backdrop for anniversary celebrations, and proposals are quite common.”

The excursions take place in the bigger of the planes, a Cessna 206, which can seat ve as long as the maximum combined weight doesn’t exceed 775 pounds. The ightseeing trips are shorter and

Jones Brothers also o ers seaplane pilot training.

“It’s for pilots who already have their single engine land license,” says Mary. “You can earn your single engine water license in three days and receive your check ride by an examiner on the third day. We take six students a week with two students per session. These pilots already know how to y, so it’s about practicing taking o and landing on water.”

On any given weekend there is plenty to see and do in Wooten Park, and the seaplanes are usually running and available for rides. Flightseeing tours are every day except Thursday, and excursions take place weekdays except Thursdays. Weekends are a no-go because of all the boat tra c on the area waterways.

Toward the end of March the Planes, BBQ & Brew festivities will be taking place in Wooten Park, and in April look for the Sun & Fun in Lakeland event, which brings seaplane pilots to the area from all over the country.

“Riding in a seaplane is a truly remarkable experience,” says Mary. “We get a lot of bucket listers who want to check an item o their list, and we get seniors who want to experience the ight before they can’t. There are just a few steps to maneuver, so you have to be a little bit agile. I’m of the mindset that you should try everything at least once.”
