KISS THE HORSE

THIS YEAR CELEBRATES YEAR 13 OF THE MARION COUNTY LITERACY COUNCIL’S LARGEST FUNDRAISER.

There are some events that are quintessentially Ocala/ Marion County, and the Kiss the Horse fundraiser is one of them. Kiss the Horse is a unique community fundraiser in which individuals and teams engage in diverse and dynamic e orts to raise money for and knowledge of the Marion County Literacy Council. This year was a celebration of 13 years as the Literacy Council’s largest fundraiser.

The winner’s circle was held at the Juniper General Store where contestants, friends, family and supporters enjoyed cuisine prepared by a local Latin fusion restaurant, Latino y Mas.

“We were absolutely thrilled to be hosting our 13th annual Kiss the Horse fundraiser,” says Organizer R.J. Jenkins. “We are so grateful to the generous members of our community who raised funds and awareness for the important work that the Literacy Council does in our community. What an incredible gift.”

All proceeds from the event bene t the Marion County Literacy Council, but this year, the board of directors of the Literacy Council made the decision to gift 10 percent of all funds raised to the Marion Therapeutic Riding Association as a thank you for lending them their beautiful horse, Wesley.

The winning Kiss the Horse team consisted of Alex Rudnianyn, Madi Dixon, Candice Martin, Emma Joyner, Daisy Jones and Kaylie Saez, all of whom won the contest by raising $6,200. Altogether, the Kiss the Horse celebrity candidates and event sponsors raised $20,000.

The event was organized by the volunteer executive director for the Literacy Council, R.J. Jenkins, in partnership with the Juniper General Store and the Marion Therapeutic Riding Association.

“The true success of the event rests on the generous community members who agree to serve as celebrity Kiss the Horse candidates,” says R.J.

MUSIC WITH THE MAESTRO

OCTOBER KICKS OFF THE 2023-2024 OCALA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA SEASON.

Having become a cherished area tradition since its launch in 1975, the Ocala Symphony Orchestra continues to deliver outstanding live music events. The upcoming season promises to be one of the best yet.

“I think every season gets better and better with the choice of musical experiences,” says Savannah Silliman, marketing manager of the Reilly Arts Center, home of the Ocala Symphony.

“The diversity of the programming is stellar this season.”

Not only does the coming season include world premiere pieces and internationally known guest artists, but there will also be pieces by living composers. Guests can enjoy not one, but three multi-media performances.

The 2023-2024 season is Maestro Matthew Wardell’s 15th year with the Ocala Symphony. As music director and conductor, he has assembled an impressive schedule for his 15th anniversary year.

“We have a great variety of new things happening this season,” says Maestro Wardell. “Every concert has something exciting— from guest artists to world premieres.”

The season opens on October 21 and 22 featuring Mahler’s famous Symphony No. 1 and the world premiere of Breath of Life by Gainesville composer Paul Richards, who will be in attendance at the concert.

Early December brings an abundance of cheer with the symphony’s annual concerts, Pops! Goes the Holidays and the free Symphony Under the Lights. The free event is a musical gift to the community from the Ocala Symphony and members of the Ocala Youth Symphony. Held outdoors at Tuscawilla Park, it’s a favorite Ocala holiday celebration.

To kick o the new year the Ocala Symphony will perform the 1923 classic The Hunchback of Notre Dame, accompanied by an original score composed by Maestro Wardell and Brad DeLoatche.

January’s performances of Hungarian Pictures features principal guest conductor Raymond Chobaz with iconic works by Hungarian and Romanian composers. To expand the concert experience, the orchestra will o er a Hungarian-themed pre-concert dinner on Saturday and post-concert dinner on Sunday.

From subscription concerts to special events, the upcoming season runs into April 2024 and promises memorable experiences for all ages.

IN CASE OF EMERGENCY

Heat exhaustion. A broken leg. Snake bite. A cut that is bleeding profusely. If you were on a camping trip or hiking far from home, would you know what to do in a medical emergency?

You’ll have the comfort of knowing exactly how to respond in these scenarios—and many others—if you take the Wilderness First Aid course at The FOLC Farm.

Located within walking distance of Payne’s Prairie, The FOLC Farm is a homestead and learning center that has o ered courses for both adults and children since 2018. FOLC stands for Florida Outdoor Learning Collective.

Courses include selfsufficiency skills, health, outdoor education, sustainable environmental practices and more. Some courses are one-day events, such as the Kids’ Survival Skills, gardening and foraging classes.

Open to ages 13 and older, the Wilderness First Aid course is the most popular class o ered. The 17-hour, two-day program is taught over a weekend.

“Some of the participants are outdoor leaders and guides, and many are outdoor enthusiasts, but anyone and everyone would bene t from taking a Wilderness First Aid class,” says Catherine Jean, owner of The FOLC Farm and one of the lead instructors.

“This course teaches all the essentials of rst aid and emphasizes adaptability to your environment and creativity in what materials you use,” she notes. “The life-saving skills learned in this course can help save a family member at home, a neighbor at the park, a co-worker in the o ce or a friend on vacation.”

Someone wanting more extensive knowledge on how to handle medical emergencies in

remote environments would bene t from the intensive Wilderness First Responder.

“That is an eight-day, 70-hour course. We get people from all over the United States and other countries who come to The FOLC Farm to earn their WFR certi cation,” says Catherine.

Wilderness First Responder participants must be 16 or older. CPR courses are available for those age 13 and up. Kids’ Survival Skills classes are geared toward ages 7 to 13.

“We regularly have new class o erings throughout the year,” says Catherine. “In addition to outdoor education courses, we hold free community events several times a year for all ages—potlucks, holiday gatherings, music around the re.”

Wilderness First Aid courses are taught monthly with dates posted for the year. For non-medical courses, check the website and Facebook page for events that happen throughout the year at various times.
