Store Cattle, Cast Cows & Calves Lancaster Friday 1st June A smaller entry of Store Cattle forward sold to another strong trade with all buyers present requiring cattle. It was noted that younger cattle were a sharper trade today. The trade topped at £1490 for British Blue bullocks from J Oddie and Son of Balderstone. Blues also sold to £1320 from H & JA Gorst of Caldervale. Native bred cattle are always required in Lancaster with Angus bullocks selling to £1,270 from A Kirkby and Co of Pilling. The heifer trade topped at £1,180 for Angus heifers from W & J Parkinson of Garstang. A fantastic Cast Cow trade from start to finish with all specifications of cows a good trade. There was a few more cast cows on offer selling to a market average of 137p/kg. OTM heifers twice sold to a top of 199.5p/kg from P & A Bell of Pilling for Angus’ and Limousins from AS & D Parker of Nateby. Cast bulls topped the trade selling to £1553 for Limousins from JK & A Bowness and Son of Milnthorpe. Beef cows sold to a top of 159.5p/kg with best black and whites often selling in the mid 150’s. Black and white cows sold to a top of £1,210 from WG Farms of Cockerham with plenty of cows selling over the thousand pound mark. There was a shortage of Calves today with just forty forward and more could have easily been sold to the advantage of the vendor. The trade beat local collection centres with vendors advised to use auction market system. Angus bull calves topped the trade twice, selling to £350 from JK & B Birkett and Son of White Lund and David and Eileen Wallbank of Over Wyresdale. Strong beef calves sold in excess of £300 with young beef calves selling in the late two hundreds. The black and white trade topped at £205 and £165 from WN & D Smith and son of Cockerham with all black and white calves forward averaging £127.40. Lancaster Sale Reports Monday 4th June The largest entry of Spring Lambs to date this season saw over 500 forward selling to a buoyant trade throughout the sale. There was nine active buyers, all looking to purchase spring lambs. There was an overall market average of 258p/kg. Lambs weighing between 32-39kg averaged £99.95, 39.1-45.5kg averaged £106.91, 45.6-52kg averaged £118.40 and 52kg plus averaged £127.33. The trade today topped twice at £131 for Texels from J & R Waller of Killington or 298p/kg and Suffolks from Liz Needham of Stainton. Texel lambs sold to a top 313p/kg from S Wilson and Son of Scotforth closely followed by 303p/kg from A & E Clarkson of Thurnham. More lambs required to fulfil buyer’s requirements on a Monday morning. A larger entry of 100 Cast Ewes forward with all specifications of ewes a sharper trade this week with the end of the Ramadan next week. Continental ewes sold to a top of £121 from P & ME Higginson of Out Rawcliffe closely followed by continental ewes to £116 from BD wood of Out Rawcliffe with plenty of big continental ewes around the £110 mark. Mule ewes sold to a top of £108 from Bensons Farm of Claughton on Brock with plenty of big mule ewes in the nineties. All mule ewes forward averaged in the eighties. Horned ewes saw Swaledale ewes sell to £68 and Rough Fells to £67 from SM & CM Bewley of Dent. J36 Sale Reports Thursday 31st May The fortnightly sale of Store Cattle at NWA J36 saw another strong trade for all classes and types and many more could have easily been sold. The sale topped at £980 for Aberdeen Angus x heifers from G Cuthbertson, New Hutton with a British Blue x from J & J Postlethwaite, Sedbergh achieving £920. Yearling heifers sold to £760 for a Blonde x from SJ & NS Wood, Windermere with others regularly at £700-£750. Steers sold to £895 for Blonde crosses, again, from SJ & NS Wood with others generally £780 -£850. There were several weaned sucklers forward (5-7 months old) which were easily sold with heifers to £690 and steers to £650 from DN Smith, Cartmel Fell. Well-fleshed Cast Cattle remain a competitive trade with beef bred cows generally 140p/kg – 160p/kg, peaking at 167.5p/kg for a Limousin x from Forest Hall Farm, Selside, with dairy cattle to 144.5p/kg from ME Wannop & Sons, Morecambe. Medium cows regularly sold 110-125p/kg with only the leanest less. Top grossing cow today was a Hereford cow from I & AJ Armer, Burneside achieving £1152. All cows sold averaged 125p/kg. Beef calves regularly sold between £280 and £340 for both heifers and bulls, native bred and Continentals. The sale topped at £375 for a British Blue x heifer from DW Cottam, New Hutton with younger heifers at £275 to £300. Simental x heifers from ME Wannop & Sons, Morecambe sold to £288 with others at £260 to £275. Continental bull calves regularly sold over £300 with Simental x to £345, British Blue x to £338 and Limousin x to £330. Several consignments of native sired calves were forward and eagerly bid for with Hereford x bulls to £355, again, from ME Wannop & Sons Ltd who sold heifers to £278 and Aberdeen Angus x heifers to £260. The 514 Spring Lambs averaged 258p/kg for all sold, with lambs 40kg plus easiest to sell. Suffolk lambs sold to a top of £133.50 from Helen Newton of Low Levens, closely followed by £132 from D Metcalfe of Dalton in Furness. Charollais lambs sold to a top of £132.50 from WS Burrow and Sons of Silverdale with Beltex lambs from the same good home selling to £129. Beltex lambs sold to a top of 286p/kg from WS Burrow and Sons of Silverdale, closely followed by AE Atkinson & Son of Endmoor to 284p/kg with plenty of pens of good conformation lambs in the region of 280p/kg. There was plenty of heavy weight Continental and Suffolk ewes selling in the £120’s, selling to a top of £130 for Suffolk ewes from Liz Needham of Stainton with Texel ewes to £128 from E Dodgson Kendal. All Suffolk ewes forward averaged £117 and continental ewes averaged £106.33. There were many consignments of ewes averaging well over the £100 mark.
