J36 Grass Day Show & Sale of Store Cattle Thursday 3rd May NWA held its annual Grass Day Show and Sale of Store Cattle on Thursday 3rd May with the strong catalogued entry attracting buyers from throughout the northern counties and further afield, all keen to secure replacement stock. The show was kindly judged by Mr D Anderson, Maryport who awarded the Championship rosette to JG & PH Thompson, Poppy Farm, Selside which later sold for £1270 to F & B Smith. Reserve was awarded to AR & BJ Thompson also of Poppy Farm. Thanks must go to our judge and also the days sponsors PV Dobson & Sons, JS Accountancy, Jelf & Northern Boiler Grants. The strongest, well-grown steers were regularly achieving £1100 to £1200, topping at £1280 for Limousin crosses from AE Atkinson & Son of Endmoor. The best of the yearlings were not far behind with S Procter, Selside selling British Blue crosses to £1270 and JA & KJ Allen reaching £1200 for Limousin crosses. Nice runs of yearling steers generally sold from £880 to £1000 with evenly drawn bunches easiest to sell. Heifers sold to £1240 for Limousin crosses also from AE Atkinson & Son, Edmoor, with other stronger sorts selling £1000 - £1100. Yearlings sold to £1160 from AR & BJ Thompson, Selside, with other well grown sorts £980 - £1100. Younger heifers for grazing generally sold to £780 - £880. A wonderful selection of native bred cattle saw Aberdeen Angus cross steers, 10 months old, achieve £860, Shorthorns £900, Galloways £1150 and Herefords £980. Heifers sold to £1040 for Aberdeen Angus crosses, £930 for Hereford crosses and £870 for Galloways. There were several young suckler bred bulls forward, selling to £1250 for Blonde crosses from MJ Whitworth, Bolton-le-Sands and Limousin crosses to £1100 from T Atkinson.
