J36 Grass Day Show & Sale of Store Cattle Thursday 3rd May NWA held its annual Grass Day Show and Sale of Store Cattle on Thursday 3rd May with the strong catalogued entry attracting buyers from throughout the northern counties and further afield, all keen to secure replacement stock. The show was kindly judged by Mr D Anderson, Maryport who awarded the Championship rosette to JG & PH Thompson, Poppy Farm, Selside which later sold for £1270 to F & B Smith. Reserve was awarded to AR & BJ Thompson also of Poppy Farm. Thanks must go to our judge and also the days sponsors PV Dobson & Sons, JS Accountancy, Jelf & Northern Boiler Grants. The strongest, well-grown steers were regularly achieving £1100 to £1200, topping at £1280 for Limousin crosses from AE Atkinson & Son of Endmoor. The best of the yearlings were not far behind with S Procter, Selside selling British Blue crosses to £1270 and JA & KJ Allen reaching £1200 for Limousin crosses. Nice runs of yearling steers generally sold from £880 to £1000 with evenly drawn bunches easiest to sell. Heifers sold to £1240 for Limousin crosses also from AE Atkinson & Son, Edmoor, with other stronger sorts selling £1000 - £1100. Yearlings sold to £1160 from AR & BJ Thompson, Selside, with other well grown sorts £980 - £1100. Younger heifers for grazing generally sold to £780 - £880. A wonderful selection of native bred cattle saw Aberdeen Angus cross steers, 10 months old, achieve £860, Shorthorns £900, Galloways £1150 and Herefords £980. Heifers sold to £1040 for Aberdeen Angus crosses, £930 for Hereford crosses and £870 for Galloways. There were several young suckler bred bulls forward, selling to £1250 for Blonde crosses from MJ Whitworth, Bolton-le-Sands and Limousin crosses to £1100 from T Atkinson.

Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 4th May A good entry of 270 Store Cattle in the market today, where trade continues to meet strong demand with cattle looking dearer than last week. The top price of the day was achieved by PM&ST Entwistle of Abbeystead for a pen of Charolais Steers selling for £1360. Closely followed by British Blue steers selling to £1350 and £1330 from JD&GM Bracken of Catterall. Black & White steers sold to £1160 from LA Bradshaw of Stalmine. Native bred cattle sold to £1280 for Aberdeen Angus steers from R Escolme of Bay Horse. All steers in the market sold to average £980.13. Heifers selling to £1280 for British Blues also forward from JD&GM Bracken, followed by others from A Thompson of Carnforth at £1200. All heifers sold to an average of £979.81. There was a reduced entry of Calves and Stirks forward today selling to a very strong trade. Beef calves saw more sell in excess of £300, than under £300. Topping the trade today was a consignment of Angus bulls from Cornthwaites of Moors Farm selling to £375 and £370 with others to £350 and £330 from Wallbank Farms of Over Wyresdale. Black and whites, also from Wallbank Farms sold to £118. A couple of stirks on offer this week saw Hereford steers at 11 months old selling to £665 from JR Newsham of Conder Green. Monday 7th May - Record Breaking Price for Hoggs with Lambs There was a major jump in the number of Spring Lambs forward this week with an entry of 171. There was an overall market average of 266p/kg. Topping the trade today at £142 was Texel lambs from GH Sanderson and Family of Catforth with Suffolks from the same good home to £133. Winner of the highest priced pen of 4 or less lamsb went to GH Sanderson & Family sellings Texels to £142 and the winner of the highest priced pen of 5 or more lambs went to HR & KA Hodgson, Howriggs with Suffolks to £114. A similar number of Prime Hoggs on offer this week saw a very mixed entry on offer, well-fleshed hoggs were in very strong demand and buyers were leaving short of supply with leaner types selling to realisation. There was an overall market average of 219p/kg with 45-50kg hoggs averaging 241p/kg. Topping the trade was Texel hoggs from W & J Livesey of Inskip selling to £141 and £138. This was closely followed by Charollais hoggs to £136 from RS & IM Kellet of Cockerham. The trade topped at 283p/kg from AG Butler of Hambleton. The annual show and sale of Hoggs with Lambs at foot saw a new record high price. This was achieved with the Champion pen consigned by B & SE Carter of Ellel who sold Texel hoggs with Beltex lambs at foot selling to £270, a new centre record. Thanks must go to our pre-sale judge Mr Trevor Smith of Pilling and our sponsor Ribble Fuel Oils. Two further pens of hoggs sold to £200, firstly for the first prize pen of Mule hoggs with single Texel lambs consigned by PM & AM Ward and Sons of Arkholme, with Continental hoggs and secondly for single lambs from J Bargh of Heaton with Oxcliffe. Plenty of pens of hoggs with single lambs sold around the £180 mark. A few older families on offer saw Texel shearlings with twin lambs sell to £200 from EI, EA & TW Wilson of Flookborough and broken mouth Mule ewes with twins sold to £170 from D & K Swarbrick of Out Rawcliffe.

There was a larger entry of Calves and Stirks forward, selling to another strong trade this week, in which more of all types are needed to fulfil buyer’s requirements, with some buyers going without or short of what they require. Topping the trade today was British Blue bulls from JW & D Robinson of Nook selling five and six-week-old calves to £415 and £400. This was closely followed by six week old Simmental bulls selling to £390 from ME Wannop and Son of Heaton with Oxcliffe. Angus bull calves topped at £380 from J & M Maudsley and Son of Endmoor with good strong beef calves selling in excess of £350. Heifers topped at £310 from DW Cottam of New Hutton with others from the same good home selling to £265. Dairy bulls sold to a top of £170 for Flekviehs from R & J Dodgson of Natalnd and black and whites selling to £88 from HJ Robinson and Son of Preston Patrick. Saturday 5th May - Machinery The monthly sale of machinery at NWA J36 saw an entry of 1550 lots forward for sale. A full yard of agricultural items attracted buyers from throughout the Northern Counties, Scotland, the Midlands and the Isle of Man. A John Deere tractor with loader sold at £13,000 followed by a Case CS94 4WD at £11,000. Older tractors achieved £2650 for an International 574 (2WD) with a Tanco loader and a David Brown 885 (2WD) for £1120. Seasonal grassland equipment saw a Lely Splendimp Disc Mower sell for £5450, Reco Single Rota Rake £2500, JD Disc Mower £2000, Haybobs £400 - £1000, Fertiliser Spreaders £300 - £1000. A Kubota X6 tracked digger sold at £3650. Several vehicles and quads selling today peaked at £5250 for a Landrover Discovery 3 and a Honda Quad Bike at £2250. The small tool auction had another bumper entry of over 700 lots with something for everyone. We would encourage vendors to pre-enter items to assist with advertising.
Tuesday 8th May - Annual Show & Sale of Hoggs with Lambs The great annual show and sale of Hoggs with Lambs at foot, once again, created large interest from vendors and purchasers from throughout the north of England. Thanks must go to our pre-sale judges Richard and Jonathan Frankland who judged the Mules and Leslie and Megan Kendal who judged the Continental class, whom we thank for their time and expertise. Our thanks must also go to the sale day sponsor Cornthwaite Agriculture. The Championship rosette was awarded to Nick Brown & Charlotte Ormondroyd of Claughton, with their five Continental Hoggs with Beltex Lambs at foot. These later went onto sell for £230 an outfit to Frankland Farms. The Reserve Champion was awarded to Messrs G Sowerby of Ormside with a pen of five Mule Gimmer Hoggs with Suffolk Lambs, which sold to £250 to Mr M Robinson of Kendal. A buoyant trade throughout the sale saw numerous pens of Hoggs with Lambs at foot selling over the £200 mark, with vendors leaving well satisfied. The weekly sale of Sheep with lambs at foot had a similar number forward to the previous week selling to a sharper trade. Mule shearlings with twin lambs at foot sold to £205 and £202 from WI & AM Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale with Mule shearlings with singles selling to £178 from the same home. Continental Shearlings with single lambs sold to a top of £205 from T Morland of Tebay. Aged Mule ewes suckling strong Suffolk twins sold to £188 from CS & SE Wood, Penrith. More hill sheep coming onto the market now saw aged Herdwick ewes with twins sell to £122 from Kirkby & Longworth, Ulpha. The second show and sale of Hoggs with Lambs at Foot will take place on Tuesday 22nd May. The weekly sale of Spring Lambs had an entry of 102 forward, with plenty of good lambs on offer this week saw an overall market average of 305p/kg. Topping the trade at £145 was Texel Lambs from IL Dixon, Cantsfield, weighing 43kg selling to 337p/kg. This was closely followed by Texel lambs weighing 39kg selling to 335p/kg from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe. Plenty of good conformation lambs sold in excess of 325p/kg. Winner of this week’s £5 for the highest priced pen of 4 or less spring lambs went to IL Dixon of Cantsfield. There was over 600 Prime Hoggs forward, once again, at J36 selling to an overall market average 222p/kg with a very mixed entry on offer this week. Topping the trade this week were heavy weight Texel hoggs from J Woodburn & Partners, Ulverston. This was closely followed by heavy weight Suffolks from FI & ME Little, Barrows Green selling to £145. Plenty of well-fleshed hoggs sold in the £130. The weekly consignment from JG Harryman, Hawkshead topped the pence per kilo trade selling to 309p/kg for Beltex Hoggs, with others to 293p/kg. The Cast Ewe numbers continue to come forward to J36 which meet a strong trade with over 400 forward again this week. Topping the trade was JF Cook, Witherslack with Suffolk ewes selling to £131, which was closely followed by Charollais ewes from JA & R Geldard & Sons, Levens selling to £123. Texel ewes sold twice to £115 from J Woodburn & Partners, Ulverston. Plenty of Continental ewes sold over the £100 mark. Mule ewes sold to a top of £92, again, from J Woodburn & Partners with plenty of heavy-weight Mule ewes selling in the eighties. Horned ewes sold to a top of £83 from FI & ME Little, Barrows Green, with plenty of fit horned ewes selling between £60 and £70.
