North West Auctions Weekly Report and Newsletter – 9th August

Lancaster Store Cattle Friday 4th August There was a larger number of Store Cattle forward this week with a catalogued entry of 385, which saw good quality and cattle carrying flesh continue to be in strong demand and easily sold, with 10 cattle selling in excess of £1400.

The trade was topped by MS Dugdale & Sons of Tewitfield with his regular consignment of tremendous Continental bullocks topping at £1550 for British Blues, with Limousins from the same good home selling to £1490 and £1470.

Native Cattle saw Aberdeen Angus Bullocks sell to £1380 for T & E Burrow of Slyne with all with all Angus Bullocks averaging £1110.

Heifers sold to £1240 for a Simmental Heifer from AS & D Parker of Preston.

Friesian Bullocks sold to £1140 from L Parsons & Son of Low Levens for a pen of three.

This week’s Cast Cow sale saw a bumper entry of 126 forward. Meaty cows sold to a continued good trade with leaner cows harder to place, especially with a larger number of parlour cows forward. The market saw an overall average of 120p/kg.

Cast cows sold to a top 191.5p/kg for a British Blue from TE, JS & SA Carruthers of Underbarrow.

Best Black and White Cows sold to 174.5p/kg from BW & J Robinson of Treales which also achieved the highest price per head selling to £1200.50. Well fleshed Friesian Cattle sold around the 140p/kg mark.

Aberdeen Angus OTM Steers sold to 184p/kg from EJ Ward & Son of Nether Kellet.

Cast Bulls sold to £1351.33 from HR & JA Hodgson of Barbon for a Limousin Cast Bull which was closely followed by J & A Smales for a South Devon Bull selling to £1330.

The weekly sale of Calves and stirks saw an increased number forward again this week, with calf numbers gradually beginning to increase again at Lancaster. British Blue bull calves sold to £475 and £455 from David and Eileen Wallbank of Abbeystead with British Blue heifers from the same home selling to £415 and Angus bulls to £420. There was plenty of beef calves selling in the late three hundreds today.

There was a very small entry of black and whites with all eagerly bid for topping at £150 from David and Eileen Wallbank, with all black and whites forward selling to a market average of £83.48.

It was great to have nearly thirty stirks in this week selling to a top of £500 for five month old British Blue steers from the Cornthwaite Family of Poulton le Flyde and four month old British Blue bulls from G & ME Woodhouse of Ellel selling to £485.

Lancaster Sale Reports Monday 7th August The weekly sale of Prime Lambs had a larger entry forward this week selling to an overall market average 195p/kg.

Three quarter Bred Texels sold in excess of 210p/kg, topping at 217p/kg from Bargh Contractors of Heaton with Oxcliffe. Plenty of pens of well-fleshed Continental lambs were regularly selling around the 200p/kg mark.

Trade topped at £103 for heavy weight Suffolks from S Kellet & Sons of Pilling Hall. Texel Lambs sold to £96 for 45kg Lambs from TR Prickett of Hutton Roof. Once again, it was great to have plenty of lambs selling in the eighties and nineties, especially for the time of year. More could have been sold with a fresh buyer in attendance today Prime Lamb Top Prices: SUFF: £103 Pilling Hall; £96 Ivy Farm; £94.50 Walnut Tree. The Cast Ewe numbers continue to increase at Lancaster with 191 forward this week, selling to a brisk trade from start to finish which more could have been sold to the advantage of the vendor. We urge our vendors to benefit from this trade and market their sheep sooner rather than later.

Topping the trade today with Texel Ewes was JK & BE Townley of Brookhouse selling to £104 and £103 with CD & HL Mason of Brookhouse selling Texel Ewes to £100. Plenty of big Continental ewes sold in the nineties.

Leicester Ewes topped at £96 from BD Gill of Ingleton. Best Mule ewes, once again, selling into the eighties topping at £84 from A & J Rhodes of Ellel with a pen of 14 big Mule ewes. All mules forward averaged £69.32. Horned Ewes sold to a top of £74 for Dalesbreds from BD Gill.

Texel Cast Tups topped at £100 from PD Anderton of Scorton.

An exceptional Master Breeder Herd and being classed as one of the best herds in the UK with many awards being achieved in the Lancashire Herd Competitions.

Entries inc. descendants from the famous breeding line at Arnot the Carlina Cow Family, with all nearly all the lines tracing back to the two super sisters Carlina 62 EX93 6E 7* LP100 and Carlina 47 VG89 7*. There are also lots from the other prolific cow families of the herd Winnifred, Lady, Freda, Charmer, Breeze and Peace. Combined with these highly valued cow families are the best bulls in the breed, with daughters of the following EDG Rubicon, Seagull-Bay-MJ Solaris, Mr Moviestar Mardi Gras, Larcrest Cayle, Toc-Farm Fitz, Seagull-Bay Supersire, Seagull-Bay Silver, De-Su Endeavor, Prehen Omen, De-Su Hilliard, Ladys-Manor Grafeeti, De-Su Penley and De-Su MCCutchen. A number of the top polled sires have daughters selling as well and include: Maple Wood Ball of Wax PP, Kerndtway Eraser P, ABS Polark, PP and Pine-Tree O’Hare P. The In Calf Heifers are nearly all in calf to sexed semen with sires inc. Walnutlawn Solomon, Sandy-Valley-I Penmanship, D-Su Alta Superstar, Seagull-Bay-MJ Solaris, Mr Rubi Agronaut and Seagull Bay Slvr Kimball. The herd has tested clear of Lepto, IBR & BVD and is screened for Johnes. There has never been a case of TB on the premises with a test passed on 25th July.

J36 Sale Reports Thursday 3rd August There was another good entry of 95 Calves forward today with all types sought after. Beef calves were in very good demand with many selling for in excess of £300. The trade topped at £415 for a British Blue bull calf from Gibson & Berry of Low Audlands. The top priced heifer beef calf sold for £370 for a British Blue from ML & SM Dobson of Crosthwaite. The top priced Limousin was a month old bull calf from B & MJ Nelson, Heversham selling for £400 and top priced Limousin heifer calf was sold for £365 from DR & C Galbraith of Grayrigg.

There was a young show of black and white calves today with many vendors having started calving. Best calves are still selling for over £100. Top price today was £195 for a Friesian bull calf from GJ & HB Fitzwilliam from Ulpha, near Broughton in Furness.

The fortnightly sale of Cast Cows saw good, meaty cows sell to a good trade again, but plainer types were not as easy to sell and an overall market average 118p/kg was achieved.

Beef cows topped the sale at £1360 for a Stabiliser cow from A Dixon & Son, Selside weighing in at 910kg. Dairy cattle topped at £1122 for a cow from AE & M Hayhurst of Natland. The TB Restricted section sold to a top of £1040 or 189.5p/kg for a Limousin from MW & M Hodgson of Cartmel Fell.

With grass disappearing and ground being extremely wet the edge was slightly off the trade today for Beef Breeding Cattle, but a small and quality entry today was topped by JS & KM Wilson of Helsington with a Charolais cow with a British Blue heifer calf at foot selling for £1420.

This was closely followed by a Continental cow with a Simmental bull calf at foot selling for £1250 from RM & PM Simpson of Troutbeck.

In-calf Heifers saw a British Blue in-calf to an Angus bull sell for £1020 from SJ & A Hargreaves.

Store Cattle were a good trade today and in line with other markets. More could easily have been sold to a good ringside of buyers.

Topping the day’s trade was a 27 month old Blonde heifer from G Denny & Son, Johnscales selling for £1080. The same vendor also had a 27 month old Charolais heifer selling for £1060 and a 29 month Stabiliser heifer selling for £1000. A Limousin heifer sold for £920 from MW & MR Black, Scroggs Farm and the top priced Angus was £900 heifer from G Cutherbertson of New Hutton.

Tuesday 8th August The monthly sale of Pigs, which included weaners, stores, prime and cast saw an increased entry of over 100 forward with interest from both far and wide with the most buyers in attendance for some time.

Vendors are strongly urged to castrate their pigs, especially prime and store, to gain full financial benefits from their pigs. Well-fleshed gilts and hogs were eagerly bid for in the prime section selling to a top of £198 and £180 from PK & R Woof of Stainton, with pigs from the same good home selling to 180p/kg. Prime gilts from B Walton of Great Asby sold to £145 and £128.

There was a larger entry of cast boars and sows in the market selling to a top of £110 from R Crawford of Cleator Moor. Store boars sold to a top of £72 from G Braithwaite of Appleby. Weaner pigs sold to £58 from W Routledge and £52 from D Baldwin with plenty of pens of shapely weaners selling in the forties. A gilt with four piglets sold to £105.

There was a larger entry of Prime Lambs forward today selling to a slightly easier trade, averaging 186p/kg with well-fleshed finished lambs selling to a premium and vendors who have fed lambs seeing the benefits.

Lambs sold to a top of £101 from WS Burrows of Gibraltar Farm for Charollais lambs with the same breed also selling to £100 from Trevor Sharp of Burneside. Lambs are still selling in excess of 200p/kg, topping at 220p/kg from I Ridding of Old Hutton and K Thomas of Firbank.
