Lancaster Friday 3rd March A good trade throughout once again at Lancaster for the weekly Store Cattle Sale. A variety of cattle forward today in terms of quality, flesh and age where all were eagerly bid for by a busy ring of buyers with a great buzz in the atmosphere. Darren Atkinson of Quernmore topped the market selling Angus bullocks to £1,420 closely followed by JD & GM Bracken of Catteral, selling a pair of Angus bullocks to £1,400. All steers forward today sold to a market average of £1,019 including black and white bullocks and a larger consignment of grazing cattle, now proving Lancaster is the place to sell store cattle. A pen of four Heifers from JS & KM Wilson &Son of High House topped the market selling to £1,230 for British Blues with Charolais heifers selling to £1,210 from TN Pye and Partners of Langthwaite Heights. Black and white bullocks sold to a top £1,150 from JM & AG Swarbrick of Out Rawcliffe with black and white steers averaging £732. Once again, there was an entry of just under 100 Cast/OTM Cattle at Lancaster in which more could have been sold, certainly to the advantage of the vendors with buyers looking for cows at the moment. Dairy cows sold to a top of £1,117 from Drinkall Bros of Over Wyresdale and to £1088 from EW & RM Towers of Holme Head and sold to a top price per kilo of 141.5p/kg from EE Thornton and Sons of Downlands, with all dairy cows forward selling to an average of 110p/kg. Beef cows twice sold to a top of 147.5p/kg with British Blues from R & A Easterby of Ingleton and Limousins from JS & S Atkinson of Sykes Farm. A few cast bulls in the market sold to a top of £1,390 from B &MJ Nelson of Heversham. A few over thirty month old cattle today saw British Blue bullocks from DW & NM Alderson of High Green sell to 207.5p/kg and 199.5p/kg or £1,350. A great atmosphere around the Calf ring again today at Lancaster with an entry of 60 forward with all vendors leaving pleased with their trade and buyers from near and far finding plenty of calves to fulfil their specifications. It was great to have G & ME Woodhouse of Quernmore back selling at Lancaster today having a great trade selling Blue bulls to £465 and £420 with younger British blue bull calves from Wallbank Farms of Abbeystead selling to £400, twice, with RT Halhead of Norbreck Farm also selling Blues to £400. All British blue bull calves forward selling to a market average of £382. British blue heifers sold to £395 from R & V Walmsley of Cockerham. Angus bull calves sold to £390 from G & ME Woodhouse with Angus heifer selling to £320 from Wallbank Farms of Abbeystead with no beef calves selling under £230 today at Lancaster! Get your calves into Lancaster, no point driving past the front door! Black and white bull calves sold to £185 from G & ME Woodhouse of Quernmore with others to £128 and £125 from Wallbank Farms of Abbeystead and all black and whites selling to a market average of £71. There was just a couple of five month old stirks in the market with Angus bulls selling to £485 and Limousin heifers to £445 from Ian Richardson of Woodplumpton. Calf Top Prices: HEIFER CALF – BRB: £395 Richmond Hall; £295 Norbreck Farm; £275 Hagg Farm. AA: £320 Tills Farm. BULL CALF – BRB: £465 Boldens Farm; £400 Norbreck Farm; £400 Tills Farm. There will be a special mid-month sale of 30-40 stirks next week with entries to date including 10 Aberdeen Angus steers and heifers 8 month old and 10 Aberdeen Angus Bulls and heifers 6-7 months old with more entries invited. The sale will commence at 10.15am with calves followed by Stirks.
