Lancaster Friday 3rd March A good trade throughout once again at Lancaster for the weekly Store Cattle Sale.

A variety of cattle forward today in terms of quality, flesh and age where all were eagerly bid for by a busy ring of buyers with a great buzz in the atmosphere.

Darren Atkinson of Quernmore topped the market selling Angus bullocks to £1,420 closely followed by JD & GM Bracken of Catteral, selling a pair of Angus bullocks to £1,400. All steers forward today sold to a market average of £1,019 including black and white bullocks and a larger consignment of grazing cattle, now proving Lancaster is the place to sell store cattle.

A pen of four Heifers from JS & KM Wilson &Son of High House topped the market selling to £1,230 for British Blues with Charolais heifers selling to £1,210 from TN Pye and Partners of Langthwaite Heights.

Black and white bullocks sold to a top £1,150 from JM & AG Swarbrick of Out Rawcliffe with black and white steers averaging £732.

Once again, there was an entry of just under 100 Cast/OTM Cattle at Lancaster in which more could have been sold, certainly to the advantage of the vendors with buyers looking for cows at the moment.

Dairy cows sold to a top of £1,117 from Drinkall Bros of Over Wyresdale and to £1088 from EW & RM Towers of Holme Head and sold to a top price per kilo of 141.5p/kg from EE Thornton and Sons of Downlands, with all dairy cows forward selling to an average of 110p/kg. Beef cows twice sold to a top of 147.5p/kg with British Blues from R & A Easterby of Ingleton and Limousins from JS & S Atkinson of Sykes Farm.

A few cast bulls in the market sold to a top of £1,390 from B &MJ Nelson of Heversham. A few over thirty month old cattle today saw British Blue bullocks from DW & NM Alderson of High Green sell to 207.5p/kg and 199.5p/kg or £1,350.

A great atmosphere around the Calf ring again today at Lancaster with an entry of 60 forward with all vendors leaving pleased with their trade and buyers from near and far finding plenty of calves to fulfil their specifications. It was great to have G & ME Woodhouse of Quernmore back selling at Lancaster today having a great trade selling Blue bulls to £465 and £420 with younger British blue bull calves from Wallbank Farms of Abbeystead selling to £400, twice, with RT Halhead of Norbreck Farm also selling Blues to £400. All British blue bull calves forward selling to a market average of £382. British blue heifers sold to £395 from R & V Walmsley of Cockerham.

Angus bull calves sold to £390 from G & ME Woodhouse with Angus heifer selling to £320 from Wallbank Farms of Abbeystead with no beef calves selling under £230 today at Lancaster! Get your calves into Lancaster, no point driving past the front door! Black and white bull calves sold to £185 from G & ME Woodhouse of Quernmore with others to £128 and £125 from Wallbank Farms of Abbeystead and all black and whites selling to a market average of £71.

There was just a couple of five month old stirks in the market with Angus bulls selling to £485 and Limousin heifers to £445 from Ian Richardson of Woodplumpton.

Lancaster Sale Reports Monday 6th March The weekly sale of Prime Hoggs had a similar number forward to the previous week, where a large percentage of the hoggs were hill and horned. A market average of 166p/kg achieved for 336 Hoggs.

Continental quality hoggs were short in supply with a fresh buyer present this week looking for better quality hoggs. The trade topped at £81, twice, for Charollais hoggs from P Lawrenson of Brindle. Mule hoggs sold to a top of £75.50 from T Longton and Son of Quernmore, with all Mules forward selling to an average of £71.07.

A larger entry of horned lambs in the market saw Dalesbred hoggs sell to £75 from WI & A Atkinson of Bleasdale with Swaledales from the same home selling to £68.

There was another strong Cast Sheep trade at Lancaster in which more could easily be sold to the advantage of the vendors. Mule ewes sold to £72 from AF & M Bolland of Quernmore and Dalesbred ewes sold to £43 from WI & A Atkinson of Bleasdale.

The opening sale of Sheep with Lambs at foot had an entry of over a dozen families forward. There was plenty of interest with a busy ring of buyers and onlookers to witness a strong trade on a day where many more could have been sold.

The trade topped at £180 for 2 crop Texel ewes with young Texel twins at foot, Texel ewes with young single Texel lambs sold to £140 from W Pinder of Newton in Bowland. Mule ewes with twins sold to a top of £165.

All sheep forward sold to a market average of £62 a life.

J36 Sale Reports Saturday 4th March March’s monthly sale of Machinery, implements and small tools at J36, which is held on the first Saturday of each month, had an entry of over 700 lots forward, once again.

There was something to suit everybody at this month’s sale with the trade topping at £5,000 for a 2011 Polaris 4x4 Ranger with a Herbst 14T Dump Trailer selling to £3,000. There was only one tractor forward this month, a Universal 550 from 1980, selling to £1,980. A selection of lawn mowers in the sale topped at £1,825 for a Kubota G19 and a selection of livestock trailers in the market topped at £1,750 for an Ifor Williams 12ft with decks. A Graham Edwards selling to £1,320. Livestock equipment was also good to sell and was eagerly sought after topping at £520 for a cattle crush. There was a selection of Saw benches forward for the sale selling to a top of £500 with all keenly bid for with a number of dumpy bags of logs selling on average in the region of £30 to £35 a bag if good dry wood.

The small tools and implements continue to get more and more lots each month with a good backing of buyers. Garden machinery is always popular with Stihl hedge trimmers selling to £100 and Honda Lawn mowers to £200. Tractor parts are often keenly sought after and saw a Fergie Pick up hitch achieve £115. Home and building equipment are sold at these sales with Velux windows selling to £155.

Next sales are Wednesday 15th March at Lancaster and Saturday 1st April at J36.

Tuesday 7th March There was a nice trade for Prime Hoggs at the weekly sale at J36 with an SQQ average of 170p/kg achieved.

Topping the sale at 228.6p/kg was a pen of Beltex x Hoggs from JG Harryman, The Galleon, the leading price of the day was £96 which was also achieved by JG Harryman. KJ Knight of Little Guards sold an excellent consignment of 50 Beltex x Hoggs to average £88.

A Large entry of hill bred hoggs in the market this afternoon saw Mule Hoggs sell to £79.50 and £78.50 from Redmayne Brothers with Cheviot Hoggs sold to £78.50 from S & M Cooper, Tarnside. Horned hogs topped at £77.50 for Scotch Hoggs from S & M Cooper. Rough Fell Hoggs sold to a top of £74 from J Hunter of Galloper Park, who also had Swaledales sell to £72.

There was 280 Cast Sheep forward selling to a very sharp trade with all buyers eager to purchase all types.

Strong continental ewes were eagerly bid for today selling in the region of £95+ and topping at £101 from DW Parsons, Highfield for Texel Ewes. Mule Ewes sold to a strong trade with big Mules regularly selling into the eighties topping at £85 from JG & BJ Escolme, Low Stanger Thwaite.

Horned Ewes were a sharper trade with Rough Fell Ewes topping at £71 from JE Read, Mealrigg with Swaledale ewes selling to a top of £59 from GR Park & Sons, Low Deepslack.

A large number of Cast tups in the market sold to a strong trade, topping at £119 for a Charollais from DW & NM Alderson, High Green.

Margaret Batty Retires

Coming up at North West Auctions

Margaret started work in the cafe at Lancaster Auction Mart in 1990's and worked in there for 11 years until she joined the Livestock team.

J36 Rural Auction Centre th

In September 2002 after foot and mouth, Margaret’s job at the Auction was to stand at the entrance and greet every person to enter the market with a sign in sheet which they had to fill in and then the person’s waterproofs were disinfected. After Foot and Mouth procedures were finished Margret moved into the office where she worked Mondays and Fridays sorting out any problems and signing passports.

Margaret moved to the Quernmore valley at the age of 2 when her father took over the farm at Friars Moss where they milked a few dairy cattle and had a few sheep. Margaret’s father was a director at the Lancaster Auction Market. Margaret and her husband took over the family farm in 1962. They still farm and now milk 95 Holsteins, which they calve to a beef bull and sell as stores.
