J36 Second Sale of Suckled Calves Thursday 1st November The second sale of suckled calves saw a catalogued entry of 375 which attracted buyers from throughout the Northern counties, the Midlands, Scotland and Wales, with new customers in attendance both buying and selling.

The pre-sale show was kindly judged by Mr Frank Joel of Westhouse who had an outstanding entry of 35 show calves presented before him in three classes. The Championship Rosette was awarded to an 8 month old Limousin x steer from T W Gorst, Crook which later sold for the sale’s top price of £900. The Reserve Champion was a 6 month old British Blue x steer from NA & J Temple, Ulpha which achieved £800. Strongest steers generally were £780 to £860, all steers sold averaging £710 with a large portion being 5 months old.

Heifers sold to £860 for a smart Charolais x from TM & D Dobson with an Angus x from J & M Wilson, catching many eyes selling at £800. Nicely grown heifers regularly selling between £680 and £800 with smaller, younger sorts £520 to £640, all sold averaging £595.

Young bulls sold to £870 for Limousin x from W & T Danson & Son who sold others at £850. The first prize bull from GR & A Foy being a 6 month old British Blue x selling for £760. All young bulls averaged £620, being predominantly 4 to 6 months old.

Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 2nd November The weekly sale of Store Cattle had an entry of 382 forward for the sale with another competitive trade enjoyed at Lancaster. Large short keep cattle sold to, once again, a very competitive trade with longer keep cattle slightly harder to place this week with more of these on the market and many sheds currently full as many now lying their cattle in for winter following the prolonged Autumn.

The trade topped at £1380, three times, firstly from P Lawrenson & Son, Chorley for British Blue Steers and second from A &E Clarkson, Thurnham for an Aberdeen Angus Steer. This was closely followed by J & JM Walmsley, Pilling selling Angus Steers to £1360. Limousin bullocks sold to a top of £1300 from DE & SM Moorhouse, Natland.

The heifer trade today was topped by a British Blue from P Lawrenson & Son, selling to £1170 with Angus heifers from J Tattersall, Leyland selling Angus’ to £1090.

A larger entry of OTM Cattle this week saw a very ‘back end’ show of cattle with a lot of lean cows forward with many off loading before the winter months. The large quantity of cows forward everywhere with many slaughter houses nearly full meant the trade remained very similar with Lancaster, once again, offering a very competitive ringside of buyers to ensure that all specification of cows were well bid for. Top price per kilo today was 181.5p/kg which was achieved by P & A Bell, Pilling for a Hereford Heifer. British Blue cows sold to 149.5p/kg from RJ Cardwell, Esprick closely followed by other beef cows selling in the 140p/kg mark. Young dairy cows sold to a top of 139.5p/kg with plenty of fit cows selling around the 120p/kg mark. There was an overall market average just over 100p/kg. Top price per head was £1215 for a Charolais Bull from P & SA Edmondson, Stainton.

A few less Calves on offer this week but there was still a good entry of 40 forward which sold to another good trade at Lancaster especially following on from market reports of other local centres. Vendors are strongly urged to market their calves at Lancaster. The trade was topped at £395 and £390 for British Blue bull calves from J & G Thornley, Kirkham with plenty of British Blue bulls selling in excess of the £300 mark.

British Blue heifers topped £270 from JK & B Birkett & Son, Morecambe. A larger quantity of young beef calves on the market today saw Angus bull calves sell to £225 from T & EA Garth, Bleasdale.

Black and white bull calves sold to a top of £95 from Drinkall Brothers of Over Wyresdale and more black and white rearing calves were required today to meet the demand from buyers present.

The fortnightly sale of Store Lambs had an entry of in excess of 100 forward for the sale with a variety of size forward which saw the trade top at £61.50 for Texel lambs from CM & CA Jackson, Caton.

Monday 5th November The weekly sale of Prime Lambs had a slightly smaller entry of just short of 400 this week in which more could have been sold to the advantage of the vendor with Texel lambs selling to a top of £85 from DM Cardwell, Stalmine closely followed by £84 from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof. The Suffolk trade twice topped at £82 from G Riley, Bolton-le-Sands. Once again, plenty of lambs sold in or around the £80 mark with a large quantity of 46 to 50kg lambs on the market. Texel lambs sold to a top of 185p/kg from TR Prickett. There was an overall market average of 162p/kg.

A larger entry of 80 Cast Ewes forward this week selling to another competitive trade. Suffolk ewes topped at £95 from TA Blair, Thornton with Cleveleys. The tup trade was topped by Cheviots selling £79 from A & J Smith, Ingleton. Texel ewes topped at £71 from PW & DW Roskell, Pilling. Stronger, fitter ewes sold in excess of the £50 mark selling to £66 from A & J Rhodes, Ellel and £63 from PW & DW Roskell.

A few more hill ewes on the market today saw Cheviot ewes sell to £30 from SE & J Gorst, Littledale with Swaledale selling to £25 from KM & KJ Curwen, Abbeystead.

J36 Sale Reports Thursday 1st November The fortnightly sale of Calves and Stirks at J36 had a smaller offering forward this week with a better trade than anticipated with plenty of buyers ringside. Topping the trade today was British Blue bulls from R Morris-Eyton & Son, Whicham. Angus bull calves sold to a top of £295 and £290 from DR & C Galbraith, Grayrigg. Plenty of well-grown beef calves sold in the mid two hundreds. There was a buoyant trade for Black and White calves with these being well bid for selling to a top of £90 from RH & J Clark, Far Audlands.

An offering of Stirks on the market today saw Limousin heifers sell to a top of £500 from GD Tyson, Haverigg with black and white stirks topping at £260 from W Atkinson & Son, Crook.

Calf Top Prices: Bull Calf: British Blue - £370 Beck Side, £270 Ravens Lodge, £210 Sunny Bank. Aberdeen Angus - £295, £290 Sunny Bank, £280, £255, £240 Beck Side.

A larger entry of 47 Cast Cows forward at the fortnightly sale saw a larger number of leaner cows presented than the previous sales. Beef cows sold to 125p/kg for Limousin x from G H Jones and J & J Postlethwaite, others regularly selling between 105p/kg and 115p/kg for further feeding. Heavy dairy cows sold around the 90p/kg to 110p/kg mark, with leaner sorts 75p/kg to 85p/kg. Top grossing cow was £873 for a Limousin x from J & J Postlethwaite and top grossing dairy cow was £845 from R & J Dodgson. Several cull bulls were forward selling to 100p/kg or £1014 from W Caley & Son.

The monthly sale of Beef Breeding cattle saw an entry of predominantly older cows with calves forward, selling to £1020 for a Limousin x cow with a Limousin bull calf from TLB & J Knowles. In-calf Hereford x heifers achieved £900 with Limousin x heifers to £850. Bulling heifers sold to £800 for Limousin x and pure Herefords.

Beef Breeding Top Prices: Breeding Bull: Hereford - £840 Hall Carleton Farm.

In Calf Cow: Limousin - £850 Longlands.

Bulling Heifer: Hereford - £800 Lambrigg Head. Limousin - £800 Lambrigg Head.

Cow And Calf: Limousin - £1020 High Borrowbridge. Other - £500 Scale Hook Farm.

In Calf Heifer: Hereford - £900 Redbank Farm. Shorthorn - £900 Redbank Farm.

A pleasing entry of over 100 Store Cattle followed the suckled calves with buyers present to compete for all types. Steers sold to £900 for a Charolais x from T Longton & Son with other stronger sorts (14m – 18m) selling between £800 and £880 and wintering steers were £680 to £750. Several dairy bred steers were forward today with black and whites selling to £530 and younger sorts selling between £440 and £500.Store heifers topped at £880 for Limousin x from Pearson & Jackson and a British Blue x from I Dobson, other feeding heifers generally were £750 to £850. Younger heifers for wintering were £520 to £680.

Tuesday 6th November The weekly sale of Prime Lambs had a larger entry forward this week just short of 1200, which sold to an overall market average of 163p/ kg with an SQQ average of 168p/kg with lambs just under the 40kg mark selling to an average of 172p/kg. The trade topped at £93 for Texel lambs from J Twigge, Lindale with Beltex lambs selling to £92.50 and £92 from JG Harryman, Hawkshead. Plenty of white faced lambs sold in the mid to late eighties. It was good to have plenty of those good conformation Beltex lambs on offer today selling around the 200p/kg mark. These topped at 212p/kg from SP Pease, Underley with others selling to 210p/kg and 209p/kg from JG Harryman. Suffolk lambs sold to a top of £79.50 from M Rendell of Milnthorpe.

More Hill lambs on the market today saw Mules sell to £73.50 and £72 WI & A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale with other Mules to £72 from G Rawsthorne, Nether Kellet. There was more horned lambs on offer this week saw 42kg Dalesbred sell to £68.50 from BD Gill, Ingleton.

There was plenty of demand for light weight lambs weighing between 35kg and 38kg, with lambs weighing between 40kg and 44kg easiest to sell with a large quantity of heavy weight lambs on the market.

The weekly sale of Cast Ewes had, once again, an entry in excess of 600 forward.

There were fewer powerful sheep on the market this week with the trade ever so slightly easier on the week. Topping the trade today was Beltex tups from R & AC Harper, Grayrigg. Texel ewes sold to a top of £103 for E Parker, Cragg Bank with plenty of Continental ewes around the £90 mark. Cheviot Mule ewes sold to a top of £77 from KR & CA Williamson, Barbon. Mule ewes sold to a top of £66 twice from E & A Thompson, New Hutton and PK & R Woof, Stainton. Horned ewes sold to a top of £63 from TLB & J Knowles, Selside. There was a selection of goats on offer today from B Heaps, Charnock Richards selling to £66 and £58.
