Weekly Sale of Cast Sheep & Store Lambs

LANCASTER CHRISTMAS CHAMPION PRIME LAMBS FROM GR & A FOY & SON PRIME LAMBS Lancaster Auction today hosted its annual Christmas Show and Sale of Prime Lambs. There was a tremendous entry of forty pens of lambs forward for our judge, Michael Lomax to cast his expert eye over. The championship rosette was awarded to GR & A Foy, Conder Green for impressively the seventh year running. This pen of five Dutch Texel lambs weighing 43kg sold to 307p/kg or £132 with the Reserve Champions, also from the same home weighing 42kg sold to £121 purchased by Michael Lomax on behalf of Gregory Williams Butchers of Lancaster. The first prized pair of Beltex sired lambs was also consigned by GR & A Foy, Conder Green weighing 40kg selling to £123 with the second prize pair being awarded to PD Pye, Abbeystead selling to £121 purchased by Michael Lomax on behalf of Kennedy Butchers, Morecambe who also purchased the third prized pair of Beltex lambs from GR & A Foy, Conder Green for £119. The upland classes saw the Mule class won by RH & C Ayrton, Abbeystead selling 45kg mules to £93.50. The Horned lambs first place rosette was awarded to Swaledale lambs from T Ayrton & Son, Over Wyresdale selling to £80 weighing 39kg.

The Cheviot lamb class was won by Nathan Allen of Low Moor Howe selling 42kg Cheviots to £90.

A bumper entry of 925 lambs forward was met by strong demand from buyers with an overall market average of 208p/kg with many consignments of hill lambs forward this week. There was an SSQ average of 212p/kg.

The trade saw plenty of pens of continental heavy weight lambs regularly selling in excess of 200p/kg. Handy weight lambs continue to be in strong demand with continental lambs often selling in excess of the 200p/kg mark. Mule lambs regularly selling over the 200p/kg mark with horned lambs selling in the region of 200p/kg.

CAST SHEEP Lancaster enjoyed a strong trade once again with cast sheep. Leading the way was Beltex ewes from A Fare, Blackpool selling to £137 and £123. Texel ewes peaked at £129 from J & H Huddleston, Brookhouse. Plenty of strong continental ewes selling between £105 and £120. Mule ewes sold to £77 from MJ & LC Lund, Quernmore followed by £76 from HJ & BE Kelsall, Gressingham. Horned ewes sold to £77 for Rough Fells from G Blacklidge, Chorley.

More tups coming forward which topped at £120 for Texels from Fred Carr, Arkholme. Cheviot tups sold to £109 and £106 from A & J Smith, Ingleton.

STORE LAMBS The fortnightly sale of store lambs at Lancaster consisted mainly of forward short keep lambs selling to a very buoyant trade as seen at many store lamb sales with an average of £80.61. It was Suffolk lambs that led the way selling to £94 from PG Thornton, Scorton with others to £90.50 from HJ & BE Kelsall, Gressingham. Texel store lambs sold to £89 from PD Anderton, Scorton with Continental lambs selling to £86.50 from JM Kelsall and Son, Quernmore. Cheviot lambs sold to £74.50 from SE & J Gorst, Littledale.

Christmas Show & Sale of Prime Pigs, Prime Cattle & Prime Lambs Weekly Sale of Cast Sheep PRIME PIGS North West Auctions held its Christmas Prize Show and Sale of Prime Pigs which saw 7 pairs put before the judge, who awarded the Championship rosette to a pair of pure Pietrain boars from NJ Wilkinson, Barrow in Furness weighing 90kg and later selling to a market topping price of £130 and purchased by Browns Quality Meats, Lindal as a Christmas treat for their customers.

Prime gilts sold to a top price of £120 for the third prize pen of Large White x from D Lord, Preesall who sold others at £118.

Outwith the show, gilts sold to £106 for pure Pietrain from NJ Wilkinson, Barrow in Furness with Gloucester Old Spot x Pietrain selling to £105 from AT Threlkeld Ltd, Satterthwaite and Saddleback x boars selling to £100 from D & DW Prickett, Farleton. Lighter weight pigs sold to £81 for Pietrain x gilts from JB & S Stirland, Penrith. With Saddleback x selling to £80 from AT Threlkeld Ltd and Large White x to £78 from M Bennett, Penrith.

Well finished white prime pigs were generally selling at 110p/kg – 115p/kg, with coloured pigs 75p/kg – 90p/kg. Buyers continue to show preference towards gilts and hogs and caution towards under finished prime boars.

Cull sows sold to £65 from HMP Wymott for pure Saddlebacks. Weaners proved to be a very selective trade with Large White x gilts selling to £21 from M Eastham, Dalton with others at £11.

Christmas Show & Sale of Prime Cattle & Prime Lambs Weekly Sale of Cast Sheep PRIME CATTLE ~ ‘A trade which certainly put the ‘Beef Back’ Back ’ into NWA’ NWA’ What a display of cattle, showcasing the quality of primestock that this livestock area can produce. Our thanks must go to today’s judge George Cropper of Sanderson Butchers.

With all the classes judged, we had a tremendous line up of all first prize winners for the Championship. George took his time and was complimentary on all of the animal placed in front of him.

The Championship was awarded to lot 9 a British Blue heifer shown by JA Barnett, Shap she later went on to make 455ppkg grossing £2,494 purchased by Kitson Butchers of Yarm. Reserve honours was awarded to lot 6 a Limousin heifer from F & B Smith, Westhouse, she made 385ppkg grossing £2,002 and was purchased by Ian Brown from Browns Quality Meats of Ulverston.

JJ Crichton, Egremont with his first prize bullock peaked at 280ppkg which was purchased by Country Style Meats of Lancaster.

Other noted prices come from AR & BJ Thompson, Selside who sold their second prize heifer to 330ppkg purchased by Woods Farm Shop of Preston. Messrs Barnett’s run of cattle averaged 345ppkg grossing £1,999. All the prime cattle forward for todays sale averaging a tremendous 281ppkg.

The sale was a huge success with trade noted as being very strong, both vendors and purchasers leaving happy.

PRIME LAMBS North West Auctions held its annual Christmas Show & Sale of Prime lambs with a bumper entry of 42 pens forward for our judge George Cropper of Sanderson Butchers, Accrington who we thank for his time and expertise. The quality on offer continues to improve each year and a big thank you goes to all our vendors and buyers for there continued support.

The Championship rosette was awarded to the first prize pair of Beltex lambs from Josh Geary, Milton Keynes. This much-admired pair weighed 47kg and went onto sell for £280 or 595p/kg to our judge George Cropper. Our judge also purchased the Reserve Champions and Second prize pair of Beltex lambs at £200 or 476p/kg from Andrew Geary, Milton Keynes. Rounding off a great day for the Geary family they also sold the third prized pair of Beltex lambs weighing 43kg to £155 or 360p/kg and the first prize pen of five Lowland lambs weighing 38kg selling to £126. The second prized pen of five Lowland sired lambs were from JG & PH Thompson, Selside weighing 39kg selling to £138 or 353p/kg. All of which were purchased by our judge George Cropper for his shop Sanderson Butchers, Accrington.

The Upland classes saw some strong classes forward with the Mule class won by WI & A Atkinson and Son, Bleasdale selling 50kg lambs to £99. The Horned class was won by B & HM Wilson, Selside selling 41kg lambs to £80. The Rough Fell class sponsored by the Rough Fell Sheep Breeders Association saw the first and second prize rosettes awarded to Amy Harrison, Kentmere selling 53kg to £98 and 44kg to £85. The Cheviot class saw the first prize rosette awarded to Nathan Allen of Low Moor Howe selling 45kg lambs to £99.

A bumper entry of lambs forward this week saw 1714 forward selling to an overall market average of 215p/kg with handy weight lambs averaging 219p/kg. This average included a large number upland bred lambs. This number of lambs and more are required each week to maintain the good number of buyers present.

Heavy weight Continental and Suffolk lambs sold in excess of the 200p/kg easily, all over 50kg lambs selling to an average of 206p/kg. Cutting type lambs between 44-48kg and well fleshed in strong demand often selling around the 210p/kg mark, many consignments of mules in this bracket often selling in the early nineties. Handy weight lambs continue to be in big demand and look best sold with many going for export. These lambs regularly selling in excess of the 225p/kg mark for well fleshed continental lambs. Best handy weight Beltex lambs sold in excess of the 300p/kg mark, selling to 335p/kg from JG & PH Thompson, Selside. A larger number of light weight lambs forward including many consignments of horned lambs often selling in the region of 200p/kg.

CAST SHEEP A smaller show of cast ewes forward, with J36 enjoying another strong trade. Heavy ewes would be £5-£10 dearer on the week.

Texel ewes again lead the way with a top of £113 from J Woodburn & Ptnrs, Mansriggs with others from the same good home selling to £108. A strong show of mule ewes forward with a top of £92 from DM & D Cook, Ulverston with bigger mule ewes selling into the £80 mark. All hill ewes were well bid for, Cheviot ewes sold to £86 from J Allonby & Son, Grayrigg with Rough Fell ewes selling to £84 from JE Read, Hutton Roof. Good to see Swaledale ewes back into the £60 mark with a top of £69 from JF & AW Sutton, Longsleddale with others to £64 from JA Bennett, Longsleddale. All Swaledale ewes forward averaged £48.

A keen ringside of buyers for all types of cast rams. BFL rams topped the sale at £128 from Fishwick Bros, Longsleddale with other BFL rams selling to £125 from DJ Clarke, Underbarrow. Beltex rams sold to £109 from J Allonby & Son, Grayrigg, with strong Swaledale rams from JF & AW Sutton, Longsleddale selling to £84.

Fortnightly Sale of Store Lambs North West Auctions J36 held its fortnightly sale of Store Lambs with an entry of 2575 forward. All specifications of lambs today met with a strong demand. Best Continental short keep lambs selling in the late 80s, medium keep lambs regularly selling towards the £80 mark, with long term lambs regularly selling towards £70. There was a larger number of horned lambs in the market today which saw best horned lambs selling regularly towards the £70 mark with well fleshed ones beyond this.

Top of the market at £95, were Texel lambs from WI Barrow & Sons, Dunnerdale followed by others at £92 from S Procter, Selside and S Gibson, Underbarrow, with plenty of other Texel lambs selling around the £90 area. Beltex lambs peaked at £90 from BJ Bowness, Kendal with Suffolks selling to £89.50 from S Harryman, Keswick and Charollais lambs to £89 from M Archer & Son, Bolton le Sands.

Upland lambs saw Mules sell to £88 with Cheviots to £87 from Messrs Buckle, Kirkby Stephen. Rough Fell lambs topped at £84.50 from A & B Pickthall, Hincaster. The trade saw plenty of strong Mules sell in excess of the £80 mark. Swaledale lambs sold to a top of £66.50 from JF Benson, Skelwith Bridge with plenty of pens of Swaledales selling in the early 60s.

CALVES & WEANLINGS Lancaster had a smaller entry of calves forward this week as many consignors held off for the annual Christmas show and sale next week, with not as many quality calves on offer and in general a younger selection forward.

The market was topped by a British Blue weanling bull from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale selling to £455. The consignment of British Blue bull calves from J & G Thornley, Roseacre sold to £430, £420 and £410 with heifers from the same home selling to £385 and £370. The consignment of British Blue bull calves from T & CM Kelsall and Sons, Chipping topped at £395. Plenty of stronger Continental calves selling in excess of the three hundred pound mark. All British Blue bulls averaged £317.

Native calves sold to £380 for Angus bulls from AJ & AJ Gibbons, St Michaels on Wyre with others from J & G Thornley, Roseacre selling to £360. A lot of strong quality native heifer calves met plenty of demand selling to a top of £350 for Welsh Black and £300 for Herefords from AJ & AJ Gibbons, St Michaels on Wyre. Angus heifers peaked at £330 from J & G Thornley, Roseacre.

Black and white bull calves sold to a top of £128 from Wallbank Farms, Abbeystead with plenty of strong rearing types over £100 mark with all black and whites forward averaging £99.17.

STORE CATTLE Lancaster had its weekly sale of store cattle with another strong trade. Short keep cattle continue to be a strong trade with longer term cattle eagerly bid for today as many other market centre numbers begin to tighten and Lancaster continues to boast a good number of over 250 weekly. Once again all store cattle forward averaged well over the thousand pound mark.

DE & SM Moorhouse, Natland took top spot this week selling a Charolais bullock to £1410 whom also sold Limousin bullocks to £1300. Other Continental bullocks sold to £1370 for British Blues from K & DE Woodhouse, Ellel. Limousin bullocks sold to £1340 from R Capstick & Son, Ingleton. Native bullocks sold to a top of £1370 for Angus from S Kellet and Sons, Pilling. Hereford bullocks sold to £1310 from D & N Davis, Nateby with other Angus bullocks selling to £1300 from L Parsons and Son, Levens. The heifer trade peaked at £1270 for British Blues from M Shepherd and Son, Pilling.
