J36 - Lads Night Out Thursday 31st August The Lads Night Out at Junction 36 this year saw the largest entry forward for the sale, with 848 entered, with Rams forward from across the UK, in turn attracting customers looking for both quantity and quality.

A fantastic night with a great buzz around both sale rings, saw vendors leave satisfied with trade and purchasers happy with the quality forward for sale.

In the pre-sale Show, the judges faced a daunting task seeing in some classes as many as 35 tups pulled out for judging. Following all of the individual breed classes, an Overall Champion is awarded, judged by all of the show judges. The eventual Champion being awarded to the Texel Shearling Ram from GM Wilson of Grange View Road and the Reserve Champion to the X Bred Shearling Ram from ME Wannop & Sons of Heaton Hall.

Top price of the day, with a tremendous consignment of Texel Rams was John Kelsall of Summerlands, his 2nd Prize Shearling going on to achieve £1200. Messrs Kelsall’s run of 11 Shearlings went on to average £558.18, with their pen of Rams proving to be very popular with prospective purchasers.

The next top price also for a Texel Shearling Ram forward from W&MM Case of Plumpton Cottage, went on to achieve £1150, with their pen of 10 Texel Shearlings achieving an average of £688. The Overall Champion a Texel Shearling Ram from GM Wilson of Grange View Road, went on to sell later on in the day for £800.

Topping the Beltex section at £1100 was a pure bred from PD&PJ Mason of Coat Green Farm, with other rams in the prizes, Messrs Mason’s rams sold well with their 19 forward averaging £451. 1st Prize Ram in the Beltex section from LM&C Whitaker of Moorland Cottage, an extremely well-muscled homebred ram went on to sell for £900.

The Beltex x and X Bred Rams looked well sold, with this section proving extremely popular in the sale. Top price coming from ME Wannop & Sons Ltd with their Reserve Champion, a Beltex x Texel Shearling Ram going on to achieve £1100. Other noted rams forward in this section being the 2nd prize ram from AR&BJ Thompson of Poppy Farm achieving £950 and WW&D Boow of Corney Hall Farm selling for £1000.

Suffolk Rams & Females attracted strong interest, with the 1st prize Ram Lamb, a strong well grown tup from TA Blair of Thornfleet achieving £600. The Flock Dispersal from PJ&EA Wharton of High Hall, attracted strong interest for both well-bred Rams & Females. The 10 Shearling Rams forward topping at £650, with others at £600 to average £480.00. The 24 females forward for sale, selling to £440 for a pair, with others at £420 and £400, the female averaging £265 for all sold.

Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 1st September The weekly sale of Store Cattle, once again, had an entry in excess of 300 forward, selling to a decent trade and it was good to see one or two buyers returning round the ring. Well-fleshed cattle and stylish well-bred cattle always sell to a premium at Lancaster with a larger quantity of Black and Whites forward today meeting plenty of demand.

Fifteen Cattle sold in excess of £1400 topping twice at £1520, firstly by a British Blue Bullock from MS Dugdale & Sons of Tewitfield and then a pen of Aberdeen Angus and Limousin Bullocks from T & M Halhead of Priest Hutton.

A pen of Charolais Bullocks from RH Dodgson of Burton in Lonsdale sold to £1490. Vendors are, once again, reminded that buyers like to purchase cattle batched in larger groups.

Heifers sold to £1380 for Simmentals from KG & LM Park of Witherslack. Nearly 20% of the Cattle sold in excess of £1200 today. There was a larger entry of Cast Cows forward this week, with 92 forward selling to an overall market average of 121p/kg.

OTM Heifers continue to sell well at Lancaster with heifers topping at 194.5p/kg or £1137 for Herefords from P & A Bell of Pilling. Black and White OTM Heifers sold to 171.5p/kg and 164.5p/kg from E & N Wright and Sons of Roeburndale East with other Black and White Heifers from B Butterfield & Son of Burton in Kendal sold to 169.5p/kg of £1074.

Beef Cows sold to a top of 179.5p/kg from JA & J Harper of Killington with Limousin Cows.

Black and White cows sold to a top of 144.5p/kg or £1353 from AW & AM Park & Sons of Ellel.

There was 40 Calves for the Weekly Calf Sale at Lancaster this week selling to a top price of £370 twice, firstly for Aberdeen Angus Bull Calves from David & Eileen Wallbank of Over Wyresdale and secondly by J & G Thornley Ltd, Roseacre with a British Blue Bull.

Aberdeen Angus Bulls sold to £360 and Hereford Bulls £355. J & R Newsham and Son of Conder Green sold 16 days Simmental Bull Calves to £300.

Black and White Bull Calves sold to a top of £130 and £115 from D & E Wallbank of Over Wyresdale with Drinkall Bros of Over Wyresdale selling to £115 and WN & S Smith & Sons of Cockerham achieved £115 and £120. The second sale of Breeding Sheep and breeding rams at Lancaster took place on Friday 1st September. Gimmer shearlings sold to a top of £148 for Texel x Beltex from S & SE Capstick of Warton with Texel x mules shearlings from EI, EA & TW Wilson of Flookburgh selling to £135 and mules selling to £130 twice. Mule one crop ewes sold to £125 and £120 from PD Anderton of Scorton with aged Texel ewes selling to £98 from A & J Rhodes of Ellel.

Just a small handful of breeding rams forward saw Beltex x Texel tups shearlings sell to £200 and rams lambs to £150 from S & SE Capstick of Warton.

Lancaster Sale Reports Monday 4th September The largest entry of Spring Lambs forward at Lancaster for some time with the trade better than first thought, it may have been because of the end of the Qurbani festival on Sunday many companies were unsure how many lambs were required or not wanting sheep.

There was an overall market average 167p/kg with well-fleshed heavy lambs easiest to sell. Texel lambs topped at £90 and £86 both from GR Newsham of Galgate. Texel lambs sold to 202p/kg from MJ Shepherd of New Biggin and 198p/kg from C & B Lowther of Over Wyresdale. Suffolk lambs sold to a top of £83 twice from PM & ST Entwistle of Abbeystead and DJ Casson & Son of Slyne. Mule and Mashams sold to a top of £70.50 from BD Gill of Ingleton. The under finished lambs were tough to place and sold to a store trade with buyers in the market to purchase these types of lambs.

There was an entry of 150 Cast Sheep forward selling to a very similar sort of trade to the previous ewes with more leaner type of ewes in the market today. Texel ewes sold to a top of £92 JM Sanderson of Lower Highfield with James Sanderson of the same home selling Texel ewes to £91. Mule ewes topped at £71 from WTC Farms of Preston. Horned ewes saw Dalesbred from BD Gill of Ingleton sell to £51 while Swaledales from James Whewell of Scorton topped at £45.

J36 Sale Reports Thursday 31st August A sale typical of the time of year for Store Cattle, although all cattle sold well, and more could have been sold to the vendors advantage. The sale day top price for a pair of Angus Steers 19 months old were forward from RR&M Bamber of Barkin House, achieving £970 per head.

Another pen of 3 Angus Steers 15mo from the same home also sold for £960. All Steers forward sold for a sale day average of £815.45. Top price in the heifer section, a pair of British Blue Heifers sold for £940 from MJ Waller of Carlingwha. All heifers forward averaging £820.71.

All cattle forward looking well sold. The next sale is the Annual Prize Show & Sale of Continental Store Cattle, a renowned sale for both quality and quantity which is on Thursday 28th September, entries close on Wednesday 20th September.

Messrs Clarke also achieving 139.5p/kg for another B+W and Messrs Park selling Flekviehs to 139.5p and 137.5p. One bull forward today, a Hereford achieving 99.5p/kg or £1289.52 from A&B Pickthall of Bradley Farm.

The next sale of Cull Cows, due to the Westmorland County Show, will be held on Thursday 28th September. Outside of the show, the top price of the day being achieved twice at £103 was for Beltex Lambs from MA&JA Winn of High Underbrow and from GH Bell of Red Lodge. Top price per kilo at 235.7p/kg from RJ&P Nicholson & Son of Green Lane Ends Farm also for Beltex Lambs. An overall average of 168.39p/kg being achieved for just short of 1400 lambs forward, very much in line with the current trade regionally.

The weekly sale of Cast Ewes had a similar number of just shy of 600 cast sheep forward. There was a tougher trade today with the majority been plain to lean ewes and a shortage of heavy fit ewes in the market. Top price of the day coming for J&E Nuttall of Low Bendrigg Farm for a pen of Texel x Ewes selling for £100.

The majority of Mule ewes forward recently weaned and proving hard to sell, topping at £64 for several pens forward.
