Weekly report & newsletter NWA J36 Suckled Calf Sale The second sale of Suckled Calves saw an abundance of new and existing customers in attendance from throughout the Northern counties. Prices rose to £1,000 for the champion, a Lim x steer from C I Briggs, High Wray. A strong trade saw steers generally £750-£820 for calves averaging 6 mo. Heifers sold to £780 for a pen of Charolais x, with most achieving £650-£740. Bulls achieved £1,000 for a pure Lim from W M & J E Shuttleworth, with others at £940.

Older store cattle, saw short keep steers regularly over £1,000, with heifers £800+.

Cows and calves achieved £1,600 for a pure Limousin cow and calf from T, L, B & J Knowles, with British Blue x at £1,480.

NWA Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 31st October A smaller entry of OTM Cattle forward this week with a lot more plainer and lean cows on show with well fleshed cows short of numbers to meet buyer’s requirements. OTM steers from TE & A Galbraith of Endmoor sold to a top 194.5ppk for a Simmental. Bulls topped at 184.5ppk for a 31 month old Limousin bull from A & J Staveley of The Hill. Cast heifers continue to sell well at Lancaster selling to a top price of 167.5ppk for black and whites from ME Wannop & Sons of Heaton Hall. Limousin cast cows sold to a top price of 124.5ppk from RH & C Ayrton of Ouzelthorn. Black and whites sold to 117.5ppk from J-CH-JG Bland of Arnside Tower. All OTMs forward sold to a market average of 95ppk.

There was another strong catalogued entry of Store Cattle forward at Lancaster selling to a sharper trade with a good number of decent cattle forward. Big good quality bullocks sold to a sharper trade today with a consignment of good from Messrs Dugdale & Son of Tewitfield Farm selling to £1460 for a couple of Limousin steers with others from the same home selling to £1380. Native bred cattle continue to be in strong demand and easily sold at Lancaster with a large Angus steer from EA & P Duckett & Sons of Holme Farm selling to £1300. A strong demand for better sorts of cattle with a shapely British blue heifer from Martin and Julie Winn of High Underbarrow selling to £1200 at 15 months old.

Vendors are once again strongly advised to become Farm Assured as those selling non-farm assured cattle were penalised today.

Lancaster boasted another strong entry of just short of sixty Calves and Stirks. Strong beef bull calves sold to a good trade, topping at £320 from W N & D Smith & Sons of Cocker House with a month old Angus. Other beef bull calves sold in the mid to late £200’s. British blue heifer calves sold to a top price of £220 from ME Wannop & Sons of Heaton Hall. Black and white bull calves continue to sell to a strong demand at Lancaster with best sorts of rearing calves selling to a top of £122 from JR Pye of Hatters Farm with other best sorts easily selling over £100. All black and whites forward averaged £71/head.

A good entry of quality stirks met a strong demand at Lancaster. Eight month old British blue heifer sold to £615 from AR Tattersal of Chorley who also sold six month Hereford and Angus steers to £605. Suckler bred 5 month old British blue steers from RH & C Ayrton & Son of Ouzelthorn Farm sold to £595 and £585.

Congratulations go to Phil Halhead and the team from Norbreck Farm for winning the Dugdale Nutrition October Calf Competition, selling a Charolais Bull at 1month 9days to £400. Store Lambs continue to sell to a strong trade at Lancaster. There were a number of buyers around the ring and plenty more lambs could have been easily sold. Lambs sold to a top price of £65.50 for good quality Beltex cross lambs from Peter Pye of Marl House with other lambs from same home selling to £63. Short keep Texel lambs sold to £64 from Peter Thornton of Cliftons Farm. Medium keep mules sold regularly between £55 and £57 with long term Swaledale wethers selling to £32.

Monday 2nd November Prime Lambs forward this week sold to a much improved trade, some 8ppk better than last week, averaging 168.5ppk. Lambs sold to a top of 196ppk for lightweight lambs from D & DW Prickett, Farleton House. Top price per head was £83 from FK & F Woodhouse with a pen of heavy weight Suffolks. Mules sold to a top price of £74 per head for well fleshed sorts from David & Sam France, Isle of Skye. Others from Bryan Carter, Cragg End sold to £73/head. Overall average for mules 39-45kg was £69.90. Standard weight Suffolks sold to £78.50 and £77.50 from HJ & BE Kelsall, Gressingham. Horned lambs sold to £68 for 40kg lambs from Ken Kelsall, Brown Brook. Once again more lambs could have been sold to vendors’ advantage.

Less numbers of Cast Ewes forward sold to a strong trade, topping at £96 for a single Texel ewe from CR Eastwood, Bentham. Closely following was AJ Ellis of Sandy Hill with a pen of 9 Texels selling to £88, overall average of £80.40 for all Texels forward. Mules and Mashams sold to £69/head again from CR Eastwood. Overall average of £53.59 for all cast sheep sold.

An entry of 7 Prime Bulls and 1 Clean Heifer all sold to full value, topping at 209.5ppk for a nice 520kg Limousin from JA Airey, New Hutton, another Limousin from the same home sold to 204.5ppk. Dairy bred bulls sold to 169.5ppk for a 530kg Montbelliarde from GA Haston & Son, Lane House. The only clean heifer forward, a 500kg British Blue, sold to 191.5ppk from P & A Bell, Village Farm.

NWA J36 Sale Reports Thursday 30th October The weekly sale of Calves at J36 was a strong trade with buyers going away happy with the quality of calves they bought and vendors equally happy with the price. A good show of beef calves forward with credit going to the vendors on the quality of calves produced. Selling to top price of £415 (twice) were 8 week old British Blue bulls from JS & I Wilson of Monk Foss with British Blue bulls also selling to £390 twice from JW & D Robinson & Sons of Hollins Farm.

A good show of beef bull calves forward sold to an impressive average of £349. Beef heifers continue to sell to a strong trade for best sorts topping at £390 for a British Blue heifer only 6 weeks old from DJ & S Stainton of Beck House with younger smaller types of heifers slightly harder to sell although all heifer calves sold to an average of £219. The trade for black and white calves continues to improve week on week with fresh buyers around the ring all the time. Black and white calves sold to a top price of £122 from M H & A RRobinson of Homescales. A consignment of pure British Friesians from the Late Mr Armitstead sold to a top price of £110 for a three week old calf with others selling between £90 and £100. All Black and white bull calves averaged £83.

Store Lambs sold to a top price of £71.50 for best Texels, with short keep lambs generally £65-£69. Mediums £57-£62, with hill lambs £59.50 for Mules.

Once again, a full ringside of buyers competed for 68 Cast Cows, with well fleshed cows finding strong demand, whilst leaner sorts were harder to sell. Black and white cows topped at 127.5p/kg for a well fed cow from T S & S M Park of Millom which sold to L Fell of Settle. Continental Cows topped at 129.5p/kg, for a Limousin Cow from W E Parker of Howgill. Over-age cattle and clean cattle topped at 194.5p/kg for a British Blue Bullock from D E & S M Moorhouse of Natland.

The sale of Dairy Cattle saw a top price of £1,800 achieved for a pedigree heifer from K E Robinson, Kiln Hall, followed by a fresh 3rd calved cow giving 8 gallons from C G Birkett, Netherbeck Barn. In-calf heifers achieved £1000.

Saturday 1st November - Special Collective Machinery Sale On Saturday 1st November North West Auctions held a special collective sale of Farm Machinery and equipment with a special collection of Vintage and bygones.

In excess of 40 Tractors and vehicles were included within the sale ranging from Modern 150hp tractors to 60 year old fully restored MF Tractors.

A Marshall 802 (2wd) sold for £3000 with a part restored Ford 3000 (2wd) achieving £2700, a MF135 sold at £2500. An on farm condition McCormick (1964) Tractor c/w loader sold for £700 with a petrol grey Ferguson at £1500.

An antique straw chopper achieved £85 with buyers showing keen interest for restoration projects. Perhaps the surprise of the sale was a Cheese Press selling for £200.

Modern Machinery sold to a top price of £10,500 for a 2003 reg McCormick Tractor, a Mitsubishi L200 truck £2700, Diet Feeder £1750, IW Flat Trailer £1650.

Tuesday 4th November Prime Lambs £2/Kilo On Tuesday 4th November North West Auctions held their weekly sale of Primestock at J36 where some 3,033 prime sheep were forward. Once again some fresh faces attended to sell their sheep to a very competitive ringside of fourteen active buyers ensuring all classes of sheep met a strong trade seeing a rise of some 9p per kilo on the week.

Prime Lambs topped at £2 per kilo for a pen of Beltex x lambs from J Bargh & Son of Morecambe. Commercial first cross lambs regularly 185-195p/kg. A good show of well fed Mule lambs were forward today topping at 169.80p/kg from J & JA Burrow of Grayrigg and a top price of £77 per head for a pen from F & SA Edmondson of Ulverston with all Mules forward averaging 160.73p/kg. Heavy lambs also saw a rise on the week of £4 - £5 per head.

All lambs forward averaged 169p/kg with an SQQ of 172.4p/kg.
