J36 Easter Show of Spring Lambs Tuesday 4th April The Easter show and sale of Spring Lambs saw an entry of 43 forward. The pre-sale show was expertly judged by Michael Lomax of Milnthorpe who had a strong line up of Continental and Native/Suffolk lambs to judge. The pre-sale show champion was awarded to B & AC Barnes of Hawkin Hall with a Dorset x lamb with the reserve champion being awarded to JD & V Towers of Camp House with a Beltex x lamb.

A buoyant trade was had with all lambs eagerly bid for selling to a top of £149 or 346p/kg for the champion from B & AC Barnes selling to the judge Michael Lomax on behalf of Higginsons Butchers of Grange-over-Sands. The reserve champion from JD & V Towers sold to £129 for a Beltex x lamb selling to Irving Butchers of Ulverston. Lambs weighing between 39-45kg were in the strongest demand and best to sell, selling to a market average of 253p/kg. Heavy 46kg plus lambs sold to a market average of 222p/kg with an overall market average of 245p/kg.

Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 31st March There was an entry of 252 Store Cattle forward at today’s weekly sale at Lancaster. This week’s sale saw more fleshed cattle forward with a good trade throughout the sale. The trade topped at £1470 for a pair of Aberdeen Angus Bullocks from JM Clark, New Hall Farm who also had Angus bullocks selling to £1430 and £1420. The Heifer trade was also topped by JM Clark who sold an Aberdeen Angus Heifer to £1340.

Black and Whites sold to a top of £1060 from SH & LE Birkett, Stubb Hall Farm which was followed by MH & J Parker who sold two black and white bullocks at £1000. Limousin Bullocks sold to £1360, twice, from DM & SE Moorhouse, High House Farm and JM Clark, New Hall Farm, this was followed by PM & ST Entwistle selling bullocks to £1270. All Limousin Bullocks forward averaged £1123.81. British Blue Bullocks from KG & LM Park, Low Fell End sold a top of £1350 and £1340 from M Shepherd & Sons of Pasture House Farm with all Blue Bullocks averaging £1201.88. Herefords sold to a top of £1230 from AJ & D Knowles, Simmentals to £1220 from KG & LM Park and Montbeliarde Bullocks sold to £1290 from D Vose.

W & J Parkinson of Cross House Farm sold Limousin Heifers to £1310 and D Vose sold heifers to £1300 with all Limousin Heifers forward averaging £1016.67. British Blue Heifers sold to £1190 and £1140 from WT Eastham & Sons, Wood Nook Farm and MJ & LC Lund sold Herefords to £1010 and Charolais to £1200. Grazing Cattle were sharper on the week with more buyers looking for cattle ready for spring. All bullocks forward sold to a market average of £1055 with heifers averaging £982.

There was 80 Cast Cows in the market selling to a dearer trade with all OTM Cattle forward selling to a market average of 120p/kg with black and white cows averaging 109p/kg. Beef cows sold to a top of 174.5p/kg for a Limousin Cow from D & DW Prickett, Farleton House or top price per head of £1354.50 for a Blonde Cow from JA & G Gardner, Moss House Farm. Black and White cows sold to 161.5p/kg from SH & LE Birkett, Stubb Hall Farm or a top of £1014.56 from L Parsons & Sons, Low Levens.

Black and White Heifers sold to 164.5p/kg from EE Thornton & Son, Downlands Farm or £1022.79 from K & DE Woodhouse Kitchen Ground.

There was the largest entry of Stirks to date this year at Lancaster with over 100 forward with trade for good, quality and growy types of Stirks in very strong demand and short of supply with a busy ring of buyers forward. Stirks old for their size were slightly harder to place, as usually seen. Stirks topped at £720 for an Angus Bull from J Maxwell, Whinney Garth with Heifers selling to £685 for a Charolais from DC Miller, Cobble Hey Farm. There is already of plenty of demand for the next sale, with buyers looking for grazing stirks. Bullock Stirks sold to £795 from M & E Forshaw & Son, Little Town Farm followed by DM Eames, Middle Lee Farm selling some September born suckler bred Charolais for £790.

Once again, Calves in strong demand and easily sold but a shortage of numbers with many holding onto them for next week’s Spring Show of Calves.

Monday 3rd April There was the largest entry of Prime Hoggs for some time at Lancaster today with 600 forward. As seen nationally, the edge slightly off the prime hogg trade with more on the market. A market average of 166p/kg was achieved with 39kg-45kg hoggs averaging 168p/kg. Hoggs sold to a top of 192p/kg from Kevin Purtill of Wigan. The trade topped at £94 for Dutch Texels from Andrew Foy of Conder Green. Mules sold to a top of £80 from Cardwell Farms of Stalmine with Swaledales selling to £74 from Andrew Butler of Hambleton.

An entry of 80 Cast Ewes this week sold to the continued strong trade with all eagerly bid for. Trade topped at £115 and £109 from Andrew Foy of Conder Green with Dutch Texel ewes. Suffolk cross ewes sold to a top of £100 from Andrew Wilson of Scotforth with plenty of pens of strong Suffolk and Continental ewes selling in the late eighties and nineties. Mule ewes sold to £83 from K & DE Woodhouse of Ellel with all Mule ewes forward selling to a market average of £75.64. Horned ewes sold to £66 from Andrew Butler.

Lancaster Sale Reports The largest entry of Sheep with Lambs by far to date with 288 forward for the sale with plenty of people in the market looking for sheep with lambs. The majority of vendors were leaving well satisfied with their trade with Texel ewes and Texel twins from PD Anderton of Wyre Farm selling to £180. Aged Mule ewes sold to £178 with Texel twins and broken mouthed Mule ewes with Texel twins selling to £175 from Karen Swarbrick of Out Rawcliffe. Texel ewes with young twins to £122 from W Pinder of Newton in Bowland and Mule ewes with single Texel lambs to £118 from Karen Swarbrick.

J36 Sale Reports Thursday 30th March There was an entry of just short of 50 Calves and Stirks today with a variety of all types of calves forward. A younger entry of beef calves present this week saw Limousin bull calves sell to a top of £420 from S Miles of Pennington with others from the same home selling to £390.

British blue heifers sold to £305 from DW Cottam of New Hutton.

A young entry of black and whites where keenly bid for with many black and white buyers leaving short of requirement. A run of yearling Hereford heifers from S & SM Halpin of Barrow in Furness sold to £605 and £575.

The edge was just slightly off for the Cast Cow trade but a strong trade was still seen. Feeding cows continue to be good to sell well and are eagerly bid for. British Blue cows sold to a top of 144.5p/kg from WH Kitching and Son of Hawes Farm or £977 for Limousin cows from DJ & EA Park of Crook.

Black and white cows sold to a top of 119.5p/kg or £912 from Barkers Farm of Carnforth with all black and whites forward selling to a market average of 105p/kg. An overall market average of 110p/kg was achieved.

A smaller entry of Store Cattle forward for sale this week following a big entry from the previous sale. A slightly steadier trade to start off with but once the trade got going it was as strong as it has been with all cattle forward eagerly bid for. The sale consisted of mainly yearling cattle with nothing forward born before the start of March 2016.

The trade topped at £980 for Continental bullocks from BL Swindlehurst of Ings with Angus bullocks selling to £860 from Steve Mason of Over Kellet. Limousin heifers sold to a top of £850 from J & J Postlethwaite from the Howgills.

The next Store Cattle sale will be on Thursday 13th April, which will include Breeding Cattle and entries for the catalogue will be closing on Wednesday 5th April.

J36 Tuesday 4th April The Sheep with Lamb season is getting going now with over 200 lives forward this week. There was a mixture of ages of ewes forward today with buyers in the market looking for both young and old sheep.

Three crop Mule ewes with twin Texel lambs sold to £185 from RW Nicholson of Lupton, Cheviot ewes with twin Texel lambs sold to £182 from E Parker of Cragg Bank. Aged Mule ewes with twin lambs at foot were, in general, selling between £162 and £170. One or two younger sheep coming into the market today saw Texel x shearlings with single Texel lambs at foot sell to £165 from JA Chapman of Kendal. Aged ewes with single lambs were regularly selling between £120 and £130.

A similar number of Prime Hoggs in the market today as seen the previous week sold to a better trade then had been expected. Those better quality export hoggs and well finished commercial types of hoggs were eagerly bid for and more could have easily been sold and to the advantage of the vendor.

Hoggs sold to a top of £107.50 from Andrew Butler of Hambleton with Beltex x hoggs weighing 43kg. Martin Fishwick and family of Fishwick Farms of Silverdale sold 39kg Beltex x hoggs to 269p/kg or £105. Export types hogs were regularly and easily selling over the 200p/kg mark and Mule hoggs sold to a top of £80 from JG Harryman of Hawkshead.

An overall market average of 170p/kg was achieved with 39kg to 45kg hoggs selling to a market average of 178p/kg.

There was a larger entry of Cast Sheep forward this week with 465 going under the gavel. A larger selection better quality pure bred and big continental ewes in the market eagerly bid for.

Trade topped at £124 from John Stott of Crosscrake with a pen of 3 Charollais ewes, closely followed by a couple of Beltex ewes from AR & C Fawcett of Gosforth selling to £123. Plenty of pens of ewes sold in excess of the £100 mark.

Mule ewes sold to a top of £80 from B & JM Crowe of Witherslack with plenty of pens of bigger mule ewes selling mid to late seventies. Horned ewes sold to a top of £73 for Rough Fells from JH Atkinson and Partners of Mosergh with Herdwick shearlings selling to a top of £68 for a pen of 25 from AR & C Fawcett of Gosforth.
