North West Auctions Weekly Report and Newsletter – 4th January
NWA Lancaster Young Handlers Show & Sale Monday 2nd January The first Prime Hogg sale of the New Year included the annual young handlers show and sale of prime Hoggs. Thanks goes to our judge Martin McIntyre of Hawes for his time and expertise in judging the young handlers show. It was fantastic to have over a dozen entrants with over 20 Hoggs out for show. The championship rosette was awarded to John Ridding of Selside with a Texel Hogg weighing 42kg selling to £102 or 227p/kg, which was purchased by Lancashire Halal Meats. The reserve champion was awarded to Matthew Jackson of Ingleton with a Texel Hogg selling to £84 also purchased by Lancashire Halal Meats. The young handler’s trade topped at £103 from Cath Foy of Conder Green with a Beltex lamb. Thanks goes to all our buyers for their continue support of this great event and it was fantastic to have the young handlers present at the auction this morning. An entry of over 600 prime Hoggs forward sold to a lesser trade than seen at last week’s sale with buyers expecting large entries of Hoggs nationwide following the Christmas break last week. The trade topped at £84 from LE & A Ridding of Selside with Texel lambs. A market average of 158p/kg was achieved for all lambs forward. The Cast Sheep trade remains firm at Lancaster with Texel ewes from MY & K Ayrton of Bambers Farm selling to a top of £103 with first cross Texel Ewes out of the mule selling to £80 from the same home. Stronger mule ewes regularly selling on the mid-sixties.
