J36 Grass Day Show & Sale Thursday 27th April Store Cattle The annual Grass Day show and sale of Store Cattle at J36 on Thursday 27th April had a catalogued entry of 571 cattle.

The Pre-sale show had over 40 cattle put forward before the Judge, Mr James Crichton who used his expertise to judge the six classes and having the difficult task to place the Championship Rosette. Mr Crichton awarded the Champion Rosette and the Roger Griffiths Memorial Rose Bowl to JG & PH Thompson of Selside for a very showy 10 month old Limousin Heifer selling for £1180. The Reserve Champion went to N Cooper & Son of Torver for a 10 month old Limousin Bullock selling to £1210.

There was some fantastic runs of cattle throughout the sale with buyers returning year after year knowing they will be able to purchase tremendous cattle ideal for turnout for summer grazing. Yearling Cattle were dearest on the day with best bullocks making the £1200 mark.

Today’s sale was topped by S Procter, High Biggarsbank, Selside with a Limousin Bullock making £1270 purchased by today’s judge.

Bullocks averaged £985 with 90% of the cattle being under 12 months of age. The heifer trade topped at £1240 from TW Nelson & Son of Stainton for a British Blue.

Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 28th April The weekly sale of Store Cattle at Lancaster had an entry of 350 forward. Trade remains strong for all types of cattle from long keep grazing cattle to short keep cattle.

Topping today’s trade was WS Burrow and Son of Silverdale selling British Blue Bullocks to £1390 and Limousin Bullocks from the same home to £1350. As always, there was plenty of demand for Native Cattle with Hereford Bullocks selling to £1330 from L Parsons and Sons of Levens and Angus Heifers topping at £1310 from R & E Ladds of Kendal. Fifteen percent of the cattle forward sold in excess of £1200.

Yearling Cattle still a strong trade at Lancaster with Blonde Heifers from MJ Whitworth of Bolton-le-Sands selling to £1160 and Bullocks to £1040 from B & SE Carter of Ellel. A large proportion of Friesian Bullocks in the market today saw trade topping at £1130 from L Parsons & Sons of Levens.

Vendors who batched cattle into groups saw financial benefits and we urge customers to group cattle where possible.

There was a larger entry of 125 Cast Cows in the market today. Trade remains very strong with an overall market average of 127p/kg.

OTM Cows sold to a top of 229.5p/kg or £1399 for a Limousin from Mason & Gardner of Ingleton. Best Friesian cows were selling around the 150p/kg topping at 159.5p/kg from ME & B Mason and Son of Tatham or £1055 from JM Capstick of Ashton with Stodday. Friesians sold to an overall market average of 123p/kg.

The Monthly Sale of Stirks and the Weekly Sale of Calves had 120 forward. A buoyant stirk trade was enjoyed with, in general, a younger entry of Stirks in the market today.

The trade topped at £680 for British Blue Heifers from RJ Smalley of Out Rawcliffe. Hereford Bullocks sold to a top of £680 from JM Lund of Ingleton. A good trade for Angus Cattle was enjoyed once again at Lancaster with Angus Bullocks selling to £655 from Mrs M Swarbrick and Sons of Out Rawcliffe and Angus Heifers selling to £635 from JW Gorst of Quernmore. A consignment of 4 and 5 month old Stirks from DJ Townley of Ashton created plenty of interest and a strong trade. Limousin Bullocks sold to £570 with Heifers selling to £505. A smaller entry of Black and Whites in the market today saw 6 and 7 month old Bulls sell to £415 from BR Butterfield or Burton In Kendal. Weaned Friesian Calves sold to £300 from WR Clarke and Partners of Cinderbarrow.

The weekly sale of Calves saw the recent strong calf trade continue. An entry of young calves in the market today saw month old British Blue Calves sell to £330 from ME Wannop & Sons of Heaton. A consignment of fortnight old calves from JR Newsham and Son of Conder Green saw British Blue Heifers sell to £305 and British Blue Bulls to £285. Angus Bull Calves sold to £290 from Wallbank Farms of Abbeystead.

Monday 24th April The largest entry to date this year of Spring Lambs at Lancaster which was, once again, greeted by seven active buyers looking to purchase, with another spring lamb buyer anticipated next week. A buoyant trade for the quality of lambs in the market today with best quality lambs short in supply and more could be sold to the advantage of the vendor. Trade topped at £109 from Sandra Blades of Arkholme with a Texel lamb selling to Mercer Traditional Meats of Bamber Bridge.

A few less Prime Hoggs on offer today with a mixed entry in terms of quality. Handy weight, mid-forty kilogram hoggs were easiest to sell and in the strongest demand. Trade topped at £97.50 from Ian T Richardson of Woodplumpton who also sold hoggs to £92.50. A consignment of hoggs from Richard Cardwell of Stalmine sold to £92.50 or 206p/kg.

A smaller entry of Cast Sheep forward in the market today sold to a continued strong trade with all eagerly bid for. Topping the trade was a consignment of Texel rams from MJ & K Ayrton of Cockerham topping at £137 and £109. Texel ewes sold to £80 from S Wilson and Son of Lancaster with mule ewes selling to £79 from AF & M Bolland of Ellel.

Sheep with Lambs at foot saw a mixed trade with buyers of splitting families looking for strong ewes with strong lambs at foot. A consignment from James Burr of Quernmore saw Texel ewes with twin lambs sell to £185. Broken mouthed Mule ewes sold to £165 from the same home. Broken mouthed Mule ewes and single lambs sold to £125.

Beef calves today topped at £415 for a stylish British Blue bull calf from Whitestone Farm with heifers from the same home topping at the £400, a strong show of Black and White Calves today at J36 saw the trade top at £140 for a Black and White Bull Calf from Strickland Hill.

A nice show of stirks this morning with 20 going through the ring topping £800 for a Hereford bullock for E & SM Halpin with heifers to the £600 mark from PW Clarke. North West auctions held their fortnightly sale of Cast Cows at J36 with a show made up of predominately black and whites cows were put to an increased ringside of buyers.

Beef bred cows were a sharp trade topping at 168p/kg for a British Blue cow from I & AJ Armer, Burneside. Black and white cows were a strong trade topping at 144p/kg from HW Robinson & Son, Gatebeck with all black and whites averaging 111p/kg.

Tuesday 2nd May A change of Sale Date for the Monthly Sale of Pigs meant a smaller show forward, with 40 Pigs forward.

Top price of the day was achieved by PK & R Woof of Stainton for Prime Hogs scaling 122kgs and selling for £168 per head. JR Corlett of Setmurthy sold Prime Gilts at 80kgs to 150p/kg.

Weaners sold to £58 for Gilts from C Gawthrop of Bootle and Stores to £80 from MG Hall of Wigton.

The weekly sale of Sheep with Lambs at foot had an entry of 150 families in the market selling to a stronger trade than seen over recent weeks with fresh faces present looking to purchase sheep with lambs at foot. As usual, a quality consignment of sheep with lambs at foot forward from G & KM Atkinson of Colby sold Mule gimmer shearlings to £222 with Texel twins at foot and to £215 twice. There was just short of 100 Spring Lambs this week, there was a show of improved quality forward on last week reflecting in an overall SQQ Average of 215.1p/kg. Top price of the day was achieved by AE Atkinson & Son of Endmoor for their consignment of Beltex Lambs, selling to £110 or 268.3p/kg. Texel Lambs sold to a top of £104 for a pen of 49kg lambs from W Garnett & Son of Ackenthwaite, with lambs from MJ Waller of Lupton selling to 241.5p/kg. Suffolk Lambs from JN & DJ Bowes sold to £100 or 226.2p/kg for handy weight lambs from JW & D Robinson & Son of Nook. Lightweight Lambs are selling well, with Charollais from FE & CM Robinson & Son selling to 243.2p/kg.
