Sheep with Lambs at Foot sell to £300 ! ! Spring is certainly in the air today with the sun beaming down and Sheep with Lambs at foot booming as the sheep industry is full of confidence. The opening sale of the season saw a busy ring of buyers looking to invest. It was the consignment from J & A Heap & Son, Barnacre that took top spot selling aged Continental ewes with smart Texel twins lambs to £300 with Continental ewes and singles from the same home selling to £230. The consignment of aged Mule ewes with Texel twin lambs sold to £265 three times with others to £260 and £255 from David and Karen Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. More are needed again for next week’s sale.

Lancaster had a larger entry of 576 Hoggs forward this week selling to an impressive market average of 270p/kg with handy weighted hoggs averaging 282p/kg. This week’s offering of hoggs had more Continentals forward. The best type of hoggs easily sold beyond the 300p/kg mark selling to a top of 351p/kg for a pair of 37kg Beltex hoggs from Andrew Butler, Hambleton that grossed at £130 with others from this consignment selling to 339p/kg, 337p/kg and 333p/kg. Taking top spot this week at £151 was shapely Texel hoggs from JE Parkinson & Son, Quernmore weighing 44kg and making 343p/kg with others from this home selling to £144. The consignment of Dutch Texel’s from GR & A Foy, Conder Green sold to 333p/kg or a top of £130. More butcher quality hoggs are required at Lancaster with nine active buyers present this week. Texel hoggs from JA Lambert, Out Rawcliffe sold to £140 weighing 45kg. The consignment of heavy Texel hoggs from George Sanderson and Family, Catforth sold to £139.50 and £139. The consignment from T & L Kirkham, Eccleston sold to £136, £135 and £133. Suffolk’s topped at £132 from George Sanderson and Family, Catforth with Cardwell Farms also achieving the same. Hill hoggs sold to £127 from A & L Huddleston, Wray with others to £125 from T Ayrton & Son, Over Wyresdale. Cheviot hoggs sold to £123.50 weighing 45kg from Cardwell Farms with Mules peaking at £123 from T Ayrton & Son, Over Wyresdale. Horned hoggs peaked at £104 from RH & C Ayrton, Abbeystead.

Sale Reports Lancaster Prime Hoggs and Cast Sheep CONT . . . Monday 1st March 2021 Lancaster has enjoyed a good cast sheep trade averaging just shy of the £100 mark. Texel ewes sold to a top of £140 from RA Holmes, Inskip with others to £128 from S Bosworth, Burnley, with plenty of Continental ewes selling in excess of £115. Suffolk cross ewes sold to £112 from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth. Mule ewes sold to a top of £107, £106 and £105 from James Burr, Quernmore with plenty of strong Mule ewes selling at one hundred pound plus and averaged £96.52. Horned sheep sold to a top of £77 from T Ayrton & Son, Over Wyresdale. Texel cast tups sold to £127 and £116 from T & L Kirkham, Eccleston.

Lancaster Calves, Stirks, OTM & Store Cattle Friday 26th February 2021 The weekly sale of Calves enjoyed a strong trade throughout, a couple of fresh faces ringside kept the trade buoyant. The consignment from J & G Thornley, Roseacre sold British Blue bulls to £470, £450, £430 and Angus bull calves from the same home selling to £425. British Blue heifer calves sold to £425 from GJ Dugdale, Barton with others selling to £405 from the Walmsley family, Cockerham. Other Angus bull calves sold to £395 from David and Eileen Wallbank, Abbeystead. Plenty of strong beef calves selling in the mid to late three hundreds. Stronger native heifer calves a sharper trade selling to a top of £275 for Angus’ from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale with others to £255 from Lawsons Farm, Cockerham. Black and white calves a sharper trade, the consignment from David and Eileen Wallbank, Abbeystead selling to £205, £195 and £188. Good rearing calves regularly selling one hundred pound plus. The monthly sale of Stirks enjoyed a buoyant trade for all types on offer. The entry of 140 attracted once again fresh buyers ringside, more cattle are required each month. Top spot this month was £910 for 9 month old Angus bullocks from CM & CA Jackson, Caton with others from MB Flatman & Son, Over Wyresdale selling to £890. Hereford bullocks at 10month old sold to £880 from J Cooper, Penwortham. Limousin bullock’s suckler bred at 9month old sold to £880 from MJ Whitworth, Bolton le Sands. The consignment of Angus yearlings from G Metcalfe & Son, Gressingham sold bullocks to £880 and £860 with a pen of five heifers to £835. Plenty of good yearling bullocks selling in excess of the eight hundred mark. Suckler bred Limousin heifers at 9-10month old from Alan Thompson, Carnforth sold to £840. The bull trade saw 11 month old British Blues sell to a top of £820 from AE & PC Capstick, Heversham. Yearling black and white bullocks sold to £660 from GI & M Faraday, Bleasdale.

Friday 26th February 2021 The trade for Store Cattle continues to be strong at Lancaster with a larger entry forward today in which more each week can easily be handled to the advantage of vendors. All cattle forward averaged £1082. The short term strong cattle in big demand and eagerly bid for. Trade twice peaked at £1490 firstly for a Limousin from JA & LR Wilson, Millom who sold another to £1380. Then again at £1490 for a Charolais from JM & AG Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe who also sold Limousin’s to £1320. Angus bullocks sold to a top of £1400 from EJ Ward and Sons, Nether Kellet. Other noted prices for Angus bullocks were £1290 from J Tattersall, Leyland followed by £1280 from TC Whiteside & Son, Pilling and J Hesketh, Hutton. The heifer trade peaked twice at £1240 for Charolais heifers from EJ Ward and Sons, Nether Kellet and British Blues from WA Hodgson, Whinfell. The Cast Cow trade continues to get better and better. This week’s average was an impressive 139p/kg for 85 forward. More are required to fulfil the busy ring of buyers at Lancaster. We recommend to vendors in the current strong trade, not to carry any passengers, ‘cash them in’ whilst the trade is here. Limousin OTM steers sold to 209.5p/kg from WA Hodgson, Whinfell. OTM heifers sold 204.5p/kg or £1325 from H Morgan, Stalmine with Simmentals from the same home selling to £1328. OTM dairy heifers sold to 184.5p/kg from PA & D Slater, Barnacre or £1237 from H Wright & Son, Helsington. Limousin cows sold to a top of 177.5p/kg from A & P Hodgkinson, Stalmine grossing an impressive £1508. Best fleshed dairy cows regularly selling in the region of 150p/kg. They sold to a top of £1268 from J & M Robinson, Over Kellet; £1262 from AW & AM Park, Ellel; £1212 from TL Baldwin & Son, Forton and £1184 from WN & D Smith, Cockerham. J36 Breeding Sheep and Store Hoggs Thursday 25th February 2021 North West Auctions, J36 held an end of February sale of 350 In Lamb breeding sheep and gimmer hoggs followed by empty hoggs. Taking the top spot was the consignment from E Proctor, Barrow in Furness. These much-admired young Texel sheep sold to £255 and £250 with Suffolk cross ewes from the same home selling to £205. Mule gimmer shearlings scanned in lamb at approximately 200% from DC Miller, Claughton on Brock sold to £182, £175 and £165. Two and three crop Mules scanned at 200% from J & J Huck, Burneside sold to £180 twice and £178. Aged Continental ewes sold to £165 from JA Airey, New Hutton. The consignment of Llyen shearlings scanned in lamb to the Llyen sold shearlings to £165 and £162 with young ewes to £162. The consignment of in-lamb Mule hoggs from P Whitton & Son, Burneside twice sold to £158 with others to £148, £142 twice and £140. Thursday 25th February 2021 The fortnightly sale of Store Hoggs saw another strong trade with plenty of interest as numbers begin to dry up fast. More are required to fulfil buyer requirements. The trade, the dearest seen so far to date, especially when a large quantity of the hoggs forward today being hill bred. More are required each week to maintain the requirements of a busy ring of nine active buyers fulfilled. The entry of 755 forward averaged 274p/kg with handy weighted hoggs averaging 281p/kg. The consignment from CB Heald & Son, Ingleton sold heavy weight Texel hoggs to £143 with others from the same home selling to £140 and £138. Beltex hoggs sold to £143 from AR & BJ Thompson, Selside who also had others to £139 and £138. Other noted Texel prices saw them sell to £140 from JS & KM Wilson & Son, Heslington weighing 43kgs. Plenty of handy weighted Continental hoggs sold in the region of 300p/kg topping at 351p/kg for Beltex hoggs from PD & P Mason, Burton in Kendal, with others selling to 337p/kg from John Twigge, Lindale. There was a large number of hill bred hoggs forward this week. Horned hoggs were topped by Rough Fells from AJ & CM Harrison, Kentmere selling heavy weights to £134 followed by others to £129 from Amy Harrison, Kentmere. Swaledale hoggs peaked at £119 from RS & BA Harker, Holme. Mule hoggs sold to a top of £125 from AR & BJ Thompson, Selside, with others selling to £121 from JS & KM Wilson & Son, Heslington.

A smaller show of Cast Sheep were forward with 280 going under the hammer and all types continuing to sell to an improved trade at J36. Texel ewes once again led the way selling to £140 for a pen of 4 from R Wilson, Appleby with others to £118 from PK & R Woof, Stainton and all Texel ewes forward averaging £106. Suffolk ewes were a sharper trade topping at £134 from R Wilson, Appleby with J & R Waller selling their ewes to £123. All Continental ewes at J36 were well bid for. Mule ewes were once again the trade of the day with buyers keen to purchase them. D & C Middleton, Burrow sold a pen of 9 Mule ewes to £122 with others selling to £114 from T Parkin, Sedbergh with many Mules selling at £105 plus with the next level down selling at £95 – £100. All hill ewes sold to a strong trade with buyers looking for fleshy ewes. It was nice to have Swaledale ewes back over the £80 mark with a top of £83 from JJ & J Towers, Lowick and a penful selling to £80 from JF & AW Sutton, Longsleddale. Herdwick ewes sold to £79 from R Cowin & Son, Mansergh. A good show of 20 tups were forward with strong Texel tups selling to £159 from WM & JE Shuttleworth, Barbon and 2 Texel tups from JR Waller, Killington. Hill bred tups sold to £97 for a Cheviot from P Dixon, Longsleddale. A run of goats from Mr & Mrs Edmondson, Langdale sold to a strong trade topping twice at £83.
