NWA J36 Opening Breeding Sheep Sale Thursday 28th August The first early lambing production breeding sheep sale at J36 Rural Auction Centre had an entry of 200 forward.

There was a busy ringside of buyers, with many watching the trade in preparation for the sheep sale season. Mule Gimmer Shearlings twice sold to £130 twice from EI, EA & TW Wilson of Guides Farm. Highlander x New Zealand Suffolk Shearlings sold to £115 from BD Willison & Son of Cinderbarrow Farm. Three and four crop Rough Fell Mule ewes sold to £80 from W Pinder of Longstripes.

Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 29th July The weekly Store Cattle sale at Lancaster continues to be the place to market cattle with the only down side to today’s sale was short of numbers forward. There was 251 forward selling to a top of £1370 for a couple of Limousin steers from JA & LR Wilson of Dunningwell, Millom. Native cattle sold to a top of £1,340 from J & H Davis of Weavers Farm for a pair of Angus steers. All continental steers forward today averaged in the region of £1,100. Short keep black and white bullocks sold to a top of L Parsons of Low Levens. Well fleshed black and white bullocks of all sizes and ages good too sell at the moment. All heifers forward today forward averaged £1,000. Keep the cattle coming forward to fulfil buyers requirements, a shortage of large short keep cattle today.

An entry of 95 Cast Cows and over thirty month old cattle forward today sold to another solid trade at Lancaster. Black and whites topped at 149.5ppk from Gibson and Berry of Low Audlands with best types selling in the region of 140ppk and a market average of 101ppk for all dairy bred cows forward. A few cast steers forward today sold around the 170ppk mark topping at 179.5ppk from P & EM Mason of Spital Farm. An overall average of 110ppk for all over thirty month cattle forward.

What a fantastic entry of 158 Calves and Stirks forward at Lancaster for the monthly sale of Stirks. In the region of sixty calves where keenly bid for from start to finish. Black and whites a very strong trade with vendors leaving well chuffed with their trade. Black and White topped at £155 from Wallbank Farm with plenty of young black and white rearing calves between 3 and 5 weeks selling anywhere between £60 and £100 depending on quality. British Blue bulls calves sold to £500 from F & E Harrison of Birks Farm.

The monthly Stirk sale saw beef bred stirks eagerly sought after with buyers looking for all shapes and sizes of beef bred stirks. Black and white stirks harder to sell this month being reflected in the store and prime cattle trade for black and whites. The day’s trade topped at £755 for a pair of eight month old British Blue steers from FW Rhodes and Son of Barrow Greaves with another couple of British blue steers similar age selling to £750 from Tony Coates of Caldervale. Well grown good types of continental bulls and steer stirks regularly sold mid to late six hundreds and into the sevens. Heifers topped at £590 from 7 month old British Blues from JS Taylor of Lancaster.

Monday 1st August A smaller entry of Prime Lambs then expected at Lancaster, more could have easily been sold today with vendors leaving well pleased with the trade averaging 183ppk with lambs between 39-45kg easiest to sell averaging 184ppk. Beltex types of lambs sold over 200ppk topping at 202ppk from TR Prickett of Hutton Roof and P Onion of Keer Falls. Top price of the day came from TR Prickett of Hutton Roof selling for £87.50. Only a handful of mules forward today selling to a very pleasing trade of £74.50 from BD Gill of Yarlsber. A larger number of light weight lambs in the market between 32kg and 36kg, best types sold just shy of 200 pence per kilo.

There was an entry of three Prime Bulls from Peter and Ann Bell of Village Farm. All bulls bred from the dairy herd saw Angus bulls sell to 179.5ppk with Montbeliarde bulls sell to 177.5ppk. A bigger entry of Cast Ewes sold to a better trade then the previous week with all buyers very keen to purchase sheep. Texel ewes topped at £102 and £100 from John and Sue Drinkwater of Quernmore with plenty of other continental ewes selling around the ninety pound mark.

Mule ewes sold to £74 from S Wilson and Son of Burrow Height with plenty of mules around the seventy pound mark. Horned ewes sold to £63 from P Onions of Keer Falls. Buyers continue to be cautious of fat ewes with lean and fit ewes good too sell.

J36 Sale Reports Thursday 28th July The weekly sale of Calves and Stirks had an entry of 39 forward. All the calves but one where Black and Whites. A good British Blue bull calf sold to £355 from HJ Robinson of Elm Tree Farm. A very young entry of Black and Whites once again at J36 where very well sold with vendors chuffed with their trade and plenty of buyers around the ring looking for black and whites. Strong month old rearing types of black and white bulls selling in excess of £70. Just a handful of Ayrshire Stirks in sold to £230. Vendors are asked to inform Ian of entries on 07766521472 so buyers can be informed. Beef calves of all ages and sizes wanted and selling to a premium in the livestock auction.

There was 929 Store Lambs forward this morning. Considering the Prime Lamb trade dropping this week, store lambs continued to be a great trade. A very ringside of buyers looking to purchase short and long keep lambs. The overall market average was £58.77 up £6.44 on last fortnight’s sale and a fantastic average for the type of lambs forward. The day’s top price was a pen of 5 Charollais lambs from EI,EA & TW Wilson, Guides Farm. Better Continental and Suffolk lambs sold between £63 and £66 regularly. A few runs of Mules forward today regularly sold in the mid-fifties topping at £66 with mules being better than other local markets.

Tuesday 2nd August A smaller entry of Prime Lambs then required this week with 1316 forward, this week averaging 187ppk an increase of 12ppk on the week.

Lambs weighing 39kg to 45kg sold to a market average of 189ppk. Export type lambs sold in excess of 200ppk topping at 208ppk from J Woodburn and Partners of Ulverston. Heavy weight lambs sold to a top of £95 from CR Howard of Oxen Park, Ulverston for Charollais lambs.

In general a good quality entry of lambs forward this week were good to sell and eagerly bid for by an active ring off buyers. Mule lambs sold to a top of £84 from DN Smith of Fell House, more Mules could of been sold today to vendors advantage. Lightweight lambs saw Beltex lambs weighing 36kgs from David Prickett of Farleton House selling to £74 or 205ppk.

568 Cast Ewes & Rams in at J36 today averaged £54.57.

Cast Ewes continued to be a good trader at J36, nice meaty cleaner ewes easily sold. Fattier Ewes were cautiously bought.

Top price was £94, twice, for Suffolks from AJ Robinson, Oak House and for Texels from WS Burrow & Sons, Gibraltar. Horned Ewes sold to £71 for a great pen of Rough Fell Ewes from Colin Bateman, Croftfoot. Swales topped at £70 from Drinkall Bros and all swales forward averaged the late £40s. Mule Ewes sold to £80 from J Woodburn & Partners, Mansrigg Farm, with plenty of strong pens in the mid £70s.
