Lancaster Stirk Sale - Friday 29th March The monthly sale of Stirks had an entry of 169 forward, there was a strong trade for good quality bred stirks of all ages with harder done to and plainer types a more selective trade. Well-grown bullocks regularly selling in excess of the £700 mark. Topping the trade today was E Lund & Son, Ingleton selling Hereford bullocks to £750 this was closely followed by Angus’ from J Maxwell, Halton selling to £740. Limousin steers sold to £720 and £700 from KA Purtill, Wigan. Plenty more bullocks easily sold in to the mid six hundreds. Leading the way in the heifer section was J Maxwell, selling Angus’ to £600 with Herefords selling to £560. Topping the bull section was J & CW Metcalfe & Son, Quernmore selling 5 and half month old British Blues to £515 with Herefords selling to £510. Black and white bullocks topped at £420 from I Atkinson & Son, Warton. This was closely followed by 6 months old Friesian selling to £400 from J & C Metcalfe, Quernmore. Once again, Calves in Lancaster were met with plenty of demand with British Blue bull calves selling to £365 from AW & AM Park & Sons, Ellel who also sold Blue bulls to £345. Simmental bull calves sold to £355 from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green. Also selling in excess of the £300 mark was British Blue bulls from Cote Farm Partnership, Nether Kellet achieving £340. All British Blue bulls sold to a market average of £315.83. Limousin bull calves sold to £315 from DJ Townley, Stodday. The heifers were topped at £300 for Simmentals from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green. Plenty of beef calves sold in the mid to late two hundreds. Black and white bull calves sold around the £100 mark with all black and white bull calves averaging £78.

There was a slightly smaller entry of Store Cattle this week which sold to a sharper trade. JM & GA Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe who sold Charolais to £1300 and Angus’ to £1260. A consignment of bullocks from SH & LE Birkett, Nether Kellet saw British Blues sell to £1160 and Limousins to £1140. Once again, plenty of bullocks selling in excess of the £1100 mark. Heifers twice sold to a top of £1100 firstly for Limousin from R & J Dodgson, Natland and then for Charolais from JT & U Garth, Ellel. Angus heifers sold to £1080 from AJ & D Knowles, New Hutton. Dairy bullocks sold to a top of £1020 from Brown Swiss’ from J Lamb, Old Glasson with black and whites selling to £980 from JM & GA Swarbrick.

The weekly sale of Cast Cows and OTMs at Lancaster saw an entry of 84 forward selling to a sharper trade with all forward averaging 126p/kg. Cast Steers topped at 189.5p/kg for British Blues from JT & U Garth, Ellel with British Blue heifers selling to 187.5p/kg and 181.5p/kg from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale with Angus’ selling to 179.5p/kg from JS & S Atkinson, Scorton. Cast black and white steers topped at 174.5p/kg from JT & U Garth. Cows topped at 171.5p/kg for British Blues from MJ Whitworth, Bolton-le-Sands. Plenty of beef cows sold in the 140p/kg range. Black and white cows topped at 157.5p/kg from J & M Robinson, Over Kellet. Plenty of dairy cows easily sold in the one hundred and twenties pence per kilo. Top price per head in the cast ring was British Blue heifers selling to £1162 closely followed by JS & S Atkinson selling Angus’ to £1129. Cows topped at £1080 for British Blues from MJ Whitworth with black and whites topping at £1077 from T Taylor, Wood Plumpton. Vendors are urged to take advantage of strong trade for cast cows in the ring at the moment especially at Lancaster offering busy ring of buyers.

Lancaster Sale Reports Monday 1st April Over 700 Sheep Forward at Lancaster Today The weekly sale of Prime Hoggs had a slightly smaller entry of 435 forward selling to an increased and sharper trade for all types of hoggs. There was an overall market average of 185p/kg which included nearly half the hoggs forward weighing over 47kg. There was an SQQ 195p/kg which included a large quantity of hill bred hoggs. Once again, plenty of pens of Continental bred hoggs easily selling in excess of 200p/kg. Leading the way this week at 223p/kg was Texel Hoggs from J Fryars, Greenhalgh, Texel hoggs from AG Butler sold to 220p/kg and 217p/kg with Texels from G & D Ball & Son, Great Eccleston selling to 219p/kg and Cheviots topping at 218p/kg from T Smith, Pilling. The trade was topped by AG Butler who sold Charollais hoggs to £106 with Texels from the same home selling to £104, £100, £99 twice and £98. Also achieving £98 was Charollais from RS & IM Kellet, Cockerham. Beltexs topped at £96 twice from Bargh Contractors, Heaton-with-Oxcliffe with Texels twice selling to £96 from BD Wood, Out Rawcliffe with numerous more pens of Continental and Texel hoggs selling in the early nineties. All Continental and Texel hoggs forward today averaged £88.54. Suffolks topped at £92 from RS & IM Kellet, with Cheviots twice selling to £90 from J & H Davis, Cabus. Mule hoggs topped at £90 from RG & H Preece, Roeburndale West with other Mules selling to £87.50 from Cardwell Farms, Stalmine. All Mules forward £80.82. Horned hoggs sold to a top of £88.50 for Swaledales from T Longton & Son, Quernmore. Scottish Blackfaces topped at £83.50 from WM Pye, Ashton with Stodday. All horned hoggs averaged £80.67. Once again, an entry of 50 Cast Ewes at Lancaster sold to another strong trade. Topping the market today at £107 was Texel Cast Tup from PD Anderton, Scorton. Texel ewes topped at £98 from E Lund & Son, Ingleton with Continentals selling to £91 from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth. Mule ewes sold to a top of £85 from PD Anderton with other Mule ewes to £83 from S Wilson & Son. Horned sheep topped at £61 for Swaledales from A & L Huddleston, Wray with others selling to £60 from J & CW Metcalfe & Son, Quernmore. All Swaledale sheep forward this week averaged £58. There was an overall market average of £74.19 with no Cast Sheep forward this week selling below the £50 mark. There were 73 families or 205 lives for the weekly sale of Sheep with Lambs at Foot which is the largest entry this season. There was a more selective trade this week that saw sheep sucking their lambs well in strongest demand and easiest to sell. Leading the way this week was young Continentals Ewes sucking twins selling to a top of £188 from G Hargreaves, Scotforth. This was closely followed by Texel ewes selling to £185 from Messrs Young, Grange-over-Sands. Aged Continental ewes with twin lambs topped at £182 from D & K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. £180 was achieved a further three times for Continental ewes with twin lambs at foot. Broken mouthed Mule ewes sucking strong twins topped at £172 from D & K Swarbrick. Sheep sucking singles twice sold to £128 for Continentals from SI Porter, Allithwaite. J36 Sale Reports Tuesday 2nd April There was an increased entry of 87 Sheep with Lambs at foot for the weekly sale, which saw a busy ringside of buyers and an increased trade for the best types with others harder to place this week. The market today was topped by J & M Wilson, Selside selling Texel ewes with Twin lambs to £235 and £230, with Texel ewes sucking singles selling to £145. Aged Mule ewes sucking twins sold to a top of £175, twice from the same good home. Broken mouthed Mule ewes with twins topped at £168 from D & K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe.

There was a larger entry of Prime Hoggs which were met with a much stronger trade this week at J36 in which more well-fed hoggs could have been easily sold with buyers leaving short of their requirements. There was an overall market average of 193p/kg with 39-45kg hoggs averaging 201p/kg. Beltex lambs topped the market this week selling to a top of £110 and £109 or 253p/kg and 242p/kg from GM & A Jackson, Little Eccleston. All Beltexs forward averaged 234p/kg. Texels sold to a top of £103 from GM & A Jackson, with others selling to £100 and £99.50 from D Metcalfe, Dalton-in-Furness Texels also sold to £99 from TW Nelson & Son, Stainton. There was plenty of good handy weight Texel Hoggs selling between 210-225p/kg. Mule hoggs topped at £96.50 for 50kg hoggs from Moorhouse Farms, Isle of Man with all Mule hoggs today averaging £86.90. Horned hoggs sold to a top of £87.50 from Moorhouse Farms with Herdwicks selling to £85 from Messrs Hodgson, Rydal with all Herdwick hoggs averaging 205p/kg.

There was a larger entry of 487 Cast Ewes this week selling to, once again, a sharp trade at J36. Topping twice at £111 was RI Dixon, Low Newton for Leicester and Suffolk ewes. Also selling in excess of the £100 mark was Suffolk ewes from T Redmayne, Ings to £104 with Texel Ewes to £103 from B & HM Wilson, Selside and others to £102 from Helen Newton, Low Levens. Plenty of sheep sold into the nineties. Mule ewes sold to a top of £94 from C Parsons, Old Hutton with others to £91 from the same home and also achieving the £90 for Mules was Moorhouse Farm. Plenty of pens of Mules into the eighties. Cheviot ewes topped at £84 from JR Handley, Whinfell with horned ewes selling to a top of £74 twice from R Lawrence, Grange-over-Sands and GJ Ibbotson, Roeburndale West. Plenty of horned ewes sold into the late sixties.
