Lancaster Store Cattle Friday 26th May Store Cattle Sell to £1520 at Lancaster!

The Store Cattle ring saw good quality cattle selling to a stronger trade and short in supply with all buyers very keen for cattle today. Plainer types slightly were harder to place.

Again, another headline top price at Lancaster with a British Blue Bullock selling to £1520 from J Bargh of Heaton with Oxcliffe. Native Cattle good to sell at Lancaster with Aberdeen Angus Bullocks selling to £1490 from JA & LR Wilson of Millom. A pen of 4 Aberdeen Angus Bullocks from O Butler of Kirkham sold to £1440. Heifers today topped at £1340 from JA & LR Wilson of Millom with a Simmental. Plenty of cattle easily selling to excess of £1200.

There was certainly more demand for well fleshed heavy Black and White Bullocks selling to a top of £1250 for a pen of 3 from S Kellet & Son of Pilling.

The Weekly sale of Cast Cows had a smaller entry of 46 forward due to the bank holiday weekend and many people busy with silage. The trade remains very strong with vendors urged to take advantage of this and sell live weight.

Young Limousin Cows topped the trade at 219p/kg or £1248 from JD & EM & JA Atkinson of Skelsmergh. An overall market average of 131p/kg was achieved. Black and Whites sold to a top of 164p/kg with the best types of cows around the 140p/kg.

Overall all Black and Whites averaging 123p/kg.

The monthly Stirk sale had a smaller entry this month selling to a continued strong trade in which more could have easily been sold as summer is here and the grass is growing well. Charolais suckler bred bullocks from DC Miller of Cobble Hey sold to £825 and £780 with heifers from the same home selling to £690. A consignment from Robert Mason of Out Rawcliffe saw British Blue and Angus steers sell £750 at 10 month old with Angus heifers from the same home selling to £625. Montbeliarde steers sold to £590 from JR Pye of Stalmine with Black and Whites topping at £470 from John Maxwell.

A shortage of beef bull Calves forward today. More could have easily been sold to the advantage of vendors. Just one beef bull saw a British blue bull sell to £350 from J & A Sheerin of Quernmore, with Simmental heifers selling to £260 from JR Newsham of Conder Green with Herefords from FW Rhodes & Son of Ellel. A very strong black and white trade with plenty selling easily in excess of £100 topping at £162 from Drinkall Bros of Catshaw.

Lancaster Sale Reports Monday 29th May There was an entry of 461 Spring Lambs forward at Lancaster this morning. An overall trade of 231p/kg was achieved. Topping today’s trade was JA & VM Lamb of Conder Green for a Suffolk and also from AG Butler of Poulton le Fylde for a Texel reaching £111. Top price per kilo was 260p for 10 Texels from WM Pye of Ashton with Stodday. Spring Lambs, weight 39-45kg, averaged 232p/kg and 32-39kg averaging 230p/kg.

With the season of Prime Hoggs coming to an end, the sale only saw a small entry of 43 forward. The trade was topped by a Texel from Joshua France of Preston reaching £103. A smaller entry of Cast Sheep due to bank holiday weekend. Today’s trade was topped at £85 for a Texel from EE Thornton & Sons of Heaton with Oxcliffe. Mule Ewes topped at £72 from H Birkett & Son of Overton with all mules overall averaging £65.

North West Suffolk Breeders Club Show at North West Auctions Lancaster There was a fabulous turnout of sheep on Saturday with Alan Blair (Thornfleet flock) doing tremendously well winning Best Male, Best Female and Reserve Champion with a Tup Lamb as well as a fantastic Ewe taking the Championship.

The Sheep were under the eye of their Judge Tom Fitzsimon (Sunnyhills Flock) who had the tricky job of casting his expert eye over some top quality sheep. The two sheep he chose were both excellent examples of the breed.

Keith Denby won the Aged Tup class for the 3rd year running with the same Tup, Carnforth Patriot.

Alan Blair won the Tup Lamb, Aged Ewe, Lamb with Best Gigot and Group of 3 classes. Geoff Richmond won the Shearling Ewe class and Andrew Bailey won the Ewe Lamb class. The two young handler winners in different age categories were Robert Denby and Harry Collier.

J36 Sale Reports Tuesday 30th May A better show of Breeding Sheep forward today at J36 saw Mule Hoggs with Texel Lambs at Foot top at £175, twice, from R & E Holmes, The Green. Aged Ewes with Twin Lambs topped at £150 from BJ Bowness, Blea Tarn. Buyers are still looking for younger sheep with Lambs at foot.

There was an entry of 501 Spring Lambs at the weekly sale at J36. There was a good show of lambs put before six active buyers, buying across ten accounts. Heavy weight lambs sold to a top of £119 a head from TW Nelson & Son, Cockrigg Farm. Handy weight lambs sold to the strongest trade topping at 266p/kg for 39kg Beltex from AE Atkinson & Son, Stubb Farm. Beltex Lambs sold to an average of £100 per head with local butchers looking for best quality lambs.

A large end of season show of Prime Hoggs forward today saw 413 sell to a strong trade. Continental hoggs topped at £100 for a pen of Texels from FP & G Slater, Bellart Howe and also for a large pen of Scotch Blackface Hoggs. Heavier hoggs were in demand today averaging 193p/kg. A strong show of Herdwick Hoggs sold to a top of £83 GM & AJ Jackson, Little Eccleston Hall Cottage with an overall average of £81 seen for all Herdwicks forward.

An overall average of 193p/kg was achieved.

A smaller show of Cast Sheep sold to another respectable trade with a lot of hill bred ewes in the market. Horned ewes topped at £74 for a Rough Fell from JE Wightman, Crabtree Farm with Swaledales selling to £70 from JW Thwaite, Eskew Beck with all Swales forward averaging £52. Strong continental Ewes were in demand, topping at £118 for a pen of Texels from E Dodgson & Son, Spital Farm with Beltex Ewes from the same good home selling to £110.
