NWA J36 Whiteley Hey Flock Production Monday 31st August st

On Monday 31 August 2015 the 14 Annual Production sale on behalf of the Whiteley Hey Flock of Mr P Slater was held at North West Auctions, Junction 36 Rural Auction Centre, Kendal in conjunction with Mitchells Auction Co, Cockermouth. A packed ringside of buyers from across the UK many of which are returning customers all bid hard for the genuine stock Paul produces. The consignment of 550 head included 144 shearling rams, 2 aged rams, 54 2 & 3 shear ewes, 200 gimmer shearlings & 150 gimmer lambs of which 50 head were black Beltex x Texel. All the stock was presented in their natural form with tight skins and exceptional carcasses. The prices started as they mean to go on with the first lot in the ring was a pair of Texel 2 shear ewes sired by a Langside ram purchased from Kelso 2012 for £8000 the ewes sold for £400 per head to M/s Beard Dormanstead, Carlisle. It was lot 3 a pair of Beltex x Texel 2 shear ewes which realised the top price in the female section at £470 per head. The pair are sired by the Black Jack ram and also sold to M/s Beard. Gimmer shearlings up held trade with a leading price of £380 being paid for 2 Beltex x Texels sired by the 10,000gns Ardstewart Swagger Jagger ram purchased in 2013 this pair also found a home with M/s Beard. Peaking at £260 per head were a pair of Beltex x Texel gimmer lambs which are well grown with brilliant confirmation once again they were sired by the Swagger Jagger ram. Purchasing this pair was Mr M Atkinson, Beck Hill, Richmond. At the same money was a pair of Black Beltex x Texel lambs which sold to S Oliver, Nesbit Cottage, Wooler. The black Beltex x Texel females sold well and gained a lot of interest. The leading price Texel ewe lambs was a trio sired by the £9000 Brijon ram purchased in 2014 from Kelso. Leading price of the day went to lot 25 a very tight skinned Beltex x Texel shearling ram which sold to M/s Knight, Stephney Farm, Calderbridge for 2300gns. He is sired by the 10,000gns Ardstewart Swagger Jagger he was presented with great carcase and character. The next highest price came in the form of a pure Texel sired by Pauls Garngour ram purchased at the 2012 Kelso ram sale of £4800, this ram sold to M/s Price & Rogers of Lower Sgynlas, Hereford for 2100gns. In all 19 rams broke the £1000 barrier. Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 28th August A good show of 100 Cast Cows this morning met by a full ringside of buyers. Meaty cows were 10pence dearer on the week. Topping trade this morning was D & DW Prickett, Farleton with a Blue cow realising 179.5ppk. Top gross came from Wallbank Farms Ltd with a Black and White heifer totalling £1165.50. Black and white cows sold to a top of 149.5ppk from DJ, A & L Sutcliffe, Winmarleigh.

A big show of Store Cattle today with 471 forward, with a ringside of regular and returning buyers present. Opening the sale was a couple of cows and calves, selling to £1100. A big difference in price between non-farm assured and farm assured cattle, vendors are urged to consider Farm Assurance. Cattle with plenty of flesh and cover were a good trade, topping at £1340 for a Blue Bullock from TE, JS & SA Carruthers, Underbarrow. Limousins closely followed, selling to £1330 for a 27month bullock from JA & LR Wilson, Millom. Continental heifers sold to £1320 for a Blonde from W & J Parkinson, Garstang. Native bred cattle sold to a top of £1300 for a 26month Angus bullock from CE & MA Hewitt, Forton Bank. Friesian cattle sold to £1090 from PA & D Slater, Barnacre, Black and White cattle on the whole, dearer on the week. Buyers are paying a premium for groups of cattle and are requesting that cattle are batched together where possible.

Sixty Six Calves forward this morning, topping at £450 for a 12 week Blue from G & ME Woodhouse, Ellel. Angus bulls to £342 from Wallbank Farms Ltd. Limousins to £330 from Allan & Sam Bargh. Montbelliarde calves sold to £255 from JR Pye Hatters Farm. Friesian calves dearer on the week, topping at £240 for a smart 8 week old calf from WN & D Smith & Sons, Cocker House. Well grown calves £138-£155 with smaller fleshier sorts £60-£95. Black and Whites averaged £88/head.

Monday 31st August The strong trade for Prime Lambs continues at Lancaster with a larger entry of 1341 selling to a market average of 147ppk. Buyers continue to look for well finished lambs, with lambs lacking finish penalised today. Topping trade this morning were a pen of heavy weight lambs from C & B Lowther, Over Wyresdale, realising £80/head at 55kgs. Top price per kilo came from Peter Pye of Marl House with light weight 34kg lambs achieving 182ppk.

A better show of Cast Ewes this morning, selling to a top of £116 for a Texel ewe from Elsie Hartley, Hornby. Tups sold to a top of £91 for a Texel from GR Newsham, Galgate. Mules sold to £73 from WM Pye, Stodday. Horned sheep to £48 from RH & C Ayrton, Abbeystead and Cheviots to £38 for a pen of 20 from SE & J Gorst, Littledale.

J36 Sale Reports Thursday 27th August The weekly sale of Calves had a reduced entry of 26 calves and stirks forward. Calves continue to be good to sell with British Blue bulls selling to £360 from A & E Barnes of Brackenfold as Blue bulls sold to an average of £337. British Blue heifers sold to £330 from MH & AR Robinson of Homescales. Black and White rearing calves sold to a top of £150 from CG Birkett of Carnforth with other better rearing types selling £130 plus. All Black & Whites averaged £101. Dairy Shorthorn bull calves sold to £142 from John Handley of School House. A few stirks in the market saw Limousin bullocks sell to £610 from Ivan Slater of Hudsbrook Farm. Pure bred British Friesians four month old sold to £450 from CS & SE Wood & Son of Penrith.

The weekly sale of Store Lambs saw a top price of £53.50 for Texel x from D Woof with many pens of stronger lambs £50-£52.50, medium keep £46-£49 with smallest long keep lambs £38-£42. Hill Lambs sold to £43 for Mules and £40 for Rough Fell. All classes of Lambs competed for with new buyers in attendance and keen to return.

Winning Lambs sell to £83 and 193p/kg The weekly sale of Prime Sheep saw 2958 forward comprising of 2236 lambs and 722 cast sheep. An active ringside of 10 buyers competed for all types of lambs producing an overall average of 158.7p/kg. Best meated first cross lambs £72-£80 (160-150p/ kg) selling to a top price of £83 (193p/kg). Mules and Mashams sold to £68 (154p/kg) with others generally £55-£62. Today’s sale included a prize show for Texel sired Lambs sponsored by the North West Texel Breeders Club and kindly judged by Mr Alan Beecroft, Countrystyle Meats, Lancaster. The first prize ¾ lambs from J & M Cockett sold for the top price of £83 with others £81, £80.

A slightly easier trade than seen over the previous weeks strong trades. Continental ewes and strong Suffolk x ewes sold around the eighty pound mark with bigger ewes generally selling in the late eighties. Bigger Mule ewes sold to £76 from M Cook of Hollin Hall with plenty of strong Mule ewes selling mid to late sixties. Swaledale ewes saw stronger fleshed types easily selling in the thirties with plenty of leaner and feeding types selling around the thirty pound mark.
