Fortnightly Sale of Calves, Stirks, Cull Cows, Store Cattle & Suckled Calves BEEF BREEDING CATTLE - Beef Breeding Cattle today sold to a top price of £1500 for a 5-year-old Limousin x Cow with a 3month Aberdeen Angus x Bull Calf at foot from RJ&R Holden, Silecroft, who sold other cows with calves at £1290.

STORE CATTLE - All Store Cattle experienced a fierce trade with buyer’s keen to secure replacement stock to fill sheds and take advantage of the improved fat cattle trade. Store Bulls sold to a top price of £1170 for Luings from Low Moor Howe Farm, Winster who sold others at £940. Younger bulls sold to £740 for Charolais x from JE Stables & Sons, Grange over Sands.

Steers sold to a price of £1030 for a Limousin x from JE Stables & Sons who sold others at £1020 and £1000. Younger steers sold to £980 for Limousin x from TW Nelson & Son, Stainton with other steers regularly £940-£980.

Heifers sold to a price of £1070 for a Limousin x from CD Slinger & L Eaton, Middleton. A large entry of Native sired Heifers forward at todays sale selling to £850 for Aberdeen Angus x from JE Wightman, Lupton, who sold others to £800 and Hereford x at £790.

A consignment of Belted Galloway Heifers from MB Meredith, Coniston attracted keen interest for future breeding selling to £740, with others at £680.

SUCKLED CALVES - The 3rd sale of Suckled Calves saw a large crowd of new and existing buyers in attendance, all keen for additional stock from this renowned sale.

Suckler steers old to £850 for a Limousin x from JG&RM Hall, Keld with other Limousin x steers selling to £830 from CD Slinger & L Eaton, Middleton and £800 from Messrs Hodgson, Windermere.

A consignment of Charolais x Steers from R&BJ Cleasby, Broughton in Furness sold to £810. Younger steers sold £770 for 5 month old Limousin x from B Heyes, St Helens who sold others at £750 and £710. Simmental x Steers from MG&WD Burton, Barnard Castle sold to £760.

Suckler Heifers sold to a price of £850 from JG&RM Hall, Keld with Simmental x selling to £770 from MG&WD Burton. Heifer calves predominately being younger at 4-6 months sold, selling to £660 from R&BJ Cleasby and £650 Limousin x B Heyes.

A feature of todays sale was a special section of native sired calves which attracted several specialist purchasers.

Beef Shorthorn x steers sold to £830 from J Black & Son, Kentmere. An entry of Sim Luing bullocks from Low Moor Howe Farm attracted keen interest selling to £800, with others at £790.

Hereford x Steers (5mo) sold to £640 from G&ID Postlethwaite, Howgill with other younger native steers generally £520-£600.

Galloway and Blue Grey steers sold to £550 from JR Handley, Whinfell who sold others at £500.

Native sired heifers sold to £560 for a Blue Grey from JR Handley, with Hereford x heifers selling to £470 from RC&SC Cleasby, Broughton in Furness and Aberdeen Angus to £450 from PJ&HJ Onions, Carnforth.

CULL COWS & OTM CATTLE - NWA J36 continues to attract large numbers of Cull Cows, which today sold to a sharper trade than recent weeks with several buyers actively looking for cattle suitable for further finishing.

The sale peaked at 147.5p/kg for a Charolais x Cow from P&SA Edmondson, Barrows Green, who sold other heavy Continental cows at 137.5p/kg and 134.5p/kg.

Beef cows suitable for further finishing regularly sold at 120p/kg-130p/kg.

Dairy bred cows sold to a top price of 119.5p/kg for Dairy Shorthorns from Messrs Robinson, Old Hutton, who sold others to 117.5p/kg and 114.5p/kg. Holstein Friesians sold to 109.5p/kg from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe and Swedish Red sold to 104.5p/kg from A&B Pickthall, Hincaster.

Top grossing cow today was £1160 for Charolais x Cow From P&SA Edmondson, Barrows Green with others selling over £1100 from JT Procter, Flookburgh.

OTM Heifers sold to a top price of 181.5p/kg and £1214 for a Charolais x from CI Briggs, Ambleside, with Dairy heifers selling to 159p/kg from CM&CS Chappelhow, Clifton and £1009 from TK Robinson, Old Hutton. A single Cull Bull from RG Robinson, Farleton sold at 127.5p/kg or £1032 for an Aberdeen Angus.

CALVES & WEANLINGS - 90 Calves and Weanlings forward today selling to a continued good trade with another young show of calves. Best calves continue to be very well bid for and selling to a fast trade. Middle beef calves continue to sell to a strong trade. Good black and white calves were in short supply. The consignment of Simmental Bull calves from RF & CE Hodgson, Pennington led the way today at £425. British Blue bulls again well bid for, with all British Blue bulls averaging £348. This section topped at £410 from DR & C Galbraith, Grayrigg with others from the same good home selling to £385. J Hornby & Son, Stank had a wonderful run of Blue bulls sold to £385. A small show of native bulls forward. Longhorn bulls peaked at £260 from The Inman Family, Witherslack with Hereford bulls selling to £255 again from J Hornby & Son. Messrs Pickthall, New Hutton, keeps bringing the goods to J36 calf sale, their run of British Blue heifers peaked at £380 with others to £365. RF & CE Hodgson Simmental heifers were all well bid for with a top of £330, others from the same home selling to £315. A small show of black and white calves forward, with many more needed to fulfil buyers orders. Topping the sale was a wonderful Friesian from Lawkland Hall selling to £255. All weanlings were keenly bid for, Shuttleworth & Brown sold Hereford bulls to £585 with Limousin's from the same home selling to £550. MG & WD Burton sold British Blue heifers to £555. The run from Messrs Young, Lindale sold to £505 for blue heifers at just 4 months of age.

Weekly Sale of Calves, Cull Cows & Store Cattle CALVES & WEANLINGS The weekly sale of calves had an entry of sixty forward this week. The entries forward were a lot younger than what has been seen of late. Once again at Lancaster there was plenty of demand for all types of calves with many buyers leaving empty handed.

Leading the way was the consignment of British Blue bulls from JP & C Robson, Garstang selling to £405, £395 and £385; plenty of good beef bulls selling in excess of £300. Beef heifer calves sold to £310 for a British Blue from GH Sanderson & Family, Catforth; plenty of beef heifers selling in the three-hundred-pound region.

The demand for Black and White bull calves at Lancaster continues to increase, this week they sold to a top of £165 from WG Farms, Cockerham.

Lancaster’s monthly sale of stirks had 120 forward with a large variety on offer. Stirks that are well grown continue to be in big demand and more required to fulfil our buyer’s requirements. Steers sold to a top of £850 for an Angus from JK & B Birkett, Morecambe who also sold Flekvieh bullocks to £790. Other leading prices saw an 11-month-old British Blue bull selling to £850 from O & H Melling, Kirkham. The heifer trade topped at £740 for a Limousin from JE Harrison, Greenhalgh. Well grown beef sired (eight months to yearlings) stirks often sold in the region of seven hundred. A larger number of dairy bullocks forward saw yearling black and white bullocks selling to £600 from G Rawlinson, Astley Moss.

STORE CATTLE Lancaster’s weekly sale of store cattle enjoyed a brisk trade, which continues to look strong for beef in the near future. Leading the way was the consignment from H Chapman and Son, Middleton selling Charolais steers to £1370, others sold to £1360 from JM & AG Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. Other continental bullocks saw British Blue steers selling to £1340 from D & N Davis, Nateby.

Native bullocks saw Hereford’s top at £1370 from SJ Brass, Ingleton with Angus Bullocks from the same home selling to £1330 and others to £1300 from J & M Cockett, Ingleton. A lot of strong steers easily selling in excess of the £1200 mark.

Heifers this week sold to a top of £1350 from R Capstick and Son, Ingleton with a British Blue who also sold Limousins to £1260.

Other British Blue heifers sold to £1330 from K & DE Woodhouse, Ellel. Best heifers today sold mid eleven hundreds and upwards.

Dairy steers sold to a top of £1300 for Montbeliardes from JM & AG Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. Black and White bullocks this week sold to a top of £1060 from WR Clarke, Pilling.

All store cattle forward today averaged £1,048.

CULL COWS & OTM CATTLE A slightly reduced number of cast cows with 114 forward at Lancaster this week selling to an overall market average 121p/kg.

Leading the way was OTM Limousin heifers from T Allen & Co, Middleton selling to 209.5p/kg or £1401.56. Young Limousin cows selling to 204.5p/kg from Ballacutchel Farms, Isle of Man. Cast steers twice sold to a top of 189.5p/kg twice, firstly for stabilisers from AE & PC Capstick, Heversham and British Blues to the same price from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale grossing £1174.

Young British Blue cows sold to 189.5p/kg from GR & A Foy, Conder Green. Black and White heifers sold to £1093 from J & G Thornley, Kirkham.

Best dairy cows sold in excess of the thousand mark this week peaking at £1108 from C & AJ Woodhouse, Millom followed by £1084 from J Bargh and Son, Morecambe. Dairy cows saw the best sell between 124-130p/kg with real good meated cows selling beyond this.

Weekly Sale of Prime Lambs & Cast Sheep PRIME LAMBS Lancaster had an increased entry and an improved trade with 758 lambs forward selling to an overall market average of 208p/kg and an SQQ of 210p/kg which included a large number of upland and horned lambs. Handy weighted lambs between 38 and 45kg continue to be in strongest demand with Continental lambs often selling towards 220p/kg. Heavy weighted lambs were a sharper trade often selling over 200p/kg.

It was the consignment from J Bargh and Son, Morecambe that led the way selling a Texel lamb to £110, weighing 45kg and purchased by Kennedy Butchers, Morecambe. This was followed by 52kg Texel lambs from P Lawrenson and Son, Chorley selling to £109 purchased by George Blacklidge. Other lambs from this home saw Texels sell to £108 twice and £107.50 and Charollais lambs selling to £107, £106.50 and £105.50. Other noted prices for Texel saw T & CM Kelsall and Sons, Chipping selling 54kg lambs to £109. The consignment of Texel lambs from L & A Duckett, Higher Bartle sold to £108 and £106.50; with plenty more pens of lambs selling in excess of the one hundred pound mark. Best confirmation lambs saw Beltex lambs sell to 274p/kg from S Bosworth, Burnley with Texel lambs selling to 250p/kg from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof with plenty of better pens around 240p/kg.

A larger proportion of upland lambs in the market today, saw Mules sell to £94 weighing 47kg from T & CM Kelsall and Sons, Chipping with other Mule lambs to £93.50 at 45kg from DC Miller, Claughton on Brock and £93 at 45kg from D Gardner, Brookhouse. All Mule lambs forward averaged 205p/kg or £88.18. Horned lambs sold to a top of £85 for 43kg Dalesbreds from T & CM Kelsall and Sons, Chipping with Swaledale lambs to £82 from JR & J Gorst, Quernmore with all Swale lambs forward averaging 200p/kg.

There was an increased entry of cast sheep in the market selling to an increased trade. Leading the way were Leicester rams from AC & K Pye, Abbeystead selling to £148 with others selling to £102. Other rams saw Suffolks selling to £106 from DJ Hay, Cockerham. All tups forward averaging over £100. Once again stronger Continental ewes sold over the one hundred pound mark topping at £108 from JM Sanderson, Halton, with plenty of pens of Continental ewes selling in the nineties. Mule ewes sold to £80 from Ripley St Thomas School.

Larger numbers of upland ewes were on offer today and saw Cheviot ewes selling to £84 from SE & J Gorst, Littledale with others from the same home to £73. Horned ewes sold to a top of £65 for Scotch Blackface from G Blacklidge, Chorley with other horned sheep to £61 from FK & F Woodhouse, Scorton with plenty more selling towards £60.

Weekly Sale of Prime Lambs & Cast Sheep PRIME LAMBS The weekly sale of Prime Lambs at J36 had 1446 forward selling to an overall market average of 208p/kg. There was a very mixed entry of lambs today with many vendors trying to take advantage of the trade with some lambs being under finished.

Heavyweight lambs continue to be a strong trade at J36 selling in excess of the 200p/kg mark with better types of heavyweight lambs selling over the 210p/kg. Texels lambs led the way selling to a top of £124 from JB Airey, Kendal and £115.50 from S Gibson, Underbarrow. Suffolk lambs sold to £117 and £115.50 from WT Whitaker & Son, Nether Kellet. With plenty more pens of heavyweight lambs easily selling at the £110 mark.

Handy weighted, well fleshed lambs continue to be in most demand, with Beltex lambs particularly in strong demand today.

The consignment from JG & PH Thompson, Selside sold to 251p/kg, 248p/kg and 236p/kg with other noted prices 248p/kg from SJ & NW Wood, Windermere and 240p/kg from AR & BJ Thompson, Selside. Plenty of tidy, well fleshed lambs selling around the 220p/kg - 230p/kg.

Mule lambs topped at £100.50 from R & EA Gardner, Brigsteer, with plenty more pens of Mules easily selling to the £90 mark.

A larger number of lightweight Swaledale lambs were forward today weighing between 30 – 35kg and regularly selling for 200p/kg and more.

Weekly Sale of Prime Lambs & Cast Sheep CAST SHEEP There were 450 cast sheep forward today with a very mixed show of ewes at J36, with all types being sharper on the week. Texel ewes led the way once again selling to £125 from PK & R Woof, Stainton with others selling to £105 twice from MJ Waller, Lupton and JC Dunning, Tebay, with many other pure bred ewes selling over the £100 mark. A run of Leicester ewes from RH & C Ayrton, Abbeystead sold to £95.

Strong Mules were in short supply today with many more easily being sold; a top of £80 from JB & S Thorpe, Sunbiggin with others to £79 from RH & J Walling, Crosthwaite. Over 90% of ewes forward today were hill bred ewes with all types keenly bid for.

Cheviot ewes peaked at £90 from WL & FD Richards, Beckside. A penful of Rough fell ewes from M Bland & Son, Staveley sold to £67.

Swaledale ewes peaked at £63 from WM & JE Shuttleworth, Barbon with the best Swaledales ewes regularly selling over the £60 mark, and all Swaledale ewes forward averaging £44. Strong Herdwick ewes from WL & & FD Richards, Beckside sold to £58.

All cast rams were eagerly bid for once again with Leicesters selling to £113 from RH & C Ayrton, Abbeystead with other rams from the same home selling to £109. Continental rams sold above the £100 mark with a top of £113 from M Horner, Preston.
