NWA J36 Christmas Show & Sale of Pigs The Christmas show and sale of pigs had a bumper entry of 186 forward. The pre-sale show was very kindly judged by Mr John Stott of Crosscrake. There were two classes with the pair of prime white pigs being won by P Woof of Staintion and Pair of Coloured pigs won by R Strong of Dearham. The trade was very selective with an extremely large number of pigs forward for the day’s sale. Buyers were looking for finished pigs with good conformation with look pigs and pigs lacking finish very difficult to sell.

The trade was topped at £150 from Peter Woof of Staintion with his Pietrain selling to £150. Good conformation prime pigs selling over £100. A lack of interest in weaners especially with this wet weather, saw better types sell in the thirties with others struggle around the twenty pound mark.

Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 27th November A straight trade for the Store Cattle forward at Lancaster. It was in keeping with other markets with numbers less than previous weeks. The well fleshed short keep cattle a good trade and the young long term cattle good too sell and in demand but the in-between cattle harder to place this week. Steers sold to a top of £1370 of from W Garnett & Son of Ackenthwaite with a pair of Limousins. British Blue heifers sold to a top of £1200 from JD & GM Bracken of Greenlands Farm.

A smaller entry of Cast Cows forward this week then previous week but still over one hundred in the market with the trade in keeping with over local markets.

The purchasers are struggling to sell the meat at the other end and large quantity of cast cows nationwide has led to the slump in trade. An entry once again mainly consisting of dairy cattle. Black and white cows sold to 139.5ppk from J Bland of Arnside Tower with plenty of well fleshed 115 and 122 pence per kilogram. All black and white cows sold to an overall average of 87ppk.

An entry of 61 Calves and Stirks this morning put before a full complement of buyers. Beef calves a touch easier on the week, topping at £395 for a blocky Blue Bull from JH Towers & Son, Tunstall. Other blues sold to £390 from F & E Harrison, Wray. A run of Simmentals from Eddy Newsham, Galgate sold to £290 for fortnight old bulls. Black and White calves to a top of £142 from Allan and Thomas Ward, best calves in excess of £100 with nice fleshy rearing calves £62-£85, overall average of £68.43 for all black and whites.

Stirks saw the best trade with 19 Black and Whites forward from various vendors. Trade topped at £295 for a trio of 5month Friesians from A & E Clarkson, Thurnham, others to £250 for 4month olds from R Gregory, Cabus. More beef bred stirks needed to meet buyers demand.

Monday 27th November A strong trade at Lancaster with Prime Lambs averaging 155ppk. Mules and Continental lambs, between 44kg and 50kg, were the best too sell. A large proportion of upland bred lambs in the market today were eagerly bid for with many saying mules sold to the best trade on the day. Vendors with non-farm assured lambs are strongly advised to become farm assured to gain full financial potential. Non-farm assured lambs were strongly penalized.

Trade for Cast Sheep was somewhat sticky this morning, as a result of a poorer show of sheep and two buyers unfortunately missing. Topping trade was a single Texel ewe realising £90 with other Texels to £68 with Mule ewes to £57.

J36 Sale Reports Thursday 26th November In the Store & Breeding Cattle ring there was a better show of cattle today. Top price was £1170 for a lovely Limousin heifer from JD & M Capstick, Fellside Farm.

There were 41 Cast Cows forward. A plainer show of cows in today with only a handful of meaty ones, buyers asking for more fleshy cows!! Top price of 143.5p/kg was paid for a Stabiliser cow from A Dixon & Son, Kit Cragg.

A strong entry of 105 Calves forward this morning was met by an active ring of buyers with all types eagerly bid for. Buyers were looking to purchase calves with plenty of potential. Black and whites saw well fleshed sorts good too sell with leaner types more difficult place. Beef calves sold to a top of £435 for British Blue bulls from JW & TE Sharp of Flodder Hall with heifers from the same home selling to £405 with well grown Continental bull calves two month old easily selling £350 plus. A large entry of good young beef calves with bulls and heifers selling between £260 and £310 regular away. Best types of weaned black and whites selling over £200 topping at £262 from G Wilson of Low Field Farm, good young dark rearers sold over £100 with plenty of rearers selling between £70 and £90. A larger selection of stirks than seen for some time with some better quality types on offer.

The stirks topped at £545 for a four and a half month old British Blue from DW Robinson & V Finch of Low Rowell Farm. MRI bulls at 6 month old sold to £510 from M Bowe of Low Plains Farm.

STORE LAMBS SELL TO £58.50 AT WEEKLY SALE The weekly sale of store lambs once again sold to the recent strong trade seen at NWA J36. Lambs sold to a top price of £58.50 for Mules from M Gibson, Mouse Syke with other Mules £43 - £49. Continental lambs peaked at £57 for Texel x from G & ID Postlethwaite, Riddings with others £48 - £55. A large entry of pure hill lambs experienced increased interest with Rough Fells selling to £55.50 and plenty of other pens of better grown sorts £45 - £54. Swaledales sold to £48 with others generally mid £30’s, long keep Cheviots achieved a top of £46.50 and Herdwick x lambs £38.50. Tup lambs easier to sell with men looking for lambs to put inside peaking at £54.50 for best grown Continentals, mediums £40 - £48 and Hill lambs £28 - £36. A few unexpected feeding ewes forward today selling to £55.50 for Rough Fells and others at £51.

Tuesday 1st December The weekly sale of Prime Lambs had a smaller entry of 1896 forward this week but sold to a stronger trade then the previous week with SQQ selling to an average of 167ppk and a market average of 164ppk. An active ring of buyers all keen to purchase lambs meant that all lambs old to their potential. Better quality lambs sold between 180 and 190ppk topping at 190 from the Thompson Family of Poppy Farm. The top price of the day came from J & R Waller of Hallbeck selling Texel lambs top £83. Mules continue well with heavy weight inside mules selling in excess of £75 topping at £78 from F & SA Edmondson of Netherhouses with all mules selling to an average of 154 pence per kilo.

The weekly sale of Cast Ewes had 382 head forward. The sale topped at £88 for a Beltex Tup from S & A Gardner, Arnside. Ewes sold to a top of £83 for a Texel ewe from DB & D Cook, Ulverston and Suffolks to £82 from the same home. Mules topped at £77 from WJ Barker, Arkholme to average £56 for all forward.

Buyers still cautious of over fat ewes. Horned sheep sold well, topping at £60 for a pen of 3 Roughs from BJ Bainbridge, Shap. Swales sold to £50 for a swale ewe from GA Guy, Lunsdale House. Others to £49 on two occasions from Bob Lawrence, Holme Farm, roughs averaged a respectable £52 whilst swales averaged £43.
