J36 Rural Auction Centre Thursday 25th July Early Breeding Sheep Sale The early breeding sheep sale at J36 saw the largest entry of breeding sheep to date for this sale, which is in its second year, gaining more interest each year from buyers near and a far.

The trade topped at £180, twice, for Dorset gimmer shearlings, that had lambed, from Sophie Waller of Killington who also sold 1 and 2 crop Dorset ewes to £155. Continental shearlings sold to £170 and £140 from Stephen and Barbra Capstick of Old Hutton.

Mule gimmer shearlings sold to £145, £142 from EI, EA & TW Wilson of Grange over Sands and all Mule gimmer shearlings forward sold to a market average of £138. Mule ewes sold to a top of £125 and Continentals to £122 both from MJ & K Ayrton of Cockerham with all Mule ewes forward selling to market average of £106.

Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 28th July The weekly Store Cattle sale at Lancaster saw a mixed entry of quality forward today with the trade slighter harder work, especially leaner types, as there are talks of the prime cattle price slipping a little.

Bullocks sold to a high of £1370 and £1350 for a Limousin from RH Dodgson of Burton in Lonsdale. Aberdeen Angus Bullocks topped at £1340 for a pen of four from AG Stafford of Out Rawcliffe. Thirty seven cattle sold in excess of £1200 with a dozen selling in excess of £1300. Limousin Heifers sold to a top of £1300 from Phoenix Grain of Tarleton.

Friesian Bullocks sold to £1080 from JM & AG Swarbrick of Out Rawcliffe, with strongest, fittest black and whites still selling in excess of £1000.

The weekly sale of Cast Cows had a similar entry of 88 forward. The trade saw well fleshed, meaty cows selling to a sharper trade than the previous week with lean and plainer type cows selling to a similar trade.

The market average saw an overall average of 122p/kg with all black and whites selling to 114p/kg.

OTM Aberdeen Angus Steers sold to 189.5p/kg from J Maxell of Halton. Young Beef Cows saw better types sell either side of the 180p/kg mark, topping at 181.5p/kg from R Eshborn of Glasson Dock for a Limousin.

Best black and white cows topped at 147.5p/kg from JB & JB Lawson of Cockerham with other well fleshed dairy cows selling around the 140p/kg mark. Selling in excess of £1100 per head, topping at £1272 was a dairy cow, once again, from JB & JB Lawson, with others to £1228 from P & M Crackles of Burrow.

The monthly sale of Stirks had a larger entry than advertised with 90 forward, selling to another competitive trade, with younger, softer Stirks slightly harder to place this month due to the weather.

The best yearling Bullocks sold in the region of £800 with British Blues topping at £845 from MJ & K Ayrton of Thurnham and Aberdeen Angus Bullocks to £815 and £800 from ME Forshaw & Son of Thornley. Suckler Bred Limousin Bullocks at eight months old from T Ayrton & Sons sold to £765 and £760. Dairy bred bullocks saw Fleckviehs top at £720 at seven months old.

Heifers saw yearling British Blues sell to £720 and £685 from MJ & K Ayrton, with Aberdeen Angus Heifers the same age sell to £705 and £690 from ME Forshaw and Son. The weekly sale of Calves saw an entry of over 50 calves forward, mainly consisting of Black and Whites selling to a similar trade with many of the Black and Whites forward being very Holstein type calves.

The calf trade topped at £330 for Aberdeen Angus Bull Calves from Phillip Halhead of Cockerham who also sold British Blue Bulls to £315, all just over a month of age.

Aberdeen Angus Heifers sold to £315 and £305 from Joylan Farms of St Michaels Black and White Bull Calves saw better rearing calves on milk sell over the £100 mark and nicer dark sorts in excess of £150, topping at £158 from J & M Sanderson of Kirkham. A lot of young Black and Whites between 2 and 3 weeks of age saw the nice dark rearing types sell between £50 and £70.

Lancaster Sale Reports Monday 31st July The weekly sale of Prime Lambs saw a smaller entry put before buyers but there was more fleshed lambs forward to meet buyers’ specifications. It was good to have regular weight lambs selling in the Eighties and Nineties this week. The day’s trade topped at £105 for Texel Lambs from GR Newsham of Sellerley Fields. M Graham of Quernmore sold Texels to £98, with Andrew Butler of Hambleton selling two pens of Texels to £97 and TR Prickett of Hutton Roof also achieving £97 for Texel Lambs. Beltex Lambs sold to £92 or 224p/kg for IT Richardson of Goosnargh.

Better types of Continental Lambs sold between 210p/kg and 220p/kg with buyers paying a premium for well-fleshed hopper fed lambs.

A few more Mules are now on the market which saw heavy Mule lambs top at £90 from Alisdair Prickett of Farleton with BD Gill of Ingleton selling 45kg Mules to £82.

Spring Lamb Top Prices: TEX: £105 Sellerley Fields; £98 Terrace Farm; £97 Park Farm Barn. BEL: £92 Northgate; £74 Farleton House. MULE: £90 Farleton House; £82 Yarlsber; £74 Highfield Farm. Once again, 150 Cast Sheep at Lancaster were met by a busy ring of buyers, eager to purchase all types of ewes. The day’s trade topped at £120 for Texel Tups from T Nelson & Partners of Cockerham. Biggest Texel Ewes, once again, were selling around the £100 mark topping at £104 from J & H Huddleston of Brookhouse.

Mule Ewes sold to £91, twice, from GS Lander of Warrington with Strong Mule ewes still selling around the £80 mark. Horned Ewes topped at £65 for Rough Fells from E Lund & Son of Ingleton.

J36 Sale Reports Thursday 27th July The second Store Lamb sale of the season saw an entry of over 800 forward once more, with more interest from buyers with a busier ring of purchasers and potential purchasers. As the prime lamb trade dipped at start of the week buyers were ever so slightly more cautious in purchasing sheep.

The trade topped twice at £80 for Texel lambs from RT & ME Sutton of Stainton and Suffolks from JA Chapman of Singleton Park. Best well finished short keep lambs continue to sell in excess of the £70 mark as medium keep lambs weighing in the early to mid-thirties sold in to the mid-sixties. Mule wether lambs sold to £59 from RI Dixon of Low Newton and £58 from B & HM Wilson of selside.

Tuesday 1st August The weekly sale of Prime Lambs saw a slightly larger entry forward with the trade sharper on the week. Lambs were selling 18 pence dearer this week, selling to a market average of 193p/kg.

Well-fleshed, Farm Assured lambs weighing in the early 40kg bracket were in the strongest demand and easiest to sell. Best type export lambs sold to a top of 243.8p/kg for five Texel lambs from WJ & L Barker, Brown Edge. Plenty of nice type export lambs were selling around the 220p/kg mark, with well finished commercial lambs selling over 200p/kg.

Top price per head today was achieved by a Suffolk from R H M & S Boyren of Lowick selling to £108 with other Suffolks selling to £92.50 and £90.50. Mule lambs sold to a high of £81.50 today from R Capstick & Son, Fell End Farm.

A fantastic entry of 903 Cast Sheep sold to a sharper trade, especially hill bred and lean ewes as there was a few men in the ring today looking to purchase lean, sheared, feeding ewes.

Heavy Continental Ewes are still selling in excess of £100. The day’s trade topped at £117 for a Beltex Ewe from E Dodgson, Spital Farm who also sold Texels to £114. Best Mule ewes are still selling in excess of £80 topping at £86 from J Bargh & Son, North Farm. A lot more horned and hill bred ewes in the market saw Swales sell to £61 RS Harker & Son, Grayrigg Hall and Rough Fells sell to £59 from H Chapman & Son, Millbeck.
