NWA Lancaster Dairy Sale Tuesday 21st May The May Lancaster Dairy sale received a smaller entry this month, due to the time of year, with many farmers busy in the fields; this was also reflected in the buyers around the ring, as fewer people around today however the buyers who were present were certainly there to do business!

The show was kindly judged by John Metcalfe of Crossfell Holsteins, the sponsors for the day were John Cornthwaite, Wynnstay, J Hatton Agriculture, Zoetis & Elanco. Although numbers were thinner on the ground this was not a reflection of quality as the sale was brimming with great animals with dairy strength.

The champion animal went to James Billington of Caterall, Preston. This first placed cow was crowned champion, Stubbins Link Up Lucie (VG85) bred from 12 generations of cows scored in the top two grades, this superb cow yielding 46.kg daily seriously looked the part and realised at £2,600 to Bradleys Farms Ltd, of Preesall. Also going to this home was the reserve champion which was the first placed heifer in the non halter led class, this heifer Witherslack Caviar Vall from the Inman family yielding 30kg she sold for £1,850.

The Inman family took £2,000 for Witherslack Avalanche Ann 3rd, this super 2nd calved cow yielding 46.kg daily was keenly sought after with the hammer falling to Bradleys Farms Ltd. Another great cow sold to this home for £1,920 this cow from CG Birkett of Carnforth really looked the part an unregistered cow which calved on the 30th April and yielding 46.kg, this was 2nd place in the show. Other great heifers sold for £2,050 Berryholme Solomon Lasenza the 2nd prize heifer, calved on the 4th May and yielding 33.kg daily she boasted a great complete pedigree with the g.dam being Belfast Goldwyn Lasenza (Ex94) who was a previous Madsion and Royal Winter Fair winner, she was secured by S Forshaw & Sons of Alston, Preston.

M J & H Atkinson of Quernmore, consigned a nice run of heifers taking the best pairs first place rosette. One of these winners Wyredale Caviar Aster yielding 34.kg daily she was secured by S Forshaw & Sons, Alston Preston, who also secured Bilsrow Cayman Peg with a PLI of £439 for £1,920. Drinkall Bothers sold heifers to £1,850, and other great heifers cruised over £1,700.

Bulls sold to £1,400 for Pennine Marmite from Drinkall Bros, of Over Wyresdale.

Despite the glorious weather and how busy many were in the field the sale was very consistent throughout which resulted in a great sale again at Lancaster! Many Thanks to all of the support of the vendors and purchasers it really is appreciated.

Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 24th May Store Cattle sold to a sharper trade than expected with the trade topping at £1260 for British Blue bullocks from R & E Ladds, Kendal. This was closely followed by British Blue bullocks selling to £1230 from MD Close & Son, Arkholme, £1210 from R & E Ladds and £1190 from JM & AG Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. Angus’ sold to a top of £1220 from JM & AG Swarbrick with other Angus bullocks selling to £1180 from J Oddie & Son, Blackburn. Limousins sold to a top of £1180 for Bullocks from EE Thornton & Son, Heaton. Numerous pens of beef bullocks sold in excess of the £1100 mark. Heifers topped at £1170 for black and whites from EW & RM Towers, Hornby and Charolais to £1160 from R & EA Gardner, Brigsteer. Angus heifers topped at £1140 from J & R Waller, Killington. Black and white bullocks topped at £1090 from JM & AG Swarbrick.

There was a good quality show of Cast Cows at Lancaster today which were met with a strong trade, with an overall market average of 128p/kg achieved. There was a larger entry of OTM Heifers and bullocks through the ring today that saw a consignment from R Oldfield, Yealand Redmayne sell Angus heifers to 179.5p/kg or £1134 and 169.5p/kg with Herefords heifers selling to 174.5p/kg. Limousin OTM heifers topped at 169.5p/kg. Black and white steers sold to a top of 167.5p/kg twice, firstly from R & E Ladds, Kendal that achieved £1107 and secondly from EE Thornton & Son, Heaton. Black and white heifers sold to a top of 161.5p/kg or £1177 from AT Burrow & Son, Hornby.

Cast cows sold to a top of 151.5p/kg for Charolais from F & JM Mason, Mansergh with other beef cows to 149.5p/kg or £1148 from Barlow Bros, Croston and Limousin to 149.5p/kg from T Longton & Son, Quernmore. Plenty of good quality beef cows easily sold in excess of the 140p/kg mark.

Black and white cows sold to a top of 129.5p/kg numerous times or £1090 from J Bargh & Son, Heaton-with-Oxcliffe.

Cast bulls sold to a top of 124.5p/kg or £1283 for Angus’ from R & E Ladds.

There was a larger entry of Calves this week which were met by plenty of interest, with fresh purchasers ringside. Calves sold to a top of £380 for Angus’ from JT & B Fox, Quernmore. This was closely followed by British Blue heifers from J & G Thornley Ltd, Kirkham. Hereford bull calves sold to £335 from RA & P Miller, Barnacre with other Hereford bull calves selling to £330 and £300 from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale. British Blue bull calves from RA & P Miller sell to £325 and £300. British Blue heifer calves topped at £280 CR & A Baxter & Son, Middleton. There was s sharper black and white trade this week with a fresh buyer forward. Topping the trade this week at £142 was J Bargh & Son, Heaton with Oxcliffe with others selling to £115 and £102 from Cote Farm Partnership, Nether Kellet. Plenty of nice rearing types sold in the seventies and eighties.

There were a few stirks on offer this week which saw 6 month old British Blue bulls sell to £580 and £520 from A Green, Penrith. A good number of weanlings saw 3 month old Limousin heifers sell to £440 from JR Pye, Stalmine with Charolais bullocks selling to £410 from PS & H Eckersley, Mellor.

Monday 27th May There was a slightly smaller entry of 495 Spring Lambs forward this week selling to a sharper trade, with 9 active buyers around the ring leading to an overall market average of 229p/kg. Handy weight lambs weighing between 32kg and 39kg continue to be in strongest demand selling to a market average of 239p/kg. Top price per head this week was heavy weight Texel lambs from James Sanderson, Halton selling to £108, this was closely followed by Suffolks selling to £104 from J Lamb, Old Glasson with Texels to £104 from WM Pye, Ashton with Stodday, A & E Clarkson, Thurnham and S Blades, Arkholme. Plenty of others sold around the £100 mark. Top pence per kilo this week went to WM Pye for Texels selling to 254p/kg, purchased by Gregory Williams Butchers, Lancaster. Suffolks sold to 248p/kg from J Lamb with Texels to 248p/kg from A & E Clarkson, 246p/kg from CA & J Alty & Son, Warton and 245p/kg from JA Lambert, Out Rawcliffe.

As the Prime Hoggs begin to dry up there was an entry mainly consisting of heavy weight hoggs. This saw a slightly sharper trade for the end of the festival. The trade topped at £111 for Texels from R & DL Cornthwaite, Nateby who also sold other Texel hoggs to £100. Handy

There was a larger entry of Cast Ewes forward this week of 119 selling to, once again, another sharp trade at Lancaster. Topping the market today at £102 was Texels was S Wilson & Son, Scotforth with other Texel ewes to £99 from James Sanderson, Halton and £98 from J & R Waller, Killington. All Texel ewes forward averaged £85.25. Suffolk ewes topped at £95 from WM Pye, Ashton with Stodday with plenty of Continental ewes selling in the early nineties. Mule ewes sold to a top of £86 twice from S Kellet & Sons, Pilling and CA & J Alty & Son, Warton. Plenty of Mule ewes sold around the £80 mark, averaging £76.12. Horned sheep topped at £68 from W Pinder Jnr, Newton in Bowland with Herdwicks to £67 and Swaledales selling to £66 all from the same home. All sheep forward today averaged £77.48.

The entry of Sheep with Lambs today mainly consisted of hoggs. The trade topped at £172 for full mouthed Continental Ewes with twin lambs at foot from RG & H Preece, Roeburndale West. Mule hoggs with lambs at foot sold to a top of £155 from JS & S Atkinson, Scorton with other Mule hoggs selling to £152 from W Pinder Jnr, Newton in Bowland and others to £150 from RH & H Preece.

J36 Sale Reports Tuesday 28th May The sale of Prime Pigs had an entry of 35 forward, with all selling to an improved trade. Flying to the top of the trade was W Stamper, Chipping selling to £150 (153p/kg) for Duroc x gilts with other from the same home selling to £132 (143p/kg). Large Black gilts topped at £130 (144p/kg) from B Capstick, Sedbergh. Prime boars were keenly bid for this morning with a top of £115 (115p/kg) achieved from J MacEwan, Dumfries. All prime pigs forward this morning averaged £109.

Vendors are encouraged to pre-enter stock for the next sale on Tuesday 11th June to assist with contacting buyers. All classes of pigs will be sold at this sale.

The weekly sale of Sheep with Lambs at foot included the second show and sale of hoggs at foot. Thanks go to our pre-sale judge Mr Rob Willison for giving up his time and expertise as well as our sponsors for their continued support. The Championship rosette was awarded to the first prize pen of Mules with Suffolk lambs from Messrs G Sowerby, Ormside selling to the top price of the day of £200. The second prize pen of Mules from the same home sold to the same price. The Reserve Championship was awarded to the first prize pen of Continentals from G & KM Atkinson, Colby selling to £175. Suffolk hoggs with twin lambs sold to £170 from DJ Morland, Tebay. Plenty of pens of hoggs sold between £135 and £160.

Ewes with lambs at foot were met with plenty of demand, which saw Texel shearlings with twins at foot sell to £190 and Continental ewes with Twin lambs at foot sell to £180. Aged Continental ewes with twin lambs at foot topped at £172 from AG & ME Clarke, Cartmel Fell, with Continental ewes with single lambs selling to £162 from P Whitehead, Sedbergh. Aged Swaledale ewes with twin Charollais lambs at foot from JJ & J Towers, Lowick Green sold to £110.

There was the largest entry of Spring Lambs to date this season at J36 which were met by plenty of demand as many companies now switch over to Spring Lambs. There was an overall market average of 229p/kg with 32kg to 39kg lambs in strong demand averaging

J36 Sale Reports 236p/kg. The market topped at £112 and £110.50 for Texels from MJ Waller, Lupton. Texels from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe selling to £108 twice and Beltexs from the same home selling to £104. There was numerous pens of lambs easily selling in excess of the £100 mark.

Top pence per kilo was 281p/kg for Beltexs weighing 37kg from W Garnett & Son. This was closely followed by Texels from MJ Waller selling to 260p/kg and 256p/kg from DC, D & J Taylor, Kendal.

There was an entry of over 200 Prime Hoggs forward this week which saw a very select trade with well-finished hoggs continuing to be in very strong demand selling around the 200p/kg mark. Topping the market this week was A & L Huddleston, Wray selling heavy weight Texels to £100. Heavy weight Continental hoggs sold to £99 and £94 from T & E Burrow, Slyne. Handy weight hoggs sold to 230p/kg for Cheviots from JE Atkinson, Ulverston. Herdwicks from the same home sold to 210p/kg.
