NWA Lancaster Friday 24th June Record set at Lancaster Stirk Sale A bustling morning in the Stirk ring with buyers very eager to secure grazing cattle. Phillip Wood of Scotforth has set a new record in the Stirk ring, with a pair of Blue Heifers selling to ÂŁ820 at 9months old, closely followed by John Atkinson of Warton with a trio of Blue Heifers acheiving ÂŁ810 at 7-8months.

Bullocks were equally as a good to sell with Linda Dawson’s smart Angus realising £770, John and Andrew Metcalf, Quernmore sold Charolais to £735. Black and Whites a chunk dearer, with 10month old bullocks from Graham and James Hayhurst realising £500. As popularity increases, vendors are strongly recommended to consider marketing stirks at Lancaster at the monthly stirk sale.

Rearing calves sold well, with Blues from Phillip Halhead selling to ÂŁ410 for a nice bull, A pedigree Blue Heifer calf also realised the same money. Wallbank Farms had a very nice Angus bull which again realised ÂŁ410, the same home sold Friesian calves to ÂŁ120. After a frantic morning Ben Towers of Tunstall showed some nice calves, black and whites to ÂŁ98 and ÂŁ115 and Angus Bulls to ÂŁ340.

Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 24th June A mixed show of 203 Store Cattle forward this morning, anything with finish and quality beasts selling to a flying trade, with plenty of pens in excess of £1200, topping at £1280 for a pair of 23month old Blue bullocks from M Shepherd & Sons, Pilling.

Friesian stores a faster trade than seen in previous weeks, topping at £1060 for a single from Dave Swarbrick of Out Rawcliffe.

A number of cattle lacking finish, however all sold to their full value on the day. Bullocks averaged £1010 with Heifers averaging £985.

A good trade for Cast Cows and OTMs with a poorer show forward. Beef cows sold to 179.5ppk for a Limousin from EJ Ward & Son, Nether Kellet or a top gross of £1121 for a Charolais cow from JD & EM Brown, Scorton. Dairy cows saw a top call of 141.5ppk or £935 from Cowell and Moore, best Friesian cows of 119ppk with the next bracket 104-117ppk to average 104ppk.

Monday 27th June A larger entry of Prime Lambs forward at Lancaster 1125 being sold selling to market average of 190ppk. Beltex types and ¾ Texel types lambs still easily selling around the 200ppk mark and better types in excess of. Heavy Texel lambs from George Sanderson and Family of Blackleach House sold to £91. A larger proportion of Suffolk lambs forward today with nearly a third of lambs in being Suffolks, topping at £88.50 from JH Towers & Sons of Tunstall Hall with well fleshed Suffolk lambs selling towards 200ppk. Towards 100 light lambs between 32kg and 36kg forward today regularly selling between 193ppk and 200ppk depending on quality topping at 211ppk for 35kg Suffolk lambs from Peter Anderton of Wyre Farm.

No Hoggs this week but are required for end of the festival.

Trade remained firm this week for Cast Sheep, with buyers eager as the Ramadan Festival comes to an end. Best continental sheep £101-£111, topping at £115 for a pen of Beltex ewes. First cross Texels £80-£93 dependent on size and cover. Mules topped at £71 from GM & R Whitaker, Goose Green, best Mules £68 plus, However the vast majority of Mules forward were over fat. Swales to £68 for a pair from JR & J Gorst, Quernmore. All 108 forward averaged £76.17, ewes needed at J36 tomorrow.

J36 Sale Reports Thursday 23rd June NWA had forward a smaller show of Cast Cows. Today, due to vendors at silage and clipping with the good weather about. Top price was 131.5p (x2) for a Limousin cow from JM Case & Son, Dendron Farm selling to Dawn Meats.

Beef Calves sold to a very strong trade, with all vendors leaving pleased with prices achieved. A run of Blue bulls and heifers from JW & TE Sharp, Flodder Hall topped at £480 for a 2month 17days old bull. A total of 5 Blues in the market over £450 and 10 over £400, to average £415. Heifers to £450 with an average of £355. Other continentals saw Limousins from B Wilson, Spout House realise £400. Black and white calves topped at £108 from TK Robinson & Son, Greaves Farm. Best calves over £90 with the next bracket £50-£72, lesser sorts on realisation.

NWA had 57 Store Cattle at their fortnightly sale. Buyers were out in full force today looking for store cattle & making the trade. Younger and grazing types were a flying trade!

Highlight of the sale was a smart 15 month old Limousin Heifer from W E Brown & Son, Stockber, she was knocked down at £970 to John Bowling, Wigan.

Tuesday 28th June The weekly sale of prime lambs had a larger entry of lambs forward with 1,362 going under the gavel with a market average of 188ppk. Not as a good quality show of lambs forward as the previous week. Beltex and 3/4 bred lambs sold to 200ppk topping at 224ppk from GH Bell of Red Lodge. Heavy weight lambs in strong demand selling around 190ppk topping at £100 for 51kg Charollais lambs from WS Burrow & Sons of Gilbraltar Farm. Suffolk lambs saw better types sell well into the 190's with Suffolk lambs averaging 185ppk. First Mule lambs in the auction today saw 36kg Mule lambs sell to £60.

An entry of just over 100 hoggs forward today were eagerly bid for averaging 142ppk. Well-fleshed hoggs in strong demand with fleshed hoggs selling into the late sixties topping at £72 from Simon Woods of Causeway farm. Any hoggs remaining will be wanted for next weeks sale for end of the festival.

A big entry of sheep at J36 with 706 forward, trade remained strong from start to finish, with buyers wanting ewes for the Festival. Mules similar on the week, topping at £80 from J Bell, Wennington with a pen of 5, best sorts £75 and over, with leaner sheep dearer than the fat. Continental sheep topped at £115 from MS Blease with a Texel ewe, best continental ewes £90-107 with the next draw in the mid 80's. Hill sheep saw Swales sell to £72 for a pen of 7 ewes from WI & AM Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale and also Calderside Farm with a pair at the same price, fittest Swales £63+ with smaller, leaner sorts, £49-£56.

Roughs to £73 from JE Wightman, Crabbtree. All vendors left pleased with their trade and an overall average of £63 was achieved for all ewes forward.
