North West Auctions Weekly Report and Newsletter – 29th April

Machinery Sale at North West Auction Wednesday 29th April at J36 Rural Auction Centre The NWA J36 saw the largest entry of machinery to date, which attracted a large crowed of active bidders from all corners of the UK. Sale commenced with 400 small items which saw sale highlights to include a Jack Hammer to £120, Milk Kits to £75 and Garden Planters to £180.

Outside a combined entry for four dispersal sales saw a top price achieved of £10500 MF 4270 Tractor with other useful stockman tractors selling between £3800 and £6900. Grassland equipment sold to £12,000 for a Welger Round Baler other items includes Lely Wrapper at £5500, 24ft Cattle Trailer £2700. Grassland and Seasonal equipment continue to attract the keenest interest with well-maintained items selling to a premium.

The next sale at J36 will be on Wednesday 27th May. Early Entries invited for advertising.

Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 24th April A lesser entry of Store Cattle forward this morning with vendors holding off ready for Grass Day next week. Trade was sharper this week, with buyers seeming keener to purchase all classes, contrary to the down turn in dead weight prices. Opening the sale was a cow and calf selling to £1250. Trade topped at £1300 on three occasions this morning, with Angus and Limousin bullocks from L Parsons & Son, Cowell & Moore and GR Bargh & Co. Heifers topped at £1180 from SJ Brass, Ingleton, with a nice pen of 24month Limousins. Native bred heifers sold to £1090 from I & ME Askew, New Hutton with a 23month Angus.

Friesian bullocks sold to £1000 from James Lamb, Old Glasson and L Parsons & Son, Low Levens. A nice run of summering cattle from JS Nickson sold to £1070 for Limousin bullocks and Lim heifers to £960.

A good entry of 91 Cast Cows this morning, with plenty of quality forward were met by a flying trade. EW & RM Towers, Hornby sold a cast Fleckvieh heifer to 179.5ppk while also at this top price was a cast Lim steer from TW Nelson & Son, Stainton. Cast cows topped only 2 pence behind at 177.5ppk with a Lim cow from J & M Cockett, Ingleton. Dairy cows sold to 145.5ppk from JS & KM Wilson, Natland, this heavy weight cow also achieved the top price of the day, totalling £1237. Dairy cows averaged 117.5ppk with an overall average for all OTMs forward being 126ppk.

A nice entry of Calves this morning were met by a flying trade. The sale was made up of mainly black and whites, topping at £165 from WN & D Smith, Cockerham at 8weeks old. Best B&W’s well in advance of £115. With younger sorts £60-£98. Plain calves a fraction easier yet still dearer than previous weeks. Overall average of £83/head. Continental and native bred calves short of buyer’s requirements, however, a nice run of month old blues from Richard & Johnny Hoggarth sold to £340 for heifers and £325 for Bulls. Hereford heifers realised £270 from Steve Mason, Birkland Barrow. A run of seven 5-6month Stirks from A Shepherd, sold to £540 for Blue heifers and £595 for Blue Bulls.

Winner of the April Dugdale Nutrition Calf Competition was Wallbank Farms Ltd, selling a 41 day Angus Bull calf for £370, purchased by JW Thwaites, Tebay. Congratulations to both vendor and purchaser.

The monthly calf competition is for the highest price calf under 42 days each month, with both the vendor and the purchaser each receiving 3bags of feed courtesy of Dugdale Nutrition.

Monday 27th April Trade for Spring Lambs is still being held back by the number of hoggs coming forward. An entry of 114 this morning sold to a top of 223ppk for a pen of 5 smart 39kg lambs from Andy Wilson, Scotforth or £96/head for a single 49kg lamb form Tony Birkett, Carnforth. Best lambs 217-229ppk, with buyers looking for lambs between 39-42kg. SQQ average of 210ppk.

Another good show of Prime Hoggs for the time of year with just short of 600 forward. Again plenty of heavy lambs forward, as is being seen across the country. Topping the sale was AG Butler with a pen of Texel lambs at 40kg realising 198ppk. Best hoggs achieved 173-183ppk with an SQQ average of 172ppk. Mules sold to a top of £76.50 at 44kg from James Fryars, Kirkham. There was an increased entry of horned hoggs this morning, selling to a top of £74.50 for a pen of 10 42kg Rough Fells from Barker Farms, Cockerham. Swales to £72.50 from AG Butler, Hambleton.

Trade for Cast Sheep wasn’t as fast as has been seen in previous weeks, but in line with other centres. TM Townley, Knowsley, sold a Texel tup to realise the top price of the day of £136. Ewes to £118 on two occasions for both Texels and Suffolks. Mules to £96 from ST Birkett, Carnforth to average £83/head.

Horned sheep to £66 from Steven Park, Aughton and Cheviots to £77 from WI & H Gorst, Littledale.

More Prime Bulls forward this morning, with 11 passing through the ring. Top price per kilo came from DW & NM Alderson with a Limousin realising 181.5ppk.

Top price per head came from JM & AG Swarbrick with a Simmental achieving £1196/head. Montbeliardes to 169.5ppk from GA Haston & Son, Galgate.

Spring Breeding Sheep Sale An entry of 48 families forward this morning were met by a full complement of buyers. Buyers still looking for ewes with stronger lambs as well as younger replacement ewes. Trade reflective of the current prime stock trade, easing slightly to average £54.50/life. Full mouthed mule ewes sucking strong Texel lambs sold to £182/family from Bryan Carter, Ellel. Broken mouthed continental ewes to £172/family from J Burr, Quernmore.

J36 Sale Reports Thursday 23rd April A ring full of buyers and a roaring trade for all types of calves Black and Whites Calves were the dearest trade yet with all black and white bull calves selling in excess of £60 except one with good rearing types easily passing the £100 mark. They topped at £160 from MH & AR Robinson of Homescales for a 28 days old with a market average of £105 achieved for Black and Whites. Dairy shorthorns from John Handley of School House sold to £235. British Blue bull calves sold to £420 from JN & DJ Bowes of Low Brundrigg. A consignment of Limouson calves from Langley Park Farms of Millom sold heifer calves to £380 with the majority selling easily in excess of £300.

An entry of stirks sold to £540 for suckler bred British Blue steers from HG Spensley & Son of Barnard Castle. Six month old British Blue bulls achieved £530 from RJ & KR Wilkinson of Levens.

The fortnightly sale of Dairy Cattle saw six active buyers at the ringside plus several leaving empty handed. A top price of £1400 was achieved for a 19 day calved heifer from E & K Bland. A consignment of Ayrshire heifers attracted keen interest selling to £1350, £1300 from H & JE Watson. A total clearance achieved an average of £1295.

Tuesday 28th April North West Auctions held their weekly sale of primestock at J36 on Tuesday where 30 Prime Spring Lambs, 603 Prime Hoggs and 364 Cast Sheep were forward and put before the usual ringside of buyers. Once again, all classes continue to be hard to sell with large amounts of sheep on offer up and down the country.

Prime Lambs topped at 212.8p/kg and to £90 per head for Suffolk x lambs on several occasions. Spring Lambs averaged 202.67p/kg. Hoggs sold to a top price of £90 per head for Texel x from Messrs Stables of Field Broughton with hoggs averaging 161.25p/kg overall.

Once again, a big entry of Cast Sheep were forward with some classes seeing a little more caution on the week especially the plain lean sheep. Trade topped at £148 per head for a pair of Bluefaced Leicester rams from Mr G Rawsthorne of Nether Kellet closely followed at £142 per head for a pair of Bluefaced Leicester rams from RS Harker & Son of Grayrigg.

The weekly sale of Sheep & Lambs saw 425 forward selling to a top price of £240 for Mule Shearlings with Twin Texel Lambs from Messrs Atkinson, Appleby. Other shearlings generally £180-£200. An entry of mainly older sheep saw best doubles £165£170 with singles £100-£118. Hill sheep sold to £140 (£51 per life) for Cheviot ewes with Texel lambs.

Next week’s sale to include first entry of hoggs with lambs at foot.
