PRIME LAMBS

NWA Lancaster Spring Lambs to £196 and 420p/kg.

A sharp start to the week with buyers out in force today, keen to secure all classes and types of lambs at the first sale of the week. Those presenting well fed and bred lambs were duly rewarded with a top price of £196 achieved for Beltex cross from J Twigge, Lindale who sold others at £193 and £190. Texel cross achieved £185 from SH&LE Birkett, Nether Kellet, £183 CD&HL Mason, Caton and £181 D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcli e. Other heavy well finished lambs regularly £165 to £172, with standard weights keenly competed for £148 to £160. Pure hill bred lambs sold to £180 for heavy weight Cheviots from KM&KJ Curwen, Abbeystead with other pens £148 to £158 and standard weight £135 to £145. Once again well bred and hard fed lambs were particularly well sold, generally 360p/kg to 380p/kg, several of the best pens over 400p/kg peaking at 420p/kg for a pen full from J Twigge, Lindale. The best standard weights were generally 340p/kg to 360p/kg, with heavy weights 320p/kg to 335p/kg. Better end light weights were 315p/kg to 330p/kg. Pure hill lambs sold to 323p/kg for Cheviots, with Mules to 305p/kg and Gritstone 300p/kg. An overall average of 330p/kg was achieved for lambs ranging from 33kg to 62kg.

Well fed lambs attracting keenest attention, with another strong entry required for next weeks sale, which includes the Christmas prize show, all show lambs are required for penning by 9am with show commencing at 9.15am.

The cull sheep trade at this popular Monday morning sale continues to provide strong returns for all classes and types with todays sale averaging £143. Medium pure bred ewes sold to £211 from P Metcalfe, Quernmore with other continentals £200 from AJ Cardwell, Pilling and Su olks £192 from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcli e. Other medium continental were generally £170 to £185, with smaller meated sorts £148 to £160. Mules sold to £179 from G Beresford & Son, Kirkby in Furness with a ring full to £167 from C&B Lowther, Over Wyresdale with other heavy Mules were £152 to £160 and the next draw down £138 to £145. Pure hill ewes sold to £169 for Cheviot from G Beresford, Gritstone £142 A&J Smith, Ingleton, Swaledale £129 JW Cornall & Sons, Bleasdale, Dalesbred £107 T&D Wright, Wray and Welsh £98 D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcli e.

PIGS- Pig Prices Proper.

Big show today with 83 head on o er. Quality fat pigs were in demand with top price of £225x2 from C Woodhouse, Gibsons Farm and another at £220. Stores topped at £74 from Hesketh House, Bolton Abbey. Younger weaners were a strong trade, with a large show topping at £46 from Messrs Barrow.

The next sale on Tuesday 9th December at Junction 36 will be the Christmas show and sale, the show consisting of pairs of prime pigs, class one under 90kg and class two over 90kg. Show pigs must be in and weighed by 9.30am. Max entry of two pairs per vendor and must be pre entered before the sale.

PRIME LAMBS

Prime lambs saw another full yard with a fast selling trade for all classes and types for the largest entry of the season. 2262 sold to an SQQ average of 315p/kg with lambs forward today ranging from 31kg to 65kg. Super heavy weight lambs sold to £199 from PK & R Woof with others regularly £182-£195. Heavy weights to £174 from RJ Boyren, Standards £168 LE & A Ridding, and Continental light weights to £138 and Hill bred £124. Mules sold to £163 from JS & JM Wilson. Well bred fed lambs generally 330p/kg350p/kg topping at 365p/kg for Beltex x from LE & A Ridding. Grass fed 310-325p/kg Mules to 319p/kg, Hill bred to 317p/kg with well fed crossbred 300-315p/kg. Light weights and hill bred 265p/kg-280p/kg.

DR & C Galbraith, Grayrigg sold 1 month old British Blues to £750 from MH & AR Robinson, Holmescales close behind at £690. Aberdeen Angus sold to £550 for 5 week old from A Pickthall, New Hutton. 2week-old Limousin to £450 from B & MJ Nelson, Heversham with Hereford to £390 from TK Robinson, Greaves at the same age.

Black and white bulls met a slightly harder trade selling to £390 from MH & AR Robinson, Holmescales with plenty of £200-£300.

Heifer calves to £890, £880 and £850 for British Blues from Bambers Farm, Thurnham with Limousin to £700 from J & O Galbraith, Endmoor. Sweet month old British Blues from DR & C Galbraith, Grayrigg sold to £630 and £600 with A Pickthall, New Hutton next at £590. Aberdeen Angus steers from J Slater, Leyland lead the price list this sale achieving £1660. A pen full of Montbeliardes from S Ashcroft selling at £1480, other steers (9-13 months old) generally £950 to £1200, with a ring full of Black and White eight months to £800.

Heifers sold to £1270 for Longhorn cross from JM Simpson with others £950 to £1100. Younger heifers sold to £940 for five month old Hereford cross from MH&SJ Morris. Several bulls forward selling to £1220 for well reared British Blue cross from F&TE Park, with Aberdeen Angus cross to £1120 from PW Clarke. Dairy bulls sold to £980 for Black and whites from GM Strong. Vendors are politely reminded to pre enter stirks for the catalogue to assist with sale arrangements.

The third sale of suckler calves once again attracted a large crowd of buyers with all classes and types eagerly bid for. Steers sold to £1770 for Simmental x from S & M Carter with Charolais x to £1710 from C Cleasby and Limousin x to £1510 from LM Gleadow. Heifers peaked at £1360 for Limousin x from J & JA Harper and Bulls to £1730 for Limousin x from PW Clarke. A sale of predominantly younger sucklers (4-7mths) saw steers av £1371, Heifers av £1205 and bulls av £1273.

A nice show of 85 OTMs forward today with a straight trade for all. British Blue steers topped the ppkg at 349.5p/kg from JW Robinson, Green Close who sold Aberdeen Angus steers to 339.5p/kg. Cows sold to 344.5pkg from British Blue from PJ & ES Rogerson, Maison Gill who also sold a 11-year-old British Blue cow to 329.5p/kg.

Black and white heifers sold to 294.5p/kg from JM Barton & Son, Lupton with Black & White cows to 274.5p/kg from RR & JA Knowles, Docker.

Top grossing was a Shorthorn steer from RM & JL Whitton, Cartmel which reached £2728.24 or 254.5p.kg with a Shorthorn cast bull from J Mark, Barrow in Furness next at £2963.61 or 259.5p/kg. Cows topped at £2590.64 or 344.5p/kg from PJ & ES Rogerson, Maison Gill with best Black & White cows to £2241.72 from WH Kitching & Son, Heslington and £2084.71 from Jenkin Crag Farms, Kendal.

CALVES

An increased entry of calves at Lancaster today with a trade to match. Bull calves sold to £930 for British Blues from D&J Hay, Cockerham with Aberdeen Angus to £830 twice from IT Richardson, Catforth. Six week old Aberdeen Angus sold to £700 and £690 from Barber Farms, Brock with month old British Blue to £650 from I Slater, Brock. Black and White bulls sold to £550 from IT Richardson, Catforth.

Heifer calves sold to £700 for Charolais from D&J Hay, Cockerham with Aberdeen Angus to £740 twice from JS Towers & H Kent, Dolphinholme. Younger six week rearers to £630 from Wallbank Farms for British Blues with £600 achieved by JP&C Robson, Brock at the same age. A nice run of 30 day olds from RT Halhead, Cockerham sold to £500, with others £490 and £460.

A good show of weaned stirks in today, selling to £1280 for a pair of British Blue bulls from A&B Smith, Chorley with the same price achieved by R Fare, Kirkham for Aberdeen Angus. Heifers sold to £880 from JE&J Pye, Quernmore with this matched by R Fare Kirkham.
