NWA J36 Machinery Sale Wednesday 27th May The monthly machinery sale of farm machinery and equipment saw over 600 lots sold with buyers and sellers in attendance from throughout the northern countries with buyers attending from far a field as Wales and Ireland.

A large selection of farm machinery in the sale was in strong demand especially Seasonal Equipment attracting a large amount of interest with Tedders £3250, Mowers £3200, Haybobs £650. Vehicles sold to £2000 for a L200 Truck and £1200 for a Ford Van. Cattle trailers topped at £1380.

Once again, a large selection of small tools and garden equipment attracted a large crowd and was eagerly bid for with all items reaching there full potential and beyond.

Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 22nd May A good show of Store Cattle this morning were met by the usual contingent of buyers. All classes sold to a sharper trade, topping at £1280 for a Lim Bullock from Cowell & Moore, Woodplumpton. Other Limousins sold to £1260 from PM & ST Entwistle, Abbeystead. Heifers sold to £1240 from JS & KM Wilson & Son, Natland for a 24month British Blue. Native bred stores sold to a £1140 for Angus Bullocks from M & E Forshaw & Son, Longridge and J & R Waller, Killington with Angus Heifers to the same price. Friesian bullocks sold to a top of £1100 again from two different vendors, JM & AG Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe and J Lamb, Old Glasson.

A good show of 97 Cast Cows this morning considering the bank holiday weekend approaching. Best cows sold to a good trade, topping at 189.5ppk for a Lim Heifer from LA Booth, Marthwaite. Black and white cows sold to a top of 137.5ppk from HG Mackreth & Sons, Whittington. Black and White heifers sold to 169.5ppk from TW Nelson & Son, Stainton, with the majority of heifers 137-145ppk. A number of bulls forward this morning along with plain cows were unfortunately penalized due to the bank holiday weekend.

A strong trade again for all 40 Calves and Stirks forward. Rearing calves sold to a top of £375 for a nice 2month old British Blue Bull from Steven Birkett, Nether Kellet. Heifers from the same home sold to £370 for a Charolais. Angus’ to £340 and £300 for a Bull and Heifer respectively from Wallbank Farms.

Black and White calves sold to £245 at 6weeks from WN & D Smith & Sons, Cockerham, others to £185 from JM & MH France, Littledale. Best B&W’s £60£90 to average £94/head. A good run of stirks from Eddy Newsham sold to £620 twice for a Blue bull and heifer at 10months. Charolais heifers from the same home close behind at £610.

Monday 25th May A very mixed entry of Prime Hoggs with better types well meated still good to sell although buyers becoming very selective as many now look to move over to lambs.

A bumper entry of 815 Spring Lambs with two more buyers in the market today following the lamb trade slipping all week last week trade finished averaging 178ppk. The better sorts sold to in excess of 190ppk regularly topping at 200ppk for a smart pen of lambs from David Whitaker of Stirzakers Farm.

A good show of Cast Sheep this morning, with a fast trade through out. Ewes sold to a top of £110 for a big Suffolk from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth with Tups to £121 for a Hampshire Down from GR Bargh & Co, Claughton. Plenty of fat ewes forward selling above and beyond expectations. Horned sheep to £57/head, again from GR Bargh & Co. Big mules a strong trade with the best £96-£109. Overall average of £79/head for all ewes forward.

Spring Breeding Sheep Sale Breeding sheep continue to sell well and meet a good demand considering the current prime sheep prices. A consignment mule shearlings from W Pinder of Longstripes with Texel twins sold to £188 and £185. An entry of Hoggs forward today from Hill farms sold to £165 from RG & H Preece of Thornbush Farm with others £162 with White faced hoggs from W Pinder selling to £158.

J36 Sale Reports Thursday 21st May The weekly sale of calves and sale of stirks had an entry of 51 forward mainly consisting of Black and White bull calves and young beef bred calves. A fast trade throughout the sale with plenty of buyers around the ring looking to purchase calves.

Black and whites topped at £150 for a six week old from Matthew Robinson of Homescales with others selling to £145 from C Birkett and E & SM Halpin.

Other 6 week old plus calves sold over the £100 mark with young rearing calves selling for £60 plus. A young entry of beef calves topped at £305 from ML & SM Dobson of Espford. Angus heifers from GM & DJ Pye of The High Farm sold to £270 with all types selling easily £240 plus. Stirks sold to a top of £500 for a British Blue bull at 8 months old from RJ & KR Wilkinson of High Foulshaw.

Tuesday 26th May North West Auctions held their weekly sale of Primestock at J36, where an entry of 680 New Season Lambs, 189 Prime Hoggs and 191 Cast Sheep were forward.

As more firms make the switch over from hoggs over to lambs, a good show of Spring Lambs was put to an increased ringside of buyers. Despite the trade not being as we would like to see it, lambs were competitively bid for and averaged 174.61p/kg. Topping at 202p/kg for a pen of Texels from G H Bell of Kirkby Lonsdale and a top price of £87.50 from K E Richards & Son of Howgill Prime Hoggs sold to £82.50 from M Barker of Halton. Good well-finished hoggs still selling to a good trade, whilst lean hoggs were harder to place.

NWA Architectural On 6th April this year, the Government introduced a new piece of legislation The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015, known as CDM 2015, this replaces The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007. Whilst the principles of the new legislation are fundamentally similar, there are two differences in application and responsibilities.

CDM Legislation has been in force since 1994 although many people outside of the construction industry are unaware of it.

In essence, it places duties on clients, designers and contractors who are undertaking construction works in respect of health and safety in construction. Construction work under the new legislation covers almost everything from minor roof repairs and repainting through to multi-million pound engineering and building projects. For the first time, it also includes domestic works.

How this affects you is that in obtaining planning consent for a new building and instructing contractors to build it, you have entered into the new CDM 2015 requirements.

Many of your duties will be carried out on your behalf by one of two duty holders, the Principal Designer or the Principal Contractor who must be instructed in writing.

The phrase Principal Designer is likely to cause confusion as many people will assume anybody who designs will automatically become a Principal Designer, this is not the case and a Principal designer has to be formally appointed separately to any other design or professional role.

If your work has started, there is a six month compliance period to put the new requirements in place. If you have completed the project, then the requirements of the old act should be complied with.
