Lancaster Gimmer Lambs Wednesday 18th September Lancaster Auction Marts annual show and sale of Mule and Continental Gimmer Lambs had a catalogued entry of 1500 lambs. The sale, once again, attracted a busy ringside of buyers from Northern Counties and Southern buyers present as well. The pre-sale judging was in the capable hands of Mr Ian Lancaster of Clitheroe, who had a strong entry of a dozen pens of ten forward to cast his eye over. Congratulations go to RH & C Ayrton Ltd, Abbeystead who were awarded the first prize rosette in the pen of tens which later sold to £120. This was closely followed by the second prize pen from AC & K Pye, Abbeystead, selling to £115. The first prize pen of twenty was awarded to W & A Cornall, Barnacre, which sold for £100 with the second prize pen of twenty going to AC & K Pye, selling to £106. A strong interest for running lambs with plenty of pens selling between £60 and £70, with no pens selling under the £60 mark. There was a buoyant trade for the year with all pens being well bid for and a very high clearance rate, there was an overall market average of £79.93 achieved. An entry of Cheviot Mule Gimmer Lambs sold to £94 from P Gardner, Knott End with Continental lambs selling to £86 from JA & VM Lamb, Conder Green.

Show & Sale of Continental Store Cattle Thursday 20th September The prize show for Store Cattle was kindly judged by Mr Michael Cook, Ulverston who awarded the Championship Rosette to a Limousin x steer from TA Chapman & Son which the judge later purchased at £1350. The Reserve Champion Rosette was awarded to a British Blue x heifer from JM & KE Ellis which later sold for £1150. The sale was topped by TW & C Shepherd, Underbarrow selling a Blonde steer at £1355. Well grown steers regularly sold between £1000 and £1200, with all sold averaging £980. Stronger heifers were nicely selling at £880 to £1000, with those cattle showing the effect of the hard summer a more selective trade but all selling to full value. A larger number of native bred cattle were forward today and all easily sold. Hereford steers achieved £1000, Angus x sold to £975 with heifers to £1040 for Hereford x. Yearlings generally were £720 to £850 for steers and heifers between £680 and £750. Several young bulls were forward, selling to £935 for pure Limousins from Messrs Hodgson, with younger sorts £725 to £880.

Lancaster Sale Reports Lancaster Dairy Cattle - Tuesday 18th September 80 ANIMALS SOLD IN THE SEPTEMBER LANCASTER SALE TO A STUNNING TRADE! A fantastic day for the monthly Dairy sale at Lancaster, a great entry concluded in a day brimming with atmosphere as many new purchasers were in attendance as the added numbers were certainly a big attraction; the trade was superb from start to finish with buyers for every commodity on offer, every female that travelled through the ring found a new home! The Show was well supported, with many showing their animals as the quality in the shed was awesome once again. The Judge, Mr Sam Bailey of Stafford, had a tough job on his hands but he did a great job and for his Champion he selected Stardale Uno Vaakje from J Burrow & Son, of Preston, she was bred from this great Vaakje line, milking well yielding 30.kg daily she was first prize in the halter led heifer class and then crowned champion, she sold for £2,100 to A Bargh of Skelton. The Reserve Champion was taken by new consigners EH & R Eccles of Chorley, this second prize halter led heifer then secured the reserve champion ribbon, Denham Hill Prize Guy, April calved on the 10th August and was yielding a credible 34.kg daily she was secured by Bradley Farms Ltd of Preesall, Blackpool for £2,000. Selling for £2,050 was a super milky cow from J M Barton & Son of Lupton, Carnforth, Lupton Hall Whiterock Beth (GP81) yielding 44.kg daily she was eagerly sought after, she was purchased by a Cheshire purchaser. J M Burrow & Son consigned a lovely cow Stradale Bookem Vaakje, this second calved cow yielding 42.kg daily was 3rd prize cow and secured for £2,000 by A & F Bolland & Sons of Lancaster, sharing the same prize from the same vendor was Stardale Brawler Stella (VG85) giving 50kg daily she was secured by A Bargh of Skelton. Many heifers cruised over the £1,900 bracket including Stardale Grafeeti Adeen 3rd, this 3rd prize heifer in the halter led heifer class sold for £1,980 to J E Walton & Sons of Preston. The first prize heifer in the non halter class from H Wright & Son of Helsington, Berryholme Seaver Elope bred from a great line up of cows calved on the 8th August and was yielding 42.kg she was purchased by W & MM Case of Ulverston. Mr J Huddleston of Brookhouse, consigned a super heifer, Ravenscar Mogul Ambrosia, going back to the great EK-Oseeana Ambrosia (EX93-3E). She was yielding 31.kg and purchased by G J Mutton & Sons of Barrow In Furness. A great selection of animals on offer today and all vendors must be congratulated once again for the quality consigned, certainly something for many different buyers from far and wide and great to see, the increased numbers attracted a superb crowd! This resulted in a buzz around the ring. The Bull trade was certainly harder work on the day, judged by Mr Steven Garth, The Champion Bull on Production and Inspection was Kirkwood Enzo, form H & SD Cornthwaite of Kirkland, Garstang. The bull trade was led by a super bull from J Burrow & Son, Stardale Superstella, bred from the great Stella family with longevity and fat and protein in abundance, she was purchased by a local purchaser for £1,820. Other Bulls sold to £1,200 from Drinkall Bros of Over Wyresdale. The younger bulls in the sale were harder to sell today and sold to £1000. Friday 21st September There was a bumper entry of just short of 500 Store Cattle this week at Lancaster, which included the Annual Autumn Show of pens of four bullocks. Our thanks must go to Mr R Owen, for judging today. The first prize was awarded to S & JE Cornthwaite, Brookhouse with Limousins. They were also awarded the 2nd Prize Rosette for Limousins as well. Topping the trade today was the winning pen selling to £1460 with the second prize pen selling to £1380. Also breaking the £1400 barrier was Angus Bullocks from IG Haworth, Pilling selling to £1440 with Charolais from L Goodier & Son, Lea. Thirty one bullocks sold for £1300 or more. The trade today saw well-fleshed and short keep cattle easily sold and in strong demand, with vendors with these types of cattle leaving the sale well pleased. All bullocks forward today averaged £1021. Heifers sold to a top of £1320 for Angus’ from R & DM Rossall & Son, Pilling. Bulls sold to a top of £1230 for British Blues from J & H Bland & Son, Levens. Black and white bullocks sold to a top of £960 from EW & CR Clegg & Son.

It was great to have over 160 Cast Cows at Lancaster today, with there being a very ‘back end’ show of cattle as many people start to off load cows in preparation for lining time. Well-fleshed cows continue to be good to sell, with a large number of leaner cows on the market today leading to an overall slightly less market average of 107p/kg. Lancaster continues to have a good strong ring of buyers for OT M Heifers and Steers with these topping at 184.5p/kg from R Capstick & Son, Ingleton with a British Blue Heifer, others sold between 160p/kg and 170p/kg. Black and whites sold to a top of 159.5p/kg from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe. Beef cows topped 147.5p/kg for British Blue from GR & A Foy, Conder Green. Once again, plenty of cattle grossing over the £1000 mark, topping at £1204 for an Angus Bull from J & M Maudsley & Sons, Endmoor. This was closely followed by Simmental Bulls at £1185 from SI Porter, Flookburgh. Friesian cows topped at £1107 from AW & AM Park & Sons, Ellel.

The weekly sale of Calves at Lancster had a reduced entry forward this week, in which more Beef calves could have easily been sold. Trade sold to a top of £375 and £350 for British Blue Bulls from G & ME Woodhouse & Son, Ellel. Native calves continue to be sticky to sell with young Angus bull calves selling to £190 from JE & J Pye & Son, Quernmore. Black and white bull calves topped at £95 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale.

Monday 24th September The weekly sale of Prime Lambs had a smaller entry this week following on from a tough trade the previous week, but more buyers present this morning ensured a sharper trade with a final average of 165p/kg. The trade topped today at £90 for Texel Lambs from M Joel, Dolphinholme with others to £86 from E Hartley, Hornby. It was great to have numerous pens selling in the early eighties. Suffolk lambs twice topped at £80 from HJ & BE Kelsall, Gressingham and JA & VA Lamb, Conder Green. Lambs sold to a top of 189p/kg for Texels from M Joel, with many pens of smart conformation lambs selling 180p/kg or more. J36 Sale Reports Thursday 20th September Continued from front page The fortnightly sale of Calves and Stirks had an entry of 50 forward this week. A better trade was enjoyed throughout the sale apart from bobby calves, which were much harder to place this week. British Blue bulls sold to a top of £340 and £290 from DR & C Galbraith of Grayrigg with beef bull calves regularly selling in excess of the £250 mark. British Blue heifers regularly sold in excess of the £200 mark topping at £230 from DR & C Galbraith. Rearing black and whites were a strong trade, with calf rearers looking for calves that are in excess of one month old. Black and white calves sold in excess of the £100 mark for the best well-grown types, topping at £135 from JK &A Bowness and Son of Milnthorpe. A handful of stirks on offer meant a brisk trade for well grown stirks, especially with many worried about a possible shortage of fodder over the winter months. Six month old Simmental steers sold to £520 from Kirkby and Longworth of Broughton in Furness with British Blue heifers to £510 and £480 from the same home.

There was an increased entry of Cull Cows forward today as farmers look ahead to housing stock. Well-fleshed beef cows sold to 179p/kg from S Procter with others regularly selling between 140p/kg and 160p/kg. Feeding type cows generally 115p/kg to 130p/kg, dependent on age and condition. Top grossing beef cows were £1216 for a Charolais x from S Procter, others were £800 to £950 for further finishing. Dairy cows sold to 117p/kg from J Handley, mediums were 100p/kg to 110p/kg with the leanest ex-parlour cows less, grossing at £812 from JM Barton & Son. Several cull bulls today sold to 124p/kg and £1273.

Second Sale of Breeding Ewes & Gimmer Shearlings Saturday 22nd September The second sale of Breeding Ewes and Gimmer Shearlings had a catalogue entry of 1500. There was a respectable trade throughout with a high clearance rate, with the vendors leaving satisfied on the year. Best Mule shearlings sold in excess on £120, selling to a top of £130 twice from JS & KM Wilson & Son, Helsington. The trade was topped today by Cheviot Mules again by JS & KM Wilson & Son selling to £135. All Mule shearlings forward averaged just short of £110. Mule ewes sold to a top of £115, twice, from TH Gibson & Son, Kendal with strong Mules regularly selling over the £100 mark and older ewes selling either side of ninety pounds. North West Auctions Tuesday 25th September The fortnightly sale of Prime Pigs had 19 pigs forward for the sale. The trade topped at £142 for Pietrain hogs with gilts to £135 from D Nicholson, Cockermouth who also topped the trade at 129p/kg. Good conformation, well-finished white pigs sold in excess of 110p/kg mark. There was an overall market average of 105p/kg. The next sale of pigs will be on Tuesday 9th October. The weekly sale of Prime Lambs had an entry of 1171 forward selling to an overall market average of 158p/kg. The trade saw well-finished fed lambs eagerly bid for with grass fed and leaner types harder to place, with very little demand for lean tup lambs. The trade topped at £98 for Texel lambs from Underley Estate with Suffolk lambs selling to £97 from J & C Airey, Ulverston. Beltex lambs sold to a top of £92 or 195p/kg from JG Harryman, Hawskhead. Smarter conformation Beltex and Texel lambs sold around the 190p/kg mark. Mule lambs sold to a top of £78.50 from JG Harryman. Vendors are strongly advised to ensure that Lambs are properly finished for the prime ring with leaner types best marketed through the store ring. Heavy, well-fleshed ewes continue to be a reasonable trade, with a shortage of these ewes on the market. Horned ewes topped at £53 with Swaledales from RI Dixon, Low Newton and Rough Fells from John Ridding, Kendal. Meated horned ewes sold around the forty pound mark.
