Lancaster Auction Mart Friday 21st July Early Breeding Sheep Sale A great sale to open the Autumn Sheep Sales at Lancaster. Following the strong Prime Lamb trade through the summer and Cast Ewe prices remaining firm, there was lots of interest in the sale with a packed ring of buyers and onlookers.

Beltex x Charollais Gimmer Shearlings topped the trade at £155 from Peter Anderton of Scorton. Again from the same home, 1 crop Texels sold to £150, middle aged Texel ewes sold to £145 and Mule 1 crops also topping the Mule section sold to £142. A consignment of Texel Gimmer Shearlings from Trevor Smith of Pilling sold to £150. A strong number of Mule Gimmer Shearlings forward sold between £135-£140 regularly.

The ongoing flock dispersal of EE Thornton & Sons of Heaton saw 1-2 crop Lleyn Ewes sell to £148, with 2-3 crop Mule Ewes from the same good home selling to £140 twice. MJ & K Ayrton of Thurnham, with their ongoing flock dispersal sold 2 crop Texel ewes to £135 and 3 Crops sold to £130.

Just a few Tups on offer today saw Aged Texel from N Barker of Burton in Kendal sell to £340 and £300, with Aged Suffolks from the same home sell to £260.

Overall a strong trade was enjoyed with vendors leaving pleased.

Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 21st July Once again a large number of Store Cattle forward at Lancaster with the entry being mixed in the terms of quality. Well fleshed and good quality cattle yielded a premium.

There was plenty of strong, short keep cattle selling between £1200-£1400. The trade topped for Limousin Bullocks at £1490 from J Hesketh of Hutton, closely followed by JA & LR Wilson of Millom selling to £1480. British Blue Bullocks topped at £1480 from GE Turner of Inglewhite.

The Heifer trade toped at £1400 from GE Billington of Garstang with a Charolais. Native Cattle saw Aberdeen Angus Bullocks sell to £1300 from I & ME Askew of New Hutton. Overall Angus Bullocks averaged £1102.

Friesian Bullocks topped at £1140 from SJ & AL Hargreaves of Morecambe with the best well-fleshed selling over £1100, with plenty selling over the £1000 mark.

Overall Bullocks averaged £1007 and Heifers averaged £1015.

A larger entry of Cast Cows forward this week with well fleshed and good quality continuing to be a strong trade, and leaner cows harder to place. Cows sold to an overall market average of 122p/kg. The trade topped at 209p/kg for Limousin Cows from KM & KJ Curwen of Abbeystead with the top price of the day being £1364.39 from JG & PH Thompson of Selside.

Black and White cows sold to a top of £1104 from J & R Waller of Killington, with AT Burrow & Son of Gressingham also achieving £1100.

Best Friesian Cows still selling in the late 130p/kg.

The Calf trade remains very buoyant with all ages and sizes selling to strong demand and a busy ring of buyers.

British Blue Bulls sold to £375 from CR & A Baxter & Son of Middleton with GH Sanderson & Family of Catforth achieving £370. British Blue Heifer calves topped at £365 from CR & A Baxter & Son with all British Blue bulls selling to a market average of £361 and British Blue Heifers averaging £343.

The strong Black and White trade continues in Lancaster with all shapes and sizes eagerly bid for. Six week old calves topped at £155 twice from WN & D Smith & Son of Cockerham, with well grown dark rearing calves selling between £140-£150 regularly. Young dark calves around the age of three weeks sold between £50-£80.

The renowned monthly sale of Stirks will take place next week with a trio of British Blues forward this week selling to £630 and six months old.

Monday 24th July The weekly sale of Prime Lambs saw a similar number of lambs forward to the previous week. As seen at sales over the weekend lamb prices slipped with Lancaster finishing at an overall market average of 186p/kg.

Lambs that were short of finishing were penalised today with well finished Continental lambs selling around the two pound a kilo mark.

Texel Lambs sold to a top of £98 from S Wilson & Son of Scotforth with 45kg smart Texel Lambs from JK & BE Townley of Caton selling to £92 & £90.50. Better bred export type lambs sold between 210 and 220 pence per kilo.

Vendors are strongly urged to ensure that Lambs are properly finished to gain full financial benefits.

There was the largest entry of Cast Sheep forward for some time today at Lancaster with 172 selling to a similar trade. Topping today’s trade at £96 was Texel Ewes from JK & BE Townley of Caton, with plenty pens of ewes selling around the £90 mark.

J36 Sale Reports Thursday 19th July A bumper entry of Calves and Stirks forward this week with 125 going under the gavel. There was a brisk calf trade once again with a majority of younger entry of calves forward today. Good quality beef calves still sold in excess of the £400 selling to a top of £420 for British Blue bulls from V & EJ Chadwick & Son of Sowerby Lodge with British Blue heifers from the same home selling to £410. Also achieving the £400 was three-week-old Limousin bull calves from B & MJ Nelson of Heversham and British blue bulls from JW & D Robinson & Sons of Carnforth. Black and whites sold to a top of £210 from C Gibson and Son of Burneside with other best black and white rearing calves selling in the region of £200.

A larger entry of stirks forward this week met strong demand with stirks vendors urged to enter their cattle to gain full value of them. British blues sold to £550 from A Laidlow of Dufton with Herefords selling to £540 from E & SM Halpin of Barrow in Furness.

A larger entry of Store Cattle than entered with 60 forward selling to a continued strong trade and all eagerly bid for by a busy ring of buyers.

Trade topped at £1070 for Angus bullocks from Sam Hargreaves of Middleton with British blues from the same home selling to £1050.

Heifers sold to £980 from KM & KJ Curwen of Marshaw Farm with 6-month-old Limousin bulls from the same home selling to £940. Store cattle remain a buoyant trade and needed with plenty of grass about and vendors urged to take advantage of this good trade.

There was just a couple of families of Cows and Calves forward today once again well bid for at J36 selling to £1,800 for a five year old cow with a smart Limousin heifer calf at foot from KM & KJ Curwen of Marshaw Farm . Next sale of breeding cattle will be Thursday 3rd August.

The only disappointment of the day was the shortage of Cull Cows forward today with the trade remaining so good vendors should be looking to off load any passengers and take full advantage of the current prices. Cows topped at £1263 for TB restricted cattle from JE Wightman of Lupton showing that selling cows live is the best way and vendors should be encouraged to take full advantage of the service we offer. There was 20% of the cows forward today selling over £1000 mark with an overall market average of 125p/kg.

Tuesday 25th July The fortnightly sale of Prime Pigs had an entry of 28 pigs forward. Topping the day’s trade was PK & R Woof, Storth End Farm selling 111kg pigs to £165 followed by £155 and £150. Top pence per kilo was 211p/kg from NJ Wilkinson, Roosecote Farm.

The next sale of pigs will be held on Tuesday 8th August which include Prime, Store, Weaner and Cast. Please phone the office with entries so we can inform the buyers.

The weekly sale of Prime Lambs saw an entry of 1295 lambs forward but as seen nationally the trade has slipped, with J36 in keeping with other markets on the day. Well fleshed lambs that have been on hoppers and weighing in excess of 40kg were the easiest to sell topping at 217p/kg for four Beltex Lambs from J Allonby & Son, Green Head, Grayrigg. Export lambs still selling excess of 200p/kg.

Top price per head of the day was £96 which was achieved twice, firstly by Suffolk Lambs from J Bargh & Son, Morecambe and secondly by G Denney & Son, Lyth for Beltex Lambs. Texel Lambs sold to a top of £93 from HR & KA Hodgson, Howriggs with others selling to £91 from TH & D Cornthwaite, Low Tarn Green and to £90 from DJ Clarke, Orphan Cragg. Mule Lambs sold to a top of £72.50 from Fishwick Bros, Longsleddale who also sold lambs to £71.

Just short of 500 Cast Sheep went through the ring today with the trade remaining similar and all types of ewes eagerly big for. Topping the trade today was KR & KA Hodgson, Howriggs who sold a Texel Ewe to £108 with other Texels selling to £101 from P & SA Edmondson, Low Barrows Green, and also to £100 from AW Crowe, Ashtree Cottage. Suffolk Ewes sold to a top of £95 from P & SA Edmondson with Mule Ewes selling to £80 from Gibson & Berry, Low Audlands.
