J36 Rural Auction Centre: Second Sale of Breeding Ewes & Shearlings and Autumn Pedigree Sheep Day, Saturday 20th September 2025.

Breeding Ewes

The sale commenced with breeding ewes which once again saw buyers keen to secure proven breeding stock.

Mule ewes sold to a top price of £200 for 3 crops from FI & ME Little with the flock dispersal on behalf of G & C Rylands seeing 1 crops sell to £195 with 2/3 crops £170-£185. 4 crop mules from TMW & H Hodgson sold at £165.

¾ bred ewes sold to £245 for Texels from N Walker with others to £220 from D Mcclure. 1 crop Texel x Mule ewes from G & C Rylands sold to £195 with 2/3 crops sell to £175.

Other notable prices include Su olk x 1 crop ewes to £185. Pure cheviot 4 crop ewes to £155 and Texdale 1 crops to £195.

Gimmer Shearlings

Another successful breeding sale wrapped up today.

Trade for mules was on fine form, coming out at an average of £234. Top of the trade for mules today was achieved by three separate vendors, GE & MG Dixon, Nigel Barker and Trevor Sharp, all reaching £270.

Texel trade reached greater heights, however the trade for pens that weren’t top spec were a little selective. Topping the sale overall was N Walker, Ulverston with a tremendous pen at £350, with a large proportion of better end pens over the £270 mark.

Overall average for all shearlings today was £220.83 with a total of 800 forward.

Next week is the two day sale of draft ewes! Swaledale on the Friday, Rough Fell on the Saturday.

The next sale of breeding sheep is Wednesday 1st October for all classes of breeding sheep to include second show and sale of gimmer lambs and Boys are Back in Town show and sale of 250 breeding rams.

Pedigree Sheep

1400gns tops the Pedigree sale at J36 for Dutch Spotted Gimmer Lamb

Dutch Spotted trade was good from start to finish topping at 1400gns for a gimmer lamb from J Stead, Richmond who also topped the gimmer shearling at 1050gns. Gimmer shearlings also reached 1000gns from S Mitchell, Lazonby with rams to 850gns for a shearling ram from DA Dixon, Grayrigg and for a lamb from J Stead, Richmond. Other notable prices saw 750gns paid for the pick from AP Metcalfe, Crook and 620gns for the best from GM Farms, York.

Beltex sold to 800gns from CM Jennings, Kendal with Badger Face Texel to 700gns from S Coward and 500gns from L & F Brown, Barnard Castle.

The annual show and sale of Charmoise attracted keen interest from commercial farmers looking for rams suitable for ewe lambs. This section topped at 520gns for the overall champion gimmer shearling from D & M & S Prince, Chesterfield with rams to 420gns from IT Jones, Holyhead. Other rams to 400gns x2 from B Mactaggart, Hawick and 300gns from P & C Palfreyman, Bakewell.

PRIME LAMBS

Several consignments of fed lambs forward today, amongst a predominantly grass finished entry of lambs showing the e ects of last weeks weather. Best fed lambs were keenly competed for selling to £169 from S Bosworth and 355p/kg from CD&HL Mason. Other lambs were £150 to £160 and 330p/kg to 350/kg. Grass finished lambs were 300p/kg to 320p/kg and £138 to £148. Hill bred lambs now forward in greater numbers, with Mules to £140, Horned £140, Cheviots £135 and Lonks £127.

A plainer show of ewes today, showing the e ects of the recent weather. Strongest crossbreds sold to £190 from DJ Clarke Farming, with the better of the mediums £150 to £170 and the next draw down £115 to £135. Mules sold to £160 from CD&HL Mason and KA Purtill. Other mediums were £135 to £148 and feeding types £105 to £120. Hill ewes sold to £146 for Lleyns, £146 Lonks, £118 Cheviots, with hard worked horned ewes £65 to £70.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Sale of Pigs, Prime Lambs & Cast Sheep, Tuesday 23rd September 2025.

PIGS

A good show of pigs today with a good trade to match - Prime in particular. Top price today was achieved by J&JR Stott, with two prime hogs at £230, each working out at £2.10 a kilo. Trade for stores was solid also with the majority making around the £160 to £180

mark.

Soi if a pig sale is where you get your kicks, then come pay a visit to Junction 36.

PRIME LAMBS

Prime lamb trade holding up well, as Junction 36 delivers again. Bigger numbers forward this week as more sellers take advantage of continued strong demand for sheep here at Kendal. Todays overall average was 307p/kg, topping at £192 for a Texel from TA Teasdale. Beltex topped at 343.9p/kg from M&S Blease. Charollais sold to 335.7p/kg for a cracking pair from AW&D Brown. J Twigge also had a tremendous run topping at 332.6p/kg for a single Beltex. Well fed handy weight lambs were the easiest to place today, however heavies also sold well with a pair of 53kg Beltex from W Garnett & Son selling for 330.2p/kg or £175. Another rise in numbers with a more weathered show of sheep forward. Best continentals were £200 to £235, topping at £238 for Texels from S Crowe, Stainton. Medium pens were £175 to £200, with the best of the first cross to £215 for a Su olk from RHM&S Boyren, Colton. Mediums were £150 to £180 and better feeding types £115 to £130. Strongest Mules to £164 from RJ&D Holden, with mediums £120 to £145. Pure hill ewes to £148 for Cheviots, Swaledales £116, Whitefaced Woodlands £112, Rough Fells £110 and Herdwick £92. Cull rams in abundance selling to £228, with mediums continentals generally £170 to £200 and hill rams £110 to £130.

Trade once again a flyer for the biggest of the season so far. The trade topped at £150 for a pen of Texel cross from High Wardses Farm, Cautley with GM Strong, Penrith selling Blue Texels to £140. Su olks sold to £136 from J&R Bell, Crook with all forward strong lambs the top side of £125. Longer keep lambs sold to £133 for Beltex from BR Lawson, Richmond with Mule topping at £114 from GM Strong, Penrith and D Carradice, Kendal. Hill bred lambs to £126 for Cheviots from SI Porter, Grange Over Sands with Rough Fells to £105 from H Stables, Kendal. Texels to £150 and averaged £112.21.

Su olks to £136 and averaged £111.84. Mules to £114 and averaged £97.67.

CALVES

A rise in numbers with all calves selling to their full value, with new customers once again in attendance. Month old British Blues cross bull calves sold to £680, with other rearing bulls £600 to £670 and the younger end £500 to £580. Heifers sold to £540 for young British Blue cross, with others generally £420 to £500. Dairy bulls sold to £255 for black and whites with other mediums £180 to £230 and younger sorts £120 to £175. Native bulls sold to £470 for a young Hereford cross, with Aberdeen Angus cross to £410.

A full row of weaned calves saw British Blue cross bulls at five months old to £1040, with Aberdeen Angus cross bulls (six months) to £970. Steers peaked at £995 for six month old Limousin cross, with younger British Blue cross £890. Heifers sold to £740 for six month old Aberdeen Angus cross, with four month old Limousin cross £700.

Plenty of competition ringside which saw steers sell to £2300 for Aberdeen Angus cross, with Limousin cross £2450, British Blue cross £2280 and Charolais cross £2250. Stronger steers regularly £2200 to £2400, with medium feeding types £1850 to £2100.Dairy steers to £2150 for Fleckvieh and £1900 for Holstein Friesian.

Heifers sold to £2300 for Aberdeen Angus cross, British Blue cross sold to £2220 and Hereford cross £2120. Other stronger end were £1980 to £2100, with mediums £1750 to £1950. The sale concluded with farmer stirks which saw Aberdeen Angus cross steers sell to £1250 and Black and Whites £1180 (12-14 months), with others regularly £920 to £1100. British Blue cross heifers sold to £880.

All cows today averaged 264p/kg and £1622, with prices achieved well ahead of other outlets. Beef cows sold to 344p/kg and £2628 with other better end 310p/kg to 330p/kg and £2100 to £2400, with feeding types 280p/kg to 315p/kg. Dairy cows sold to 289p/kg and £2346 with mediums 250p/kg to 270p/kg and £1600 to £1800. Stock bulls sold to 344p/kg for a British Blue and £2264 for an Aberdeen Angus. OTM beef heifers sold to 384p/kg and £2499, with dairies to 344p/kg and £2283. Beef steers sold to 364p/kg and £2300.
