J36 Lakeland Fair - Saturday 21st October The annual ‘Lakeland Fair’ end of season sale of all classes of breeding sheep, including breeding ewes, gimmer shearlings, gimmer lambs and terminal sire breeding rams, was held at J36 Rural Auction Centre on Saturday 21st October. The sale also included the Annual Show and Sale of Swaledale rams.

The largest entry of breeding sheep was seen at this sale, with an impressive catalogued entry of 2150 females. The trade was slightly slow as to be expected, and in keeping with other auction markets later sales, and with the wet Autumn, many purchasers were not looking to buy anymore. As usual, good quality livestock was in strong demand and eagerly bid for with aged and second quality sheep harder to place. The females topped at £140 for a Suffolk Gimmer Lamb from RI Dixon, Low Newton. Gimmer Shearlings sold to £120 for nine Mules from SM Higginson, Summer Close Farm and Ewes sold to £94 for a Cheviot Mule from D Cousins, High Bridgestones.

The Annual Show and Sale of Swaledale breeding rams, had the best entry of rams forward for the sale in terms of quality and the largest entry, gaining additional interest from fresh buyers and sellers. The pre-sale show was judged by Robert Walker of Dunsop Bridge, who we thank for his time and expertise. The Champion rosette was awarded to a Shearling from JS & S Atkinson of Sykes Farm, Scorton with reserve Champion being awarded to from RA Lancaster of 5 Green Cottages. The Swaledale shearling rams topped at £220 for the champion from JS & S Atkinson with plenty of shearling rams selling in and around the £200 mark. The majority of Swaledale rams forward finding new homes.

There was a strong trade for all breeds of rams, with tupping time creeping ever closer meaning rams were in demand. Rough Fell rams topped at £240 from TD, ME & GE Todd of Holme Farm, Cheviot rams to £380 from KO Stones of Nun Cote Farm, who also sold Suffolk x Texels to £620 and Texels to £520, plenty of good quality terminal sire rams selling in excess of £400.

Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 20th October The weekly sale of Store Cattle at Lancaster saw another catalogued entry of over 400. This week’s trade saw meaty and quality type cattle sell to a sharper trade with all other cattle harder to place. Topping today’s sale at £1400 was MS Dugdale & Son of Tewitfield for a pair of Limousin Bullocks.

Native Cattle saw Hereford Bullocks sell to £1290 from A & E Clarkson and Son Ltd of Thurnham with Aberdeen Angus Bullocks sold to £1260 from JD & GM Bracken of Garstang. Store Heifers sold to £1150 for a pair of Aberdeen Angus Heifers, again, from JD & GM Bracken.

Vendors are advised that the gates are open from 7am and requested to get cattle forward as early as possible with fully completed paperwork to avoid queues.

A larger entry of Cast Cows forward this week with an entry of 124 forward. This week saw a mixed show of cows with Continental cows selling to a sharper trade and all others selling to a similar trade to the previous week. An overall market average of 111.49p/kg was achieved.

Best Beef Cows sold to 171.5p/kg from T Atkinson of Ulverston with the top price per head from JE & AC Clarke & Son of Melling selling a British Blue Cow to £1124.48.

OTM Heifers sold to 191.5p/kg from P & A Bell of Preston for an Aberdeen Angus.

A few Cast Bulls in the market today saw an Aberdeen Angus from JH Atkinson & Partners of Selside sell to 139.5p/kg, selling to the top price per head was SW & K Metcalfe, again, with an Aberdeen Angus selling to £1315.61 Cast Cow Top Prices: CAST COWS – BLONDE D’AQUITAINE: 171.5 Meadow View. The weekly sale of Calves saw a smaller entry forward this week. Good quality beef calves continue to be good to sell with young and plainer types harder to place.

Leading today’s Calf trade was a British Blue Bull Calf from Cornthwaite Moors Ltd of Poulton Le Fylde selling to £345. Native Calves continue to sell well with Aberdeen Angus Bull Calves, again, from Cornthwaite Moors Ltd sell to £280. Hereford Heifer Calves sold to £310 from J & G Thornley of Poulton Le Fylde. A run of British Blue Heifer Calves from Cornthwaite Moors sold to £290 with others at £260.

Best types of rearing calves were noticeably up on the week and desperately required next week to meet demand for new buyers looking to purchase fit rearing calves between 3 and 6 weeks old. Friesian Bull Calves sold to £160 from J Bargh & Son of Heaton with Oxcliffe with others selling to £152 from Wallbank Farms of Over Wyresdale.

Just a dozen Stirks in today sold well considering the forage situation. Six month old Aberdeen Angus Steers sold to £450 from PS & H Eckersley of Preston.

Monday 23rd October There was a smaller entry of Prime Lambs forward this week in which more could have easily been sold to the advantage of the vendor, with five active buyers in the market all looking to purchase lambs. The lambs within specification weighing between 40kg and 50kg were very easily sold and more could have been sold, with an overall average for this weight bracket of 171p/kg achieved. There were plenty of pens of lambs selling in the seventies with better lambs selling in excess of £80 topping at £85 from MJ & K Ayrton of Bambers Farm. Better conformation lambs sold over 180p/kg topping at 188p/kg from Ian Richardson of Goosnargh. Lambs under 40kg were harder to place with a limited prime market for them.

There was more cast ewes in the market today consisting of mainly lean hill ewes. There is a large number of ewes in markets at the moment making leaner hill ewes harder to place and with the wet and trashy weather, less people in the market looking for feeding ewes at this time.

J36 Sale Reports Ambleside Store Lambs - Thursday 19th October The Ambleside Store Lamb Sale this year at Junction 36 saw the largest show of the season forward, with a better trade than originally anticipated.

The sale topped at £71.00 for a pen of Texel Lambs forward from Messrs Hodgson of High Borrans Farm, with other pens selling from the same home achieving £68 per head. A fantastic run of 623 lambs forward from the Hodgson Family of High Borrans and Rydal saw their Texel Lambs average £64.84 and Beltex Lambs sell to £64.50 to average £57.59.

The show classes put before the judge, Mr George Harryman of Hawkshead saw strong pens of hill lambs forward. The Best Pen of 20 Mule Lambs was awarded to Messrs Hodgson, whose lambs went on to sell for £65.00 per head. The Cheviot Class first prize ticket being awarded to MB & JE Meredith of High Arnside Farm and the Horned Class being won by a pen of 20 Swaledale Lambs forward from FRT Cavendish of Holker Estate.

Strong Mule Lambs met keen buyer demand, with the breed topping at £66.50 for a pen from K Gregory of Croziers Croft followed by a pen from Messrs Watson & Markendale at £65.50. Mule Lambs average £50.32. Cheviot Lambs sold to £63.00 from JR Park of Black Syke, with others to £60.50 for a pen from S Crompton of Greenbank Farm. The majority of Cheviot Lambs forward for sale, being more suitable for long term keep, reflecting in a breed average of £45.05. Short term keep Continental Lambs meeting the strongest trade of the day, with Texel Lambs selling to £71, to average £54.83; Beltex Lambs to £68.00, to average £56.21 and Suffolk Lambs to £67.50 to average £56.51.

Horned Lambs harder to place, with the fat market at the moment difficult to predict. Scotch Blackface achieving top price for all horned lambs forward at £49.00 from Messrs Watson & Markendale of Millom.

A very respectful average achieved of £51.34 for a complete clearance for all 3400 lambs forward for sale.

Tuesday 24th October The weekly sale of Prime Lambs saw an increased entry forward for the sale with 1500 selling to an overall market average of 164p/kg, very similar to last week’s trade. Beltex export lambs continue to meet strong demand at J36 with all Beltex lambs forward selling to average 214p/kg. Topping the day’s trade were Beltex Lambs at 257p/kg from JG Harryman of The Galleon and 250p/kg from WS Burrow & Son of Gibraltar, who also sold the top price lambs per head at £115 closely followed by JG Harryman at £108. Plenty of good quality lambs selling in the nineties and heavy weights selling in the region of £90 for the best conformation lambs, plainer types selling in the early eighties.

There was a larger show of hill bred, Mule and horned lambs on offer today. Mules sold to a top of £79.50 from Ian Dixon of Low Newton.

Well fleshed ewes continue to be good to sell with best continental and horned ewes sharper on the week. Today’s top price achieved by a pen of Texel ewes from CC&HM Roberts of Bybeck selling to £97. Mule ewes selling to £71 from F&SA Edmondson of Nether Houses.
