NWA J36 Show & Sale of In-Lamb Suffolk Females The Annual show and sale of Suffolk in-lamb ewes, shearlings and gimmer lambs had a strong line-up of sheep put before the evening’s judge, Graham Denby of Longtown. In the pre-sale show, the first prize flock ewe from TA Blair, Thornfleet Suffolks, was awarded the Champion Rosette. This Cairness Last Flight sired ewe, sold in-lamb with Twins to Forkins Shalaa later sold for 420gns to Messers Brooke of Leyburn. The Reserve Champion rosette was awarded to James & Caroline Airey with the first prize shearling. This flashy shearling, sired by Strathisla Thunderball and scanned carrying twins by Lakeview Major General, realised the evening’s top price of 450gns. Gimmer lambs sold to a top of 300gns twice, firstly from Steven Bolland of Wharfe Suffolks with his first prize gimmer lamb, followed by TA Blair with his second place gimmer lamb. Gimmer lambs averaged 242gns with all being sold. A nice crowd of active bidders and onlookers gathered ringside, resulting in a fast trade, with all buyers leaving suited with the prices achieved. In total, seven sheep sold in advance of 400gns, with buyers keen to purchase well bred, showy ewes. Ewes and shearlings sold to a respectable average of 302gns. William Alexander, Auctioneer, commented on the sale "Suffolk sheep continued to sell well at J36, buyers were present for all classes. A desire for well bred, flashy sheep ensured best pedigrees sold to a premium" An entry of 22 Pedigree Charollais from several noted local breeders sold to keen interest from an active ringside of buyers all keep to secure stock. The first vendor Robert Towers of Camp House, Farleton sold the best of his consignment at 320gns for a Charollais ewe inlamb to a Pedigree Beltex with others inlamb to a pedigree Charollais selling for 300gns. Older Charollais ewes carrying Beltex triplets sold at 250gns, this price was reached for 3crop ewes carrying Charollais twins. The next vendor was John Stott Jnr, Kendal with his annual production sale which attracted keen interest from new and returning customers. Bidding reached 300gns on 4 occasions for shearlings carrying twins with others at 280gns. The final vendor M Williams, Rhuddlan sold shearlings carrying triplets at 230gns and others with singles 200gns. The next multi breed sale of individual in-lamb sheep is Thursday 7th January 2016.
