J36 Store Lambs Thursday 19th November 2020 The fortnightly sale of Store Lambs at J36 had an entry of 3840 selling to a continued strong trade for all sizes. Short term lambs would be sharper on the fortnight as seen in the Prime market. Leading the way were Beltex gimmer lambs from CM Jennings, Selside which sold to £145 going on for breeding stock. Other Beltex lambs sold to £93.50 from R & E Ladds, Kendal.

Texel lambs peaked twice at £89 from KJ Knight, Ulverston and R & E Ladds again, with numerous pens of strong Texel lambs selling over the £80 mark. Suffolk lambs sold to £83.50 from R & BJ Cleasby, Broughton in Furness. Plenty of pens of short keep Continental lambs sold in to the mid-80s with medium keep Continental lambs regularly selling into the 70s. Mules sold to a top of £83 from Clarke & Johnson, Windermere with other Mules to £81 from MW & WD Burton, Barnard Castle.

A much bigger show of hill lambs forward today, with all eagerly bid for, with Cheviots leading the way at £80.50 from AW Irvine, Ambleside and plenty of Cheviot lambs in the high 70s. Horned lambs peaked at £77.50 for Jacobs from JF Batty, Coniston with Swaledales to £71 from E Parker, Crag Bank with Rough Fells to £62.50 from M & G German, Middleton with others to £62 from B Dickinson & Co, Kentmere.

Lancaster Sale Reports Lancaster Calves, OTM & Store Cattle Friday 20th November 2020 The Lancaster weekly sale of Calves and Weanlings had an improved entry of 79 forward selling to a continued strong trade with a younger entry of calves. The consignment of Continental heifer calves led the way today from WG Farms, Cockerham selling Charolais to £375 with British Blues to £370. Bull calves peaked at £355 for Limousins from JM & MH France & Son, Littledale.

Bull calves from Wannops Farm, Heaton with Oxcliffe twice sold to £350 twice for Angus and Charolais followed by £345 for Angus Bull calves from A Pickthall, New Hutton. Plenty of beef bulls and stronger beef heifers were selling over the three hundred mark. Native heifers were a sharper trade today selling Angus heifer calves to £270 from Wannops Farm, Heaton with Oxcliffe and £260 from A Pickthall, New Hutton. Black and white weanlings sold to £285 and £210 from RT Halhead, Cockerham. Younger black and white rearing calves sold to £85 from Tomlinson Bilsbrow Ltd.

The Lancaster Store sale boosted a larger entry this week of 286. Forward, short-keep Store Cattle continue to be a very good trade with more long term cattle forward in the market today. These continue to look well sold but slightly easier trade with many purchasers cautious of the expensive winter ahead, but prices are still more than a month ago.

Best cattle continue to sell over £1400 topping at £1440 for a Charolais bullock from Cowell and Moore, Woodplumpton. The consignment from DE & SM Moorhouse, Natland saw Charolais bullocks to £1430 and British Blues to £1410. Native bred cattle continue to meet plenty of demand with Angus bullocks selling to £1360 and £1340 from L Parson and Sons, Levens with Hereford bullocks to the same price from J Prest and Son, Bay Horse, with plenty of bullocks selling in excess of £1200. All bullocks forward averaged £1,033. Heifers sold to a top of £1330 from M Shepherd & Son, Pilling with British Blues whom sold others to £1210.

Dairy bred stores saw black and white heifers selling to £1220 from MD Shorrock, Goosnargh with black and white bullocks selling to £1210 from L Parsons and Sons, Levens.

Lancaster Auction continues to boast one of the best cast rings in the local area with a good number of 133 forward selling to the usual buyers plus new buyers ringside. The overall market average was 123p/kg.

Beef cows from Ballacutchel Farms, Isle of Man led the way selling to 209.5p/kg whom sold Limousin bulls to 191.5p/kg. The bulls sold to a top of £1590 and £1574. Angus cast steers sold to £1292 from PR Holt, Thornton Cleveleys. OTM dairy heifers regularly sold between 160p/170p/kg selling to a top of £1122 from W & G Cornthwaite & Son, Claughton on Brock, £1105 from J & O Galbraith, Son, Endmoor and £1102 H Wright & Son, Kendal.

Beef cows sold to a top of £1137 for South Devons and £1120 for Shorthorns from JE & AC Clarke & Son, Melling. The very best dairy cows sold in excess of 125p/kg with plenty of cows selling around the 120p/kg mark.

Lancaster Prime Sheep & Store Lambs Monday 23rd November 2020 Lancaster had an increased entry of 584 forward this week selling to an improved trade, with Lancaster falling in line with other markets at the end of the previous week. An overall market average of 203p/kg was achieved (SQQ average of 208p/kg).

Well fleshed handy weight lambs continue to be the best to sell, heavy weight lambs saw a sharper trade then the previous week. The consignment from Andrew Butler, Hambleton led the way, selling Texel lambs to £108 weighing 52kg, lambs from the same home selling to £101. Other Texel lambs sold to £104 from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof weighing 47kg. Beltex lambs sold to a top of £101 or 259p/kg from TM Townley, Over Wyresdale. The consignment of Dutch Texel lambs from GR & A Foy and Son, Conder Green sold to a top of £101 or 245p/kg.

Upland lambs saw mules sell to a top of £90.50 from A & J Rhodes, Ellel weighing 47kg, with other mules to £88.50 weighing 44kg from T Ayrton and Son, Over Wyresdale. All mule lambs forward averaged 195p/kg.

Lancaster Reports A slightly smaller entry of Cast Sheep, of which more are required and this week saw a noticeably sharper trade. Continental ewes sold to £88 from PG Thornton, Scorton with others to £82 from David Dickinson, Thurnham. Mule ewes sold to £74 from PG Thornton, Scorton with other strong mules selling into the seventies.

Lancaster’s fortnightly sale of Store Lambs saw the majority of forward being strong short term keep lambs, which met plenty of demand selling to an overall market average of £70.18. The trade topped at £85 from PD Anderton, Scorton with Texel lambs. The consignment from PG Thornton, Scorton sold Texel’s to £85 and Suffolk’s to £79.50 and £79. Other Texel lambs sold to £76 from David Dickinson, Thurnham.

J36 Sale Reports Pigs, Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep Tuesday 24th November 2020 The fortnightly sale of Pigs at NWA J36 saw one of the largest entries for several months with 102 forward, both new vendors and purchasers were in attendance at this popular sale. North West Auctions are pleased to conduct the regular fortnightly sales for all classes of pigs and always welcome new customers.

Prime pigs were out in large numbers today with buyers looking to stock up ahead of the Christmas rush. Prime gilts sold to a top price of £120 for a pen of 4 well finished Large Whites from M Navesey, Darwen with Duroc X selling to £110 from DC Morley, Laurencekirk. Lighter weight gilts sold to £90, again for large whites from M Trotter, Wigton. The 20 gilts forwards averaged £95 & 92ppkg.

Prime Boars sold to a top price of £88 for a Duroc x from DC Morley, Laurencekirk. Traditional breeds selling to £85 for GOS x from R Nettleton, Penrith who also sold others at £80. Large Whites from AP Smith, Brookhouse sold to £81. The 54 boars forward averaged £74 & 78ppkg.

Just a small entry of prime hogs from M Navesey, Darwen sold to £92 and 92ppkg for Large White x.

Cull sows and mature pigs saw a top price of £75 achieved for a Pietrain Gilt from M Navesey, Darwen. Sows selling to £72 from AP Smith, Brookhouse and 59ppkg from W Stamper, Chipping. Cull Boars sold to £60 from M Bennett, Penrith & 23ppkg from GW Taylor, Crook.

The first offering of weaner pigs seen for several sales attracted keen interest selling to £40 for GOS from C Smettem-Minson, Kirkby Stephen. Store pigs sold to £50 for Large White x gilts and boars from J Robertson & Son, West Lothian.

The next sale of Prime Pigs is Tuesday 8th December to include the Christmas Prize Show for the Best Pair of Prime Pigs. Please advise of entries to the office to assist with advertising and contacting buyers.

The weekly sale of Prime Lambs at J36 had an increased entry of 1519 forward and more could have easily been sold. An overall market average of 211p/kg with a SQQ average 218p/kg was achieved. The trade for light and handy weight lambs was seen to be firmer than the previous week, with well finished lambs in the region of 210-225p/kg, heavy weight lambs slightly easier than the previous week selling just shy of 200p/kg.

Leading the way this week was heavy weight Texel lambs from E Dodgson, Kendal selling to £118 and £117 and others selling to £114 from JB Airey, Kendal. Suffolk lambs sold to a top of £112.50 from J Bargh and Son, Heaton with Oxcliffe followed by others to £111 from MW & M Hodgson, Cartmel Fell. Plenty of heavier weighted lambs selling in excess of the £100 mark.

Beltex and better conformation lambs in strong demand and eagerly bid for, regularly selling around the 240p/kg mark and topping at 261p/ kg and 250p/kg from AR & BJ Thompson, Selside with others to 250p/kg from WS Burrow and Sons, Silverdale. Beltex lambs sold to a top price per head of £110 from AR & BJ Thompson, Selside with others from J Twigge, Lindale selling to £107 twice and £106 three times.

A larger entry of upland lambs once again which were well bid for selling to a strong trade. Mule lambs sold to a top of £95 for 49kg from T & CM Kelsall and Sons, Chipping followed by £94.50 for 46kg lambs from EW & JR Parkinson, Dunsop Bridge. Masham lambs sold to £94 from WI & AM Atkinson and Son, Bleasdale. Plenty more pens of mule lambs selling in excess of the ninety-pound mark. All mules forward averaged 208p/kg. Horned lambs topped at £85.50 for Rough Fells from S Crawford, Staveley. Light weight, well fleshed horned lambs a strong trade with 33kg swales selling to £72.50 (219p/kg) from Fishwick Bros, Longsleddale.

J36 Reports An increased entry of 440 Cast Ewes forward, with all selling to a sharper trade! Big heavy Texel ewes were in demand peaking at £129 from E Dodgson, Kendal with others from the same good home selling to £118 and several over the £110 mark. Suffolk ewes topped at £111 from DM & D Cook, Arrad Foot with all Suffolk ewes forward averaging £97. BFL ewes from RHM & S Boyren, Colton sold to £107. A larger show of Mule ewes forward with the trade heating up on them. Mules sold to a top of £90, again from DM & D Cook, with all mule forward averaging £71. Masham ewes sold to £81 from EJ Hodgson & Son, Lambrigg. A good show of hill bred ewes forward, all well bid for.

Cheviot ewes led the way again with a top of £90 from JE Swan, Cartmel Fell with others to £79 from S Crawford, Staveley. A run of Gritstone ewes from AT Threlkeld, Grizebeck sold to £76. Big strong Rough Fell ewes selling over the £70 mark, with a top of £75 from S & A Bland, Tebay. Swaledale ewes continue to sell to a fast trade at J36, WI & AM Atkinson, Bleasdale topping this breed at £62 with others selling to £58, again from S & A Bland. JA Bennett, Longsleddale sold strong Dalesbred ewes to £60. A pen full of well finished Herdwick ewes from SW & A Hoggarth, Seathwaite sold to £51.
