NWA J36 - New Year Show & Sale of Store Cattle Thursday 19th January The New Year show and sale of Store Cattle at J36 saw a fantastic entry of 201 go under the hammer this morning. A good number of cattle in each class were put before the Judge Mr JA Gardner of Treales and we would like to thank him for his time and expertise judging today’s show. He awarded the 1st prize rosette in the Bullock class to an outstanding 12 month old British Blue cross from JG & PH Thompson, Poppy Farm, Selside which was also awarded the overall Champion rosette and was presented the Janet Gorst Perpetual Challenge Trophy by Joe Gorst.

The champion Bullock also topped the day’s trade selling to £1300. Taking the Reserve Champion rosette was an outstanding 18 month old British Blue Heifer from RT & J Gorst, The Coach House, Killington which was first place in the Heifer class later selling for £1230. Compliments must go to all vendors for the high standard of cattle put before our Judge.

A noticeable good trade for strong bulling Heifers was seen today with a Limousin from local regular vendor JA Chapman, Kendal topping at £1280. Store cattle seeing the best trade for many months with all vendors leaving well satisfied with the day’s trade.

The next Store Cattle sale will be held on Thursday 2nd February, please advise the office of entries for the catalogue by Wednesday 25th January.

Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 20th January The weekly sale of Calves had an entry of 43 forward which saw a top price of the day of £365, for a cracking British Blue Heifer which was consigned by MJ Fell Ltd, Chapel House and their Bull realised £330. RT Halhead, Norbreck Farm had the top price for bulls with a superb British Blue which sold for £360. Montbeliarde bull calves were selling to £320 and £305 from JK and BJ Birkett and Son Ltd, White Lund Farm.

Native bull calves sold to £300 for an Aberdeen Angus which was consigned by H & VE Jolly, Great Eccleston Hall, with their Aberdeen Angus Heifer peaking at £170.

Topping the Black and White market was £86 for a bull from the Drinkall Bros, Catshaw Hall Farm, followed by £74 and £60 with the black and white trade continuing at recent rates.

We had a good ringside of buyers today for the continental calves with bidders keen to buy quality animals.

There was 16 Stirks forward for the sale today topping the trade was PS & H Eckersley, High Budurst Farm, for an Aberdeen Angus Bullock which sold for £500 with their British Blue Bullocks peaking at £485 and their pair of British Blue Heifers sold to £445. Friesian Bull Stirks sold for £130 from WA Ward & Son, Anciffe Hall Farm and £105 and £95 respectively.

A fantastic entry of 154 Cast Cattle forward this week sold to the same good trade seen for the last few weeks. Topping the trade today was a 690kg Friesian Cow selling to £1135 from J & G Thornley, Derby Lodge Farm. The top price per kilo went to an Aberdeen Angus Cow for 164.5p/kg from Ballacutchel Farms Ltd, Mount Murray. Heifers sold to a top of 154.5p/kg this was a Friesian from GB & EA Metcalfe, Bullocks sold to 144.5p/kg from I Atkinson & Son, Holme House Farm for a Friesian and Bulls also sold to 144.5p/kg for a Charolais from JF & AW Sutton, Nether House Farm.

An overall market average of 110p/kg for all Cast Cattle forward was achieved.

It was good to see a larger entry of Store Cattle forward this week at Lancaster with 324 going under the hammer to a usual ringside of buyers. A larger show of Friesian types were forward today with a strong trade for short term cattle. Topping the market, again, this week was DE & SM Moorhouse, High House Farm, with a Limousin Bullock selling to £1460 followed by another Limousin Bullock selling to £1430 from the same vendor. Heifers topped at £1240 for a single Aberdeen Angus from JD & GM Bracken, Greenlands Farm. Friesian Bullocks saw a high of £1100 from KG Wilkinson, North Dene.

Monday 23rd January An entry of over 400 Prime Hoggs at Lancaster sold to a market average of 155p/kg. Prime hoggs sold to a top of £86 from GR & RA Surtees of Rowallen House. Commercial Continental and Texel Hoggs were selling in the region of thirty pound above their weight. Heavy Hoggs were harder to place with many buyers having difficulties selling the larger heavy Hoggs. Light handy weight Hoggs around the 36kg mark were eagerly bid for and were in the strongest demand with a shortage of this type of Hogg available on the market.

A sharp Cast Ewe trade was enjoyed with buyers keen to purchase sheep, a different story to the prime hoggs. All classes of ewes selling a few pounds up than seen over previous weeks. The trade topped at £95 for cast continental tups from J Lamb of Old Glasson.

J36 Sale Reports Thursday 19th January - Continued from front Page The weekly sale of Calves saw a good entry of 42 Calves forward for sale. Topping the calf trade today was a British Blue Bull, which was consigned by JW & TE Sharp, Flodder Hall which sold for £420. British Blue Heifers had a top price of £335 from DR & C Galbraith, Sunny Bank. Limousin bull calves peaked at £345 from R & J Dodgson, Cracalt Farm and their heifer calves sold to £340.

Hereford bull calves sold to a top of £205, twice, from Messrs Robinson, Strickley and R & JE Wharton & Son, Mount Pleasant. Friesian bull calves from Messrs Sowerby, Townhead Farm realised £85 and Shorthorn bull calves sold to £55 from Messrs Robinson, Strickley.

JM Simpson from Underbarrow had the top price in the Stirk ring with his Limousin Bull selling for £455 and £410 for his Aberdeen Angus bull. British Blue Bull stirks from RJ & KR Wilkinson, High Foulshaw Farm, realised £355 and £320, with his Stabilisers to £280.

We had a good ringside of buyers today, with Continental types selling to a strong demand, and the black and whites selling to recent rates.

Tuesday 24th January The fortnightly sale of Prime Pigs at J36 had an entry of 27 forward this week. The sale topped at £117 for 84kg prime pigs or 140p/kg from O’Rourke Farms of Dalbeattie. Plenty of prime pigs sold in the region of 100p/kg. The next sale of pigs will be held on Tuesday 14th February.

An entry of 975 Prime Hoggs sold to a top price of £85 for a pen of cracking Beltex Hoggs, consigned by G R & A Foy, Parkside Farm. Top price per kilo was 202.8p/kg for 36kg Beltex Hoggs from P & TL Edmondson Ltd, Low Hall Farm. Beltex x Hoggs from W & J Parkinson, Cross House Farm peaked at 200p/kg and Texel Hoggs consigned by TS & SM Park, Millom Castle realised £82.50 for 43kg.

Suffolk Hoggs sold away to £74 from BR Butterfield & Son, Moss House Farm, with Charollais selling to £71 from TE, JS & SA Carruthers, Red Scar, and also from RR & JA Knowles, Myers Farm.

Hill breeds sold to a top of £68.50 for a pen of Mules consigned by BR Butterfield & Son, Moss House Farm, Rough Fell Hoggs sold to £65 from AJ & CM Harrison, Boundary Beck, P Prickett, Hutton Roof had Cheviots sell to £65, Herdwicks from by A & L Birkett, High Birk Howe Farm realised £63, Bluefaced Leicester Hoggs reached a top of £63.50 from AJ & CM Harrison, Boundary Beck and Swales from TLB & J Knowles, High Borrowbridge sold to £60.

There was a very mixed show of Hoggs forward today, nice shapely types with the right weights sold away to a firm demand with heavier Hoggs harder to cash.

There was an entry 300 Cast Sheep forward this week at J36. In general a plainer, leaner entry of cast sheep with many looking very wintered today. Cast rams sold to a top of £85 from A Holden of Sandy Gap with plenty of ewes selling in the region of eighty pound. Strong mule ewes sold to a top of £74 from RR & JA Knowles of Myers with other pens of stronger mule ewes selling mid to late sixties. Farmer Flood Meeting For Farmers On Monday 23rd January 2017 a meeting was held at J36 Rural Auction centre on behalf of the Farmers Flood Group.

A very productive meeting was had, with some very good issues raised and discussed. The aims of the group are to gather information from people who have been affected by the floods, and are requesting any information about damage caused so that a portfolio can be put together.

Helpful Reminders Sheep Annual Inventory Don’t forget that you should complete and return your form with all your sheep Numbers as of the 1st December. You must also note the numbers in your flock register in case of inspection by RPA.

Temporary Holding Numbers and links The new initiative from DEFRA is causing a lot of confusion and headaches, particularly at BCMS links are no longer being renewed.

Agricultural Waste Exemptions Many of these will have expired in the last few months and although we did lots of applications three years ago, we have done a few renewals. If you have renewed your own exemptions that is good, but if not please contact us and we will help.

Basic Payment Scheme 2016 Although there are still clients who have not been paid fully in 2015, the payment window for 2016 opens on the 1st December. RPA are still saying they will pay 90% of farmers by the end of December, but whether this payment will actually be correct we are not sure. If you receive any money this is wonderful and we expect payments to be 17% higher that 2015. If there is much difference please let us know and we can check to see if your 2015 payment was actually correct, as many
