On-Farm Dispersal On behalf of K Whitaker & Son, Bay Horse Saturday 21st April saw the on-farm dispersal of farm machinery and implements on behalf of David and Carol Whitaker and family of K Whitaker and Son Ltd of Stirzaker Farm, Bay Horse. The sun was beaming down and a feeling of spring in the air saw a massive crowd gather from throughout the North of England, Scotland and Wales with items also selling into Ireland.

There was nearly 500 lots on offer, all eagerly bid for. The tractors, digger and Quad bike attracted plenty of interest topping at £44,500 for a 2016 four wheel drive John Deere with loader, the 2008 John Deere four wheeled drive tractor selling to £20,000 and the Kubota digger realising £7,000. A large quantity of well-maintained livestock equipment created a large amount of interest, selling to a top of £4,000 for a mobile sheep handling trailer.

Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 20th April The weekly sale of Store Cattle saw an entry of 300 forward, grazing types of Cattle selling to a sharper trade with a few extra faces ringside looking to purchase. Topping the trade today at £1420 was a British Blue Bullock from WS Burrow & Son, Silverdale. Charolais Bullocks sold to a top of £1390 from PM & ST Entwhistle, Abbeystead. Aberdeen Angus Bullocks topped at £1300 from GF & EE Holt, Chipping. Heifers twice topped at £1180 for British Blues from H & A Stephenson, Tunstall and WS Burrow & Son, Silverdale.

Black and Whites were a sharper trade this week, selling to £1170 from JM & AG Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. Big Dairy bred Bullocks regularly sold over the £1000 mark.

A few less Cast Cows on the market today saw 86 forward selling to an overall market average of 125p/kg.

Topping the trade today was a OTM Black and White Heifer selling to 169.5p/kg from Barker Farms, Carnforth with others regularly selling in the 160’s. Top overall price today was a Limousin Cast Bull from R & A Easterby, Westhouse selling to £1443.

Best Cows sold between 140-154p/kg. Beef Cows sold to 154.5p/kg from D & DW Prickett, Farleton.

Black and White Cows sold to 149.5p/kg fro W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe.

There was a smaller entry of Calves and Stirks forward to selling to a continued brisk trade. Topping the trade today was JM & MH France & Son, Littledale selling British Blue Bulls to £385 and £370. British Blue Heifers topped at £360 and £345 from J & G Thornley, Kirkham. There was plenty of Continental Beef Calves selling over the £300 mark. Native Calves saw Aberdeen Angus Bulls sell to £265 and £260 from D & K Haworth, Hambleton with Aberdeen Angus Heifers from the same home selling to £205. The Black and White trade topped at £110 from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale.

There was a few 5-6 month old Stirks forward selling to a top of £500 twice for British Blue and Limousin from IT Richardson, Goosnargh.

Monday 23rd April There was the largest entry of Spring Lambs forward so far this season with 75 going under the gavel. There was an overall market average of 295p/kg. Best conformation Texel lambs sold in excess of 340p/kg topping at 359p/kg or £140 from S Wilson and Son of Scotforth, who also had 41kg lambs to £140. Suffolk lambs also topped at £140 from WN & D Smith of Cockerham weighing 44kg. Four vendors of spring lambs averaged £130 or more of their consignments. It was great to have another fresh face ringside looking to purchase lambs with more required week on week to satisfy buyer’s requirements.

A few more Prime Hoggs on offering today selling to an overall average of 211p/kg. Well fleshed continental and cheviot hoggs still selling in excess of 230p/kg. Topping today at 243p/kg or £107 were 43kg Cheviots from J & H Davis of Cabus. Top price of the day was £123 for Suffolks from AG Butler of Hambleton, closely followed by £118 for Texels from the same home. Plenty of well fleshed heavy hoggs selling £110 plus.

Hoggs required each week with a busy ring of active buyers looking for all specifications.

There was plenty of interest in Cast Ewes at Lancaster, especially with a new buyer ringside purchasing. Texel tups topped at £133 from JM Kelsall and Son of Quernmore. Texel ewes sold to £121 from CB Farming of Hindley, closely followed by A & E Clarkson of Thurnham.

Mule cast ewes sold to a top of £105 from WN & D Smith of Cockerham. Plenty demand for ewes with more easily handled to the advantage of vendors.

There was a smaller entry of Sheep with Lambs following on from last week’s show and sale with the entry mainly made up of older sheep with lambs this week. The trade saw outfits with strong lambs, being well suckled, selling to an equally as strong trade as last week with outfits slightly harder to sell, meeting a realistic trade with a busy ringside of buyers. The trade topped at £178 for full mouthed Mule ewes with Texel lambs from SH & M Batty of Quernmore. Aged Mules with twin Texel lambs sold to £175 from MJ & K Ayrton of Thurnham.

Broken mouthed Continental ewes with Texel twins sold to £175 from D & K Swarbrick of Out Rawcliffe. Strong Continental aged ewes with strong Suffolk lambs at foot sold to £145 or £72.50 a life from AG & GM Rowlinson of Killington.

J36 Sale Reports Thursday 19th April There was a small entry of Store Cattle forward, ahead of the Annual Grass Day Sale, which saw a flying trade for all classes of cattle entered. The day’s trade was topped at £1080 for a Limousin Steer from R&S Galbraith of Crooklands, which also saw others to £990 and £980. Heifers also from Messrs Galbraith sold to a top of £850 for Limousins, followed by DJ&EA Park of Crook selling 12-13mo heifers to £840 and twice to £820.

Less Calves on offer this fortnight with 61 forward selling to another pleasing trade, beef calves were in short supply and more are required each week. Topping the trade was a British Blue bull from DW Cottam of New Hutton selling to £355, closely followed by a Charolais bull at £350 from JK & A Bowness & Son of Milnthorpe, with plenty of Continental beef bull calves easily £300 plus. Heifers sold to a top of £285 three times for British Blues from ME Wannop & Son of Morecambe and B Mallinson & Son of Levens. Charolais’ also selling to £285 from JK & A Bowness & Son and Limousin heifer calves to the same price from TH Gibson & Son of Kendal. Plenty of trade for Native calves with Angus heifers selling to £270 from B Mallinson & Son of Levens and Hereford bulls to £265 from ME Wannop & Son of Morecambe.

Dairy bulls saw Flekviehs to £130 from J Scott & Co of Cark in Cartmel and Friesians to £95 from DR & C Galbraith of Grayrigg.

A smaller entry of Cast Cows forward in the market today, due to the fantastic weather conditions with many customers catching up with land-based jobs. The sale was topped at 199.5p/kg for a British Blue Cow forward from JW Robinson & Son of Farleton. Black & White cows topped at 139.5p/kg for pure bred Friesians forward from JW Hargreaves of Woodland, following at 134.5p/kg twice from the same home. A fantastic trade reflected by an overall average of 125.12p/kg for all classes forward.

Tuesday 17th April A small entry of Prime Pigs forward today, in line with the current decline in pig prices from last year. Topping the market was a consignment from A Preston of Whitehaven selling all lots forward for £125 or 139p/kg. All pigs in market selling to average 136.22p/kg. The sale date for the next sale of Pigs has been amended to Tuesday 1st May, where all classes of pigs will be present. The weekly sale of Sheep with Lambs at Foot this week saw double the number of entries forward for sale from last week. Purchasers now being more selective, with younger sheep, to be kept as future replacements with stronger lambs achieving the premium prices. Top price of the day was a pen of 10 tremendous Mule Shearlings with strong Texel x twin lambs at foot, forward from regular consignor G&KM Atkinson from Colby achieving £250 per family, also selling another pen of 10 for £240 per family. Continental Shearlings with lambs also selling well, with Texel x Shearlings with Texel x Beltex Lambs at foot achieving £220 from D&J&A Freeman from Troutbeck. Continental Shearlings with single lambs selling to a top of £170 twice from D&J&A Freeman and AT Threlkeld of Satterthwaite, with plenty of lots achieving more than £70 per life.

Ewes with Lambs sold to £210 for Texel x ewes with twin lambs forward from G&ID Postlethwaite of Howgill, followed by a huge Mule 3 Crop ewe with twin lambs from G&KM Atkinson selling for £200.

An entry of 40 Spring Lambs forward this week at Junction 36, with an overall average of 284.47p/kg in line with other centre’s this week.

Half of the lambs in the market this week weighing 39kgs or less, with the light section averaging 294.14p/kg, selling to a top of 326p/kg or £127 from FE&CM Robinson & Son of Crooklands. Standard weight lambs achieving 312.5p/kg from MJ Waller of Lupton or £128 from M Allen of Yealand Conyers, to average 273.76p/kg. Top price of the sale was achieved by E Dodgson of Kendal for a 48kg Texel selling for £150.

Prime Hogg numbers starting to decline as many vendors reach the end of their consignments. Topping the day’s trade was a Suffolk hogg forward from ML Preece of Kirkby Lonsdale, selling for Cancer Research selling to £170 purchased by MN Alam on behalf of Lancashire Direct Halal Meat Ltd. Top price of the day was achieved by JA Chapman of Kendal for a pen of 13 heavy Texel Hoggs selling for £144 per head, with others from the same home selling for £137. All heavy lambs selling to an average of 247.61p/kg.

Premium prices being achieved once again for best Beltex and Texel bred hoggs, top price per kilo on the day at 305.7p/kg for a pen of 5 from JG Harryman of Hawkshead, with others from the same home at 301.1p/kg. All standard weight hoggs selling to achieve an average of 233.95p/kg.

Half of the hoggs in the market weighing less than 39kgs, which was reflected in the overall market average of 225.29p/kg.

Half bred ewes selling to a top of £85 twice for Mules from CW Kipling of Greenholme and JE Wightman of Cow Brow. Hill bred sheep selling to a top of £95 for Cheviots from KR&CA Williamson of Kirkby Lonsdale, with others from the same home to £91. Rough Fell ewes selling to £85 from J Ridding of Kendal, Swaledales to £73 from JF Cook of Witherslack and Dalesbreds to £75 from T&CM Kelsall & Son of Chipping.
